GSOD’s Participation in India Day 2008

GSOD participated in India Day’s Independence Parade along with few other community organization. Many Samaj patrons carried Samaj Banner as well as Indian flag. And some did Garba dance. Indian and US National Anthems were sung followed by great stage entertainment including Gujarati kids dance. Samaj had booth presence at the event to promote awareness on our Gujarati culture, values & GSOD benefits.

GSOD’s 2008 Ujani update July 20, Sunday was a day with initial anxiety (shaky weather); but wow it turned out to be a great Samaj Day! Samaj celebrated 2008 Ujani - the annual picnic day at Kensington Metro Park in a style. The outdoor party started at around noon with the ala carte Tasty Khichu and Chaka Chak Taco. Lunch with an Odkaar indeed!

And then started all the fun activities for Kids and Adults. The background ambience with great Music from Subhashbhai and the foreground filled with lots of smiles. Samaj members enjoyed the game masti especially our traditional games like Kothla dod, limbu chamchee … Boy it did remind our back home Indian dhinga masti. Uniquely, the Coin hunt, the Saree wearing competition by the samaj men was really funny. Yes Sumanbhai Raval took lots and lots of pictures including the guys in Sarees. Ha Ha Ha !! Kids enjoyed all their games as well. Seniors really enjoyed the musical chair. Volleyball courts were very busy—the perfect ball game in a park! And did you hear about the Name-that-Song game—it was hilarious – Parvane, Diwane & Mastane teams competed to guess the distorted songs.

The afternoon fun was augmented with Corn, Tea and the delicious Ice-cream. Oh my god! We had great Indian Ice-cream flavors and people just loved it. Later Dinner was served and enjoyed by the patrons. Fantastic Khichadi, Kadhi, Shak, Bhakri etc. from BAPS! Everybody enjoyed great food— yummy lunch & swadisth dinner. Patrons bought lots of Raffle tickets and the finale was superb indeed. Great prizes includ-ing the grand prize of BBQ Grill. Special thanks to EC & BOT team to make this a memorable event! Garba & Raas 101

Garba (Gujarati: ગરબા Garbā), is an Indian form of dance that originated in the Gujarat region. Unlike other famous

types of Indian dance such as bharatanatyam and odissi, garba is much more similar to Western social dancing than the presentational style of the others. The greatest difference between garba and western social dancing is that it is circular and is religious in origin.

The name garba comes from the Sanskrit term Garba Deep. Garba, when translated, most closely resembles the English preposition inside, and Deep is a small earthenware lamp. For this reason, many traditional garbas are performed around a central lit lamp. Traditionally, it is performed during a nine-day festival called Navarātrī (Gujarātī નવરા ી Nava = 9, rātrī = nights). Traditionally, either the lamp (the Garba Deep), or an image of Amba is placed in the middle of the concentric rings as an object of veneration, thereby delineating the dance. People dance around the deity clapping rhythmically. At every step they gracefully bend sideways, the arms coming together in sweeping gestures, up and down, left and right, each movement ending in clap.

Raas or Dandiya Raas, along with Garba, is the featured dance of Navratri evenings in Western India. The word "Raas" comes from Sanskrit word "Ras". Origins of Raas can be traced to ancient times. Lord Krishna performed Raas Lila" (Lila means Lord Krishna's playful dance. Word "Lila" is also referred to things that God does that we do not fully understand. There are several forms of Raas, but "Dandia Raas", performed at Navratiri time in Gujaratis the most popu-lar form. There are other forms of Raas, namely Dang Lila from Rajasthan where only one large stick is used and "Raas lila" from north India. Raas Lila and Dandia Raas are similar. Some even consider "Garba" as a form of Raas, namely "Raas Garba". In Dandia Raas men and women dance in two circles, with sticks in their hands. In the old times Raas did not involve much singing, just the beat of Dhol was enough. "Dandia" or sticks, are about 18" long. Each dancer holds two although some times when they are short on Dandiya they will use just one in right hand. Generally in a four beat rhythm opposite sides hit the sticks at the same time, creating a nice sound. One circle goes clockwise and another counter clock wise. In the west, people don't form full circle, but often form raws. Raas is also performed at social func-tions and on stage.

Garba is performed before Aarti (worshipping ritual) as devotional performances in the honour of the Goddess, while Dandiya is performed after it, as a part of merriment. Men and women join in for Raas Dandiya, and also for the Garba. The Mers of Saurastra are noted to perform Raas with extreme energy and vigour.

Sarvamangala: auspicious goddess

Dhamachakdi Quick Malai Peda Gujarat’s Religious Sites

Dwarkanath Temple in Dwarka is one of the important temples dedicated to Krishna. On the tip of the Arabian Sea it was home to Krishna. The Rann of Kutchch covers a large portion of western Gujarat, and is world-famous for its rare ecosystem, fossils, wildlife and terrain. Palitana Temples are a complex of Jain temples situated 51 km south west of Bhavnagar. There are 863 temples from base to the peak of the Shatrunjaya hill, where the Palitana temples are located. Somnath Temple located in the Prabhas Kshetra near Veraval in Saurashtra, on the western coast of Gujarat, India is one of the twelve Jyotirlings (golden lingas) or symbols of the God Shiva. It is mentioned in the Rig Veda. Somnath means "The Protector of Moon God". The Somnath Temple is known as 'the Shrine Eternal', as the temple has been de-stroyed six times, but was rebuilt on each occasion. Modhera Sun Temple is famous for its rare position as spe-cifically and uniquely designed for the worship of the Sun, Lord Surya. While the main temple is beautifully and intri-cately designed with complex architecture, painting and sculptures, there is a central pond and surrounding it stand 108 small temples for each of the Sun God's 108 names. Shankheshwar Jain Temples are dedicated to the 23rd Tirthankar, Lord Parshvanath. It is believed that this idol was revealed by Lord Krishna himself, by the teachings of Arisht Nemi the 22nd Tirthanakra. It is near Ahmedabad. Patan houses 84 magnificent Jain Temples built by Samrat Kumarpal, who was a staunch disciple of Hemchand-racharya, a Jain monk. Girnar is an epitome of communal harmony & amicable relations among Jains & Hindus. This high-rising steep hill houses shrines of both major religions. One dedicated to Neminath or Arisht Nemi, the 22nd tirthankara, where he is believed to attain nirvana, and another dedicated to Guru Dattatreya,a Hindu deity. Ambaji This temple is dedicated to goddess Ambaji. It is situated on the Arasur Hill and can be approached by road from Abu Road in Rajasthan, as well as from all other im-portant places in Gujarat. A folk drama called 'Bhavai' is performed in the courtyards of the temple. Dakor This temple town dedicated to Lord Krishna is situ-ated about 90 km from Ahmedabad. The temple of Rancho-drai has the idol of Lord Krishna which is believed to have been brought from Dwarka by a devotee. Becharaji This temple is another important seat of Mother Goddess in Mehsana district. This temple is thronged by Hindu devotees, especially childless women. Source: Wikipedia.org

Cottage cheese (paneer) 250 grams Condensed milk 1/2 cup Edible yellow colour 2-3 drops Green cardamom powder 1/4 teaspoon Kewra essence 2-3 drops Pistachios, sliced 10-12

Preparation Time : 5-10 minutes Cooking Time : 10-15 minutes

Method: These quick to prepare pedas of cottage cheese with condensed milk are absolutely delicious too.

Take grated paneer in a pan.

Add condensed milk, mix and cook on medium heat.

Add yellow food colour and mix.

Add cardamom powder and kewra essenceRoast till the mixture is dry and begins to leave the sides of the pan.

Transfer the mixture into a bowl and set aside to cool.

Shape into pedas and place a sliced pistachio on top.

Store refrigerated
