No. 14 2nd September, 2021
From the Principal—Mr Jamie Feeney
On Monday, September 13th, we will be holding
our Parent-Teacher interviews from 3:15—
7:00pm. You will receive an email with booking
instructions. While you can make appointments at
any point during the year to see your child’s
teacher, I’d encourage everyone to take up this
opportunity to meet with the teachers to discuss how your
children are progressing in their learning. I would like to thank
the parents who engaged in our consultation around report cards,
there where some really valuable insights about parent-teacher
interviews. We’ve explored some of the ideas, such as using
telephone or digital technologies to facilitate them, but at this
stage our technology wouldn’t be reliable enough to support such
a wide-spread usage. We’ll keep exploring, though!
We will be finalising our consultation on changing our report card
format at the end of next week. We are looking at streamlining
our reporting to parents. So far, 75% of respondents prefer the
new, streamlined style. If you haven’t yet had your say and would
like to, please complete the survey, using the link below. There’s
one vote per person, only votes with email addresses matching
our parent contact information can be counted. The survey and
examples of what the reports would look like can be accessed at
https://tinyurl.com/ve2c6vap. The survey will close on Friday,
September 10th, and our decision regarding changing the report
format will be communicated in our next newsletter.
Speaking of reports, attendance and punctuality are two of the
elements which have really big impacts on children’s learning.
Wherever possible, please avoid making appointments for
children during school hours. Being even 10 minutes late for a
lesson often means that children have missed the initial
instructions, and therefore have trouble with the rest of the
lesson, which can really make a big difference. Sometimes it is
unavoidable, so if your child is coming in late to school for any
reason, please make sure you sign your child in to school through
the office. Otherwise, you child is recorded as being absent for
the day, and our absence processes are triggered.
Definitely one thing you won’t want to be absent for is our Casino
Night organised by the P&C for Saturday, September 11. It’s an
adults-only event, so come along and enjoy a child-free evening
out!
Regards,
Jamie Feeney

Student Code of Conduct
Rule of the Week
Please reinforce these rules with your children.
Teacher Aides in our school We have some 14 Teacher Aides, who provide a valuable service in our school. They contribute to the provision of a quality educational service by providing high level support for teaching and learning. Teacher Aides in our school have specialised knowledge and demonstrate initiative in their work around the school. We are very fortunate to have a group of highly skilled teacher aides in our school. This week is Teacher Aide Appreciation Week and tomorrow we will be acknowledging their contribution with a morning tea.
Visit by Registered Nurse for Free Prep Vision Screening Good vision is important for a child’s educational, physical and social development. Vision screening checks for common eye conditions that may impact your child’s ability to see and therefore impact their learning and development. A Registered Nurse will be visiting our school on/between 2 and 3 November to conduct vision screening for children in their prep year. Your child does not need a Medicare card in order to participate in screening. If you wish to have your prep child participate in this free vision screening program, please complete a consent form online by 17 September. You will be emailed the link this week. Parents do not need to be present for screening, however if you would like to be, please contact the school to arrange this. If your child’s vision is screened, you will be advised of the results in writing. If a vision concern is found, you will receive a phone call from the nurse to discuss referral to an eye health professional for further assessment. If a vision concern is identified and your child requires glasses, eligible health care card holders may be assisted with free basic glasses through the Spectacle Supply Scheme. Participation in vision screening is not compulsory. If you do not wish for your child to participate in screening, please complete the consent form and indicate that you wish to decline screening. If you have any questions, please contact the Primary School Nurse Health Readiness Program on 1800 687 372.
Young Engineers Don’t forget to sign your children up for our Young Engineers Program starting Tuesday afternoons after school in Term 4. We're offering both the Brick Challenge (Yr 1-2) and Robo Bricks (Yr 3-6). The sessions cost $180 for the term – check the advertisement in this newsletter for the link to book. BE A LEARNER (CLASSROOM)

• I listen carefully and follow all instructions to make the most of my learning time.
Sporting News-
Cricket
MDSS Inter-school Cricket, played at Harrup Park on Wednesday afternoons has continued. Northview teams are doing well. We are learning new skills and meeting new friends. Our senior boys’ team have been undefeated until yesterday, they went down to Mackay West. Our grade 3/4 boys have been had some great competition also. Our team played a close game against North Mackay Primary, going down by a small margin. Games continue next week, with the grand final and season wrap up occurring in week 10.
Congratulations to Jacob Whitby on his selection into the MDSS boys Cricket team. Jacob will represent Mackay in the Capricornia Cricket trials this Sunday and Monday at Harrup Park. Good Luck, Jacob.
Prep -2 Swimming
Swimming lessons have commenced for our Prep to Year 2 students. All students are making the most of the learning experience. Students are not just focussing on stroke learning or correction, they are also focussing on survival skills. Learning how to save themselves in an emergency and how to assist someone else to safety. Please ensure your little learners have the equipment they require for success and a stress-free experience. Children require swimming togs, towel, thongs/slides, goggles (if desired) and a swim cap is preferred.
Does your child get 60 minutes of physical activity every day?
Being physically active is good for kids’ health, as well as being a great way for them to make friends and to develop physical and social skills. Children’s daily physical activity does not have to be done all in one go. The 60 minutes can be accumulated throughout the day. Remember, even if your child doesn’t play sport, there are lots of activities they can do. Being active in a variety of ways will help children get all the benefits. If your child is not doing 60 minutes of physical activity every day, they will benefit from gradually increasing their activity to reach this amount. So…10 minutes before school,20 minutes walking or riding to and from school and 30 minutes of active play after school = 60 minutes. How about walking, riding, skateboarding or scooting safely to school or other places… ...or washing the car, walking the dog, or helping to dig in the garden? From-Australia's Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviour Guidelines for Children (5 - 12 years). More ideas to come before the holidays.
