Convention Theme“Anaheim Special” celebrates agricultural riches that fueled the growth of Southern California. Our initial design features the orange reefer that was used to ship perishable fruit from California to all parts of the nation. Over a hundred years ago German emigrants settled aroundAnaheim and developed a wine growing region along the Santa Ana River. Late in the 1800s, vintners turned to oranges when a blight destroyed vines that had come as cuttings from the Rhineland. Upthrough World War II, two-lane roads cut through vast groves of sweet-blooming orange trees. Along these roads, small stands appeared where locals sold oranges and jars of preserves. Walter Knott owned one of these stands, and present-day Knott’s Berry Farm is an easy drive from our convention. Oranges were a durable fruit that could be shipped across the country by train. A vigorous marketing campaign soon convinced every family they needed the health-giving California sunshine captured in the orange. The California Fruit Growers Association soon obtained the needed fleet of refrigerator cars.12 or more Orange Reefers – Convention Car – Need Graphics.

Where do we fit in?

We would be displaying as part of the ILTCO group train layout.Participants:

ILTCO member clubsBayLTC, SCLTC, SPLTC, PSLTC, GPLR, others

All LEGO Train/Town (or Space, Castle, Robotics...) enthusiasts

Gate:~20,000 public visitors

10

ILTCO CoordinationSteve Barile will be the primary coordinator for this event. As others emerge as assistants they will be listed here. We will mostly follow last year’s process, as it was extremely successful! Each participating club will appoint two reps for an NMRA NTS mailing list. Volunteers on that list will jointly design the overall layout once each club submits their local design. Various clubs will provide show necessities; skirting, track for yard, etc.

Page 6: NMRA 2008: Anaheim, CAThe Convention hotel is the Marriott in Anaheim located next door to the Anaheim Convention Center site of the National Train Show. The hotel is in the Anaheim

6

11

ILTCO CommunicationsThere will be two mailing lists for this event:

A club representative mailing list (new for the 2006 show). It is mandatory for each participating club to have two reps on this mailing list, both are assumed to be attending the show and be the club rep and backup rep on site. This list is where the business of the show coordination will be conducted and will have a reasonable amount of traffic. An info mailing list for those who just want periodic updates and not all the gory details. Useful for non-reps and individual AFOLs that are not part of a larger contingent.

12

ILTCO Layout BasicsFollowing last year, the main goal is quality NOT quantity! Here are some guidelines:

All areas will be 100% stud covered. All structures will be minifig scale (L-Gauge).All areas will be fully detailed with minifigs, vehicles, etc(as scene requires). All areas will be modeled after a realistic scene in an appropriate era (when trains existed). All areas will consist of at least 90% MOCs.Each Club will be responsible for a section of the layout. There will be several regional main lines each spanning multiple clubs' areas, coordination will occur after we get the club's local submissions. It was determined last year that a giant continuous main line wouldbe problematic as well as non-eventful that same philosophy will be followed this year.

BayLTC General LogisticsI will be the main Club Representative. We need solid member participation! We are on our own for all costs associated with participating (fuel, hotel, food, etc).I will probably stay someplace cheaper than the convention hotel. Room sharing is recommended.

There is a brand new Motel 6 in Anaheim less than a mile from the Convention Center.

All members’ boxes, tubs, etc, must be labeled with “BayLTC” and member’s name. A packing list would also be helpful for each box/tub. Each building, etc, should also be labeled with your name.I believe NMRA supplies crowd barriers, so we would not need our sneezeguards, but we need to figure out how to use our tableskirts without them.

16

BayLTC Layout LogisticsLayout size?

15’x15’ or 17.5’x17.5’ or larger/smaller?Smaller layouts are easier to detail.

What do we want on the layout?Make sure areas can be fully detailed!

Brian to supply detailed road sample.Downtown; Farm; Yard; SF Waterfront; Suburbia?

Amusement Park?Harry Potter; Goofy Train (needs lots of clearance); “fantasy elements”

Train Yard – NO one member can fill entire yard! All participating members will receive a % of the yard for displaying their rolling stock.

Thomas is the only exception to the ILTCO Guidelines.

I am working on a draft and would like to get the latest info (been over a month so I am hoping plans are firming up for clubs). Here is what I have so far: TCLTC 12.5’x17’ (alone); KCLUG 15’x15’ (on side/top touching); MichianaLTC 15’x15’; INDYLUG 30’x30’; GFLTC 18’x18’ (end cap); Ondrew 15”x40”. Some of these clubs here still need to give info on what, if any, side can touch others, etc.

July 7- 9, 2006 Pennsylvania Convention Center

Philadelphia, PA

World’s Largest LEGO® Display At 16th Annual National Train Show®

July 7 – 9, Pennsylvania Convention Center

2 Million+ Pieces To Create World’s Largest LEGO® Train Layout; Replica of Boathouse Row Lighthouse And More!

PHILADELPHIA, PA --- The world’s largest LEGO® display – using

more than two million blocks – is being created exclusively for the 2006 National Train Show®, July 7 – 9 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

World’s Largest LEGO® Layout is a World of Its Own Covering nearly 8,000 sq. ft. of the exhibition floor, the Dynamic LEGO® Fantasy Land, is a mind-boggling showcase created entirely out of millions of LEGO® and Duplo® blocks! Show visitors can walk amidst this extravaganza, taking in the many different sights, sounds and scenery. They’ll be transported from…

… downtown skylines (5’-7' high skyscrapers made of hundreds of thousands of blocks)… … past some well-known Pennsylvania landmarks like Philadelphia’s Boathouse Row “Turtle

Rock” Lighthouse and Strasburg’s Historic Railroad Switch Tower, and other historic sights such as the USS Constitution & Dock Museum…

… around and through 4-foot tunneled mountain ranges… … across suspension bridges spanning above 10-foot valleys… … along the beachfront and boardwalk… … through the serene countryside and quaint rural communities… … and rushing back into a bustling metropolis (featuring buildings at 1:100 to scale)

Along with millions of blocks, there will be thousands of little LEGO® people…

sun-bathing on rooftops and beachfronts enjoying lunch at side-walk cafes crossing intersections with operating traffic signals planting gardens grocery shopping

The attention to detail is both remarkable and stunningly realistic in the LEGO® Fantasy Land.

Hundreds of Trains & A Drive-In Theater Too! A total of ten layouts will interconnect by hundreds of yards of train tracks and monorails, with trains running continuously on a total of 17 loops (7 main lines and 10 “short tracks”). Take note of the trains speeding around these tracks, as they range from realistic replicas of classic steam trains, all the way to futuristic high-speed concept trains. More than 100 different stationery trains will be also featured in rail yards and stations, which will be used for switch out on the loops. Some trains will even be mounted with miniature cameras on board (imagine 5 pennies stacked together) which will broadcast real-time, color footage of the surrounding scenery on the LEGO® Land Drive-In Theater as they speed on by.

-2- World’s Largest Lego® Display @ World’s Largest Model Train Show: July 7 – 9, Philadelphia Being A “Lego Architect” But how do you go from the real thing to the LEGO® thing? Steve Barile, president of the International LEGO® Train Club Organization (ILTCO) – the world’s largest member organization for LEGO® enthusiasts – lends some insight. “Being a ‘LEGO® designer’ is like being an architect. You literally develop this ability to see everything around you in terms of the LEGO® block,” says Barile. “You make the bricks your palate. Then you begin to deconstruct the building or whatever it is you’re trying to replicate, into the kind of blocks you need to create that feature. Do I need a 2-hole block or a 6-hole block? In your mind’s eye, you can see it coming together brick by brick,” he continues.

According to ILTCO, LEGO® train modelers are the fastest growing group of model train hobbyists in the world. LEGO® modeling is a boon for bringing younger enthusiasts to the model railroading pastime (they are generally 25 – 45 years old), as well as an economic boon with enthusiasts spend nearly $1,000 a month on the hobby.

National Group Effort ILTCO is leading this massive, collaborative effort to create the LEGO® Fantasy Land at the Show. Other

clubs participating include: 1. Central Ohio LEGO® Train Club 2. Delaware Valley LEGO® Users Group 3. Gardens LEGO® Users Group (New Jersey) 4. Indianapolis LEGO® Users Group (Indiana) 5. MichIana LEGO® Users Group (So. Michigan, No. Indiana)

6. Michigan LEGO® Train Club 7. Pennsylvania LEGO® Users Group 8. Sand Hills Short Line LEGO® Train Club (So. Carolina) 9. Twin Cities LEGO® Train Club (Minnesota) 10. Washington D.C. Metropolitan Area LEGO® Train Club

These clubs represent some of the 30+ active and affiliate LEGO® modeling clubs throughout the world

under the umbrella of ILTCO – including groups recently established in Australia, Hungary, The Netherlands, Japan and France. For more information visit www.iltco.org.

World’s Largest Model Train Show to Host World’s Largest LEGO® Display There’s only one place to see the world’s largest LEGO® Display – and that’s at the world’s largest model train show – the National Train Show®. The 16th annual show will be arriving to Philadelphia’s Pennsylvania Convention Center for a one-time appearance from July 7 – 9, 2006. Show hours are:

OLD-STYLE REFRIGERATOR CAR 49

Over the years, these wooden

reefers were continually

upgraded to improve the effec-

tiveness of the ice cooling. Still,

the thing about ice is that it

melts. Every so often, the train

had to stop at icing stations

along the track to replace the

melted ice. The fresh ice was

added to the reefer cars through

openings in their roofs.

This old-style reefer car was

one of my favorite lego mod-

els so far. (Figure 1)

Using the Internet and the

lego cad software (see www.

ldraw.org for more info on the

software), fellow lego Train

builder James Mathis and I col-

laborated on this design.

Together we developed a ter-

rific design that, while simple,

is still quite elegant.

COLOR SCHEME

The great thing about reefers is

that thousands were built over

the years. Many were owned

by companies who branded

them with their colors and

logos in order to use them as

OLD-STYLEREFRIGERATOR CARSince the early days of the railroads, large amounts of food have

moved around the country in refrigerated rail cars. Today’s cars use

mechanical refrigeration units, but prior to their development, ice

had to be used in these reefer cars (short for “refrigerated”) to keep the

food cool. Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of these cars used to rumble

down the tracks delivering fresh produce, meats, and other perishable

goods to markets around the country.
