commercial laying hens to make it worthwhile.

They finished up with a laying flock of over 1000hens on top of their 'own' pets, the original ex-

battery hens and several other rare breeds theyhad adopted.

Supreme pets

She says chickens are supreme pets and can be just as affectionate as cats and dogs plus theyproduce 'eggtra' special presents. "They followme around for cuddles. They are very lowmaintenance; they need very little time and

attention and will amuse themselves around thegarden.

"You don't need to take them for a walk and theysave you so much money on eggs."

She says theyunderstand her,too."They knowperfectly well the

"There has been amassive growth in 'grow your own' and peoplewant to know where their food has come fromand the conditions the animals were kept in."

She has started running a 'Keeping Chickens'course to help with the requests from new henowners.

She has 15 clients with rescue hens on herbooks.

Siuna applauds the course. "It is a great idea -

and very enterprising - to make sure peopleknow how to keep them and look after them."

Rehab

As well as her laying hens and own ex batterypets, Sarah rescues hens and re-homes themafter nursing them through 'rehab' as she calls it,the transition from confinement to a free-rangelife.

On average she plucks about 30 chickens frombattery farms a week but Sarah admits it is notalways that easy to walk away from the others.

This week, for instance, she intended to get 30but ended up coming home with 220.

Not all hens survive, though. "A very smallpercentage don't make it but if they make itthrough the first week they can live for anotherthree to five years and they will carry on layingaround 250 eggs a year."

Some can last longer; one of Sarah's neighbourshas a 12 year old chicken. "Once they have beenrescued they take about six to ten weeks to startlooking beautiful again."

If they are still producing eggs why do battery

farmers get rid of them? "Commercially, it's notworth keeping them through their first moult. The battery farm has had the best laying yearout of them although they still have productiveyears left in them."

In Christmas 2008 she decided to quit her day job and concentrate full-time on her animal farm."I've done graphic design since I was 18 and myheart wasn't in it any more. Although I was self-employed and worked from home I needed more

time to spend with the hens. I'm so glad I did."

She now spends the day tending - and singing -to her animals and running her chicken shop

selling poultry products and treatments whichRichard built for her.

It hasn't been completely idyllic, though. She wasdevastated when a fox got in a small gap in thewall and killed 20 ducks. "I ran in the housecrying saying it wasn't worth it and we had tostop. Then some rhea eggs which had been inthe incubator for five weeks hatched and I wasecstatic!"

Now she hasestablished a henhaven she wants toopen a 'hen hospital'next. "I'd love to open adrop-in centre for sick

She also wants to writea warts-and-all book onwhat it's like to becomea farmer in your 30s.Sarah hopes to open aneducation centre, too,for children to learn about the life cycle of theegg and chicken and where food comes from.

So what does her husband make of her henobsession? "Richard is really supportive; he doesa lot of the work here, too. He told me if I wantedto do it I should go for it. Besides, the chickenshop was his idea."

Although Sarah had no previous experience of hens, Richard has poultry in his blood. His familyare from Pilling and for generations they havehad poultry on their farm. He is a property

developer but he spends much of his timehelping out on the farm.

Her daughter - who wants to be a vet when she

grows up - helps out on the farm and wears herHappy Chicks uniform with pride. Although herson loves living on a farm and helps out, too, heisn't too enthusiastic about his mum's obsession.

"I think he's a bit embarrassed his mum 'playswith chickens and sings all day' as he puts it!"laughed Sarah

Evolution has been good to the rooster.

Male chickens can mate with females as often as they like andstill hope to spread their genes far and wide. That's becauseroosters can control how much sperm they expend during asexual encounter, allowing them to use more or less dependingon social and environmental factors.

Two important factors are the competitionwhether otherroosters are mating with the same henand whether a roosterhas already mated with a particular hen.Roosters distribute their sperm resources strategicallyaccording to several factors, including the reproductive value of the female, says Tommaso Pizzari of the University of Leeds,the United Kingdom. His team recently discovered this

phenomenon while studying a group of free-ranging chickens inSweden.

Roosters judge a female's reproductive value by the size of hercomb. Hens with large combs tend to produce large eggs andlots of them. From an evolutionary perspective, fertilizing theseeggs is like hitting the jackpot.

The researchers collected thesemen of roosters who mated withhens in the presence of othermales and alone. The fowl wereaccustomed to being aroundhumans, and the hens woreharnesses to capture semen. Thebirds mated over plastic pads thatcaught any excess semen thatdripped out.A rooster's social status influencedhis allocation of sperm. When adominant rooster facescompetition from other males, hewill expend a lot of sperm andprogressively increase the numberof sperm. This is like buying moretickets to increase one's chancesof winning the lottery.

By contrast, subordinate roostersinvest less sperm if several dominant males are mating withthe same hen. Realizing they have little chance of success, theysave their sperm for another occasion.

This makes sense because it takes energy to produce spermand reserves can be depleted.

Farmers have always known that over time roosters grow lessinterested in mating repeatedly with same hen. By countingsemen, the researchers discovered that roosters also reducethe sperm progressively as they continue to mate with thesame female.But when a new female is introduced, the rooster wants tocopulate and allocates considerably more sperm to his newmate.

The physiology of sperm allocation is not yet clear, but theresearchers plan to hunt for some of the genes involved. They

will have new tools next spring when thechicken genome sequence is likely to becompleted.

When it comes to influencing the contentof new chicken genomes, females have atrump card. Hens are not large enough tofight off a sexual advance, but they cansquirt semen back on a rooster aftercopulating, which lasts about a second.

This behavior was reported three years ago by Pizzari and his colleagues in the journal Nature . Using some of the samechickens as in the new study, also published in Nature, theresearchers found that hens ejected the sperm of all but thedominant roosters in the group, thereby selecting high qualit yfathers for their offspring.

The researchers are testing whether females grow boredmating with the same male. Early results indicate that they d o.

Sometimes, our attempts at positive dialogue with a company

break down and our last resort is a public campaign. While we

always prefer to work cooperatively with businesses, on

occasion even years of dialogue can yield no benefit for

animals and it becomes necessary to publicly call on a

company to do the right thing.

Thats why today were launching a national campaign urgingIHOP to start switching some of its eggs away from battery

cage confinement to cage-free a modest step that many of

the companys competitors have already taken. Despite more

than two years of private discussions, IHOP refuses to change

the fact that all of the eggs it uses come from hens confined in

cages so small they cant even spread their wings. To make this matter even more urgent, yesterday IHOPs

primary egg supplier, Michael Foods, was the subject of a gut-

wrenching undercover expos documenting egregious animal

cruelty and severe food safety concerns. The animal protection

organization that conducted the investigation, Compassion

decomposing corpses of their cage-mates, sick and injured

hens, live and dead hens stuck in their cages wires, and

disturbingly filthy conditions.

The cruelties that the investigation exposes are tragically

nothing new at Michael Foods. A 2006 HSUS investigation of

another Michael Foods factory farm documented similar cruelty,

including live hens confined in cages with corpses, hens

trapped in cage wires, sick and injured hens, and more.

Battery cages are so inhumane theyve even been banned in

IHOPs home state of California (phase-out date of 2015),

thanks to Proposition 2s landslide passage last November.

Please contact IHOP today and ask the company to take a

modest, commonsense step in the right direction by simply

starting to move away from battery cage eggs.

"Crush Video" Investigation Evidence for Federal Law

Today, at an HSUS press conference previewing the U.S.Supreme Courts examination of the federal Depiction of Animal

Cruelty Act , I was brought to tears as I watched outtakes of

several animal crush videos we obtained during an

investigation earlier this year. I dont think Ill soon shake the

images from my head.

Specifically, we released results of a month-long online andemail investigation that uncovered the re-emergence of the

animal crush video industry, in the wake of the U.S. Court of

Appeals for the Third Circuit striking down the federal ban on

the interstate sale of videos depicting extreme cruelty. The

footage, which I will not post here because it is so deeply

troubling, showed the burning of a kitten in a small cage and arabbit and the stomping of kittens, rabbits, and mice. It was just

a small sample of what our investigators obtained.

More than a decade ago, and before the Depiction of Animal

Cruelty Act was enacted, there were an estimated 2,000

separately produced animal crush videos selling on the

Internet, for $15 to $300 each. We recognized immediately thatthis had nothing to do with the expression of ideas, but it was

instead a thriving underground industry built around the most

extreme and unimaginable acts of cruelty. We worked hard in

the Congress to pass legislation to attack the problem, and

helped to enact a federal law in December 1999 .

Because the videos typically do not show anyones face and do

not reveal the names of the people who produce them, the

perpetrators of these abhorrent acts were generally able to

evade prosecution. The law was enacted to eliminate thefinancial incentive driving production of the videos.

With the new law in place, the industry withered, and all but

vanished in the period of a couple of years, based on our

monitoring efforts. The people who committed such vile acts

apparently retreated into whatever darkened dens they live in.

Dogfighters continued to peddle their videos, however, and

there were several successful prosecutions under the federal

law, including that of dogfighting impresario Robert Stevens ,

who was convicted in 2005 of violating this law. He challenged

the constitutionality of the law before the Third Circuit, and that

court overturned his conviction and struck down the entire law

in July 2008. In December, the U.S. Solicitor General filed a cert

petition requesting review of the Third Circuits decision. On

April 20, the Supreme Court agreed to review that decision , and

oral arguments are to be heard on Oct. 6the first animal

protection case before the nations highest court in 15 years.

With the Third Circuit's ill-considered ruling, the noxious crush

video industry has revived and crawled back into view since

last July, with crippling results for animals. The crushing videos

uncovered proved to be readily available for purchase, and its

all documented in a 28-page report we released today. The

password-protected part of one website had a total of 118

videos for sale of small animals, including rabbits, hamsters,

tortoises, quail, chicken, ducks, frogs, snakes, and even cats,

being tortured (including being burned, drowned and having

nails hammered into them) and crushed. Videos ranged in price

from $20 to $100. Undercover investigators also established

contact with another crush website and were offered for sale 12crush videos featuring rabbits at an average price of $50.

This is not speech. This is commercial activity of a sickening

and barbaric type, and the peddlers of this smut should find no

safe harbor for it in the First Amendment.

The courts have recognized that certain well defined andnarrowly limited classes of speech play no essential part of

any exposition of ideas, and are of such slight social value as a

step to truth that they may be regulated based on their

content consistent with the First Amendment. These classes of

speech include fighting words, speech that incites imminent

criminal activity, obscenity, offers/solicitation to engage in

illegal activity, and child pornography. Video depictions of

cruelty should be added to this limited set of activities that are

not protected.

We are pleased that the Solicitor Generals for both the Bush

and Obama Administrations have pushed this case forward.

And we are heartened that 26 state Attorneys General havefiled a friend of the court brief urging the Supreme Court to

reverse the Third Circuits ruling, with not a single Attorney

General taking the opposite stance. But its going to be a tough

case, and groups ranging from the ACLU to the NRA and the

Safari Club International have weighed in on the opposite side.

Their attacks against this anti-cruelty law are ill-advised and

unsound, and their work gives great comfort to animal-abuse

industries that deserve only unflinching condemnation.
