The class of 2011 are to be congratulated on their achievements. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the 2011 Year 12 teachers for their commitment and work with our students. We wish all of our 2012 Year 12 students all the best in their forthcoming studies.

Belated Farewell Cindy Ridley one of our Christian Pastoral Care Workers has left Blackwood High School to relocate to the country with her husband. Cindy has worked with our students, staff and the community for just over 4 years. During this time she has supported individual students and school events particularly in the performance area. We wish Cindy all the best with her future.

School Buses and School Starting Time Blackwood High School lessons start at 8.40am and have done so for many years. The change for 2012 is that lesson 1 starts at 8.40am and students are expected to be at school and prepared for their first lesson. We have been informed that some of the buses which our students catch have either not turned up or have been late. Please let us know if this is the situation providing us with the bus route number and the issue. We will contact the bus company. Parents/caregivers can also assist us in trying to get these matters resolved by contacting the Transfield Bus switchboard on 8377 6400. The more people who ring and complain about the bus services should result in improvements.

Parent Acquaintance Evenings Over the next few weeks we will be conducting Parent Acquaintance evenings. These events enable parents and caregivers to meet Care Group Teachers, Year Level Leaders, staff who can support your child and members of the Executive Team. The Year 11 and 12 parents met on Wednesday 8 February and the dates of the other events are:

Wednesday 15 February – Year 9 and 10 Wednesday 22 February – Year 8

Governing Council AGM On Tuesday 6 March at 7pm the Annual General Meeting will be held of Blackwood High School’s Governing Council in the Performing Arts Centre. Involvement in the Governing Council provides parents with the opportunity to develop the direction of the school and the work of the Governing Council sub-committees. At the AGM you will hear about the 2011 achievements of the school. We invite you to nominate prior to the meeting or just come along on the night.

Priorities for 2012 In 2012 parents will be invited to attend a forum to have a say in the school’s direction for the next five years. When the details are finalized an invitation will be sent to all parents and caregivers to participate in this important opportunity.

School Uniform It has been very pleasing to see many students appropriately dressed in full school uniform. The school uniform requirements are clearly outlined in the Student Diary on pages 8 to 10. Shoes need to be consistent with diary description – plain black, flat healed sturdy shoes with fully closed top of shoe, closed back or completely black sneakers with black laces. Canvas or slip on shoes, particularly the ballet flats for girls do not provide adequate protection whilst students are at school. School uniform requirements are in place to: Support the safety of students Build a sense of pride and belonging Reduce competitiveness around dress choice The uniform requirements are consistent with many organisations requirements about standard of dress. Uniform costs may be tax deductable as part of education expenses so receipts should be kept to claim them on the 2011-12 tax return.

WORLD CHALLENGE TO BORNEO November and December 2011 saw the culmination of 18 months of planning, fundraising and preparing for Blackwood High School’s second World Challenge Expedition.

Two teams set off on a month long expedition which would see each group, among other things participate in a week long trek, community project and attempt a summit of Mt Kinabalu. Led by Peta & Daniel Maher, Luke Northcote and Dan Smith, the teams flew out together, arriving in Kuching Sarawak, before going in separate directions to experience what the island had to offer. TEAM 1- The appropriately self appointed “Team Awesome” lived up to their name in every sense completing all challenges and overcoming every obstacle with confidence. Several highlights stick out, one of which was summiting Mt Kinabalu. The view and the feeling at dawn after a physically taxing 6 hour walk the day before, an attack of the bed bugs and altitude sickness was amazing. Completing our project at the Sabah Cheshire House, while frustrating, hard, hot and very tough, was inspiring. Working

at a home for physically and mentally disadvantaged people we were required to create a base for a concrete slab to be laid and reinforce a road with rock and gravel. A visit from the minister saw Blackwood High School make page 3 of the Borneo Daily Express and the experience was all capped with an extravagantly catered Christmas party. By far the most unique experience was the jungle trek around the highland town of Bario. Led by 3 expert guides we were led along overgrown jungle trails, slept in hammocks and cooked over camp fires. Our guides treated us to a feast of

wildly caught boar and created bridges over rivers and dining tables from the local trees in the blink of an eye. TEAM 2’s adventure started with the arrival at Kuching airport and with the meeting of our vibrant and enthusiastic leader Polly. The adventures of Team 2 continued from the South to the North of the Island covering huge distances by express boats, buses and plane. It was an amazing experience as our little group turned themselves into a family ready to

take on every challenge presented to us. There were a number of highlights for our group ranging from our Trek in Mulu National Park and our exploration of the huge and vast cave systems that run throughout this jungle area. The climb of the Pinnacles was an extraordinary, physically challenging nine hour adventure. The team hiked up near vertical terrain of 2.4km to get to the top and view the amazingly shaped limestone Pinnacles. Another highlight was working with our 3 community projects, Bukit Harapen, a home for young children with mental and physical disability, Kota Kinabalu’s wetland and mangroves preservation centre, and Green Connection, a facility for rescuing marine animals. Each project enabled our team to get a diverse understanding of the people, culture and

community in the Kota Kinabalu area. Both teams enjoyed a few days of rest and relaxation after an intense three and a half weeks of travelling. Activities included snorkelling in crystal clear waters, shopping, massages, shopping, white water rafting and a little more shopping. It was a pleasure working with such a committed and friendly group of people and we look forward to launching the 2013 trip in mid term 2 2012. Peta Maher & Daniel Smith From the students “Having the opportunity to participate in three different community projects from conservation to helping less fortunate, it was full-on but great fun and very rewarding.” Diana Jennings Team 2 “Being able to trek through the rainforest. This was both challenging and an amazing opportunity to see the wildlife.” Emily Pyke Team 2 "The best part of the trip to Borneo was reaching the summit of Kinabalu!" Madi Duncan Team 1

VET 2012 This year there are some significant changes to our courses at Blackwood High School for Vocational Education & Training – all of which aim to improve learning outcomes for our VET and Apprenticeship students.

This year all VET students are required to complete an agreement form between themselves, any teachers whose subjects are affected by either their VET Course or School Based Apprenticeship and their parents or caregivers. High level organisation is paramount to the success of students completing VET courses and this is one way we believe students can begin to develop and improve their organisation and responsibility. We seek your support in ensuing these are completed and returned by the end of Week 3.

Stage II Workplace Practices is now running off-line via the school’s Moodle website. Our aim here is to provide VET students at Year 12 the flexibility to miss a day per week and still have the time to meet the course requirements for their other subjects. The subject supervisor for this year is Chris Brookes and both he and I can be contacted via the VET Office on 8278 0954. A guest login to the site is available to parents / caregivers.

Should you have any queries regarding your child’s VET Course, Apprenticeship or Traineeship, please feel free to call me immediately via the school on 8278 0900.

Congratulations to our latest School Based Apprentice, Perry Tippett who is now undertaking his Certificate III Carpentry with Andrew Tippett Carpentry. Blackwood High School wishes you all the best for this exciting new adventure. Luke Northcote, VET Leader

HOMESTAY FAMILIES WANTED FOR MORIOKA HIGH SCHOOL VISIT Planning is currently underway for our next Study Tour visit from Morioka HS. Morioka is situated in the area that was affected by the devastating earthquake last year and we are very happy that the school is in a position to send a group of 18 students to us in 2012. Students will only be with us for one week from SATURDAY 25 FEBRUARY to SATURDAY 3 MARCH, 2012 During their stay in Australia, the Japanese students will travel to and from school each day with their hosts. At school they will have a full schedule of activities that will include English lessons, a chance to experience classes such as Aussie Sports, Home Economics and an excursion to Cleland. No special arrangements need to be made to accommodate a visitor from Japan for a short-term visit. A room may be shared for the short visit. A payment of $220 will be made to each host family to defray expenses for the week long stay. We hope you will consider being part of this exciting program. Prospective host families will need to complete an application process to become an accredited DECS homestay family. If you are interested in hosting a student could you please contact me at school via email [email protected] or phone 8278 0900.

SENIOR SCHOOL FOCUS Welcome back to the start of a new year, which brings with it the opportunity to set new goals and continuously improve upon what already has been achieved. Routine, structure and focus are pivotal in being able to successfully meet the challenges associated with full time study. As our Senior Students enter Senior School and commence the SACE, demands placed on them increase significantly. However, the effort and time put in by each student in attaining their SACE is not only a reward in itself but needs to be considered as an investment in their future. I would like to take this opportunity to wish students every success in their studies this year and look forward to working with them and their families in my role as Senior Leader of the Senior School.

Mary Hodson, Senior Leader, Senior School

YEAR 12 NEWS 2012 has begun smoothly for the 135 students enrolled in Year 12. Students have made a good start to the year focussing on their chosen subjects. Already the Formal Committee has met and has begun planning the major social event of Semester 1 on Friday 11 May. Independent Study Agreements have been distributed and students are organising their applications. Once parents and teachers have signed this, students can be granted independent study status where there are no scheduled classes at the beginning and the end of the day. This policy is to support our senior students to further develop their skills of independent learning options and pathways, which are of great importance and value to senior students. We are looking forward to a year of hard work and great success. Susan Lawrie, Year 12 Leader

ELECTROTECHNOLOGY COURSE COMMENCES Twenty Year 11 students have commenced studies toward a Certificate II Electrotechnology qualification through a new Industry Pathways Program (IPP). Using the new facilities and resources of the Blackwood High School Trade Training Centre, the students have selected to study this course as part of the flexible arrangements supported by the new SACE, and some innovative timetabling arrangements that allow them to participate all day on Thursdays in this

unique program. Their teachers, Tom Oliphant and Malcolm Clarke, have undertaken specific industry accredited training programs to enable them to deliver the course. Preparatory courses are also offered at Year 9 and 10, and SACE Stage 2 level studies will be available from 2013 onwards. We look forward to monitoring their progress throughout the year.

MATHEMATICS Welcome to mathematics in 2012. I hope this year will be both rewarding and challenging. The learning of Mathematics is a partnership between student, teacher, and parent/caregiver and I sincerely hope that over the course of 2012 this bond can be strengthened. Communication is a vital link in this relationship so students ask questions when in doubt, and parent/caregivers please talk to your students about their Mathematics and feel very welcome to contact the teacher or me with any concerns you have. Graphics Calculators The use of Graphics Calculator technology in senior school Mathematics courses is embedded in all programs. To be successful students need to be proficient in their use. It is essential that students undertaking a year of Pure Mathematics at SACE Stage 1 and all those considering any Mathematics at SACE Stage 2 purchase their own calculator. The model that Blackwood High School uses is the CASIO 9860G-AU plus. Your friendly mathematics teacher has purchase forms to be returned by 17 February. The school will make a bulk order for these calculators and has negotiated a special price of $195 through Campion Books. Students in other year levels are very welcome to purchase graphics calculators as they will significantly support their learning but it is not compulsory. See your mathematics teacher for a purchase form. The calculators are tax deductible and maintain a strong second-hand price when no longer needed.
