The Rex Hotel, located on Toronto's Queen St., has been something of a home over the last few years for True North recor- ding artist Johnny MacLeod. The singer/guitarist, best known for fronting Johnny and the G -Rays during the Toronto punk/new music explosion of 1976-77, owns a rehearsal hall across the street from the Rex - space utilized by artists such as Kim Mit- chell, Sherry Kean, Boys Brigade, and Parachute Club. It is here where MacLeod has rehearsed his Young Pioneers band, as well as material for his debut True North LP, Dynamite In The Stove. The LP was produc- ed by Jon Goldsmith and Kerry Crawford, with MacLeod penning all of the LP's tracks. The Price Is Rising, supported by a Don Shebib-produced video, has been taken as the first single. Recorded at Toronto's Manta Sound, Dynamite In The Stove qualifies as 4 parts Cancon. The LP contains the first single, as well as Easter Monday, True Lives Of The Young Pioneers, How Sweet Was The Taste, Dynamite In The Stove, I Found Your Diary, One Million Years, Now I Rub My Tender Bruise, The Ring Was Flawed, and Down In The Marsh. RPM spoke recently with MacLeod at the offices of his management firm located in downtown Toronto. How did the connection with the record's producers come about? "I wasn't too familiar with their work other than the Cockburn records," MacLeod answers, "but I needed somebody to tighten up the arrangements and pull things out of the songs. They were very good for that. It was good in the studio - we tried to record as much as possible live off the floor. Overall, the True North situation has been a very positive thing . . they've given me the necessary support and put me in touch with the right kind of people." How have you spent the last few years? "We did one record as the G -Rays that didn't do too well," MacLeod remembers, "and then I had some things to sort out . . . unfortunately, the financial aftermath of the record was devastating. I lived on not too much money and spent a lot of time in the rehearsal hall." At press time, The Young Pioneers had been firmed as support for guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan's 4 dates. "I think that his audience may appreciate what we're trying to do," MacLeod muses. "I'm looking forward to meeting him; he's got a pretty good feel for the blues. I want the feel of our songs, rather than the technical presentation, to pull me through." The Young Pioneers consist of Shane Adams (bass), Taras Chornowol (violin, background vocals), Michael Lengyell (drums), Lee Whalen (background vocals), and John Findlay (keyboards). On a recent Saturday night at the Rex, MacLeod put it on the line -a driven figure clad in black singing his heart out. The set opened with The Price Is Rising, an ideal showcase for the band's distinctive ensemble style and Lee Whalen's powerful harmonies. By the end of the evening's 2 sets, MacLeod had ripped through, among others, The Ring Was Flawed, One Million Years, Dynamite In The Stove, Down In The Marsh, and I Found Your Diary - the latter replete with MacLeod's chiming guitar and earnest vocal. By the end of the first set, the room had filled to capacity, with patrons having trouble getting in the door, let alone to a place where they could stand. The high point of the se- cond set was another equally devastating ver- sion of The Price Is Rising. By the end of the encore, MacLeod was glistening with perspiration, probably tired, but no doubt triumphant in bringing his music to the crowd. The end of another night at the Rex. -KCW

Retail theft up due to popularity of cRepresentatives of some of the country's big-gest retail record and tape outlets believe thattheft at the retail level was up during 1984because of the growing popularity of cassettetapes which are still easier to steal than LPs.

"We're selling a hell of a lot of cassettes,"said Paul Herzog, Distribution Manager forRecords On Wheels. "Cassettes are outsellingLPs. Record sales are down, therefore recordtheft is definitely down."

Herzog stressed that special cassettepackaging has definitely helped prevent morecassette theft, but even so, he estimates thatretail theft is up anywhere from 10 to 20 per-cent during 1984.

"We're more aware of the problem thanbefore," he said. "The answer to the pro-blem is not more staff, but keeping thembehind counters and utilizing the long boxes. They should be marketed where they're veryvisable to the staff. Using big cassette bins isvery foolish."

Herzog says the majority of those stealing, range in age from 11 to 18. He also believesthat 60 to 70 percent of those are not caught. He noted that it is in winter when theft is atits worst when people can take advantage oflong overcoats.

"If someone's going to rip somebody off, they're going to make sure it's foolproof," headded.

"The insert cards in the cassettes make it

more attractive to the consumer, resulting in improved sales. As for other labels going with

chrome product, A&M went in promptly - and some of their artists endorsed it".

Alex Fedorow, National Operations Manager for A&M Records, cites the wider dynamic range offered by the chromium dioxide tape. "The extra cost is worth it," Fedorow asserts, "because the chrome tape gives us a

wider dynamic range in the upper frequen- cies. Also, we reduce the chance of con-

sumers buying blank tapes and recording LPs - we're giving them a pre-recorded cassette superior in quality to anything they might

record on their own. At present, all new A&M product is released in the chrome for- mat, and we're currently working to get all our back catalogue converted. Even at plant

level there's an advantage - the chromium dioxide tape is apparently easier to wind than

the ferric oxide product." CBS' Robertson concludes: "From the

perspective of quality, appearance, and reputation, I would think that a company

would go with it . . .

but they do have to con- sider also the few cents per unit more that it's

going to cost them." Bob Stone, Managing Director of World

Records, is "flabbergasted" that more major labels aren't going with the chromium diox-

David Brown, Franchizer Representative for the Sam the Record Man chain, estimated

only a 1 to 2 percent increase in retail theft at most during 1984. "I wouldn't say that theft grew greatly,'?

he said. "With the addition of cassette sales,

theft would only increase accordingly. With cassettes coming up in popularity, there's

more out on the sales floor than before." He explained that the merchandizing of

cassettes has made them more accessible, therefore leading to an increase in theft.

"The most popular things stolen are the heavy metal cassettes," said Brown. "That's what I've been getting most of the feedback

on. It's mostly males and they travel in small packs. One will sometimes work as a decoy."

Brown says their stores have gone to the new cassette boxes for exposure in order to

increase sales, but they also act as a deterrent to theft. Regardless, he said it is still not un-

common at the end of the day to find bags empty or less tapes in the bins.

However, Jerry Wipf, General Manager of Music World, reports their figures show theft

had decreased in their outlets, but he at- tributed this to their preventative measures. "We had a larger shrinkage problem in the past," he said. "It's a matter of proper floor

coverage. Where we have run tests, we put displays in high -traffic areas and found theft

was down. It's harder to steal there. We mer- chandize the top tapes at the front of the

store where they're easily watched." Wipf says that in all cases when a person is caught stealing, the police are called and charges laid. In addition, their staff go to

court as witnesses. "Those stealing are of a very young

demographic, usually from 9 to 15. There's a whole underground community in the malls,

but if they're aware of what we will do, they (thieves) will stay away from your store."

Amadeus Soundtrack scores a Canadian first

For the first time, a double -album of classical repertoire has been certified platinum (sales

-if 100,000 or more) in Canada. Amadeus, the soundtrack to the film of

the same name, is one of only 4 classical recordings to have charted on U.S. trade

charts. The LP is creeping toward the Top 30 on the RPM 100.

Sales of the record have been boosted by the announcement of the film's 11 Acade- my Award nominations - where it took 8

Oscars. As well, Canadian Paul LeBlanc won the Best Makeup designation for his work on the film. The film also captured 4

Golden Globes and 4 Los Angeles Critics' Awards. Amadeus recently opened in Quebec - in a French version

- and in numer- ous secondary markets.

The Canadian platinum designation is the first gold or platinum award for the sound-

track anywhere in the world.

CKEY to FACTOR sponsor list

Toronto's CKEY has signed an agreement to support FACTOR - the Foundation to

Assist Canadian Talent on Records. "As Adult Contemporary broadcasters, we have

keenly felt the shortage of suitable Canadian popular music aimed towards an adult au- dience," says Michael Mangialardo, Vice

- President and General Manager of CKEY.

"FACTOR was founded to assist the financing of a variety of Canadian recording projects, and we are delighted that the deci-

sion has been made to earmark a significant proportion of its income to help artists in the

Adult Contemporary music field."

Cute promotions pay off!!!I mentioned a few weeks ago that recordcompany promotions had all but driedup. At one time there wasn't a day wentby when a cute promo package wouldbrighten up the office. It appeared thatthe creative promo minds had moved tothe video side of the business, particularlyto MCA Home Video - perhaps why theyhave scored so well. Most recent promopackages from MCA were a fitness (skipping)rope, which brought attention to AlfredHitchcok's Rope film. This week, a scarylooking human skull . . . . that glows in thedark . . . . gave an extra visual boost to themovie Terror In The Aisles. Someone, whowanted to remain anonymous, recently sentme a turkey, but there wasn't any promomaterial in the package. Maybe the messagewas in the gift itself.

Speaking of promotions '!No sooner had I got over the shock of theabove skull, when in the door came a uniquepromotion from WEA., which also glowedin the dark. WEA are pushing hard on theHoneymoon Suite's new single, Stay In TheLight, and the promo item is a desk lampwith the message Honeymoon Suite - StayIn The Light - WEA Music Of Canada, suit-ably inscribed in flourescent tape.

" . . the prophets of doom, the messengers ofmediocrity, will be overwhelmed by the newgeneration of cornpetenl, creative, confidentartisans and by all those of preceding generationswho have already demonstrated their freshness ofmind, their talent and their capacity for inspiredleadership." - Pierre Juneau

RCA had one as well!!!Well, I guess I complained too soon aboutthe lack of cute promotions. RCA had anice promotion to kick off the Autographrelease of Sign In Please. The LP was ac-companied by a note pad, bearing the nameof the group and the title of their LP, andthe latest in writing instruments - a Paper -mate, state-of-the-art, if that's the properdescription, pencil. Nice idea.

Spruced up and nowhere to go??It looks like the industry is just looking fora real nice evening out, and the Big CountryAwards Banquet seems to be what they'relooking for. The response from the industryin general is overwhelming. The eveningpromises to be a really elegant and pres-tigious event to get together with others inthe industry - and I'm talking about a lot ofnon -country industry people. What a com-pliment it is that this event is already beingcompared to some of the events of the pastthat have been put together by Stan Klees. To quote one of the plaudits, "It will bewell done, and an evening to remember".Dress for that evening is just "dress beau-tifully" and the theme is "have a goodtime".

Beer slinger Gabereau 9

Vicki Gabereau, and by this time I don'thave to explain what she does, has a habitof dropping her bobby pins. There she was, interviewing Etta James, who was playingToronto's Brunswick House, and in clearand CBC stereo, says Vicki, "I used tosling beer in the Brunswick House a fewyears ago". I wonder if that was, beforeshe drove cab in Toronto? What a per-sonality (EC: What a background ...!)

" . . . clout and power ..." Gosh!!!"A Certain Group of Broadcasters" droppedme a line to say "just how much clout andpower your newsletter holds in the busi-ness". These are things that too often wetake for granted. One other point that wasmade by this group was that RPM gets intothe hands of the industry so fast that broad-casters get "a lot of ink on his or her handsevery week." We are working on trying toget RPM's ink to dry before it gets to thesebroadcasters. Thanks for the compliment.

The winning entrants are: Ian Tyson (TheSierry Petes/CBS Records in NorthAmerica), Paul Piche (Cochez Oui CochezNon/Les Disques Audiogram, dist. by Trans-Canada), George McCrae (I Need You SoBad/Gold Mountain Records, dist. in NorthAmerica by A&M Records), Hugh Marsh(Versace/Duke Street Records, dist. by WEARecords), Doug & The Slugs (LoveShines/Ritdong Records, dist. by A&M),Robert Charlebois (L'Orage Electrique/LesDisques Solution), Belinda Metz (WhatAbout Me/Attic Records, dist. in Canada byA&M), and Ken Ramm (Sail Away/CoachHouse Records, dist. by Rhythms).

Al Elias . . . on the loose???I was shocked to hear that Al Elias andPolyGram had parted company. You don'tfind too many people in the business thestature of Al Elias - he was a gentleman'sgentleman . . and the only real contactI had with PolyGram. Now, if ever anyonein the business deserved a roast/tribute, it'sAl Elias.

It wasn't very hot .. . !!What's hot . . . is NOT!!! Gone and it won'tbe missed. Now there is a new problem thatreally vexes me. I always look at the CHUMsingle and album charts in Friday's daily. In the past, I have put a great deal of credi-bility in this weekly feature in the dailies, and it was sad to see that this legendarychart is being contradicted each week. Ittruly makes me sad. I guess I'm just a tra-ditionalist. (EC: You like to find fault, justlike your friends, the writers in the dailies.)

The Copa is hot, hot . .. hot!!!I've been to some record promotions at theCopa in the past and I have to tell you theywere the pits. If there isn't a really interest-ing promotion tied in with the evening, theCopa comes off as a cold, barn of a room. However, the Quality reception for theopening of the Last Dragon film, turnedmy head around. The buffet was exception-al . . and it's all part of the admission. TheQuality folks were quick to make everyoneat home . . . and that's what really madethe evening.

I'm really lashing out!!!I'm damned mad ... and I'm really going tolash out at the number of people in thisindustry who have a blatant conflict ofinterest - not illegal, but bloody immoral. What's worse is the fact that the industrycondones it. The same industry that criesthat it has "no credibility". These peopleshould pick a job and do it well, ratherthan crying because they are so spread outwith their conflicts of interest that theydon't do anything well. Couldn't I make alot of bucks if I promoted concerts, managedgroups, did PR . . . and billed myself as aconsultant. It's nice to be pure!!! (EC: Youtell 'em Snow White!!)

ERIC CLAPTON - PopBehind The SunDuck/Warner Bros - 92-51661-PAlthough many thought legendary bluesguitarist Eric Clapton had fallen asleep afterLayla, it was more likely a debilitatingdrug habit and weak tunes that renderedmuch of his material as exciting as a subur-ban macrame class. Vancouver's Palmer pushes ShirleyWith the release of Hugs and Kisses, Shirleyand Pushin' 30, Michael Palmer returns tothe record wars. This single is the Vancouversinger/songwriter's first recording in fouryears; the last being Holly, a Christmas tune.Previous releases in-clude Lovin' Talk,The One You Got andCircle; all of whichreceived airplay acrossCanada. Palmer hasappeared on radio andtelevision as well as inconcert with Dan Hill,Jesse Winchester, BozScaggs, ShawnPhilips, and RayMaterick. He also hasa movie theme to his credit.

Palmer now.leads the Cuervo Brothers, apopular Vancouver band with a distinctivecountry/pop sound and a reputation forhumour in their live performances. Theband's sound is described as "Aerobic Coun-try" with major musical influences fromPeter, Paul and Mary, Devo, Mel Torme, and Twisted Sister. The live act features suchhighlights as the Willie Nelson and WayneNewton parody featuring their famous -albeit fictional - Las Vegas revue: A Saluteto the Cuervo Brothers - The Show WeWish They Hadn't Given.

Palmer, both with and without the CuervoBrothers, is a mainstay of the Vancouverentertainment scene playing throughout theGreater Vancouver area with regular foraysinto the interior of the province, across to

Michael Palmer

Vancouver Island, and up to the ski resorts ofWhistler and Blackcomb.

This single is a good sampler of Palmer'sapproach to songwriting. Hugs And Kisses,Shirley is a tongue-in-cheek reminder of whathigh school love was really like. Pushin' 30 isa more reflective piece on the bittersweetnessof growing older minus the painful moaningthat often accompanies these thoughts.

This release, on the Rolltop label, wasrecorded at Vancouver's Blue Wave Studioswith Brian Campbell (engineer for thePowder Blues band) at the controls. CraigWood produced both sides, and is wellknown as the composer of Peter And Lou, ahit for Valdy. Accompanying Palmer was anassemblage of Vancouver's top musicians in-cluding members of the notorious CuervoBrothers. "Sittin' in" were Linda Hunt, DanSmith, Craig Wood, Harry Parsons, ChrisNordquist, John Wade, and Kerry Galloway.

Palmer has released this single to preparethe ground for his debut album, Bowling ForDucks. Studio work on this album will beginin April of this year with release anticipatedfor mid -summer. Included on the upcomingalbum will be Palmer's definitive account ofwinter in Canada (Bakin' In Jamaica), a sor-tie into the world of new wave (Wild In TheStreets), and a country tune that will makeWaylon Jennings roll over in his grave (werealize he's not dead but this song will pro-bably kill him!).

Michael Palmer and the Cuervo Brothersare managed by Harry Parsons, RolltopRecords, North Vancouver, B.C.

Q: Why are the Big Country Awardsbeing resurrected?A: We feel the timing is right and theCanadian country music industry needsthis extra boost. The Big CountryAwards were the original awards and wehave been asked repeatedly to bringthem back.Q: How are the winners picked?A: Nominations are based on chartaction in RPM over the previous year. The ballots are sent out to all the sub-scribers to RPM. This gives us a verygood mix of voters and makes it impos-sible for blocks and pockets to controlthe voting. The winners will be knownwhen the envelopes are opened at theactual awards banquet.

Will the awards feature musicalperformances?A: No. The dinner will be followed bythe awards ceremony which will consistof presenters opening the envelopesand announcing the winners.Q: How many categories are there?A: Exactly one dozen (12). The BigCountry Awards are a very covettedaward. They aren't given out in largenumbers. They have a great deal ofprestige. They are part of a very pres-tigious event. That price is all-inclusive. Once you pay the $100. youhave paid it all. There are no othercharges for parking, coat check, drinks,or dinner wine. There are no extracharges. Everything is included. It will bea very posh affair in a very posh setting.Something designed to bring prestige tothe Canadian country music industry. Itis an event for the industry. Tables of 8, 9 or 10 can be re-served ahead if you get a group to-gether and arrange that they all pay priorto 4:00 p.m. Apr. 26th. - or mail allthe payments in the same envelope. We must have all the names in advance.Q: Will you be able to pay at the door?A: Definitely not! For an event of thiskind, advance planning makes it impos-sible to arrange any additional meals. You must be confirmed at least two daysbefore the banquet. After 4:00 p.m. onFriday April 26 - if you don't have aconfirmation number, you can forgetthe banquet until next year.
