Rare complete copy of the 'rst edition of an account of harbours and roadsteads in the Netherlands and the Dutch East Indies, by the bookseller and historian Cornelis van der Aa (1749-1816), written to accompany the 31 beautiful and luxurious plates drawn and engraved ca. 1772 to ca. 1781: large engraved views of the harbours, showing a wide variety of boats and ships, with people engaged in 'shing or trade and 2 showing herring 'shing and whaling. 5ey were 'rst published in a print series and several single prints ca. 1779 to ca. 1781, but those showing the harbours and roadsteads at Batavia and the nearby island Onrust in the East Indies and those showing harring 'shing and whaling do not generally appear in the sets of prints.With a contemporary presentation inscription on the half-title. With some minor stains on a few plates, but otherwise in very good condition and with generous margins. 5e binding with a couple tiny scratches, but otherwise 'ne. Magni'cent views of the busy harbours of the Netherlands and the Dutch East Indies ca. 1780.

First edition, in English translation, of an extraordinary account of the four-and-a-half-year voyage of Mirza Abu Tòalib Khan (1752-1806), a Persian-speaking Shi’ite Muslim from Lucknow in north central India who had worked for the British East India Company. Most remarkable is his astute, detailed and extremely candid social and moral critique of the cultures in the regions he visits, and his anthropological comparison of the various cultures with each other and with his own culture. He refers to opium smoking in Constantinople and India, co(ee shops and tobacco smoking in Bagdad, “a 'ery spirit, called whisky” in Ireland, and much more. He ranges widely over government, legal and 'nancial systems, Napoleon’s rise and many other topics. His frequent accounts and analysis of relations between men and women in various lands are especially interesting.Most quires foxed, but otherwise in good condition, with only an occasional marginal chip, one quire slightly loose, and the title-page in volume 1 with faint o(-setting from the frontispiece. Binding slightly rubbed, and worn at the hinges, but also good. A fascinating 'rst-hand record of a Muslim traveller’s views of European and Asian culture and society ca. 1800.

Rare second(?) edition (one of three dated “1632”) of a popular Greek and Latin school book, edited by the famous Dutch neo-Latin poet, humanist and Leiden Professor of Greek, Daniel Heinsius (1580-1655), 'rst published by Maire in 1626, with 47 beautiful woodcut illustrations made for the 1626 edition by Christo(el van Sichem II. Aesop’s fables were prescribed by the States of Holland in the Hollandsche schoolordre of 1625 as one of the books to be read in the 3rd class. Christo(el van Sichem II (ca. 1577-1658), the second of several woodcut artists in that family, studied with Jacques de Gheyn and was one of the leading Dutch book illustrators in the 'rst half of the 17th century.Although the book has no prize certi'cate or inscription and no owner’s name, the coat-of-arms of the city of Amersfoort on the binding of a school book strongly suggests a prize binding for a student at the Amersfoort Latin school.With an occasional contemporary manuscript note in Greek and Latin. With a small dark stain in the lower inside corner of the foot margin of many leaves, not approaching the text, and with very slight browning throughout, but still in good condition. 5e vellum of the binding is dirty and slightly rubbed but also good. Most endpapers later. A nice little school book with fables by Aesop and others, edited by Heinsius and illustrated by Van Sichem, in an Amersfoort prize binding.

5e third French Aesop adaptation to use the 140 plates originally etched by Aegidius or Gilles Sadeler (ca. 1568/70-1629) for his 4eatrum morum (Prague, 1608), here recordered and with a new prose text, probably written by Henri-François d’Aguesseau (1668-1751), Chancellor of France three times between 1717 and 1750. 5e etching for fable 117 shows an American bu(alo (bizon), the earliest image that really looks like the animal familiar to us tday. “5ese added designs by Sadeler are high-lights in the history of book illustration” (Hodnett).With a 20th-century bookplate and ink stamps. 5e copper plate for fable 90 had lost much of its detail and some others show slight deg-radation, but in general they remained in good condition and are also well printed. 5e corner of 1 leaf has been torn o(, and there is an occasional small marginal tear or faint stain, but the book remains in good condition and has large margins. 5e binding is chipped and cracked at top of the spine and shows a few smaller defects, but is also in good condition. A late showing of 140 of the best illustrations in the Aesop tradition, etched and engraved in 1608.

A handsome edition of Burton’s Arabian Nights, 'nely illustrated and printed in a limited edition of 100 hand-numbered copies. Bold to a fault, Richard Burton travelled to Mecca, explored the African Great Lakes, shocked his readers with his candid travel accounts, and gained fame and riches with his translation of the Arabian Nights. 5e 'rst edition was published in 1885-1888 and re-issued by the Burton Club shortly thereafter. 5e present edition is a reprint of the 'rst Burton Club edition, illustrated with, among others, Albert Letchford’s famous plates. Spines slightly faded. Fine set, uncut and partly unopened.

Julien, printed on India paper, cut in an oval and mounted on a leaf of sti( paper, with caption and imprint litho-graphed directly on the leaf, 16 tinted lithographic plates after Arif Pacha (image size 24.5 × 34 cm). Lacking lithographed title-page. Contemporary black half morocco. € 25,000

A valuable and beautifully-illustrated survey of the costumes worn at the court of the Ottoman Empire. It portrays 80 forms of costume worn by Ottoman functionaries and was published in two issues, the present with the text in French and another with the text in Turkish. Although each plate is labelled “Tome 1er”, no further volume was published in either language. It was also available either with the plates printed in colour

and 'nished by hand (80 Francs), or (as here) with tinted plates (40 Francs). Arif Pacha fought against the Greeks at Athens and at Euboea (1826-1828), and in Syria against Mehmet Ali. In the course of his career carried out missions for the Sultan, who appointed him governor of the province of Silistria in 1861.

Lacking the lithographic title-page, the text leaves somewhat browned and with some plates foxed, mostly in the margins (a couple also with marginal water-stains). 5e sewing has broken, leaving some leaves detached, and the spine is worn.

A surprisingly rare re-issue of the 'rst Dutch edition of D’Arvieux’s Voyage, translated by Gerard Kuipers. Dressed in local costume, D’Arvieux travelled widely in the Levant and was well-versed in Arabic, Turkish, Persian, Hebrew and Syriac languages. He resided in Sidon (or Saïda) from 1653 to 1664, when he was sent on a mission to the Arabs of Mount Carmel, which is narrated in the present work. 5e account includes a general description of the traditions and customs of nomadic tribes and is illustrated with 3 'ne plates. 5e 'rst edition was edited and posthumously published by Jean La Roque in 1717. 5e present Dutch edition is a re-issue with a new title-page of the 1780 edition, printed from the same setting of type, and apparently unrecorded.Binding with some light wear, otherwise in very good condition.

A 3-volume historical manuscript atlas with beautiful manuscript maps, the volumes titled: Atlas historique (37 × 26.5 cm), Souvenirs historiques (31 × 24 cm) and Tableaux et cartes (31 × 24 cm). 5e author is unknown, but the gold on blue binder’s/stationer’s ticket on the front paste-down suggests that the bound blank book was acquired in Montpellier, so the folio volume of the atlas may have been made by or for the unidenti'ed “E.M.” there and the two quarto volumes added soon after by or for a relative or successor “C. du M.”. 5e maps and tables appear on the inside double-page spread of each bifolium, most bifolia in volumes 1 and 2 with a title on the 'rst recto.5e Atlas historique contains 'nely calligraphed chronological tables in 4 to 6 columns displaying events in ecclesiastical history, the history of the Roman Empire and France, from the 'rst century to 1850, with minor historical events and a list of illustrious men in separate columns, followed by coloured dou-ble-page maps of France, the Ottoman Empire, Europe and the Roman Empire. 5e Souvenir historiques has the same structure, but is solely devoted to the history of England, Spain, Germany and Italy, covering the period from the 'fth century to 1850, with coloured double-page maps of the British Isles, the Iberian Peninsula, the German states, and Italy. 5e Cartes et tableaux is the most ambitious volume, containing no fewer than 14 coloured double-page maps, including two world maps, maps of Africa, Asia, America, Oceania, Europe, etc., and numerous chronological tables (“Tableaux”) displaying important events in the history of the world, the Roman empire, France, England, and Spain, followed by genealogical tables of illustrious men and European dynasties. Most of the maps are surrounded by elaborate historical notes. 5is volume notes events to at least 1844.5e set is a 'ne example of 19th-century attempts to present history and genealogy in an informative graphic arrangement. 5e author clearly had great graphic skills and succeeded remarkably well in transforming intricate historical events into an attractive visual survey.5e ink has sometimes left a browned shadow on the back of the leaves or facing leaves and occasionally eaten a small hole in the paper, but the atlas is otherwise in very good condition. Bindings slightly chafed. A graphi-cally vibrant French historical manuscript atlas.

Wine tappers’ book of hours ca. 1555, with prayer to patron saint of vintners

Manuscript in Dutch, written in dark brown and black ink (rubrics in red ink) on paper, in rounded upright gothic hands, mostly 19-20 lines/page, with uncial initials in blue or red, majuscules rubricated throughout, occasional underlining in red. Disbound. Kept in a modern red half morocco slipcase. € 15,000

A manuscript book of hours originally belonging to the (Augustinian?) wine tappers beside the churchyard of the Saint Lambert Church, probably somewhere in the east central Low Countries (now southeast Netherlands or northeast Belgium). 5e prayers to saints include (besides the apostles and other common saints) Lambert, Bishop and patron saint of Maastricht; Martin, Bishop of Tours and patron saint of vintners. Prayers to Saints Dorothea, patron saint of gardeners, horticulture and brewers, and Agnes, also patron saint of gardeners, may appear because of those associations. 5e language is unusual, probably reUecting the border area of the Low Countries and the German states, and we have not found the prayers elsewhere. 5e watermarks were used in the southern part of the modern Netherlands and northern part of modern Belgium ca. 1555. 5e language seems rather old fashioned for 1555 so the manuscript may have been copied from an earlier one.A marvellous contemporary inscription on a detached endleaf notes that the book belongs to the “graeveschen” of the wine tappers beside the churchyard of the Saint Lambert Church and o(ers a substantial reward (literally a good drink coin) to anyone who should 'nd the book and return it.Lacking 6 leaves, and 2 others (plus the 3 surviving endleaves) are detached. Further with some holes and chips, some stains and several pages are slightly dirty or have tattered edges. In spite of these defects, most of the leaves are in good condition. A ca. 1555 book of hours from Dutch wine tappers, especially interesting for the unusual language and texts.

Original and only edition of a rare emblem book produced to welcome count Wirich Philipp Laurens von Daun, Fürst of Tiano (1669-1741), as the new Stadholder of the Southern Netherlands. Wirich Daun, member of a famous Austrian military and noble family, high commander (later 'eld marshal) in the Austrian army during the Spanish Succession Wars, was appointed Vice-Roy of Naples in 1713 and Stadholder (Governor-General) of the Austrian Southern Netherlands in 1725. 5e text is written by the Neo-Latin poet Petrus vander Borcht (1676-1739), a canon of the Coudenberg monastery; the circular emblems are engraved by his brother, Johannes Carolus vander Borcht who makes himself known as the Master of the Imperial Mint at Brussels. 5e engraved title is a chronogram, with the date “1725”. Extra are 4 leaves with an extensive handwritten descrip-tion of the work in French. Fine copy.

It allegorically presents a mirror of self-knowledge and knowledge of the world, intended to improve the faults of the age and show the foolishness and vanity of the world. 5e 'ne plates by Antoine van der Does, showing scenes of rich and frivolous society, are of interest for the costume and morals of the time. 5e “Toe-ghifte”, an integral part of the edition, but with its own title-page on 2D1, rep-resents the world as a capricious woman. 5e portrait shows Van der Borcht at age 21 with the motto “nosce te ipsum”, and a 2-line verse by Ericus Puteanus below. 5e 3 illustrations show realistic genre scenes, inUuenced by Rubens. Half the copies listed by the STCV lack the portrait and/or the engraved title-page.One illustration was printed over a crease in the paper, leaving a white line through part of the scene. In very good condition, with a minor water stain in the head margin of the engraved title, just touching its border. Binding lacking ties, with 1 sewing support broken at the back hinge, slightly wrinkled and a bit dirty, but still good. First edition of a satire of society, with plates made for it by Antoine van der Does.

Expanded version, in the original Latin prose, of a 'nely engraved emblem book by the Bruges canon and archdeacon Antoine de Bourgogne (1593/94-1657), with 50 emblems, one for each of the 50 numbered chapters. 5e book systematically contrasts vanity and truth, and dwells on the vanities of the world proven false by truth. 5e richly designed emblems are intended to illustrate both sides, the true and false side of each subject covered. 5ey are of special interest for their unusually detailed and 'nely engraved scenes from daily life in the Low Countries ca. 1639: contemporary dress, interiors, street scenes, Dutch and Flemish buildings and landscapes, various trades with their tools, equipment or products, etc. No. 3, showing a printing o}ce, depicts the press much more accurately and in more detail than in the famous 1694 print by Jan Luiken, though the letters visible in what is apparently supposed to be a type case bear no resemblance to printing types.With an 1874 signed presentation inscription in English to the Rev. Serjeant (J. S. Serjeant, d. 1882) from a member of his congregation. Lacking a singleton leaf printed on one side, found at the end of some copies, apparently with a few addenda additional to those on the previous page (no addenda appear in the 'rst edition). 5e binding is somewhat scu(ed, worn at the hinges, but it is still good, structurally sound, and the gold tooling on the spine is well preserved. A fascinating emblem book with 50 'nely engraved emblems.

It includes an unusually wide variety of 8 world maps in various projections, including even a cardiform map (an informative 4-page note on the use of the maps discusses the projections and other matters). It also includes maps of the 've continents, various European countries, 10 provin-cial maps of the Dutch Republic and the northern parts of the Austrian Southern Netherlands, Greece, the Black sea and countries surrounding it and 2 maps covering the Mediterranean Sea and regions surrounding it. Many include the coat of arms of the country or province. 5e text gives descriptions of each region with information about their topography, products, character and ethnogra-phy, government, trade and travel, weights, measures and money, history, heraldry, famous people and inventions.With an 1795 owner’s inscription on the title-page. Lacking the folding plate of maritime Uags and with an occasional stain or minor (usually marginal) defect, and with the added tabs tattered, but generally in good condition and only slightly trimmed, leaving generous margins. 5e binding has cracks in the hinges and spine, scu(ed sides and the fore-edge corners restored. A rare portable atlas especially intended for merchants and with an unusually wide variety of world maps.

Rare edition of a collection of letters on Islam and Arabic by the Louvain scholar Nicolaus Clenardus (or Cleynaert, 1495-1542), “an outstanding humanist noted for his Arabic studies” (Dannenfeldt). Clenardus learned Arabic in Evora (Portugal), using a text by Ibn Sina and an Arabic version of Galen’s commentaries on Hippocrates. In 1533 he joined Prince Henry of Portugal, archbishop of Braga, and established a humanist college in Braga, which he directed until 1538. With Henry’s support, he travelled to Fez (Morocco) to obtain manuscripts and to deepen his knowledge of Arabic and Islam. He returned to Granada in 1541, where he died the next year; he was buried in the Alhambra. Today, his fame rests on the present learned and sparkling letters, containing his observations on the Quran, Arabic grammar and Islamic culture, with numerous quotations in Arabic.With contemporary owner’s inscription on the back of the title-page, foliation added in manu-script, slightly browned and cut short. Otherwise in very good condition.

After the journal itself follow two letters to the Dutch States General, one from the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed IV (1642-1693) and one from the governor (Caïmacam or Kaymakam).With a few faint and mostly marginal stains, but otherwise in very good condition. Two works with beautiful hand-coloured plates of Turkish costumes illus-trated by Octavien Dalvimart and 5omas Charles Wageman. 5e 'rst work is a later reprint of the edition from 1802, on paper watermarked 1811 or 1817 and probably published by 5omas McLean to accompany 4e military costume of Turkey, here bound together. Dalvimart travelled in Turkey around 1798 where he made drawings on the spot and the text of the 'rst part was probably written by William Alexander. Including plates of the o}cers of the Grand Signor, the women of the island of Andros, a military chief of Upper Egypt and the mameluke of Constantinople. With the bookplate of L.F. A splendid composite atlas in a beautiful and well-balanced colouring, probably from a single professional workshop, including the work of Johannes Danckerts, Justus Danckerts, 5eodorus Danckerts, Cornelis Danckerts, Carel Allard, Abraham Allard, Nicolaas Visscher I & II, Frederik de Wit, Pieter Mortier, Caspar Specht) and even a map of North America by Alexis-Hubert Jaillot in Paris.5e makeup of the atlas resembles that of one published by 5eodorus and Cornelis III Danckerts sometime between 1703 and 1713 (Koeman, Dan 4). Not only do 13 of the present 20 Danckerts maps and plates appear in that atlas, but it also apparently begins with the same allegorical title-page, drawn by Gerard van Houten and engraved by Petrus Schenk I and ends with the same plate of Uags. Both include Cornelis Danckerts’s Nieuw Aerdsch Pleyn, a world map in an equidistant polar projection. Although nearly half the maps in the present atlas are by the Danckerts family, several of the most recent maps in the atlas are by Pieter Mortier, but given the strong French Uavour of his atlases, the present does not seem to 't into his oeuvre.With the title-page somewhat tattered and with a restoration a(ecting the end of the banderole, but generally in good condition, with occasional minor tears and folds. 5e 'rst edition of any early text of the Book of Revelations in the ancient Syriac language, a book that had been lacking in the manu-scripts followed by the earlier Syriac New Testaments. It is also the 'rst book the Elzeviers printed with Syriac or any other “oriental” type, their earlier forays into printing with non-Latin types having been limited to Greek and Hebrew. 5e main text is set in two columns, with the Syriac text set in Syriac type on the outside and the Syriac text set in Hebrew type on the inside, an aid to scholars less familiar with the Syriac script. Two columns in smaller type at the foot provide the original Greek text and a literal Latin translation of the Syriac. 5e whole is well printed and laid out, showing why the Elzeviers were quickly gaining a reputa-tion as the leading scholarly printers and publishers.In 'ne condition and with large margins. 5e binding is very slightly rubbed but still very good. A 'ne copy of an important work of biblical scholarship and a showpiece of the Elzevier’s press at the beginning of its golden age.

We have not succeeded in identifying the artist of these beautiful drawings. We know no other drawing that is clearly from the same hand. Two artists are mentioned as possible candidates, Govert Flinck (Cleves 1615-1660 Amsterdam) and Gerbrand van den Eeckhout (1621–Amsterdam–1674). 5e present drawings are probably made around the middle of the 17th century in Holland. 5e composition is similar to some papers in Uorilegia, such as 5eodor de Bry (1611/1612 to 1641 and later), but they never show so many species and the Uowers on a sheet. 5is study could be a sketch for a painting, not necessarily a Uoral still life, possibly a landscape.We are grateful to Dr. Sam Segal for his kind assistance.On the front drawing are visible:1. A sumptuous and extremely rare tribute to the British Raj and a detailed history of the princely families in India by the distinguished orientalist Edward Backhouse Eastwick (1814-1883), prompted by the proclamation of Queen Victoria as Empress of India in 1876. 5e 'rst volume contains three cantos, with a transla-tion into Persian verse by Amir Jan, followed by a history of the Nizáms of the Dakan; the second volume contains cantos IV and V with a translation into Hindi verse by Kaviraja Syamala Dasa of Udaipur, followed by a history of the Rájpúts.5e work is beautifully decorated, and illus-trated with 'ne photographic views of palaces, tombs, gates, etc., including the mausoleum of the Emperor Humayún, the tomb of Nizámu’d–dín, the caves of Ajanta, the Palace of Nizám, the Hall of the 66 pillars and the Jama Masjid, the largest mosque in India. It further includes photographic portraits and 'nely chromolithographed coats-of-arms of several members of the English and Indian aristocracy.Some smudges and spotting, the frontispiece portraits pulled loose from the title-page, but still attached to the endleaves. 5e bindings show some wear, the 'rst volume with some stains and scratches and one headband nearly detached. Letter on the Mamluk-Ottoman power struggle in Egypt that would bring Muhammad Ali to power in 1805

A signed autograph letter by William Drummond (1770-1828), Scottish classical scholar, poet and British ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, written in Bucharest en route from Constantinople (Istanbul) to Berlin. 5e British had taken Alexandria from Napoleon’s troops on 2 September 1801, but abandoned it in March 1803, disappointing the Mamluks and their leader Muhammad Bey al-Al', who had supported the British against the French and Ottoman forces and remained in Alexandria. 5e Ottomans, facing 'nancial troubles, disbanded their non-Turkish forces without pay, and their Albanian captain Muhammad Ali (1769-1849) and his troops in Cairo mutinied and wrested control of the city from the Ottoman governor. Although this put the Albanians on the British and Mamluk side against the French and Ottomans, the Mamluks were not prepared to leave Cairo in Albanian hands. Drummond therefore notes in the present letter that the latest news when he left Constantinople was that the “Beys” (Mamluk forces under Muhammed Bey al-Al') had raised the siege of Alexandria and returned to Cairo due to “a mutinous spirit” among their “new allies”, the Albanian troops, and he regrets that the “French interest” among the Mamluks “has taken a decided ascendancy.” In the event, Muhammad Ali was to prevail in 1805 when Sultan Selim III in Istanbul recognised him as his viceroy in Egypt.In 'ne condition. Best edition of a classic Arabic grammar, with fables, proverbs and quotations

5ird edition, expanded and edited by Jacobus Golius, of Erpenius’s classic Arabic grammar, 'rst published in 1613. 5e present edition is augmented with an Arabic chrestomathy that Fabricius had published in 1638. Erpenius (1584-1624) revolutionized Arabic scholarship in Europe and made the Netherlands the most important European centre of Arabic studies before he died of the plague in 1624. His 1613 grammar remained the standard work in the 'eld for two centuries. Golius, Erpenius’s most dis-tinguished student, succeeded him as Professor of Arabic and other oriental languages at Leiden University. He had published his monumental Arabic lexicon in 1653.With the owner’s inscription of the doctor and medical writer L.P. Jallat (1792-1864) on a free endleaf, and a meticulously lettered note on p. 42 of the Lockman fabels. Some small defects, but otherwise in very good condition, with only a small marginal tear repaired, a half-dozen leaves with slightly browned patches, and an occasional minor and mostly marginal spot or stain. Binding with a restoration at the head and foot of the spine but otherwise good, with slight wear at the hinges and extremities. 5e best edition of a classic Arabic grammar.

Allegorical and devotional pen drawing with text by Jacobus Joannes Evert (1735- 1789), who was born without hands and feet and made this work using his short arms. Below we 'nd a self-portrait of the artist, sitting on a table with writing utensils. With a remarkable broadsheet, announcing Monsieur Evert’s performance of “verscheide merkwaardige Kunsten” (various remarkable tricks) in an inn during the fair at Malines, includes a list of 13 tricks which he was able to perform.Ad 1: slightly soiled. Ad 2: edges slightly frayed and slightly foxed. Both items in good condition. Artefacts made by “freaks” from earlier centuries are extremely rare and the present drawing is here o(ered with a broadsheet announcing the extraordinary act.

First edition, in the original Latin, of the most popular spiritual love emblem book ever published, illustrated with the beautiful emblematic designs of the great baroque artist Boetius Adamsz. van Bolswert (ca. 1580-1633). Herman Hugo (1588-1629), a Jesuit priest who lived in Antwerp and elsewhere in the southern Low Countries, made the genre popular throughout Europe with his Pia desideria and especially its beautiful emblems by Van Bolswert. Its emblems, mixing heart-warming scenes of tenderness with dire warnings to sinners, even inspired the Protestant Jan Luyken’s Jesus en de Ziel. 5ough the use of the Latin language would have demanded a fairly well-educated reader, it was still the language of the Catholic Church and the book clearly spoke to the common people. For this reason, the emblems depict people (often represented by putti) in daily life.With early owner’s inscriptions on title-page mostly erased and a 17th-century interlinear inscription between the 'rst lines of the dedication, and a 20th-century bookplate of Jos van der Steen. With a small rust hole in 1 leaf and an occasional, usually marginal brown stain, but still in very good condition. A seminal emblematic work mixing heart-warming scenes with dire warnings, both from daily life.

First Dutch translation of one of the most popular 18th-century books on the Paci'c, and the main source of early knowledge of the Pelew or Palau Islands in Micronesia, 'rst published in London as An account of the Pelew Islands (1788). In 1773, the Antelope under command of Captain Henry Wilson was shipwrecked near one of the Palau Islands, a previously unexplored group. 5e crew managed to reach shore, where they were well treated by the natives. 5ey built a small boat from the wreck, in which they reached Macao. 5ey took Lee Boo, the son of Abba 5ulle, King of the Palau Islands, with them to England where he made a very good impression. Unfortunately, he soon died of smallpox. 5e map covers from the equator to 24°N latitude and from 110 to 159°E longitude (from Borneo and the south coast of China in the west to the western Caroline Islands).With a minor stain in the front endpapers, slightly a(ecting the margin of the 'rst portrait, but not approaching the image. 5e publisher’s letterpress spine label was probably printed on the otherwise blank 2Z4, which has therefore been removed. Fine untrimmed copy with many bolts unopened. Binding rubbed and spine-la-bel torn.

First and only edition of Kersteman’s extremely rare “histoire scandaleuse”, describ-ing the Uagrant life of Madame de Pompadour (1721-1764), mistress of Louis XV. 5e book is described on the title-page and in the preface as a defence against the slanderous biographies published by the French and English. 5is apparently couldn’t convince the French ambassador Louis Augustin d’A(ry, who had, imme-diately after publication, destroyed the full run after buying all available copies for their full price, to defend Madame de Pompadour her good name. With modern bookplate on pastedown. 5e engraved frontispiece is possibly transferred from another work and has a small restored tear in the margins. Faint dampstain in the last quire and a few spots throughout. Good untrimmed copy. 5e original wrappers soiled, but the vellum very good.

First and only edition of a set of plates illustrating seven paintings by Gerard de Lairesse (1640-1711) in the council room of the former Court of Justice of Holland, Zeeland and West Friesland (now called the Lairesse room) in the Binnenhof in 5e Hague. 5e Court commissioned the paintings in 1684 and they were completed by 1688. 5ey depict Aeneas carrying his father Anchises, an allegori-cal 'gure of Justice and 've scenes from ancient Roman history, each represent-ing a di(erent virtue: Pompei (prudence), Scipio (moderation), Horatius Cocles (courage), Scipio again (steadfastness) and Papyrius (clemency). 5e printed image of each plate measures about 40 × 28 cm. In three cases the painting 'lls the plate; the other four paintings, being more or less square (about 23 × 23 cm to 29 × 29 cm in the plates), are depicted within the architectural context. A contemporary photo-engraved reproduction of a 19th-century manuscript in three parts, by two authors from the Saigon interpreters college. Since the binding dates from the late 19th-century, the manuscripts must have been reproduced soon after they were written down in 1885/1886 and they may have been written explicitly for reproduction.Ad 1: 5e 'rst work is a lecture on the Dutch East Indies by the Frenchman Charles Célestin Anthony Landes, director of the college of interpreters in Saigon. It contains chapters about each of the islands that belong to the archipelago: Sumatra, Java, Borneo, Celebes, the Moluccas, New Guinea and some other small islands. For each island it gives an extensive description of the people, the government, the products, etc. Furthermore it contains chapters about the general geography, climate, the physical constitution, the natural products, minerals and fauna. Cordier mentions an autograph without giving a location. 5e online catalogue of the Bibliothèque nationale de France records the only printed copy we have located.Ad 2-3: 5e other two parts are translations of two stories from the Chinese fable Chin-ku chi-kuan (“wonders of the present and the past”) translated by the well-known Vietnamese scholar Pétrus Ky (1837-1898), who was also associated with the Saigon interpreters college. Jean Bouchot called him “the only scholar in Indochina and even the modern China”. 5e name of Pétrus Ky appears nowhere in the book, but the work appears (without a location) in the list of Ky’s publications on the website http://www.vietgle.vn.Very good copy, Uyleaves slightly foxed and spine a bit rubbed.

Large etched and engraved print showing the sensa-tional and humiliating defeat of the English by the Dutch at the Battle of the Medway at Chatham, near Rochester. Langendijk places the viewer in the midst of the action, so that one sees the ships, people and the hand-to-hand combat on the rowboats in the fore-ground in the greatest detail. It was the decisive event of the Second Anglo-Dutch War, forcing the British to agree to end the war with a settlement favourable to the Dutch a month later. It was also the crowning achieve-ment of the great Dutch admiral Michiel de Ruyter (1607-1676). 5e daring raid was planned by the Dutch Grand Pensionary Johan de Witt and carried out under command of Admiral De Ruyter, accompanied by De Witt’s brother Cornelis.Trimmed down to the edges of the image and text, but without loss and in good condition, with only some traces of former mildew slightly a(ecting the caption and the water at the foot of the image, and a few tiny holes or small marginal tears repaired. 5e margins have been extended with Japanese paper. 5e most detailed and spectacular view of the Battle of the Medway.

5ird state of the 'rst map of the Netherlands on such a large scale, mostly about 1:105,000, but with some eastern regions squeezed in at about 1:140,000. Fully assembled it has an image area of about 231 × 152 cm. 5en as now, foreigners used the name “Holland” to refer to the entire Northern Netherlands, at this time comprising the seven provinces of the Dutch Republic. Zeeland falls almost entirely outside the borders of this map, however, so it covers the provinces of Holland, Utrecht, Friesland, Groningen, Overijssel and Gelderland (Drenthe was admitted as a province independent of Overijssel only in 1796). Originally published by Le Rouge in 1748, the plates were revised for publication in a second state by Jean Crepy ca. 1770, and in a third by Jean A. Dezauche in 1790.2 sheets with slight glue stain in blank margins. Boxes a bit rubbed and scratched. Fine, well-preserved copy.

Second edition, published in the same years as the 'rst, of a comprehensive work on the history of the kingdom of Siam, “Universally regarded as the 'nest work on seventeenth-century 5ailand” (Wyatt). 5e French diplomat Simon de La Loubère (1642-1729) was appointed as Louis XIV’s envoy extraor-dinary to the court of Siam, and while he stayed in Siam for only three months he diligently and sys-temically asked questions, “probably stimulated by the Jesuit scientists who accompanied the mission to take more than a passing interest in Siamese cosmology, astronomy, and mathematics” (Lach & Van Kley). Loubère compensated his short stay with a thorough study of earlier writers, referring to twen-ty-three European authors from Pinto to Gervaise in the 'rst volume and collecting French translations of native works in the second. Besides presenting infor-mation on Siam alone, Loubère also incorporates information on India and China and their inUuence on Siam’s past.A third edition appeared in 1700, followed by editions in 1713 and 1714 and it was translated into English in 1693 and into German in 1800.With the armorial bookplate of “Antonius Ernestus Burcardus’’ on pastedown. Very rare publication with 10 very detailed plates depicting the anatomy of the horse. In his preface the author-artist Joseph Machold (1824-1889), painter, illustrator and a former o}cer in the Austrian army, explains that this publication was made by order of the Austrian army to educate the soldiers in the anatomy of the horse and that the Ministry of War gave him the opportunity by to conduct the studies he needed to produce it in the Royal veterinary institute in Vienna. His paintings were litho-graphed by Varrone and the plates printed by F. Köke in Vienna. Holzhausen, the printer of the letterpress text, was printer at the printing o}ce of the Imperial University.With an ink stamp twice on the front wrapper. In very good condition, with marginal restora-tions to the title-page, some text-leaves frayed and marginally soiled; the plates with some spotting. Front wrapper soiled and with tears repaired. Rare work detailing the Antwerp Feast of Our Lady of Victory on 7 October 1771, commemorating the Battle of Lepanto (7 October 1571), where the Holy League famously defeated the Ottoman Ueet o( the coast of western Greece. It opens with an account of the battle, followed by detailed descriptions of the commemorative festivities. At the time of the battle, the Ottoman Empire was regarded as a serious threat to Christendom and the victory encouraged false hopes of its imminent collapse. Pope Pius V instituted the annual Feast of Our Lady of Victory, which was changed into Our Lady of the Holy Rosary under Gregory XIII, and is today known as the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. First edition of an extremely rare and possibly unique broadside (the only edition in the original German) printed and published near the end of the 1683 Ottoman siege of Vienna, apparently written by (and certainly based on fresh reports by) an eye-witness, published at the most desperate moment of the siege, less than two weeks before Imperial and Polish reinforcements arrived to rescue the city.5e report gives background information beginning with the 1664 peace treaty and unsuccessful attempts to renew it in 1682. But it centres on the events unfolding at the time of publication. In addition to details about the progression of the troops, it gives information about the forti'cations, about artillery used by both sides and it accuses the Ottomans of barbarous deeds and espionage. It discusses the roles of the Turks, Tatars, Transylvanians, Wallacians and Moldavians. It also reUects recent technological advances, such as the use of a telescope and the Ottoman use of powerful explosive mines to breach the heavily forti'ed city walls.5e band of Ueurons at the head of the broadside and the rule at the foot have been partly trimmed o(, but the broadside is otherwise in good condition, only slightly tattered at the edges, with a couple creases in the paper and one or two very small holes and spots. Only copy located of an account of the Ottoman siege of Vienna published while it was still in progress.

First and only edition, limited to 50 copies, of one of the earliest and best transla-tions into any European language, of some tales from the Persian 5outhi-Nameh or Tutinama (Tales of a parrot), namely the 'rst 6 of a series of 52 tales attributed to Ziya al-Din Nakhshabi, an Islamic physician and Su' saint who moved to India where he wrote the story cycle ca. 1335. It is based on a series of Sanskrit tales and became extremely popular in Mughal India in the 16th century. 5e stories, mostly about love, are presented in a frame story, told by a parrot on 52 consecutive nights to distract his master’s wife from going out to see her lover. 5e present edition was translated from the Persian into French by Guillaume Stanislas Trébutien (1800-1870), who dedicated it to the Comte de Montlivault. An appendix contains Trébutien’s translations of excerpts from 4 stories by the great Persian poet Hafez (ca. 1315/17-ca. 1389/90) and the author’s introductory verses. 5e translator presented this copy to Chênedollé (1769-1833) in Caen, “comme un hommage du profond respect et de la sincère admiration”. Foxed throughout, but otherwise in very good condition. 5e wrapper shows a few small chips and tears, but is also very good. A pioneering translation of 14th-century Persian tales.

Large paper copy of the 'rst edition, in the original Dutch, of “the de'nitive account” (Howgego) of the embassy that the voc (Dutch East India Company) sent to the Emperor of China, the entire trip occupying the years 1655 to 1657. Nieuhof’s eyewitness account was the 'rst extensively illustrated book describing China and is, among works on China, “bis heute eines der bedeutendsten und gesuchtesten” (Walravens). 5e second part gives a general description of the Chinese empire, including botany and zoology. 5e 'rst part covers the East Indies and Southeast Asia before going on to China itself. Japan, Korea and Formosa appear as well.Nieuhof served as steward, artist and chronicler on Pieter de Goyer and Jacob de Keyzer’s voc embassy to the Chinese Emperor. 5e party got a more intimate view of China than almost any other Dutch visitors of the 17th century, and the breadth of Nieuhof’s interests and the large number of drawings he made provided a wealth of new material that makes the present work an essential primary source.With the library stamp on frontispiece. Some foxing on the engraved folding map, one tiny hole in the lower margin of a plate, a few occasional spots (primarily in the prelim-inaries), otherwise in very good condition with the plates in very crisp impressions. 5e binding slightly rubbed on the sides and spine, the hinges partly cracked and the head a bit damaged, but still in good condition and with the tooling still clear.

5ird edition of Ockley’s most famous work, presenting Islamic history from 632 to 705, based on Arabic sources. “One of the most important steps in the introduction of Arab culture to Europe was the decision to use Islamic sources in order to write a history of the Arabs. 5is step was taken by Simon Ockley. It is based mainly on a manuscript in Oxford [Bodleian Library] wrongly attrib-uted to the historian of the eighth century, al-Waqidi, but in fact composed at the time of the Crusades. Ockley accepted al-Waqidi’s authorship, but was also acquainted with other historians such as Ibn Duqmaq, Ibn Abd Rabbah, al-Suyuti and Abu al-Fida” (Hamilton).It was 'rst published in one volume in 1708 as 4e conquest of Syria, Persia, and Aegypt by the Saracens, dealing with Islamic history under the 'rst three caliphs. Ten years later Ockley published a continuation entitled 4e history of the Saracens. 5e present edition was augmented with a Life of Mahomet, sometimes ascribed to Roger Long, but most likely written by Leonard Chappelow. With a 1914 bookplate on pastedown with the owner’s monogram “HJK”, the motto “semper 'delis” and an open book with “Poles 1913”. Some minor browning and in 1 leaf a marginal tear, but still in good condition. 5e binding is rebacked as noted, but otherwise good.

Johannes Olivier was born in Utrecht and left for the Indies in 1817 where he became secretary of Muntinghe and Van Sevenhoven. In 1823 he was 'red for excessive consumption of alcohol and was transferred to the colonial navy. He wrote several works on the Dutch East Indies. Binding edges slightly rubbed; some foxing through-out; one plate loosening; the map with tear in margin. A good set of this educational travel account.

Extremely rare booklet (only one other copy could be traced), the 'rst edition with a description by Jan Vos of a garden, or amusement park, called ‘Oude Doolhof ’ (Old Labyrinth or maze), published as a souvenir or ‘Uyer’. 5is 'rst Doolhof, called the ‘Oude Doolhof ’, was founded at the Looiersgracht at Amsterdam by the wine merchant and inn-keeper Vincent Jacobsz. Coster before 1625. In fact it was a kind of combina-tion of a seventeenth-century ‘Madame Tussauds’ and an amusement park. 5e garden was composed of a labyrinth in which fountains and automata were displayed, showing historical & biblical 'gures and spectacles. 5e illustrations, according to Franken implicitly after C. van de Passe (who lived also at the Looiersgracht at the time), show the sights and spectacles of this labyrinth. 5e lower corner of the title-page and the 'rst plate gone. It contains the text of 92 Phaedrus fables with extensive anno-tations (the 'rst edition of 1596 had only 64 fables). 5e fables are followed by an “index vocabularum” and an “index rerum & verborum”. 5e preliminaries include several laudatory poems and a letter by Conrad von Rittershausen, who was the 'rst to provide the Phaedrus fables with scholarly commentary, espe-cially those of use for lawyers, published at Leiden in 1598. In the 17th century, especially in the Netherlands, these learned editions were very popular, o(ering an increasingly growing apparatus of word explanations, variants of texts, correc-tions of texts and personal comments.With the 1890(?) bookplate of Dr. Felix Durosier on pastedown. Author’s fair-copy manuscripts of two important and inUuential Dutch essays on the applied arts and society, written by the artist, craftsman, teacher and writer Richard Nicolaüs (“Rik”) Roland Holst (1868-1938), husband of the Marxist poet Henriette Roland Holst-Van der Schalk and uncle of the poet Adriaan Roland Holst. Both essays were published in the journal De nieuwe tijd. 5ese essays helped to promote in the Netherlands ideas that had been introduced by John Ruskin in England in his essays “Unto this last” (1860) and especially “On the nature of gothic” (1853), and promoted and put into practice by William Morris and the Arts and Crafts Movement in the next four decades.5e wrappers of both essays have come loose, and some leaves in the 'rst also show minor damage to the fold around the sewing, but they are still in very good condition. Author’s manu-scripts of two essays inUuential in the develop-ment of Dutch 'ne and applied arts.

First Dutch edition of one of the 'nest works on insects ever produced. 5e Dutch edition is in many ways preferable over the original German, being on better paper and the plates coloured with much more care. 5e German original was published in Nuremberg in 1746-1792 as Der monatlich-herausgegeben Insecten-Belustiging. 5e translator was Rösel’s son-in-law, C.F.C. Kleeman, who added considerable supplementary material. It is also said that the plates in this edition were personally hand-coloured by Kleeman and his wife.Most of the works is devoted to butterUies, but it does not limit itself to insects: the third and fourth volumes als treat lobsters, scorpions, polyps and spiders. Many of the tissue guards with Latin names added in manu-script, in a 19th-century hand. Lacks 2 half-titles, 3 part-titles and a “Voorrede”, otherwise in good condition. An encyclopedic guide to the contemporary political organisa-tion of the world, much like a modern world almanac, it lists all heads of state, with their coats-of-arms, genealogy, estates, titles, religion, academies, money, etc., with bibliographical references and an extensive general bibliography.Nearly all plates and other illustrations in the present copy are richly and very beautifully coloured by hand. Hand-coloured copies of the present work are rare and much sought after.In very good condition. 5e bindings are cracked at the hinges and show a few small chips and bumped corners, but are otherwise good.

Beautiful print-series of elaborately decorated monumental columns designed as garden ornaments by Simon Schynvoet (1652-1727), a Dutch garden architect and art collector, many with coats of arms, portraits, historical or allegorical 'gures, views, etc. Many are anonymous and probably intended as general models, but 10 (including the title-plate and dedication-plate that serve as prints 1 and 2, were designed to commem-orate speci'c events or people. Most of these are dated: 1689 (the Prince of Orange when crowned King William III of England) and 1697-1704 (including the radical theologian Balthasar Bekker, with a caricature medallion portrait), so the series was probably issued in that year or very soon after. 5e plates were engraved by his son, the draughtman and engraver Jacob Schynvoet (1685-post 1733), and by Jan Goeree (1670-1731), the most sought after engraver and book illustrator at the beginning of the 18th century.With the title-print somewhat foxed, but otherwise in good condition and untrimmed, preserving the deckles. A splendid series of garden art prints.

Complete set of the most important and best illustrated work on Dutch Lepidoptera, with 610 hand-coloured plates

Complete set of one of the 'nest and best-illus-trated works on butterUies and moths ever published, here together with the continuations by Snellen van Vollenhoven and Brants, and the rare supplement by Snellen with unpublished manuscript additions. Work on the publication probably began around 1728 and stopped only two hundred years later, when Brants, the author of the third series, died in 1928, leaving his work un'nished. He published only 10 parts of the 'rst volume of the third series. Altogether the set includes 610 plates and 8 frontis-pieces, all coloured by a contemporary hand. Most plates show a single species of butterUy or moth in Uight and on a plant, along with the larva and pupa, and many add the egg and further 'gures with anatomical details. With library stamp on Uyleaf of ad 1 (1st vol.) and on the 'nal pastedown mentioning the purchase at Asher in 1956. Some occasional foxing and browning in ad 1, 2 and 5, otherwise good; ad 3 untrimmed; Bindings and wrappers all somewhat rubbed, but otherwise in good condition and all still 'rm. A celebrated and beautifully illustrated lepidopterological classic.

First and only edition of a neoclassical epic poem in rhymed Dutch verse about Claudius Civilis (also known as Julius Civilis), leader of the 69/70 AD Batavian rebellion against the authority of classical Rome. What little is known of the real events comes from Tacitus’s Historiae, but in the Dutch Republic the story was revived as a heroic story of the ancient Dutch bravely standing up against the unfair authority of the powerful Roman Empire. 5e story remained in vogue throughout the 18th-century and the Dutch poet Frans van Steenwijk (1705-1788) gave it its most extensive treatment in the present work.5e present copy is of special interest for its beautiful engraved frontispiece by Reinier Vinkeles (1741-1816). It appears in this copy both uncoloured, so that one can see every detail of the engraving, and luxuriously hand-coloured and highlighted with gold.With bookplate. In very good condition and with very generous margins. With the top of the spine slightly damaged, the front hinge cracked and a few scu( marks, but the binding remains generally good.

An extremely rare German translation of Stoupe’s La religion des Hollandois, a series of six letters written from 4 to 19 May 1673, criticizing the Dutch tolerance of religious extremists in general and of Spinoza in particular, 'rst published in 1673. It was “the 'rst French book to discuss Spinoza” (Bamberger). In the third letter Stouppe discusses Spinoza and his Tractatus theologico-politicus. Spinoza, as Stouppe argued, aimed to destroy all religions, “insonderheit die Judische und Christliche”, and to introduce in their place “eine Ketzerey, ein freyes leben und die freyheit von allen Religionen” (p. 44).Trimmed, shaving the quire signature and catchword on 1 page, last leaves with small marginal wormholes. Binding chafed and spine damaged at the head, traces of removed shelf-mark label, otherwise in good condition.

Rare Batavia-imprint, of one of the 'rst works of modern poetry in the Western idiom printed in Asia. Printed in a limited edition, for friends of the author only. On the last page a printed dedication with the name of the particular friend to be 'lled in by hand.5e author, a physician, arrived at Batavia in 1755, where he became sub surgeon, and later chief surgeon of the Batavia wharf. He belonged to the educated and dedicated voc o}cials, and had already published some other poetical works in 1770 and in 1774, and selected fables in 1773. Fine copy.

Second edition of a popular history of the Low Countries by Marcus van Vaernewijck (1518-1569), a poet and historian descended from an old noble family from Ghent, and a member of the chamber of rhetoric “Maria ‘t Eeren”. He was twice elected alderman of the city of Ghent. His present book covers the history of the Low Countries in antiquity and the Middle Ages in a lively style, including both real and imaginary people and exploits. It reports events to 1506. Of special importance is the part on Ghent, its monuments and political organisation, the author being par-ticularly well informed on this subject.Ulco Poost’s copy, with his bookplate on the paste-down, and with an earlier library stamp on a free endleaf. Slightly browned throughout and with small holes in about 5 leaves, but otherwise in good condition, with only a minor stain in the foot margin of 4 leaves. Binding somewhat dirty and with a couple small scu(s on the back board, but still good. A popular history of the Low Countries with woodcut illustrations.

Beautifully illustrated study on beetles by Johann Eusebius Voet (1706-1778). Johann’s father, Carel Borchart Voet (1671-1744 or 1745), who was employed as court painter by the Earl of Portland, had made a series of drawings of insects for King William. Johann followed in his father’s footsteps and, in addition to his activities as a medical doctor and his numerous works on new versions of rhymed psalms, worked on the present systematic catalogue of beetles. Voet gives a general introduc-tion followed by a description of the depicted species. In each volume, the text is given 'rst in Latin, then in French and 'nally in Dutch, each with its own pagination and signature series.With the bookplate of “Le C[om]te Ferdinand du Chastel” on inside front covers, some slight, occasional browning in margins, pl. 41 in volume I double. Good copy with beautiful, coloured engravings.

Rare popular medical handbook with one of the earliest Dutch cookery books

Rare third Dutch edition, including the second edition of one of the earliest Dutch cookery books, of a popular book on medicine by Christoph Wirsung (ca. 1505-1571), covering all parts of the human body and all possible illnesses and ailments that can a(ect that particular part, together with the cures for those illnesses and ailments, mainly by means of herbs. It was translated into Dutch by Carolus Battus, a Flemish refugee who was city physician at Dordrecht from 1588 to 1601. Battus added the cookery book, apparently his own compilation, for the second Dutch edition in 1593. It is the third printed Dutch-language cookery book known and the 'rst published in what is now the Netherlands.With bookplate and bookbinder’s ticket. With the title-page somewhat worn, some minor water stains in the preliminaries, and some repairs to the folds of the 'rst and last few leaves (not a(ecting the text), but otherwise in very good condition, with only an occasional minor marginal defect. Important medical work, including the second edition of one of the 'rst Dutch cookery books.
