Technical Preparations/R e q u i r e m e n t s f o r B o o k Prescription Shops: Starting Pace for Bibliotherapy Sessions in Philippine Libraries was PAARL’s theme for its sponsored forum for the month of June (June 18), held in cooperation with the Superbranch of the National Bookstore at Araneta Center, Cubao, Quezon City, with Ms. Zarah C. Gagatiga as lecturer. The lecture started with a storytelling session bringing the participants back to the feeling of being little children again as they listened to the story and reflected on the lessons learned from the story told. It then went on to give practical tips on how to set up book prescription shops suitable to different levels of clients as well as developing a comprehensive collection of books/materials to support a book prescription service.

principles. About 60 copies of the 300-peso book entitled Katha ng Munting Kaisipan (2007) by Crisanta N. Cardeno-Reyes were given away to forum participants.

The 2010 PAARL Standards f o r A c a d e m i c Libraries drafted by Ms. Fe Angela M. Verzosa, to supersede the 2000 version, were presented and deliberated during the Forum on Bibliotheraphy held on June 18 at the National Bookstore, Araneta Center in Cubao, Quezon City. Significant changes from the 2000 version which noticeably departs from the prescriptive and quantitative inputs of other standards and avoids inputs that are already prescribed by other standards were highlighted during the presentations. It was also reiterated by Ms. Versoza, who presented the changes herself, that the PAARL standards are not intended to replace any other standard, whether local or foreign. Rather, they were “formulated to augment, supplement, and enhance any and all other standards for academic libraries in the Philippines.” Likewise, she

on Investment (ROI) strategy. The participants were in for more on day two, as four lecture-sessions glued them further onto their seats. Mr. Fernan Dizon, Ateneo de Manila-Rizal Library’s Reference Librarian, jumpstarted the day with a discussion on Libraries’ New-fangled Virtual Networking Roles, taking a closer look at virtual networking in libraries and introducing new found ways in offering value-added service to clientele. Moreover, Mr. Dizon familiarized the participants to various online applications that library professionals of today may make use of to the library’s advantage. The Reference Librarian of UP Diliman University Library, Ms. Marian Ramos, on the other hand, handled two consecutive
sessions. The first on Technological Advances in Reference Work; and the second on Circulation Work for Principled, Adaptive & Direct Library Readers. The first session focused more on how information services have transcended the boundaries of the physical walls of the library through various technological applications specifically those that are available to enhance reference service while the second was a comprehensive lecture on the functions of access services/circulation department, the new roles of circulation librarians, and best practices in circulation work. Similarly, UP Diliman University Library’s Special Collections Librarian, Ms. Eimee Rhea Lagrama, spoke about Preservation & Access: Achieving
Best of Both Worlds, where she presented to the participants the new face of preservation, i.e., traditional meeting the digital. She demonstrated the preservation of vital and archival materials employing traditional as well as digital means. The participants were enlightened as to how they should collect, preserve and foster access to documents and artworks. Not only did the participants brought home an army of new learning, but also enjoyed the majesty of nature that is Bohol. Colleagues will definitely look forward to what PAARL has in store for everyone for its summer conference next year.
