Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE)

• 17,000 Kaiser Permanent CA members white,

educated, employed

• 10 ACE categories: experienced physical,

sexual, and/or emotional abuse or neglect,

witnessed domestic violence, experienced

the loss of a parent, had a parent who had

been an alcoholic, had a mental illness, or

had been incarcerated.

• 2/3 reported at least 1 ACE, 40% 2 or more

• One in six reported 4 or more

RESULTS

People with 4 ACES compared with people

who had none:

- Twice a likely to be diagnosed with cancer or

heart disease

- 7X more likely to be alcoholics

- 6X more likely to have depression

- 12X more likely to have attempted suicide

People exposed to six or more ACEs

died 20 years earlier than those who

had none.

reactions? (safety)

❖ Describe incidents that involve using both the Wizard Brain

and the Lizard Brain. (9/11, Gingerbread Boy, Finding the Green)

Wise Way #2:Build a Constellation

of Support

Double Line – Very Supportive

Single Line – Somewhat Supportive

Broken Line – No Support at All

What is a Constellation?

What does support mean?

Who do you go to when you need help?

What other types of resources can help

you and give you support?

33

Page 34: No Slide Title€¦ · 1. Wizard Brain Over Lizard Brain 2. Constellation of Support Wizard Brain • Use Wizard Brain to Stop & Think about resources that help prevent and solve

Constellation of Support

Awareness of people and what resources to go to for help involves knowing how to evaluate the type of help you

need and identifying the best place to get it

This includes learning how to recognize people who will help you succeed, and

understanding why people close to you may not be able to give you the support you need

Constellation of Support

Think about the people or resources

where you can get help.

What can you do if you feel like there is no one who can

help you?

What to do if the person whom you went to for help makes

the problem worse

Name support resources that aren’t people.

The root of many problems is the inability

to separate fact from opinion.

We tend to listen to gossip, rumor and innuendo

instead of facts.

Problems arise because we

think opinions are facts.

IDentify Your Choices (IDC)Lizard Brain users react without realizing they have choices. This underlies victim thinking as they blame others and think that their lives are controlled by fate, luck,

and/or chance.

Wizard Brain thinkers recognize that they have more than one

choice, and use thinking skills to assess and analyze all their

choices so they make the best choice possible.

Research on BrainWise- OMNI Research: 7th grade students at control and treatment

schools. Students with BrainWise showed improvements compared

to the control school.

- Colorado State University: Data collected on more than

600 K-6 students found improved SEL behaviors and were preseted

as posters at national academic conferences.

- Jefferson County Department of Public Health (Nurses

collected data on 112 families taught BrainWise and found
