The band consists of Mike Levine (bass), Gil Moore (drums), and Rik Emmett (guitar). Triumph have garnered a host of designations for their LPs in a career that spans nearly a decade. The Thunder Seven LP has surpassed gold (50,000 units or more in sales) status in Canada. Triumph were born in the summer of 1975 in Toronto, when Moore and Levine asked Rik Emmett to join them in a band. Veterans of numerous late-'60s/early-'70s outfits, the duo were looking to put together a band that would last. The youthful Emmett fit the bill - canny, articulate, and possessor of a uni- que flash metal - cum -ballad guitar style. From the outset, the band's philosophy was simple: write direct, hard-hitting rock and roll interspersed with anthemic ballads; con- trol as much of the business end of things as possible; and stay away from the traditional club circuit that drives so many new bands in- to the ground. Their first recorded effort - 1976's Triumph - was, and remains, one of the finest LPs ever released in this country by any band, new or old. Shamelessly derivative in places, Triumph nonetheless managed' to pay a lot of homage while forging their own rock and roll imprimatur. The Triumph LP was followed by Rock 'N' Roll Machine - released as their debut U.S. LP. The U.S. release was a compilation of tracks from the Canadian debut and the Canadian Machine release. 1978 witnessed the band's first Cana- dian tour as well as their first U.S. tour later in the year. Since then, they have played to over 2 million people in North America and Europe, and attained six gold and three platinum records for their LP releases to date. Over 250,000 people were present for their appearance at the 1983 US Festival in California. For such a roadworthy band, the statistics connected with the current North American undertaking should come as no surprise. The band's crew numbers 25, loading 50 tons of equipment in and out of gigs continent -wide; this includes more than 1,200 lamps in custom trusses, 140 '747' lan- ding lights, and sound gear capable of putting out 60,000 watts. Facts on the band are equally impressive. Rik Emmett is acknowledged by his peers to be one of the top rock and roll guitarists in the world. He routinely places in Guitar Player magazine's Top 10. In 1979, Performing Magazine cited Triumph as Innovators Of The Year. In- novative or not, the MCA bio quotes Emmett as saying that Triumph are ". . . simply a rock band; Triumph is not strictly heavy rock or precious metal or any other specific or weird combination." The band's MCA debut LP, in contrast to the pomp and excess of their concert trappings, sports a leaner sound than previous records. Produced by Triumph with legendary engineer/producer Eddie Kramer (Jimi Hendrix), the LP was recorded at Metalworks - the band's 48 -track com- puterized MCI studio located in Mississauga, Ont. The LP's title is taken from a James Joyce book. The tracks are Spellbound, Rock Out Roll On, Midsummer's Daydream, Time Goes By, Time Canon, Killing Time, Little Boy Blues, Stranger In A Strange Land, Follow Your Heart, and Cool Down. An indication of corporate confidence in Triumph's drawing power was evidenced in their selection to appear in a national TV campaign for Pepsi -Cola, directed at the lucrative teenage market. As Rik Emmett in- dicated in a recent story he wrote for a Toronto daily, many fans seem to look to the band for energy and inspiration. "With all of their youth, their spirit, their power, and their inspiration," he wrote, "it is THEY who are driving the band. I look out at their shining faces, their smiles, and see the en- thusiasm that burns in their eyes. We are fulfilling each other's expectations; and now the roles are reversed - I am their instru- ment, and they are the biggest, strongest, and most important creative element of our band. Ready recording act Manteca are currently in production for their 3rd LP. The ensemble's

bio describes their music as a "synthesis of styles - incorporating influences from salsa, jazz, funk, African, and calypso."

Founded in Toronto in 1979 by percus- sionist Matt Zimbel and bassist Henry Heill-

May 1st, with CTL Executive Director Jackie Rae joining the new organization as Ex-

ecutive Consultant and Producer. Earl Rosen will continue as Executive Director, his posi- tion with FACTOR. Said Standard's Shur -

man: "FACTOR/CTL will offer financial and promotional assistance to developing ar-

tists, and because it will have a financial in- terest in the success of its supported artists, it

will have the opportunity to earn a substan- tial return on its investments. These returns, of course, will be funnelled back to enhance the fund and expand its capability for further

talent development."

Five independent acts for '85 U -Knows

Nominations (or "suggestions") in the Best Independent Artist category for the 1985

U -Know Awards are Sandro Carlo Camerin, Direktive 17, Walt Ohama, Ken Ramm, and

Rave Revues. The awards, sponsored by Toronto radio station CFNY-FM, will take

place Apr. 24 at the Toronto Convention Centre. A thumbnail assessment of each ar-

tist follows.

Sandro Carlo Camerin's LP release, Real To Reel, was recorded in Vancouver last

year. Carmerin characterizes his music as "eclectic". "I'm a guitarist," he explains,

"so the record is diverse. I think that we're a fortunate generation being able to grow up listening to music all the way from rock to

jazz." Carnerin became a professional musi- cian in 1977, and has been teaching for 15

years. He will return to the project in August - continuing his writing and forming a band to tour the material. Guitarist Ken Ramm's

12" Coach House release, Ramm; contains two tracks - Spark The Universe and Sail

Away. Ramm, a product of Boston's Berklee College of Music, has studied with Gary Bur-

ton, Pat Metheny, and Mick Goodrick. Ramm will be on release in early May with an

LP featuring Bill Laswell (Mick Jagger) and Neil Peart of Rush. "I think that my inclu- sion on the ballot means a good

acknowledgement of a lot of work and effot," says Ramm.

Direktive 17, based in Toronto, are on release with a self -titled LP on the Macbeth label. Vocalist Andy Maize appreciates the

recognition that inclusion on the U -Know ballot will bring, but laments the fact that ".

. most of what we hear on the radio today is controlled by major companies." The band

consists of Maize (vocals, trumpet), Craig Bradshaw (guitar), Bob Siamro (bass), and

Myron Wasyliw (drums). Walt Ohama has released an LP entitled I Fear What I Might

Hear. He characterizes his music as techno- pop or modern pop. Ohama is based in

Ranier, Alta., 120 miles from Calgary. "I'm free to do what I want here," he 'explains.

"I'm not distracted by trends." Ohama's previous release was a mini -LP, Midnite

News. He is essentially a one-man band, pro- ducing music with synthesizer, sequencers,

vocoders, and digital drums. Ohama is cur- rently writing, and will perform in June at

Toronto's Rivoli. Rave Revues' LP is Voices, released on the World Records label.

Dukes of Stratosphear LP is XTC gone psychedelic

Virgin Records recently issued an album by The Dukes Of Stratosphear entitled 25

O'Clock, a psychedelic album which is really the British Virgin recording band XTC who

went under a different title for the project. Although the label knew the media and

public would sooner or later find out the band was really XTC, they initially wanted to keep it a secret, but in Canada, the album

jacket cover was stickered with the comment, "This is such a psychedelic platter you know

it's pure eXTCy." The sticker became the clue to the giveaway, and news of the band's real identity came out sooner than expected.

Merck Mercuriadis, A&R Director/Product Manager for Virgin Records Canada, ex-

plained that the reason for this marketing strategy was to have the record accepted on

its own terms rather than as an XTC album. Mercuriadis doubts whether the album

signals the start of a psychedelic revival, but stresses there are people interested in this type

of music. "With everyone looking back at the '60s as

such a great period, people are interested in psychedelia," he said. "There are also people

who have never heard such bands as the Elec- tric Prunes, the Yardbirds, Barry & the Re-

mains and others". "These are recent songs, but if this album

had been released in '67, I think people today would see it in terms of the classic

psychedelia. We're hoping the majors (sta- tions) will give it the attention it deserves. I would like to think they would take it on in terms of the songs themselves."

Virgin Canada hoped that with the sticker, there would be some '60s style confusion

started. The LP artwork and liner notes feature the traditional psychedelic graphics of

the 1967/68 period. Virgin has no plans to release a single here although, one track, The

Mole From The Ministry, was released in Bri- tain. There are no plans of Canadian dates as

of yet.

Tears are not enough !

The Tears Are Not Enough single is sellingphenomenally -well - but it could sell muchbetter if potential buyers knew where to getthe record. Radio stations have been quickto lend their support to this record byNorthern Lights, but unfortunately not allrecord stores are stocking the single. Saturn'sLeonard Kennedy has been receiving callsfrom out of town service groups, highschools, and even the Red Cross, indicatinga desire to lend their support to the project, but most were at a loss as to how theycould purchase a copy or who to talk to.Perhaps programmers could refer theirlisteners to Columbia's Toronto address, who then could put them in touch witha supplier. By the way, Saturn have alreadygone through 60,000 of the 7" and 15,000of the 12" singles. The single tops the RPM100 singles chart this week.

Speaking of Heaven !t,Our reporter Kevin Wynne attended a low-key' date by RCA's New Regime last weekat Heaven, and apparently came away veryimpressed. Get ready for THE golf tournament!!Garry Newman called the other day toadvise that the Ontario Music Industry's12th Annual Golf Tournament will be heldJuly 23 - same place as last year - SleepyHollow Golf & Country Club in Stouffville, which is just north of Toronto. What's in a name . . . ??It was a year ago when Mel Shaw came upwith the concept for a History of Cancon

114ii=1;t----111111Let's call a spade a spade . !!!I noted with interest an item in a recentissue of Radio and Records concerning"Paper Adds" by radio stations. A "paperadd" is when a station reports it is playing arecord, when in fact, it is not.

R&R contends this can affect the statis-tics the trades give back to their readers, therefore a record appears stronger than itreally is in reality.

R&R uses 164 reporting stations to com-pile its Country Chart. RPM lists 13 report-ing country stations, think of the influencetheir stats have on this country chart. Thinkof the influence RPM's chart has on othercountry programmers. As they say on HillStreet Blues reruns - "Let's be careful outthere!" So you're not an RPM reportingstation. So you're not involved in "paperadds'. Think about it - those reply cardsyou sent back to the record companies - doyou really play all those records you sayyou do? Are they all rotated equal to othersin the same category?

I hope so, because if you're not beingtruthful, the people who read those cardsare getting a false impression. Then, guesswho they tell? How many times have youheard on the phone - "What, you're notplaying that song - everybody else in thecountry is "on it".

So, let's call a spade a spade - if you'renot playing the record, say so. It may beharder to do, but at least we are being fairto each other and more importantly, we arenot misinforming the record industry.

No jacket required .. . ???If you were wondering what the No JacketRequired title means ... here's the explana-tion from Phil Collins: "It's one of thosefunny things that happens on tour ... whenyou pay vast sums of money for a hotelroom and they still don't consider you suit-able enough to bring in the bar because youdon't wear a jacket. Over the last couple oftours with Robert Plant, we had a couple ofincidents." (EC: There are still some barsin the world, where you can't get in if you'rewearing jeans).

to hang on the wall. Now, here's a talent that's ready to bust out

. . . and Tracy's

not doing so bad either. Whitney will be in the Toronto area mid -April to promo

her new RCA album.

No jacket required .. .

??? If you were wondering what the No Jacket

Required title means . . .

here's the explana- tion from Phil Collins: "It's one of those

funny things that happens on tour . . .

when you pay vast sums of money for a hotel

room and they still don't consider you suit- able enough to bring in the bar because you

don't wear a jacket. Over the last couple of tours with Robert Plant, we had a couple of

incidents." (EC: There are still some bars in the world, where you can't get in if you're

wearing jeans).

We have to be fair !!! When people phone about table arrange- ments for Big Country, we tell them that we

give out the tables according to when we receive the full payment. It's the only fair

way! '
