Students attend poetry recitation

Twenty-nine Chenango Forks students in grades 2-7 participated in the

34th Annual Poetry and the Children Day at Binghamton University on May 25, 2011.

This program is a memorial to Robert A. Pawlikowski, an accomplished poet and former BU creative writing instructor, who always encouraged aspiring young writers. Our students, along with more than three hundred others from thirteen area school districts, were treated to an assembly with congratulatory addresses from Don Nieman, dean of Harpur College of Arts and Sciences, and Christine Gelineau, a poet from the English, General Literature and Rhetoric Department. Our students were then given a chance

to recite their original poems to an audience. Each Chenango Forks student performed with eloquence and confi dence. -Karyn Church, MS reading teacher

Art students published

Once again Chenango Forks art students showed how talented they are. This year, six students have their artwork published

in “Celebrating Art,” a book created as part the contest CelebratingArt.com. The students are Stephanie Zdimal, Sarah Maximowicz, Brooke Robertson, Holly Price, Sarah Andrus and Morgan Lindow.

Categories are in grades K-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12 and includes any art that can have a still digital image. The contest was established to reward student artists and to showcase student art. It is designed to encourage students’ artistic talents, increase the learning experience, provide additional recognition for students, give artistic work a larger audience, preserves art in a professionally bound book, help promote school art programs and, create a permanent record of students’ achievements.

9July 2011 Congratulations CF StudentsCongratulations CF StudentsAfter-prom party provides students a fun place to be

On Saturday, May 21, just after midnight, more than 280 Chenango Forks juniors, seniors and their guests, converged on the high school to enjoy After-Prom

Party 2011.

The “Beach Carnival” party was the culmination of months of planning and fundraising by the After-Prom Party Committee, comprised of parent volunteers of the junior and senior students.

The students were treated to delicious refreshments served in the cafeteria, which was decorated with colorful beach buckets, umbrellas, beach balls and photos of the students through the years. An airbrush tattoo artist, inflatable activity areas, cash box, photo area, a variety of games and an entertaining hypnotist show provided ample opportunity for student fun and participation.

During a Chinese Auction giveaway, over 100 prizes were distributed and after the hypnotist show, over $5,000 worth of large prizes in the form of cash and gifts were raffled.

Each year, the APP provides a safe and fun environment for the students to continue their prom experience. In addition,

the APP Committee will once again award two $250 scholarships to graduating seniors who best exhibited efforts to make healthy life choices based on their application submissions.

M a n y t h a n k s t o those who made this year’s party a great success: the tireless committee volunteers, the Chenango Forks administration, staff and teachers, the CF sophomore class, Deb Daniels’ foods classes and our very generous community.

Typically, school districts are happy with two or three Section IV titles in one school year. They would be

elated with four.

This year, Chenango Forks is beyond elated! That is because our district won a whopping SIX sectional titles. Congratulations to this year’s sectional championship teams; wrestling, golf, boys lacrosse, football, girls swimming

and girls soccer. The district is proud of your success!

How low can you go?

Laura French, fi fth-grader, won the annual Kenyon Limbo contest. Laura made it under the Liz Level, named after former Kenyon student Liz Williams, who, in 1999, was

the fi rst student to get the lowest measurement. Th is is Laura’s second year in row as Chenango Forks limbo champ, clearing “Liz Level” again at 9 ½” from the fl oor. Congratulations!

Students do some cleaning

On a Saturday in May, these students weren’t hanging out at home or at the mall, they were doing some cleaning. Th e Chenango Forks Chapter of the National Honor

Society did its fi rst-ever roadside cleanup in cooperation with the statewide Adopt-A-Highway program.

As you drive state Route 12 near the DOT garage, notice the blue signs that signify “our” section of highway. Twenty-fi ve students and advisors spent time picking up all sorts of interesting trash that had been deposited by unlawful litterers. Advisor Roy Dando said, “We suppose one man’s trash is another man’s…well, in this case, trash. Th ere were thousands upon thousands of cigarettes littering this two-tenths of a mile stretch.” Th e students and advisors were happy to help keep their part of the highway clean and look forward to maintaining that portion.

Th e chapter will be cleaning the roadside twice a year in the future. Many thanks go out to Tom Laskowski from the DOT for helping to organize the event.

Stephanie and her Heinz ketchup design along with internationally famous pop artist Burton Morris, who visited the school to present her with her awards.
