POPE FRANCIS’ PRAYER INTENTIONS

1st Sunday of Advent

When Jesus called his first disciples, the Gospel tells us that the fishermen (Peter and Andrew, James and John) dropped everything to follow Jesus immediately. Yet this Gospel tells us little about the prior experience that the fishermen had of Jesus. Did they know him? Had they heard him preach? What kind of person must Jesus have been to invoke such a response? We can imagine that Jesus was a powerful presence to elicit a response as immediate and complete as these first disciples gave.

The Gospel concludes with a description of the ministry that Jesus begins in Galilee. Jesus inaugurates the Kingdom of God with his work. He teaches in the synagogue and preaches the kingdom. His ability to cure people’s diseases and illness is a sign of the kingdom. In Jesus’ ministry, we already begin to see the Kingdom of God among us.

Today’s Gospel describes the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry. In the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke (called the Synoptic Gospels), Jesus’ public ministry begins after his baptism by John the Baptist and after his retreat to the desert where he was tempted by the devil. When Jesus returns from the desert, he hears that John has been arrested.

The first part of today’s Gospel places Jesus’ ministry in the context of the writings of the prophet, Isaiah. Matthew wants to show that Jesus is the fulfillment of the prophecies given to the people of Israel, and he refers to Isaiah to do so. Isaiah says that the Messiah will begin his ministry in Galilee, the land of the Gentiles. When Jesus begins to preach in Galilee, Matthew points to his ministry as a fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy, proof that Jesus is the Messiah.

Pandemic Protocol

· No distribution of the Blessed Sacrament

The Alberta Bishops’ task force is drafting a plan for the gradual reintroduction of public liturgies, taking into account the many complex

factors involved. We are doing this because it is vitally important that when we invite our people back to Mass and the sacraments, we get it right. We simply cannot take chances with your health and safety or that of your staff

and parishioners.

· No Baptisms, except in emergency

with no Mass

· No celebrations of the Mass with any congregation present

· Funerals or weddings must be limited to 15 or fewer attendees,

Therefore, I am writing today to remind you that all the restrictions we announced in March continue to apply until such time that I advise you

otherwise. These include:

· Priests can still visit persons in hospital or confined to home who requested Holy Communion, Confession or the Sacrament of the Sick, provided they

follow hospital protocols and practice appropriate risk mitigation.

· Churches can remain open for adoration for private prayer, provided that no more than 15 people are in the church at a given time, that they observe appropriate physical distancing, and that commonly touched surfaces are

regularly cleaned.

· Confessions can be heard, while observing appropriate physical distancing.

I know you are eager to return to some semblance of normal parish life; we all are. It will happen. Our Lord would never abandon His children. For now, I

am grateful for your continuing co-operation and patience.

The Catholic Bishops of Alberta remain committed to the gradual reinstatement of public celebrations of the Mass and welcome the recent release of the Guidance for Places of Public Worship document as part of the provincial government’s relaunch strategy.

Any announcement of the date for the gradual reintroduction will be made at least five days before the first scheduled Mass. Parishes by then will have received diocesan guidelines which help ensure the safety of everyone.

“It is critical that we understand the risks and take steps in minimizing the spread of COVID-19 through prudent planning,” said Bishop McGrattan.

“The health and safety of our parishioners, priests, and church staff are of utmost importance. Each and every life is a precious gift from God, and we are called to do everything in our power to protect them. No date will be set for the resumption of public liturgies in our Catholic churches and institutions until the Bishops are satisfied that their own directives can be fully and properly implemented.

These guidelines are being carefully considered by the task force that the Bishops have established under the direction of Archbishop Richard Smith of Edmonton and Bishop William McGrattan of Calgary.

The task force is drafting for the Bishops a set of directives for the gradual reintroduction of Masses in public. The Bishops will present these to

Who did God create you to be? How can you live your life for Christ in the midst of our current suffering? Turn to the saints. Turn to Holy Scripture. Turn to the promises that God made to those who follow Him. Things will not be easy, but the reward waiting for us is worth all of our earthly sufferings! Stay strong in your faith! Love God with all your heart, and set the world on fire!

Due to COVID-19, the Archdiocese of Edmonton is advising parishes to temporarily lay off some employees to save on costs. I have now been temporarily laid off and do not know when I will be returning to ministry. Hopefully the wait isn’t too long. I will miss everyone very much, and please know that I will be praying for you during this difficult time!

Can you play the piano, guitar or organ? Other instruments are also welcome! The keyboard accompaniment for our music resources needs either a grade 5 or 6 proficiency. Playing for Mass does require special skills and experience. This will include acknowledging the music ministry as having a servant-leadership role in the parish, knowing the liturgical cues, being able to accompany singers and improvise, and eventually knowing the musical, liturgical and pastoral judgement needed to select music for various celebrations. You will receive good mentoring! You can join an existing group or choir and apprentice with them, or you can be part of some new groups and choirs that are being formed. WELCOME HOME

40 DAYS FOR LIFE

DID YOU KNOW?

1. What does the word “Epiphany” mean?

In some countries, Epiphany is a holy day of obligation. Where that is the case, it is celebrated on January 6th. In the United States and Canada, Epiphany is not a holy day of obligation, and its celebration is transferred to the first Sunday after January 1st.

The Epiphany shows that “the full number of the nations” now takes its “place in the family of the patriarchs”, and acquires Israelitica dignitas (is made “worthy of the heritage of Israel”) CCC 528.

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church the Epiphany is the manifestation of Jesus as Messiah of Israel, Son of God and Saviour of the world. The great feast of Epiphany celebrates the adoration of Jesus by the wise men (magi) from the East, together with His baptism in the Jordan and the wedding feast at Cana in Galilee.

3. When is Epiphany celebrated?

or manifested to an audience.

An epiphany is thus a time when something is shown, displayed,

“Epiphany” means “manifestation”. It comes from Greek roots that mean “to show, to display” (phainein) and “on, to” (epi-).

2. What is the feast of the Epiphany about?

This varies around the world.

spiritual communion

Singers are needed for new music ministry groups in our parish. Three musicians – an organist and two pianists – have responded to our urgent need for music ministry. Now we need singers to join them!

The requirements for being a singer at Masses in our parish are:

- An attitude of service (not performance) reverence and the ability to work as part of a group.

- The ability to carry a tune – you don’t have to have a trained voice, be able to read musical notation, or harmonize, although those abilities are a great help – but you do need to be able to sing on key and have a voice that can blend with others.

- A regular commitment of time - for practice and for your group’s ministry schedule.

- The Archdiocesan requirements for all parish volunteers – the attendance to the Called to Protect 2.5 hour workshop and completing some forms (application, covenant of care) will be needed.

If you do have a trained voice, if you sang in a school or church choir when you were young, if you have ever thought about being part of the music ministry at Mass, or if you appreciate the importance of musical leadership for public worship and believe that those who sing pray twice, please become part of one of the three new music ministry groups or choirs we are now forming in our parish!

MASS

NORTH OF 60 PROJECT

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

I am also providing two prayers to Our Lady that you can recite at the end of the Rosary, and that I myself will pray in the month of May, in spiritual union with all of you. I include them with this letter so that they are available to everyone.

For this reason, I want to encourage everyone to rediscover the beauty of praying the Rosary at home in the month of May. This can be done either as a group or individually; you can decide according to your own situations, making the most of both opportunities. The key to doing this is always simplicity, and it is easy also on the internet to find good models of prayers to follow.

Dear brothers and sisters, contemplating the face of Christ with the heart of Mary our Mother will make us even more united as a spiritual family and will help us overcome this time of trial. I keep all of you in my prayers, especially those suffering most greatly, and I ask you, please, to pray for me. I thank you, and with great affection I send you my blessing.

The month of May is here, a time when the People of God express with particular intensity their love and devotion for the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is traditional in this month to pray the Rosary at home within the family. The restrictions of the pandemic have made us come to appreciate all the more this “family” aspect, also from a spiritual point of view.

LETTER OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS TO THE FAITHFUL FOR THE MONTH OF MAY 2020

K of C ELECTIONS

“Protectress of the Roman people” you know our needs, and we know that you will provide, so that, as at Cana in Galilee, joy and celebration may return after this time of trial.

First Prayer

O Mary, You shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope.

We fly to your protection, O Holy Mother of God; Do not despise our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from every danger, O glorious and Blessed Virgin.

Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the will of the Father and to do what Jesus tells us. For he took upon himself our suffering, and burdened himself with our sorrows to bring us, through the cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen.

We entrust ourselves to you, Heath of the Sick, who, at the foot of the cross, were united with Jesus’ suffering, and persevered in your faith.

Second Prayer

“We fly to your protection, O Holy Mother of God”.

In the present tragic situation, when the world is prey to suffering and anxiety, we fly to you, Mother of God and our Mother, and seek refuge under your protection.

Virgin Mary, turn your merciful eyes towards us amid this coronavirus pandemic. Comfort those who are distraught and mourn their loved ones who have died, and at times are buried in a way that grieves them deeply. Be close to those who are concerned for their loved ones who are sick and who, in order to prevent the spread of the disease, cannot be close to them. Fill with hope those who are troubled by the uncertainty of the future and the consequences for the economy and employment.

Beloved Mother, help us realize that we are all members of one great family and to recognize the bond that unites us, so that, in a spirit of fraternity and solidarity, we can help to alleviate countless situations of poverty and need. Make us strong in faith, persevering in service, constant in prayer.

Mary Most Holy, stir our consciences, so that the enormous funds invested in developing and stockpiling arms will instead be spent on promoting effective research on how to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.

Be close to those who assist the sick night and day, and to priests who, in their pastoral concern and fidelity to the Gospel, are trying to help and support everyone.

Mary, Consolation of the afflicted, embrace all your children in distress and pray that God will stretch out his all-powerful hand and free us from this terrible pandemic, so that life can serenely resume its normal course.

Blessed Virgin, illumine the minds of men and women engaged in scientific research, that they may find effective solutions to overcome this virus.

Mother of God and our Mother, pray for us to God, the Father of mercies, that this great suffering may end and that hope and peace may dawn anew. Plead with your divine Son, as you did at Cana, so that the families of the sick and the victims be comforted, and their hearts be opened to confidence and trust.

Protect those doctors, nurses, health workers and volunteers who are on the frontline of this emergency, and are risking their lives to save others. Support their heroic effort and grant them strength, generosity and continued health.

Support national leaders, that with wisdom, solitude and generosity they may come to the aid of those lacking the basic necessities of life and may devise social and economic solutions inspired by farsightedness and solidarity.

To you, who shine on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope, do we entrust ourselves, O Clement, O Loving, O Sweet Virgin Mary. Amen.

Needed: construction paper (all colours), lined paper, pencils, pens, pencil crayons, markers, sharpeners, erasers, mixing bowls, thin cutting boards, scrubbers, J cloths, sewing machines, baby and toddler clothes, fur and leather pieces or coats, embroidery thread, yarn, thread, notions, sewing machine needles,

Members of the same family often bear close resemblances to one another. Sometimes physical resemblances are shared within a family, but often the similarities are behavioral characteristics and mannerisms. We hear this observation affirmed through a number of common phrases: “He’s a chip off the old block” or “She’s her mother’s daughter.” Today’s Gospel points to a mystery of faith that might be examined in light of these familial relationships. In Jesus we see and know the Father. Likewise, the Father is known through the life and work of the Son, Jesus.

Talk together as a family about whether people outside of your family recognize common traits of your family. Are there physical resemblances that people recognize and so know each individual as a member of your family? Are there mannerisms that are shared by members of your family? What are some common interests and work that people might associate with your family? As you read today’s Gospel, John 14:1-12, keep in mind that members of the same family share many characteristics, even though each person in the family is an individual. What does Jesus tell His disciples about His relationship with the Father? The relationship between the Father and Jesus is so close that Jesus says that those who have seen and known Jesus have also seen and known the Father. Jesus promises His disciples that because of their faith in Him and in the Father, they too will be able to do the work of the Father as Jesus did. End your discussion by praying together that others will recognize in your family the work of the Father. Pray together the Lord’s Prayer.

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church the Epiphany is the manifestation of Jesus as Messiah of Israel, Son of God and Saviour of the world. The great feast of Epiphany celebrates the adoration of Jesus by the wise men (magi) from the East, together with His baptism in the Jordan and the wedding feast at Cana in Galilee.

1. What does the word “Epiphany” mean?

“Epiphany” means “manifestation”. It comes from Greek roots that mean “to show, to display” (phainein) and “on, to” (epi-). An epiphany is thus a time when something is shown, displayed, or manifested to an audience.

2. What is the feast of the Epiphany about?

The Epiphany shows that “the full number of the nations” now takes its “place in the family of the patriarchs”, and acquires Israelitica dignitas (is made “worthy of the heritage of Israel”) CCC 528.

3. When is Epiphany celebrated? This varies around the world.

In some countries, Epiphany is a holy day of obligation. Where that is the case, it is celebrated on January 6th. In the United States and Canada, Epiphany is not a holy day of obligation, and its celebration is transferred to the first Sunday after January 1st.

Prayer shawls can bring comfort to anyone at this time, be it an illness, a bereavement, a new baby or just plain comfort, as every stitch is a prayer for the person who will be receiving the shawl. When done, they are available from our parish office and Fr. Jozef will kindly bless them. Please call Rachelle at587-290-0090.

PRAYER SHAWLS

POPE FRANCIS’ PRAYER INTENTIONS

1st Sunday of Advent

The first part of today’s Gospel places Jesus’ ministry in the context of the writings of the prophet, Isaiah. Matthew wants to show that Jesus is the fulfillment of the prophecies given to the people of Israel, and he refers to Isaiah to do so. Isaiah says that the Messiah will begin his ministry in Galilee, the land of the Gentiles. When Jesus begins to preach in Galilee, Matthew points to his ministry as a fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy, proof that Jesus is the Messiah.

Pandemic Protocol

· Churches can remain open for adoration for private prayer, provided that no more than 15 people are in the church at a given time, that they observe appropriate physical distancing, and that commonly touched surfaces are

regularly cleaned.

· Confessions can be heard, while observing appropriate physical distancing.

I know you are eager to return to some semblance of normal parish life; we all are. It will happen. Our Lord would never abandon His children. For now, I

am grateful for your continuing co-operation and patience.

· No celebrations of the Mass with any congregation present

· No Baptisms, except in emergency

with no Mass

· Priests can still visit persons in hospital or confined to home who requested Holy Communion, Confession or the Sacrament of the Sick, provided they

follow hospital protocols and practice appropriate risk mitigation.

Therefore, I am writing today to remind you that all the restrictions we announced in March continue to apply until such time that I advise you

otherwise. These include:

SOCIETY OFST. VINCENT DE PAUL

“It is critical that we understand the risks and take steps in minimizing the spread of COVID-19 through prudent planning,” said Bishop McGrattan.

“The health and safety of our parishioners, priests, and church staff are of utmost importance. Each and every life is a precious gift from God, and we are called to do everything in our power to protect them. This has been a tremendous sacrifice on the part of the faithful who strongly desire to celebrate the Eucharist in their parish communities. We are grateful for their cooperation, their patient endurance, and especially for their prayers.”

The Catholic Bishops of Alberta remain committed to the gradual reinstatement of public celebrations of the Mass and welcome the recent release of the Guidance for Places of Public Worship document as part of the provincial government’s relaunch strategy.

The task force is drafting for the Bishops a set of directives for the gradual reintroduction of Masses in public. The Bishops will present these to

Telephone Town Hall with the Premier and the Chief Medical Officer, scheduled for Thursday, May 21.

Any announcement of the date for the gradual reintroduction will be made at least five days before the first scheduled Mass. Parishes by then will have received diocesan guidelines which help ensure the safety of everyone.
