House Attendance Message from our Principal
2
Just like trying the win the lottery ‘you have to be in it to win it’ so students need to be in school in order to maximise their potential. We would like to publicly recognise the amazing achievements of the listed students who have had 100% attendance during the first spring half term from 5th January to 12th February 2016.
Academy Principal, Mrs Woods
House Attendance Message from our Principal
Dear Parents and Friends, How time has flown. A whole year has passed since I took up post as your Principal of Ormiston Endeavour Academy and what an amazing year it has been. Our most recent Ofsted monitoring visit letter clearly describes what we have all achieved by working together for the education of the children who attend our Academy. With your help, attendance is improving; the Academy’s environment is calm and purposeful and our Year 11 students are poised to deliver the best results ever. You may have also had the opportunity to visit the Academy during our very well attended 2
nd Open Evening of the Year
on the 2nd
March where we welcomed Year 5 and 6 students with their parents. We are always more than happy to open our doors to the community so everyone can see for themselves the wonderful learning that takes place daily throughout the academy. The feedback from the evening was very positive and we are looking forward to welcoming a greater number of Year 7 students joining us in September. It is also an important time of year for Year 8 students who are making option choices for the first time. Although the deadline has passed, please do not hesitate to contact the academy if you have any further questions relating to the process. Year 10 have got Work Experience to look forward to later in the year and, with your help, most have organised their own placements. Please can you encourage your child to approach Miss Hart if they are still unsure of where they would like to go during the Work Experience week. Finally, you will be receiving an email soon about the enrichment day at the end of the summer term where students will have the option of two trips depending on their year group. The chosen destinations tend to reflect the level of maturity of each year group and we expect the trips to broadly remain the same year-on-year so the children have the chance to access all of the experiences during their time at the Academy. From September we are going to introduce year round enrichment activities, which will give students further opportunities to develop their experiences outside of the traditional curriculum. We are very excited about what we are going to be able to offer through this initiative - more details to follow in the next newsletter. Have a wonderful Easter break, and if you are the parent of a Year 11 student, please encourage them to take part in the number of revision opportunities they have available to them during this time. We are really proud of all our students who have achieved 100% attendance this term. It will be no surprise to see that many of these students also receive star of the week and do well in their lessons. Being in your lessons and ready to learn certainly maximises your potential! As mentioned in previous newsletters, it's vital that if your child is too ill to attend the academy that you phone every day of the illness to let the academy know. We have set up attendance meetings for students and parents to attend if attendance becomes an issue. We want to work together to remove any barriers to learning and support every child to be at the academy learning. If you have concerns about your child's attendance, you don't need to wait for us to contact you. We are happy to support so either email your Head of House or Assistant Head of House. Adlington: Mr Prior HOH and Mrs Margetson AHOH Holmes: Mr O'Donnell HOH and Mrs Nunn AHOH Redgrave: Mr Langford HOH and Mr Chester AHOH Finally, Mrs Jones our excellent Attendance officer can be contacted during the day via phone on 01473 464545 if you have any questions or concerns with regards to general attendance issues.

We are now only a few weeks away from the GCSE exams and in the Maths department we are pulling out the stops to ensure our Year 11 students reach their potential. The two maths exams are on Thursday 26th May and Thursday 9th June.
We have a final set of mock exams on 22nd and 23rd March to check progress and highlight any last minute issues. There are after school revision sessions with all maths staff on Wednesday nights, and our A/A* candidates meet on a Tuesday night with Mr Brown. Miss Hart’s room is also open every night for extra support for any year 11 student.
There will also be revision sessions during the Easter and half term holidays which are open to all students. The Easter dates are 4th and 5th April 10am-1pm and students can get their mock results at these sessions. During half term the sessions will be Mon 30th and Tues 31st May 10am-1pm, and Wednesday 1st and Tuesday 2nd June 12pm-3pm.
Many students have been issued with a Maths Watch DVD and a revision book which they can use for their own revision at home. Students also have access to MyMaths and Active Learn resources online. If students need their login details they can speak to their Maths teacher.
To help parents support their students with their preparations for the Maths exams we are running a Maths evening. At the evening we will be showing you resources and giving tips on how to best support and encourage their children. The evening will take place on Thursday 24th March, 5pm for Mr Dawkins and Miss Fox’s classes, and 6pm for Mr Brown’s class.
One important way parents can support their children in the Maths work in any year group is to ensure they have the equipment needed. Basic equipment should be pen, pencil, rubber, sharpener, ruler, scientific calculator. It would also be useful to have a protractor and compasses.
Good luck to all the year 11 students. We hope you reach your potential in the exams.

Year 9 – GCSE revision and mock exam preparation. Year 9 students have been diligently preparing for their GCSE mock exam on religion and life. Students have been preparing for their exam with the use of the Ethics revision guide they received prior to half term and there have been lots of focussed exam questions which they have been undertaking in preparation for their mock and GCSE examination in May.
Year 7 – Democracy and voting Year 7 students have been studying democracy and voting, in particular focusing on the UK 2015 general election. Students are finding out why it is important to have democracy and what the effects are if you do not have democracy, focusing on specific case studies. Students are also looking in detail at how a general election is organised and why people may or may not vote. Year 8 – Science v Religion (creation) Year 8 students have been studying the age old conundrum of Science vs. Religion! Students will explore the differences between religious viewpoints on how the world was created, looking at varying religion’s similarities and differences on the topic, and comparing this to the scientific point of view of the big bang and evolution.
In MFL Year 7 pupils have been studying vocabulary connected with places in a town and have acquired some very useful terms which should allow them to order themselves and their parents some delicious snacks and drinks the next time they find themselves in France. Year 8 pupils have been learning about healthy lifestyles and about parts of the body in French. This theme has also been picked up by GCSE students – those pupils studying French are preparing for a written controlled assessment whilst their Year 10/11 counterparts are in the process of completing their final speaking assignment before external examinations in the summer.

29/2/16 time 5:30am Five sleep deprived students, Amy, Rebecca, Hannah, Megan, Jessica and two fully awake members of staff, Ms Stephenson and Mr Langford, departed Ormiston Endeavour Academy on their way to Taunton in Somerset. What was due to be a five hour trip ended up as a seven hour expedition. When we did arrive we were set for battle! At first the students were nervous seeing some of the robots and the number of entrants. However, after a quick pre flight test and some dazzling skills shown of by both the robot and the drivers battle commenced.
The students, all year 10 students battled valiantly and managed to easily secure a place in the semi-finals. However, it was not to be and some of the behemoths vanquished the brave battling ‘’Bot and the team of fearless fighters’’. The students have been meeting in a lunch time club, and over the year have built a robot which could pick up and throw a ball.

Regular Reading at KS3
This term, ‘Regular Reading’ was launched for all Key Stage 3 students. Students were supplied with a reading
journal to record their reading and 15 minutes each day has been dedicated to reading.
The aim of this is to improve student literacy across the school. Students who read regularly are significantly
more likely to be academically successful. Not only do readers often have a better vocabulary and a higher level
of spelling, but they are also more likely to be able to read texts more quickly and to understand the information
within them.
The response from students so far has been really positive and it has been a pleasure to see so many students in
year 7 and 8 engaging with reading.
Year 11 English revision and speaking and listening exams
In the final week of the Spring term, students in year 11 will be taking their Speaking and Listening exams. These
count for 20% of their overall grade and it is essential that students are fully prepared for this.
Over the Easter break, some students will be invited to attend booster revision sessions in order to improve their
exam technique for the English Language or English Literature exam.
Students in year 11 should already have started revising for their GCSE English and English Literature
examinations. Students have all been issued with revision materials and past papers to support them with
this.
If they haven’t done so already, it would be extremely useful for all year 11 students to re-read
the Literature texts ‘Of Mice and Men’ and ‘An Inspector Calls’ in preparation for
their English Literature examination.

Easter Study and Revision Classes We have a range of revision and study classes on offer to students over the Easter break. Students in Years 10 and 11 who are taking GCSE exams this year have been invited to attend revision in a variety of subjects including English and Maths. Details have been published to students, however if you have any questions about dates and times of these study classes, please email your child’s subject teacher or our Raising Achievement Manager, Ms Hart ([email protected]). Students who are attending over Easter must ensure they arrive promptly at the published times at main reception. All students will be asked to sign in and will then attend the study class with their subject teacher, remaining with them while they are in the academy. Students are not required to wear academy uniform but will be expected to arrive prepared for learning, bringing any necessary equipment and study materials which they would normally use. Home Learning Update Thank you to all parents who returned feedback on the proposal that we circulated on homework back in February. We are re-launching homework after the Easter break and will have an academy wide focus on ensuring that homework is set, completed to a high standard and that students benefit from good quality feedback on their extra study. This includes continuing support for students in Years 9, 10 and 11 who are completing GCSE preparations and final revision. As part of this re-launch we are also introducing project homework for students in Years 7 and 8 in some subjects. Look out for upcoming Pompeii projects for Year 7 and Windrush projects set by the Discovery Department, as well as tribal music instrument projects for Year 7 and 8 set by the Create Department. We look forward to some exciting project outcomes later in May!
In our year 7 English lessons, we have been learning about the fine art of persuasive writing. Mrs Baker's group have worked together in pairs to create their own Pocket Money Pitch ( a student version of The Apprentice) They designed and created their own brand of Chocolate and then using their persuasive speech convinced Mrs Baker that they had the best product, ready to go into production. All the students produced excellent speeches and confidently presented their ideas and product. Megan Ward, Naomi Potter and Tula Wright even made the chocolate in their own time and both "Mellow Magic" and "Triplets" were really yummy. The group voted on the most persuasive pitch and alongside Mrs Baker decided that the following students where the winners: Megan Ward, Naomi Potter, Tula Wright, Rinalds Vinbergs, Tristen Garnham, Marquis Mullin and James Brill. However, all of the students were really impressive and are growing in confidence in English. A huge well done to 7EN3.

Once a fortnight for the past twelve weeks, sixteen students from year 11 have been taking part in an exciting rock climbing course at Stowmarket Indoor Leisure Centre's Cragg Wall for our GCSE PE course. We have been learning from a well experienced and agile climbing instructor named Dick Bond, who often goes out rock climbing at dangerous heights in his spare time. Dick has been teaching us students a range of interesting essential skills these past few weeks, such as: belaying a climbing partner, low level transverse climbing, tying the 'figure of eight' and 'bowline' knots that are crucial for safety in climbing and last session we were abseiling down over an overhang/mantel shelf. The course itself is immense fun and a great sport to take part in. The instructors at the Cragg wall are very friendly and can teach the course in a clear and understandable way. We will be taking our physical assessment in the next few weeks showing a range of skills we've learnt over the time of the course.

It's bonus rewards time at Endeavour! In addition to our Vivo rewards scheme, star of the week and rewards room, we have added some extra bonuses to our rewards scheme to say "well done" to all those students who put extra effort into their school life. Our new rewards ladder runs alongside our Vivos and the numbers on the side of the ladder relate directly to how many Vivos a student has. The more Vivos you get, the further up the ladder you go and receive additional rewards to your Vivos. On another note, we are always looking for extra items to add to our in house Vivo shop. If you work for a company that has some freebies we could add to the Vivo shop or our summer fair raffle, please let us know.
Climb the Rewards Ladder when you earn positive points!
