New Mexico Field Internship

Amnesty International USA (AIUSA) is offering field internships for individuals who are passionate about human rights and eager to learn moreabout how field work, organizing, and grassroots campaigns contribute to the realization of human rights in the US and abroad. The internship

provides opportunity for growth as human rights defenders and provides interns with education, tools and resources to be leaders at AmnestyInternational and the broader human rights and social justice field.

Located in San Francisco, the Western Regional Office of AIUSA supports the work of AI members and groups across thirteen western US

states. The mission of AIUSA's regional offices is to recruit, educate, train, and mobilize AI members and supporters to promote our humanrights agenda. Field Organizers in the office work to recruit new activists, develop the capacity of AIUSA members, and provide our membersand the public with the knowledge, resources, skills, and action opportunities to enable them to be effective human rights activists. They work

with volunteer activists to create public awareness of Amnesty's work through outreach, public and formal education, and by approachinglocal and regional media.

Field Organizers spend approximately 25% of their time travelling in assigned states. As a critical on-the-ground resource, New Mexico FieldInterns are supervised by and work directly with Field Organizer Sara Schmidt. Additionally, Field Interns will work directly with and besupervised by statewide volunteer leadership in New Mexico.

The work and involvement of Field Interns is an essential resource for state-based work and interns are held to the same professionalstandards as AIUSA staff. Field Interns support the work of Amnesty International by assisting with event planning, organizing publicity andeducational efforts, and supporting outreach to community organizations and groups. Field Interns are involved with the development of

human rights work across the state, which involves building and revitalizing AIs membership base and carrying out strategic and effectiveaction on all priority campaigns. More information about AIUSA campaigns can be found at www.amnestyusa.org/campaigns.

We seek interns who exhibit the following qualities and skills:

y Commitment to and interest in human rights and social justicey Self-motivation, initiative, and strong ability to work independently without constant supervisiony Strong organizational and administrative skills as well as attention to detaily Excellence in interpersonal, oral, and written communicationy Demonstrated professionalism and commitment to follow through on assigned projectsy Willingness to represent Amnesty International locally

Special skills such as experience with activism, organizing, and event planning, comfort with public speaking, and media and/or social mediabackground are helpful but not required. The internship will be personalized to the skills and interests of the intern as well as the needs of the

Field Organizer and statewide volunteer leaders such as the Student Activist Coordinators.

The internship requires a minimum of five hours per week for a minimum of eight weeks. Hours are flexible and may include weekdays,evenings and weekends as needed and based on the availability of the intern. Field Interns are expected to take part in the following:

y Weekly calls with the Field Organizer and other calls as necessaryy Submit proposals for outreach, tabling, and educational eventsy Document all internship hours electronically and submit to Field Organizer weeklyy Identify opportunities to represent Amnesty International

Field Interns are provided with ongoing support and training, including an initial orientationwith the Field Organizer. Interns will become expert on Amnesty International and human

rights, and will be asked to deliver a presentation on these topics to the Field Organizerbefore conducting outreach or public speaking in their community.

The internship is unpaid. However, we are happy to work with interns to arrange for community service, service learning, or independentstudy hours if the intern seeks such an arrangement. Expenses incurred through the internship will be reimbursed or pre-paid for the intern,

including fuel or transportation costs.
