Welcome to Australia, the Great SouthernLand of the Holy Spirit (so named by theSpanish), and the dazzling city of Sydney.

It is a great pleasure for the local national or-ganising committee to welcome you to theXXII Congress of Societas Liturgica, TheLiturgical Year: The Gospel in our time. It willbe the first time the Societas Congress hasbeen held in Australia and indeed the south-ern hemisphere.

Australian culture is a unique blend of estab-lished European traditions and new multicul-tural influences. With a population of morethan 20 million its people are open, friendlyand hospitable.

The country is a diverse landscape of desert,parched waterways, mountains, open cutmines, flat farmlands, tropics, rainforests,bright sunshine and beaches that is home toboth the world’s oldest cultural traditionsand a rich mix of migrant and many ethniccultures. Its flora and fauna are both variedand unique; they are examples of evolutionin isolation.

In the 17th Century, Australia was visited fre-quently by Europeans including explorersfrom England, Holland, Portugal, Spain andFrance. British explorer Captain James Cookclaimed the east coast for King George III ofEngland and called it New South Wales in1770. A harsh Penal Colony was establishedin 1788 at Sydney Cove and this transporta-tion of convicts continued until 1840. Freesettlers populated the coastal ports andmoved inland becoming pastoralists, minersand farmers. The city of Sydney was formal-ly established in 1842.

Die Bevölkerung bestehtaus mehr als 20 Millionen Menschen und istoffen, höflich und gastfreundlich.Die australische Landschaft ist vielfältig: Wü-sten, ausgetrocknete Flussläufe, Gebirge, of-fener Tagebau, flaches Farmland, Tropen,Regenwälder, viel Sonnenschein und Strän-de. Dies ist die Heimat für die ältesten kul-turellen Traditionen der Welt und zugleichfür eine reichhaltige Mischung aus Migran-ten vieler Ethnizitäten. Die Flora und Faunasind artenreich und einzigartig – ein hervor-ragendes Beispiel für die Evolution in derIsolation.Im 17. Jahrhundert war Australien ein regel-mäßiges Ziel der Europäer, wobei sich vorallem Forschungsreisende aus England,Holland, Portugal, Spanien und Frankreichauf den weiten Weg machten. Bienvenue en Australie, le grand pays australdit du Saint Esprit (ainsi nommé par les es-pagnols) et dans la ville éblouissante de Syd-ney.

C’est avec un très grand plaisir que le comitéd’organisation local vous accueille au XXIIè-me congrès de la Societas Liturgica “ l’annéeliturgique : l’Evangile pour notre temps” Cesera la première fois que le congrès se tien-dra en Australie et même dans l’hémisphèresud.

La culture australienne est un mélange,unique en son genre, de traditions eu-ropéennes bien établies et d’influences mul-ticulturelles. La population dépasse les 20millions de personnes. Les gens sont ou-verts, amicaux et hospitaliers.

Le pays est un ensemble diversifié de pay-sages désertiques, voies navigables assé-chées, montagnes, mines à ciel ouvert,plaines cultivables, tropicales, forêts tropi-cales, paysages ensoleillés et plages qui sontla patrie à la fois des plus vieilles traditionsculturelles mondiales et un mélange riche decultures pluriethniques de migrants. Sa floreet sa faune sont à la fois variées et uniques,elles constituent des exemples de l’évolutionen isolation.

Au XVIIème siècle, l’Australie a été large-ment explorée par des Européens d’Angle-terre, de Hollande, du Portugal, d’Espagneet de France. L’explorateur britannique le ca-pitaine James Cook conquit la côte est pourle roi George III d’Angleterre et l’appela LaNouvelle Galles du Sud en 1770. Une colo-nie pénitentiaire très dure (bagne) fut ins-tallée à Sydney Cove et les déportations decondamnés se poursuivirent jusqu’en 1840.

The ancient land is home to the oldest con-tinuous civilizations on the planet. In north-ern parts of the continent indications are thatindigenous Aboriginal Australians may haveinhabited the continent for more than60,000 years, arriving initially by watercraftthrough Indonesia.

The spiritualities of indigenous Australiansemphasise the inextricable connection of theDreaming, the region or country and theiridentity. But Australia, like many other west-ern countries, is becoming known as an in-creasingly secular society. 63.2 % of Aus-tralians identify with a Christian tradition butonly 14.6 % are affiliated with a worshippingcommunity. Other religious faiths include Is-lam, Buddhism, Hinduism and Judaism.

Sydney

The Sydney region has been inhabited for atleast 50,000 years. The local Aborigines re-ferred to it as ‘Warrane’ and there is muchevidence of their culture. Today the largestcity on the continent has a population ofmore than 4.25 million, and covers almost1120 square kilometres (700 square miles).

The City of Sydney has a diverse ethnic mixwith half of its residents born overseas. Al-most 30% of the resident population speaksa language other than English. Apart fromEnglish, the most common languages spo-ken at home are Chinese, Indonesian, Greekand Russian. The city is home to one of Aus-tralia’s largest communities of Aboriginalpeoples.

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is one of thelargest steel arch bridges in the world.Opened in 1932 it is affectionately known asthe ‘coat hanger’ and is the focus for manycultural celebrations. Its eight vehicle lanes,two train lines, a footway and cycle waymake it the central connecting artery for thenorthern and southern regions of Sydney.

Excursions

Three excursion options will all revolvearound the magnificent Sydney harbour. Theiconic Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Syd-ney Opera House dominate the harbourskyline and both are treasured by the peopleof Australia.

1. Art and Culture

Le pont du port de Sydney est l’un des plusgrands ponts en acier du monde. Ses huitvoies de circulations, ses deux lignes detrain, son passage piétonnier et sa piste cy-clable en font l’artère centrale qui relie lesrégions nord et sud de Sydney.

The Art Gallery of New South Wales is oneof Australia’s foremost cultural institutions. Itholds significant collections of European,Asian and Australian Art, including Aborigi-nal Art. It provides a comprehensiveoverview of Australian Art from early times,through colonialism and the present.

The Sydney Opera House is a masterpieceof late modern architecture. Designed byDenmark’s Jørn Utzon it is a graceful pieceof urban sculpture rising from the harbourwith patterned tiles and sweeping sails.Opened in 1973, the Opera House was in-scribed in the World Heritage list in June2007 as a great architectural work of the20th Century.

2. History

Visit the national shrine of Mary MacKillop,ferry or walk across the harbour bridge, ownlunch in the Rocks area, tour of Parramattaleaves the harbour at 1.00pm, finishing atthe Cathedral.

The tomb of Blessed Mary MacKillop inNorth Sydney is the heart of Mary MacKil-lop Place, run by the Sisters of St Joseph. Thecentre is a place of pilgrimage and cele-brates the rich heritage and story of MaryMacKillop, Australia’s first Roman Catholicsaint.

The Rocks, the area around the southernend of the Harbour Bridge, is a restored dis-trict that provides a fascinating insight intothe history of Sydney. It was the landingplace of 1400 men, women and children in1788, more than half of whom were con-victs. It is a popular place for visitors tobrowse on foot at their leisure.

Parramatta is the site of the second Euro-pean settlement. It was settled in 1788 tohelp stave off starvation in the fledglingcolony and today contains many historicbuildings. Parramatta is situated on the Par-ramatta River, about an hour by ferry fromthe harbour.

3. Aboriginal Sydney

Conference Liturgy

The Conference Eucharist will be celebratedin Australia’s newest Cathedral: St Patrick’s,Parramatta. Rebuilt after a fire in 1996, thenew cathedral was designed by RomaldoGiurgola and MGT Architects, the designersof Australian Parliament House in the Aus-tralian capital, Canberra. Its contemporarydesign, choir formation and striking use oflight make it one of Australia’s finest exam-ples of a contemporary worship space.

In addition to the new building and restora-tion of the original Cathedral, a program ofmajor works of art was commissioned to en-sure an integration of art, architecture andliturgical space. In stone, timber, glass andmetal, these works are an outstanding con-tribution to the beauty of the Cathedral andgreatly enhance the worship spaces and en-trances.

It is indeed a superb contemporary space forthe conference liturgy.

Travel to Australia

It is strongly recommended that those whowill undertake travel through a number oftime zones in order to reach Australia allow1 to 2 day’s rest before the conference be-gins. You might like to stay in Sydney whenyou first arrive, and travel to the congressvenue on the day of registration. This willencourage the ‘body clock’ to reset and en-able all who attend to participate fullythroughout the whole week of the confer-ence.

Those travelling from Europe will travel viaAsia, so you may consider with your travelagent a stop over in Singapore or the transitstop for your airline.

Those travelling from the USA will only haveone flight from the west coast of the US toSydney. You might consider travelling viaHawaii and breaking your journey there.

Although the Sydney winter is mild whencompared to that experienced in many partsof the northern hemisphere the temperatureaverages 18° (64° F) during the day and 9°(48°F) at night so some warmer clothes areneeded because our buildings are not al-ways fully heated.

For enthusiasts, skiing is possible in thealpine areas in the States of New SouthWales and Victoria (and also New Zealand)and surfing (or snorkelling) is possible on the

Il est fortement recommandé à ceux qui en-treprendront un voyage avec un décalagehoraire important de prévoir un ou deuxjours de repos avant le début du congrès.Vous pourriez rester à Sydney à votre ar-rivée et voyager vers le lieu du congrès lejour de l’inscription. Congress Venue

The Congress venue is St Joseph’s Centre forReflective Living in Baulkham Hills, Sydney.Set on 40 acres, St Joseph’s is located in thenorthern suburbs about 50 minutes from thecentre of Sydney. Public transport is readilyavailable and details will be available on thelocal committee’s website.

Accommodation

Accommodation for the conference will beavailable at four locations: the conferencecentre St Joseph’s (modern rooms with en-suites), Mt St Benedict’s, Pennant Hills, andMarymount, Castle Hill, (single rooms withshared bathrooms) and the Crowne Plaza (4star hotel, situated near conference centre).A courtesy bus will transport those staying atMt St Benedict’s and Marymount to andfrom the conference venue each morningand evening. More details will be availableon the conference website.

Accommodation will be readily available atall venues both before and after the confer-ence, but you may consider staying in Syd-ney city when you first arrive. The localcommittee is planning some light activitiesfor those who arrive early such as a visit to alocal zoo to see Australian animals (includingsome sleepy koalas).

SHORT COMMUNICATIONS

During the Sydney Congress there will beopportunities for participants to presentShort Communications. These need not berelated to the Congress theme and can be onany liturgical topic. These are often on thecurrent research interests and publicationprojects of the presenter.

Short Communications last thirty-five min-utes including any discussion. Short Com-munications are not moderated and it is upto the presenter to decide how much time isto be allotted to questions and discussion.

If you wish to present a Short Communica-tion, please indicate its title on the registra-tion form. Societas cannot cover the costs oftranslating or copying Short Communicationsor other handouts.

KURZVORTRÄGE

Der Kongress in Sydney bietet wieder Gele-genheit für Kurzreferate zu Themen IhrerWahl. Kurzvorträge brauchen nicht auf dasKongressthema bezogen zu sein. Sehr oftgeben sie Einblick in eines der aktuellenForschungsgebiete oder aktuelle Publika-tionsvorhaben des Redners.

Kurzvorträge dauern 35 Minuten, ein-schließlich der Diskussion. Sie werden nichtmoderiert, und es ist Sache des Redners bzw.der Rednerin zu entscheiden, wieviel Zeit erbzw. sie für den Vortrag ansetzt und wievielfür die Diskussion.

Sie können auf dem Anmeldefomularangeben, dass und zu welchem Thema Sieein Kurzreferat halten möchten. Für Über-setzungen, Kopien oder andere Unterlagenim Zusammenhang mit Kurzreferaten kanndie Societas keine Kosten übernehmen.

RULES FOR ELECTION:

1) A nominations committee be appointedby Council at its meeting between congre-ses; its chair will be the Past President (=David Holeton).

2) Six months before the Congress (= Febru-ary 2009), members will be given the list ofcurrent Council members noting which of-fices will be open for election at the forth-coming Congress.

3) Societas members will then be invited tosubmit nominations for those vacancies (->Nomination Form) - nominations must besupported by two members of Societas andreceive the assent of the nominee; nomina-tions will be open for two months (Februaryto April 2009).

4) It is the responsibility of the NominatingCommittee to seek further candidates shouldit be clear that the electoral slate is notbroadly representative of the Societas.

5) A month prior to Congress (= July 2009),a list of all nominees will be posted on theSocietas web site along with a short biogra-phy and picture of each candidate.

6) Further nominations may be made at theCongress.

7) The Nominating Committee will assurethat all those nominated will apprear on theballot WITHOUT any voting recommenda-tion to members (by asterix, oral direction, orany other means)

8) There will be no nominations from thefloor.

9) Election will be by single transferable bal-lot.

ELECTION:

1) un comité des nominations (nomminatingcomittee) est mis en place par le Conseil lorsde sa réunion intermédiaire (entre deuxCongrès) ; il est présidé par l’ancien Prési-dent (= David Holeton).

5) un mois avant la tenue du Congrès (juillet2009), la liste des candidats sera mise enligne sur le site web de la Societas, avec unebiographie et une photo de chaque candidat

6) d’autres nominations pourront être faitesdurant le Congrès

7) le comité de nomination s’assurera quetous les candidats auront des bulletins à leurnom SANS que n’y soit associée aucunerecommandation de vote à l’intention desmembres (sous forme d’astérisque, de con-signes orales, ou par tout autre moyen)

8) il n’y aura pas de nominations par l’assem-blée

9) les élections se feront au moyen du sys-tème dit « single transferable ballot » ouvote par un unique bulletin « transférable».

REGULARIEN ZUM ABLAUF DER WAHL:

1. Ein Nominierungsausschuss wird vomCouncil ernannt bei der Sitzung des Councils,das zwischen den Kongressen stattfinden.Den Vorsitz dieses Nominierungsausschuss-es hat der Past-Präsident (= David Holeton).

2. Sechs Monate vor dem nächsten Kongress(= Februar 2009) erhalten die Mitgliedereine Liste der gegenwärtigen Council-Mit-glieder auf der vermerkt ist, welche Sitze zurWahl stehen beim nächsten Kongress.

3. Die Mitglieder der Societas Liturgica wer-den sodann eingeladen, Nominierungen fürdiese frei werdenden Sitze mitzuteilen (siehebeigefügtes Formnblatt). Diese Nominierun-gen müssen unterstützt werden von zweiweiteren Mitgliedern der Societas und set-zen das Einverständnis des Nominierten vo-raus. Die Phase der Nominierungen wirdzwei Monate dauern (= Februar bis April2009).

4. Es liegt in der Verantwortlichkeit des No-minierungsausschusses, weitere Kandidatenzu suchen, für den Fall, dass die Liste anvorgeschlagenen Kandidaten nicht dasgesamte Spektrum der Societas repräsentiert.

5. Einen Monat vor dem Kongress (= Juli2009) wird eine Liste aller Nominierten aufder Internet-Seite der Societas veröffentlicht,zusammen mit einer kurzen Biographie undeinem Bild eines/r jeden Kandidaten/-in.

6. Auf dem Kongress selbst können weitereKandidaten nominiert werden.

7. Der Nominierungsausschuss wird sicher-stellen, dass alle, die nominiert wurden aufdem Wahlzettel erscheinen, ohne irgen-deine Wahlempfehlung an die Mitglieder(sei es durch einen Stern, sei es durchmündliche Ansagen oder andere Mittel).

8. Spontane Nominierungen während desBusiness-Meetings sind nicht möglich.

9. Die Wahl wird vorgenommen durch dasSystem der übertragbaren Stimmen (singletransferable ballot).
