Sri ANDAL- Sri RanganAthar ThirukkalyANam Part 7.4
In the old times , weddings went on for four days in contrast to today's one day affair . There were opportunities to conduct all aspects of a Vaidhika VivAham in a leisurely manner . The only ArchA mUrthy , who was in a hurry to get married was the Lord of the Divya Desam , Thiru Idaventhai , Sri Nithya KalyANar . He had promised to marry the 360 daughters of Kaalava Maharshi one per day . The VimAnam of Thiruvidaventhai is aptly known as KalyANa VimAnam . At the end of His marriages spread over the year , He united all His wives into one and named Her Akilavalli NaacchiyAr and our Yenthai /EmperumAn placed Her on His left ( Idathu Pakkam ) . Thus arose the name of Thiruvidaventhai for this Divya Desam .
This is the divya desam that Sri Venkatesh Ilayavalli of our prapatthi group visited recently . Welcome Back , Sri Elayavalli and thank you very much for your Kaimkaryam to maintain the SaraNAgathi List Archives upto date .
Returning to our narration of the happenings at Sri VillipputthUr , Sri RanganAthA was in no hurry to rush His wedding with ANDAL . He was going to settle down at His wife's birth place anyway. Hence, the MappiLLai Swami took his time and conducted the PradhAna Homam, Graha PravEsam , Pravisya Homam and Sesha Homam without any hurry .
PradhAna Homam After Sapthapathi , the newly married dampathis sat on the western side of the sacred fire . ANDAL placed Her right hand on the left thigh of Sri RangarAjan , while He performed the PradhAna homam . There are ten Homa manthrams and 16 AhUthis . At the end of each of the

manthram ending with SvAhA , a ladle of ghee was poured into the sacred fire. Let us examine the 16 AhUthi manthrams :
First Manthram : sOmAya janivithE svAhA ( This ladle of ghee is offered to Agni BhagavAn for transmittal to Soman for his pleasure in recognition of his help to the Kannikai earlier.
Second manthram : GandharvAya JanivithE svAhA ( This ladle of ghee /AhUthi is offered to Gandharvan via Agni to please him in recognition of his blessings to the kannikai after Soman .
Third Manthram : AgnayE janivithE SvAhA ( This particular ladle of Ghee is presented to Agni to recognize his anugraham to the kannikai after Gandharvan .
DevathA Sambhandham of the kannikai referred to above Before Maangalya DhAraNam , there are two manthrams that are recited , which describe the association of Soman , Gandharvan and Agni with the Kannikai prior to marrying a human being as her husband . That shows the daivAmsam of the Kannikai .Those manthrams are :
Soma: PrathamO vividhE GandharvO vividha uttara: trutheeyO AgnishtE pathi:I thureeyasthE manushayajA : II
SomO (a)dhath GandharvAya , GandharvO (a)dhath AgnayE rayincha puthrAgumsccha adhAth Agnir MahyamathO ImAm
( Meaning ) : Soman became her first husband . Gandharvan was her next husband. Agni was the third husband of this Kannikai . The one born as a human being is the fourth and final husband. Soman handed you over toGandharvan ; He inturn gave you to Agni . Latter blessed you with wealth and progeny and gave you finally to me for my sukham .
The inner meaning is that Chandran ( Soman ) gave you strength , Gandharvan blessed you with beauty and Agni gave you the boon of youth ( Youvvanam ) and then Agni BhagavAn gave you to me , the human being, as a present for my sukham . Thus , You have come to me as DaivAmsam .
The Kaanikai's glories are celebrated through these two manthrAs . The First three pradhAna Homa manthrams are connected to this conception . You might recall ALavanthAr's defeating the arrogant scholar at the royal court based on this Vedic reference .
Fourth Manthram kanyalA pithrubhyO yathee pathilOkam avadheekshAmathAstha svAhA (Meaning): I pour this ladle of ghee in the Agni as Homam for the kannikai leaving behind the blemishes as she leaves her father's home to join her husband's home .
Fifth manthram prEtho munchAthi naamuthas supatthA mamu taskarath ythEyameendhra meetvas suputhrA subhagAsathi

(Meaning ) : O Indra , who blesses us with rain ! Please release this kannikai from her father's house. Please make sure that she does not leave her husband's house. Please bless her to have deep attachment to her husband's home.Please bless her to be attached to her new home . Please bless her to have auspicious progeny ( suputhrA : ) . Please bless her to have al soubhAgyams in her new home .
Sixth Manthram imAm tvamindhra meetva saputhrAgum subhagAm kuru dasAsyAm puthrAnAdehi pathim EkAdasam kruthi
( Meaning ) : O Indra , the king of rains and Subhiksham! pray to you to make this kannikai full of auspicious progeney and wealth . May she be blessed to bear ten sons and make me her eleventh one .
Seventh manthram agnirEthu prathamO devAnAgum sOsyai prajAm munchathumruthyupAsAth I tathayagum RaajA VaruNO anumnayathAm yathEyagum shtree pouthramakam na rhOdhAth II
( meaning ) : May the first among DevAs , Agni BhagavAn come here ! May he release her children from the noose of Yama devA ( akAla MaraNam ) . May Lord VaruNA >do what is needful to make her not cry over her sons or daughters .
Eighth Manthram imAm Agnis tayathAm gArhapathya: prajAmasyai nayathu dheerghamAyu : I asUnyOpasatthA jeevathAmasthu mAthA pouthramAnandhamapi prabuddhyathAmiyam II
( Meaning ) : May Lord Agni closely associated with the Grahasthan protect her ( kannikai ) . May he grant long life to her children ! may she never be infertile and may she be the mother of live children ! May she wake up to the joy of having children !
Ninth manthram maa thE gruhE nisi ghOsha uddhAtanyathra tvathrutatyas samvisanthu I maa tvam vikEsyura aavathishtA jeevapathnee pathilOkE virAja pasyanthee prajAgum sumansyamAnAm II
( Meaning ) :O KaanikE ! May there not be any loud noises in your house at night ! may any anger & sorrows behind those loud arguments go elsewhere ! May thou not sprad your hair in despair and beat your breasts in sorrow ! May there be no occasion for such despair ! may thou shine in your husband's house with good will and take good care of your children !
Tenth manthram dhyousthE prushtagagum rakshathu , VaayurUrU , asvinou cha sthanam , dayanthagum SavithAbhi rakshathu I avAsasa: paridhAnAth Bruhaspathir vivE dEvO abhirakshanthu pascchAth II

(Meaning): May the AkAsa devathA (dhyou ) protect your rear ! May Vaayu dEvan protect your two thighs ! May AsvinI dEvAs protect your chest region ! May SavithA ( sooryan ) protect your baby nourished by your milk ! may Brahaspathi protect you until your wear your pudavai. Afterwards , May VisvEdEvAs protect you ( THis manthram is a kavacham for the protection of the kannikai's body ) .
Eleventh manthram aprajasthAm pouthramruthyum pApmAnamudhavAkam I seershNa: srajamivOnmuchya dhvishdbhya:prathimunchAmi paasam II
( meaning) : I (the Kannikai) leave with my enemies amnagaLams like infertility ,premature death of children , other sins and sorrows just as I take the used flower garland from my tresses . This way I remove the noose of inauspiciousnes of the above four kinds that may bind me .
Twelfth Manthram ( Part of Saayam SandhyAvandhanam /Yajur Vedam ) Imam VaruNa srudheehavamadhyA cha mruDyA tvAmavasyurAchakE (Meaning ): Oh Lord VaruNA !Please hear my sthOthram and make me happy right away !I salute you with he intent of being protected by you !
Thirteenth manthram ( Saayam SandhyA vandhana Manthrams) tattvAyAmi brahmaNA vandhanAnastadhAsAsthE yajamAnO havirbhi: I ahEDamAnO VaruNEha bhOdhi urusagum samAna aayu: pramOshi II
(Meaning ) : O VaruNA ! O supreme Lord ! I take refuge in your protection by singing your glory through recitation of Veda manthrams . It is for this type of protection by You , the kings make sacrificial offerings to Agni to reach You . Oh VaruNa dEva! please grant the protection that I am seeking now without getting angry . Oh Lord of praise worthy attributes ! Please do not snatch away my life with your VaruNa paasam in a mood of anger ! Please spare my life !
Fourteenth Manthram tvannO AgnE VaruNasya VidhvAn Devasya hEDO avayAsi seeshtA I yajishtO Vahnitham sOsusAnO visvA dvEshAgumsi pramumulthyasmath II
(Meaning): O Agni DevA !May Thou as the omniscient one , intercede with the splendorous VaruNan and reduce his anger at us ! O Agni DevA ! You are the most praiseworthy and You carry all Havis to the DevAs from us in your resplendent form . May Thou remove all kinds of enimiites between us fully !
Fifteenth manthram sathvannO AgnE avamO bhavOthee nEthishtO asyA UshasO vyushtou I avakshvanO VaruNagum rarANO veehi mruteekagum suhavO na yEthi II
( Meaning ) : O Lord Agni of above auspicious attributes ! You stand in the front row of DevAs . Please come close to us to protect us at the time , when the dawn's rays have receded . Please stand next to us and save us from the anger of Lord VaruNA for our misdeeds . Please bless us with saamagriyAs and accept from us , what pleases you . Please be a supporter of our work in this world .

Sixteenth Manthram tvamagnE ayAsyayAsann mansaa hitha: ayAsann havya mUhishE ayAnO dEhi BhEshajam II
( Meaning ) : O Agni DevA ! You have us as Your servants ! For us , You serve as the object of meditation and goal to atain . You are accessible to us and carry our Havis to the other DevAs and the Lord . Please grant us what is beneficial to us just as the appropriate medicine for a patient .
With these manthrams , PradhAna ( Primary ) homam was completed by Sri RanganAthA as a bridegroom .
Bride Standing on top of a Pestle ( Ammi ) The next ceremony was the Ammi mithitthal . This ceremony with its accompanying manthram is performed to pray for the resoluteness of the bride to stand firmly against any upsets in married life .
Sri RanganAtha held the toe of the right foot of ANDAL and lifted her foot to rest on the ammi grinding stone) placed on the right side of the sacred fire . He recited the following manthram at that time :
aathishtEmam asmAnam asmEva dheevagum sthirA bahva I apithishtta bhruthanyatha: sahasva bhruthanAyatha : II
( Meaning ) : My dear ANDAL ! May Thou stand on this rock of a grinding stone firmly . In your married life , oppose those , who oppose you without flinching or wavering . May Thou bear with your enemies . Oh My dear Wife ! When the violent winds blow during our married life , Please stand firmly like you are standing on this firm pestle and chase away those , who wish to cause harm to You . Please stand firm until these violent winds blow away . Have courage and patience to stand up to these unplesant and disturbing events . Please bear with those , who committ aparAdhams to You .
ANDAL herself has sung about Her experience of Ammi Mitthitthal ceremony assisted by Sri RanganAthA . We come across it in the 8th verse of Decad 10.6 of NaacchiyAr Thirumozhi :
Immaikkum yEzhEzh piRavikkum paRRAvAn nammai udayavan NaarAyaNan nambi Semmai udaya ThirukkaiyAl thALL paRRi AMMI MITHIKKAK kanAk kantEn thOzhi naan
ANDAL housed this description as the 8th paasuram to celebrate the Lord of AshtAkshara Manthram ( MUla manthram ) . This is a profound paasuram and is a grand summary of the relationship between sEshi and sEshan just as " ChiRRam siru kAlE Vanthunnai sEvitthu -- " paasuram of ThiruppAvai . There ANDAL declares majestically , " yeRRaikkum yEzhEzh piRavikkum unthannOdu uRROmE aavOm , unakkE naamAtcheyvOM , maRRai namm kaamangaL mARRElOrempAvAI " . In the Ammi mithitthal paasuram , she reminds us of the same profound and central truth ( SaraNAgathi sAsthram ) with almost the same words that are like echos to her Thiruppaavai paasuram . Here she says : " Immaikkum yEzhEzh piRavikkum , nammai udayavan NaarAyaNan nambi paRRAvAn " . The usage of " nammaiudayavan " is

another thundering revelation . We can now understand why Sri RanganAthA gave the title of "Udayavar" to Sri RaamAnujA .
ANDAL declares here that the relationship between NaarAyaNan and us is " ozhikka ozhiyAthu " ( a relationship that lasts forever and can not be broken by any means ) . In this world ( Immai ) during the septads of births and also in the other world ( MaRumai ) , he is the ONE to lean on as UpAyam and UpEyam to get MokshAnugraham . ANDAL reminded the sleeping Nanda GopAlan of His duties in this context ( paarArthyam ) in Her ThiruppAvai paasurams and woke Him up to perform those duties ( EmperumAn NandagOpAlA YezhunthirAi ; umbar kOmAnE , urangAthezhundirAi).
ANDAL was born as the daughter of PeriyAzhwAr , who declared , " yEzhAtkAAlum PazhippilOm--ThirumAlE! naanumunakku PazhavadiyEn ". She performed MangaLAsAsanam for Her Lord in the ammi mitthitthal paasuram ( nammai udayavan NaarAyaNa nambi ) and reminded us that Sri RanganAthan is sarva lOka SaraNyan and Sarva sEshi . That primary principle ,Sri RanganAtha touched Her toe with His lotus soft hands and lifted it along with the foot and placed it on the Ammi ( semmai udaya thirukkaiyAl thALL paRRi ammi mithikka kanak kantEn ) .
Laaja Homam (Offer of parched rice to Agni ) The next ceremony is Laaja homam . This is the occasion , when ANDAL like other brides prays for the state of auspiciousnes for Her Lord Sri RanganAthan and seeks Her Lord's aaseervAdhams .
In the ninth paasuram of VaraNamAyiram , ANDAL describes the laaja homam ceremony :
--- arimuhan achyuthan kaim mEl yennkai vaitthu poRimuham tattakk kanAk kantEn thOzhi naan
When the bride enacts lAja homam , she cups her hand and the brothers of the bride place a handful of parched rice ( poRi ) . Then bridegroom adds few drops of ghee to that parched rice. The bride and bridegroom together perform then the laaja homam and throw the ghee-moistened popped rice into the fire as aahUthi with the following manthram :
iyam naaree upabhruthE kulpAthyAvapanthikA I dheerghAyurasthu mEh pathir jeevAthu saradas satham II
( Meaning ) : O Agni ! My wife is praying for long life to me. She prays for me to have hundreds of years of life as her husband .
After the Laaja homam , the dampathis went around the fire thrice to the accompaniment of three more Veda manthrams . These manthrams house prayers for long married life , suprajAs and strength to bear with all difficulties that one might come across in married life .
Another Ammi mitthitthal and three laaja homams are conducted with appropriate veda manthrams. One of the laaja homa manthram prays to Agni to release the wedded kannikai to be released from the grip of her household of birth and appeals for firm links to the house of the husband . The other laaja homa manthram is addressed to AryamA and prays for unison in thought and action among the dampathis in their married life .

Release of VaruNa paasam as the concluding act of marriage Now , the darbhaa rope tied around the bride's waist is removed with the recitation of two manthrAs . The meaning of these manthrAs are: "Oh My dear wife! I release you now from the paasam tied by Lord VaruNA of benevolent disposition . I will strive to create a happy home for you in the land , where puNyasAlis live in this world created by BrahmA.
The graha PravEsam ceremony follows and the bride travels to her husband's home to become the queen of that household. In the Rg vedam , there are elaborate manthrams of the dampathis travelling withHomAgnion a canopied cart to the groom's house . These are beautiful and powerful manthrams that seek auspiciousness in married life . We will be hard pressed in time to cover them here . We will include the tenth paasuram describing the happy state of mind of ANDAL , when she as the bride of Si RanganAtha goes around the thiruveethis ( streets ) of Sri VilliputthUr on the back of a well caparisoned elephant and concludes her dream of marriage to Her Lord in the manner prescribed by the ancient VedAs :
kumkumam appik kuLir sAntham mattitthu mangala veethi valam seythu maNa neer angavanOdumudan senRu angAnai mEl manjanamAttak kanAk kantEn thOzhi naan
In Her palasruthi paasuram , ANDAL informs us that those , who recite Her VaraNamAyiram paasurams dealing with Her marriage to Sri RanganAthan with Bhakthi would have suprajAs in this world .
" thUya Tamizh maalai eerainthum vallavar vaayunan makkaLaip peRRu mahizhvarE "
At the end of NaacchiyAr Thirumozhi , she points out that those , who recite Her prabhandham with devotion would get some thing superior to just getting suprajAs , (Viz.,) the refuge at the sacred feet of Her Lord Himself :

2. The Perfect Devotee who truly understands
the Deity is rare indeed:
1. Naturally it is hard indeed to find such a saadhaka who has known the Deity in essence
and reality. No one knows Me says the Lord later on in (7.26). Krishna describes such a
bhakta in (7.18, 19). As Krishna stated:
“Among thousands of men, one per chance strives for perfection – manushyaanaam
sahasreshu, kas’cit yatati siddhaye. Even among the striving and who have attained
perfection, one perchance knows Me according to proper principles (tattvatah) –

yatataam api siddhaanaam kas’cit maam vetti tattvatah”. – [7.3]: [The term siddhi is a
comprehensive one denoting a number of aspects – fulfillment, accomplishment,
complete attainment, success, bliss, beatitude, final liberation, etc.]:
2. The exciting and dramatic start to the discussion on the Deity in Chapter Seven
stated above (7.1, 2) kindles our interest and eagerness to know what exactly Krishna
had to say on the subject. This is the knowledge of the All-Embracing Deity and the
wisdom of one unitively established self –yukta aatmaa (7.18), eternally united with the
Divine – nitya uktah and who is devoted to one and only Deity – eka-bhaktah (7.17).
What is this wisdom on which Krishna is lavishing such praise, thus exciting devotee’s
interest? To gain this wisdom and this practice the saadhaka has to proceed slowly
and steadily from the known to the unknown. Let us see how Krishna develops the
knowledge stated above:
3. Prakriti: The Dual Nature of Spirit in
Creation: Deity’s Lower and Higher
Nature (Prakriti) Explained:
“Earth, water, fire, air, sky (space), mind (cause of the ego-sense), intellect (reason or
mahat of the saamkhya philosophy) and also consciousness of individuality (ego) –
thus, here is divided My eightfold Nature – me bhinnaa prakritih asht’adhaa. This is the
lower” – [7.4]: [It may be recalled that the s’rutis call the Deity as – Bhooman (essence of
the earth), Naaraayan’a (Lord of waters), Praan’a (air – the life-breath), Jyoti (Light of
lights) and Aakaas’a (space). This is the Deity’s eight-fold divine power, constituting
physical cosmic nature or matter from the metaphysical point of view. The eightfold
division corresponds to the saankhyan vyakta prakriti and is elaborated into twenty-four
entities – discussed in chapter 13.]: “Know the other to be My Nature, which is higher –
prakritim viddhi me paraam, constituting life principle (the jeeva), O mighty armed, by
which the phenomenal world is sustained – jeevabhootaam yayaa idam dhaaryate jagat”.

the cosmos. Krishna unequivocally declares that the world of matter (insentient) and the
word of spirit (sentient) selves belong to Him forming His Lower and higher nature

TIRU EVVULLUR ( Tiruvallur )
This Divya kshetram is located at Tuiruvallur on Chennai Arkonam railroad.
The moolavar is Veeraraghava perumal in a reclining posture with His right hand blessing the
devotees, and the Thayar Kanakavalli Thayar enshrined in a separate sanctum. The Theertham is
Hritabhanasini pushkarini and the Vimanam Vijayakoti Vimanam.
The legend has it that Lord Vishnu revealed the Vedas to Brahma at this kshetram. It is also
believed that the Lord in the guise of an old man requested Salihotra Munivar for food and later
posing the question for shelter at which place –Evvul (hence the name Tiru Evvullur). Upon
being pointed to his hut by the Munivar the Lord took shelter covering Him with the bark of trees

found nearby. The next morning the Munivar realized that the guest was none other than the Lord
and prayed to Him to stay at this shetram and bless him. Thus the moolavar is decorated with a
bark like vastram.
The temple is under the administration of the Ahobila Mutt and there are shrines for Aandal,
Nammaazhwar, Ramanujar and Vedantha desikar. There is a separate shrine for Lakshmi
Narasimhar. The presiding deity is supposed to cure all diseases and is called Vaidya
Veeraraghavan
Azhwar Mangalaasaasanam:
Tirumangai Azhwar – 1058-67, 2674 (116) Tirumazhisaiazhwar – 2417 (pasuram numbers as
found in Naalaayira Divaya prabhandam).
New moon day is considered to be auspicious to worship at this kshetram.
TIRUVALLIKKENI
This Divya kshetram is located in the city of Chennai in Tiruvallikkeni. The moolavar is
Parthasarathy also called Venkatakrishanan in a standing posture and the Thayar is Vedhavalli
Thayar. The Theertham is Kairavinisaras also called Allikkeni. The Vimanam is Anantha
Vimanam.
The alli flowers in the temple tank lend the name Allikkeni. In the main sanctum besides the
moolavar there are also vigrahas of Rukmini, Balarama, Satyaki, Anirudha and Pradhyumna. This
particular shetram is the only one, which depicts the images of the family of Lord Krishna in the
sanctum. The Utsava vigraha of Parthasarathy bears scars supposed to be from the arrows of
Bheeshma, while he acted as the charioteer to Arjuna, in the Mahabharata war. There are separate
shrines for Ranganatha, Vedavalli, Narasimhar, Varadarajar and Andal.
As per sthala purana Tiruvengadamudayan promised Sumathirajan to give darsan as
Parthasarathy and had the vigraha installed by Atreya maharshi at this shrine. Azhwar

Ameyatma, Mahadridhrt In the previous parts 93 and 94, Nammazhwar's Thiruvaimozhi in mudal, irandam pathu ,the glory of namas of Sriman Narayana were discussed. In this part Moondram pathu is briefly discussed. In 3.9, Azhwar which starts as Sonnal virodham idhu aagilum solluven, says that he will utter all words of praises only on SriThiruvenkatthan and not on any other gods. In second pasuram He says as there is no use to praise (Jeevathmas )human beings who just live with self centered policies. Thirukkurungudi Peruman is our father, and it is good only to sing Him. The principle of the attainment of eternity without any disturbances is possible only with Sriman Narayana who bless us all in( Archarathi margam,) in the form of deities in the temple , and so to sing only in praise of Him ,is depicted in the third pasuram.The effect of praising men last only for a certain period is in fourth pasuram. In fifth pasuram Azhwar assures there is no further births if one utters his Namas. There are various good aspects in praing Him. He is without any omissions and capable of blessing all. And so invites everybody to sing Him.Sixth pasuram conveys as if any song done in praise of other gods, it will automatically goes to Sriman Narayana. Orayiram perum udaiya piran is the only suitable Supreme personality deserving all our praises is the message in seventh pasuram. Utterances of His namas will last till last breath, as He will guide not only in this birth but also about eternity is told in 8, 9 th pasurams. The concluding two pasurams also confirms the importance of uttering His namas . Dharmasthothram dealing with the meanings Sri Vishnu Sahasranamam is continued first with the glory of namas in first paragraph.

179th nama is Ameyatma which means He who is the supreme majesty ,He is like the deep ocean, and with the spirit of intelligence . His capacity cannot be measured by anyone, as He is with an incomprehensible nature, with the diverse qualities and form.He is thus described thus as one with immeasurable knowledge. Ameya denotes immeasurable, Aatma denotes essence and so this Nama Ameyaatmaa is one Whose essence is estimable and immeasurable .In Sri Venkateswara Suprabatham Prabhatti second slokam "Sriman kripadalanite Sritha sarvaloka sarvagna saktha natha vatsala sarvaseshin conveys about the supreme personality. His nature of Vatsalyam, Sowseelyam, Swamithvam and sowlabhyam indicating kindness, knowledge, power, virtue are all immeasurable. When Arjuna was deeply agitated , Sri Krishna cleared all the doubts Sri Krishna's teachings to Arjuna, called as Srimad Bagavad Geetha which is considered as the words of Sriman narayana preserved with sacred affection in all our hearts acknowledging it as supreme treasure of human literature. In that Gita 13.14, Sri Krishna states sarvam avritya thishtathi " He is possessed of hands and feet on all sides, eyes on all sides, head face and ears on all sides. There is no place where he is not, no sound which He does not hear, no sight which he does not see,object which He does not take,and no region where He has no access. His limitless, endless manifestations expresses all His fame , supreme glory features.
180 th nama is Mahadrihrit which informs His lifting large mountain. He is called as the bearer of large mountains. Mandara Parvatham was held up during churning of the milk ocean parkadal. He is considered both as the uplifter and supporter of mountains. While churning the milky ocean with Mandara Parvatham, it is informed as churning stick (Mathu ) sunk into the bottom and so the Lord manifested Himself as Koorma (Tortoise ) and supported it. Both Devas and Asuras then continued their churning and brought Amirtham (Nectar ) finally.Mahadrihrit also denotes another mountain Govardhan. The cowherds of vrindavan used to offer a great sacrifice to Indra and varuna to get early rains. Once, when Krishna noticed this yagna,He has decided to take the power from them.KNowing this, Indra once sent down heavy rain in Vrindavan. Sri Krishna then called everybody near Him, and lifted the Govardhana Mountain itself, and was holding up with a single finger.He made them all to take shelter beneath it. He stood protecting them for seven days and nights till Indra was exhausted and repentant and ready to offer worship Sri Krishna as greatest them of all the ancient Gods put together. All prostrated before Sri Krishna and said as whoever and whatever be, We salute Krishna and worship Him only. In Andal's Nachiar Thirumozhi,12.8, this message is quoted as " Kudaiyaga endhi ninra Govarthanathukku ennai vuythidumin ".Periazhwar in Thirumozhi 3.5 narrates the entire episode of cowherds in Thiruvaipadi being controlled in feeding Indra ,and how Krishna protected them and their cattle with them from the heavy rains in 11 pasurams. In 4.2.4, Azhwar says as Thirumaliruncholai is similar to this.

Prapanna ParitrANam

Let us continue with our deliberation of how our relationships could
offer protection in times of our need. From the earlier post and in the
light of purAnic evidence, one safely concludes that brothers cannot offer that protection. In these modern times, when joint family system
is not in vogue any more, one would tend to readily agree with this without hesitation. But what about sons? The word ‘son’ stirs up
enormous passion in one’s heart and it is not uncommon for fathers to
rely heavily on their sons. But the question still remains, how much of protection can they offer to their fathers?
Pillai LokachariyAr, in Prapanna ParithrANam, considers sons next to
drive home the point that this faith on sons is also misplaced. Let us
see what evidence he quotes.

Pillai LokachAriyar provides evidences of the story of Rudran and
Kamsan to affirm that sons also cannot provide protection all the
time.
Rudran: In our Srivaishnava Sampradaya, Lord Shiva (Rudran) is the son of Brhama. When Shiva took the form of LingOthbhavar, Lord
Brahma took the form of a hamsam (swan) and flew up to determine how far into the sky and beyond Lord Shiva’s head penetrated. He
failed to see the face of Lord Shiva and felt tired. Instead of accepting
his failure, he lied to the assembled DevAs that he had seen the top of the Lingam. Angered by this, Lord Shiva plucked the fifth head of
Brahma as a punishment. The fifth head got stuck to Shiva’s hand
Thirumangai Azwar in ThirunedunthAndakam narrates this incident
and explains how after roaming several places, Lord Shiva went to Thirukandiyoor divya desam, worshipped Lord NarAyanan and got
rid of the sin.

Inner meanings based on Sri Perukkaarani swami commentary
In paasuram 3 Andal compares acharyaas to the most generous milk laden cows ("VaLLal
Perum PasukkaL"). They impart milk of knowledge to their sishyas without any expectations. Swami
Desikar also likens acharyas as “Karakkum Surabigal”
In today’s paasuram Andal compares acharyas to dark rain-baring clouds that pour down jnanam
(Aazhi Mazhai). In this paasuram( 4) Andal takes the role of a sishya and begs upadesam from
acharya. Andal extols acharya as “Oozhi mudalvan uruvam pOl mey karutthu”- The acharyas have
become dark hued like the Lord due to constantly meditating on Him. They are filled with infinite
dayaa similar to the Lord.
Andal continues to praise the acharyas as “Paazhiyam thOLudai PaRpanAbhan kaiyil Aazhi pOl
minni”—They are brilliantly shining like Sudharshana cakram due to their Jnanam.

Andal then begs acharya for upadesams on rahasya trayam (Nee onRu kai karavEl ). Andal urges
acahrya that it will bring inauspiciousness (thAzhAthE) otherwise. Andal further pleads, to shower
the rain (Mahinzthu peythidAi) of knowledge for the survival of all the people in the world (Ulahinil
Vaazha) and also bless the prappannas (naangaLum) with saranagathi (Maarghazhi neerAda) at their
lotus feet.
Comparison between Rain clouds and Acharya
Clouds take the salty water form sea purifies it and pours clear rain water. Similarly
acharyas plunge into the ocean (azhiyil pukku) of Upanishad, smurthi & Puranams
and give only the quintessence(muhanthu kodu)to prappanas- “azhiyil pukku
muhanthu kodu“
Without the rain there will be drought and it can have detrimental effects. Similarly
without acharyas, chetanas will lead adharmic life and they will fall to hellish planets
and undergo sufferings. “thAzhAthE“
The clouds pour rain everywhere without any expectations. Similarly acharyas
impart knowledge (upadesams) without any expectations.- “Nee onRu kai karavEl”
A cloud wonders everywhere and pours rain in many different places. Similarly
acharyas travel from town to town and give upadesams to prappannas.
The rain clouds are laden with water, similarly our acahryas are always immersed in
Bagavat anubhavam- “Oozhi mudalvan uruvam
pOl mey karutthu”
Swami beautifully explains SriSampradaya beginning with Sriman Narayana as follows. Swami Namazhwar like a cloud plunged deep into the ocean of Sriman Narayana’s kalayana gunams and showered daya on the mountain peak called Naathamuni. From these waters two fountains Uyankondar and Manakkal nambi are formed. These two joined to form the river Alavandar which entered into the lake of Ramanuja. From this lake comes the 74 sluices ( simmasanapadi). Andal taking the role of shishya has practically shown us that a prappanna should hold acharyas as high as the Lord and always praise their kalyanagunam ( Madurakavi Azhwar had greater bakti to his acharyan, Namazhwar than the Lord Himself). A prapanna should also seek upadesams from acharyas submissively. Titbit: try counting “Zh” in today’s paasuram!

50. Lemon
Lemon is justly called the wonder fruit because though the fruit is acidic in
nature and is sour in taste, it acts as a buffer to the body and helps reduce
hyper acidity in the stomach. Lemon juice and peels act as an antiseptic and
the leaves of the tree are helpful in reducing fever. Lemons are very rich in
Vitamin C and act as antioxidants, thus protecting cells from radical damage.
They also help increase the immunity system of the body.
Lemons have anti-inflammatory action and are good during summers. Lemons
also stimulate appetite, help in digestion and relieve cramps. They also help in
cleansing the body by promoting perspiration which helps flushing out stored
toxins in the body.
Lemons are useful remedies, for gout, arthritis, Vitamin C deficiency, asthma,
digestive disorders, insomnia and nervousness and also helps cure several
other diseases of the stomach, liver and the intestine.

Some uses for lemons:
Infusions from lemon leaves
Pour 1 cup of boiling water over 3 tsp. of dried leaves and leave for ten
minutes. To reduce fever and relieve cramps, drink up to 2 cups per day. When
sweetened with honey, this tea helps cure coughs and asthma. It is also a cure
for insomnia. It promotes relaxation and deep sleep. Drink 1 cup before
retiring at night.
Lemon Peels
Lemon peels help provide relief from joint and nerve pains. The fragrant
volatile oils found in the peel help relax blood vessels and produce an anti-
inflammatory effect. Grate the peel from one lemon, being careful to get only
the yellow layer and none of the white pith underneath. Rub the grated peel
into the affected body part and wrap it with a bandage (preferably cotton).
Keep in place for 1-2 hours.
Lemon Juice
Lemon juice helps cure sunburns. Apply lemon juice on the sun-burnt areas
using a cotton ball. The juice acts as an astringent, relieving the pain. Lemon
juice also helps cure a soar throat. Dilute the juice of one lemon in a cup of
warm water. Use this water to gargle. Gargling is recommended thrice a day.
This will cure soar throat and throat aches. Gargling with diluted lemon juice
also helps cure minor wounds and lesions in the mouth and throat.
Pick organic lemons if you can, especially if you plan to use the peels. They
should be bright and firm with a fine grained skin. A very course exterior may
indicate a thick skin, which may mean less juicy flesh. Large lemons tend to be
thick skinned. Size doesn’t mean more juice. A lemon that feels heavy for its
smaller size usually means more juice which is what you are aiming for.

According to a legend, Lord Narasimha made his way through a long creek leading to a cave near the temple. Geologists, however, certify that an earthquake formed this
interesting rock formation over 300 million years ago.

The Lord as listener The Lord loves to be in the midst of His devotees, said Velukkudi Krishnan in a discourse.
When Lava and Kusa sang the story of Lord Rama in the court at Ayodhya, Rama did not
know they were his sons. But their songs moved Him. But He did not want to sit on His
throne, away from the crowd of people who had assembled to hear the children sing.
So He left His throne and sat among His people. Lord Krishna was the One who gave advice
to Arjuna through the Bhagavad Gita. But what He liked even better was to listen to Bhishma
extolling the greatness of the Vishnu Sahasranama to Yudhishtra.
Kulasekhara Azhvar, in one of his verses, shows this love of the Lord for the company of His
devotees, by picturising Krishna helping a Gopika churn buttermilk. Krishna asks the girl if
she wants His help, and upon affirmation from her, He holds one end of the rope and churns
the buttermilk.
Why did He not say He would do it Himself, but offer instead to assist her? It was because
He wanted to be in proximity to her. The best way to do that was to offer assistance, but not
an outright takeover of the job on hand.
But the same Lord, when the milky ocean was churned, did the churning Himself. He didn't
call in the celestials to come and churn along with Him. The celestials, as well as the asuras,
were there for a purpose. All they wanted was to ensure their own immortality, by laying
their hands on the nectar. But the Gopikas were simple women, with no desire for anything
but the Lord's company. And so He liked their company.
When the first three Azhvars met in a room, there was just enough space for them to stand.
Even while they stood there, they felt the presence of a fourth person in the room. And when
they declared their love for the Lord by proclaiming that they were lighting lamps of love, the
Lord revealed Himself.
Why did He go into that room that was already overcrowded, with just enough standing space
for the three holy men? He went in, because He relished the nearness of His devotees. He
relished feeling their touch.
