Welcome and opening keynoteKaren Moxom, Lisa Wake, Frank Bourke and Paul ToseyKaren Moxom and Lisa Wake will be presenting the findings from a working group looking into the development of a set of standards that NLP Practitioners can aspire to and be recognised for. This is a key initiative and ties in with many similar initiatives and our ongoing theme of collaboration. Recognition for the skills that NLP Practitioners possess and what they have to offer society is a key goal for many in the field of NLP and we at the NLP Conference support all initiatives that are designed to help achieve that goal. This session will also include up to date news of research initiatives including The International NLP Research Conference and the NLP Research and Recognition Project.

In this workshop delegates will have the opportunity to begin to explore simple yet highly effective tools for managing difficult or uncomfortable situations. Creating dynamic and effective classroom and learning environments in a world where one size does not fit allNick OwenOpen to all

Working with NLP tools, input from developmental psychology [Spiral Dynamics], stories and storytelling Nick will investigate whether such a thing as an ideal learning environment can be created. And, if it could, how would you know you had it? He’ll explore how the use of different methodologies is required to meet the needs of learners with different learning styles, and with differing levels of complexity in their meaning and sense-making capabilities. And if, as is usually the case, these differing learners are in the same class or other learning environment what kind of things can you do to construct a session that has something for everyone? The workshop will be experiential, active and inquiring, It is designed for those working at all levels of education and will deliver some simple, powerful and proven ways of engaging with, motivating, and challenging everyone in any given learning environment to learn more effortlessly and enjoyably.

Clean Language in the classroomJulie McCrackenOpen to all

Julie McCracken has pioneered the use of Clean Language in the classroom. Clean Language is a fast growing branch of NLP that utilises the metaphors we use for personal and professional change. In this session she will detail some of the ways the curriculum is already being met ‘cleanly’ in classrooms and some ideas for really making it sparkle in the future. You will also learn how to incorporate these ideas into curriculum areas such as speaking and listening, writing, reading, PE, Art, Maths, Science, thinking skills, behaviour management, co-operative classroom culture, AFL (assessment for learning), confidence, and test performance.

Using drama to engage and excite learners John CareyOpen to all

This session will give you the opportunity to explore the powerful combination of NLP, drama-in-education and drama therapy conventions to facilitate the learning of young people and adults. In so doing you will experience some new, creative, challenging and engaging ways of helping your learners achieve success. This is an interactive session where you’ll work in groups to explore theory and practice, and reflect on the potential for creating long-lasting change. The approaches are also very useful for personal and professional development and you can add them to the methods you already use as part of any INSET or development sessions you may already offer.

Educating to inspireAndrew BendefyOpen to all

Twenty percent of the people in the UK have literacy and numeracy challenges. Andrew will show you how to alter the emotional and behavioural processes that run at an ‘other than conscious level’ in order to help pupils who have difficulty with issues such as reading, spelling, getting thoughts down on paper, tackling tasks involving several steps, times tables or mental arithmetic, concentrating and focusing on learning when their family unit suddenly breaks up.

Bringing laughter and humour into the classroomDavid Keeling and Stephanie DaviesOpen to all

Did you know that the main learning neurochemical in the brain is dopamine? Laughter increases dopamine levels, helping us to make learning connections. Therefore if we get someone emotionally involved in what we are doing, excite them, make them happy and even make them laugh then they will start to learn more quickly. Creating an environment where happiness and positive reward are the fundamentals in learning will affect the amount of information taken in and retained.

Feeling drained? Reclaim your natural energy levels with Energetic NLP (ENLP)Anne SmithOpen to all

Many coaches, therapists and teachers are sensitive to energies and, whilst they are great at creating and maintaining rapport and relationships, they often find that these interactions can be quite challenging to their energy levels. By discovering how to create an energy space for yourself using Energetic NLP and also how to clear other people’s energies from your own space you will learn some simple yet effective techniques to help you maintain your energy levels in the workplace and at home.

The healthy classroomMichael GrinderOpen to all

Michael Grinder’s engaging style and insights have amazed educators internationally for over two decades and he is widely regarded as one of America’s foremost teacher trainers. His emphasis on non-verbal communication in a group setting is unique and practical. This session will distill the very best of Michael’s 40 years’ experience of training teachers on four continents. The session will cover: Teaching that Inspires; Charisma; Working with Difficult Students; How Not to Get Shot; and Group Dynamics.

The unique self – a new integral perspective on enlightenmentWyatt WoodsmallOpen to all

The aim of this session is to explore the identity changes and the belief changes that must occur as one moves from normal waking consciousness to an enlightened state. The NLP model is very powerful for understanding and creating changes in levels of consciousness. In this workshop Wyatt will focus on how to reach an enlightened state and what shifts are necessary for this to happen. The Unique Self is a powerful new paradigm for enlightenment and universal spirituality developed by Ken Wilber and Mark Gafni. It combines the traditional Eastern paradigm of enlightenment based on the ‘true self’ with the western paradigm of enlightenment based on the ‘unique self’.

Modelling language, changing languageJohn McWhirterNLP Practitioners and above

In this workshop John will introduce a variety of useful new language distinctions, models and skills that can be used in combination with traditional NLP to greatly increase the range of options available for modelling and effective change work. The aim of this workshop is to introduce participants to new developments in language that add to traditional NLP and that offer a wider range of options and a greater precision in questioning, understanding clients, directing language and utilising language as a direct tool for change work.

Breaking and creating habits – what happens when neuroscience meets NLPIan McDermott and Patricia RiddellOpen to all

Our understanding of the brain has increased dramatically in the last 20 years, but little of this has been converted into practical applications that help us change behaviour. To make this happen, it is necessary to bring academic research, effective technologies and people’s practical needs together. That means a new synthesis of disciplines and that’s why Ian and Patricia have chosen to work together. They have used a combination of neuroscience and NLP to give them a handle on how to change habitual behaviour. Expect to leave with a new understanding of how change happens and what to do when it does.

Inside a Symbolic Modeller’s MindJames Lawley and Penny TompkinsNLP Practitioner and above

Using Symbolic Modelling and Clean Language James and Penny will co-coach a live session with a volunteer client. The session will be videoed. During the playback they will explain what they noticed, how they calibrated the client and modelled their metaphors, and how that informed the questions they asked. Participants will be able to ask questions and model how two expert facilitators achieve so much by doing so little. Be prepared to discover that change-work can be amazingly simple – it doesn’t even require a change technique.

I am not lost … I am exploring Kevin Laye Open to all

Erickson once said, “If you listen to the client, they will tell you not only what the problem is, but also how to fix it too”. The Law of Requisite Variety also states that he (or she) who has access to the most flexibility will win out in most given situations. In Kevin’s mind (at least) NLP is not a set of techniques but an attitude and a freedom which should enable you to use whatever is necessary to get not only yourself but also your clients in to an optimum state rapidly and easily. The aim of this session is to enable delegates to see the magic of creating ‘bespoke’ and tailor made sessions for their clients and experience what can happen when the metaphorical ‘handcuffs’ of technique are removed.

Solving impossible problems in businessJoe and Melody ChealOpen to all

Joe Cheal has been helping people work through so called ‘impossible’ problems since 1993. Impossible problems twist and turn and defy resolution. When you think you have them nailed down, they loop, split and flip, taking you round in circles until you find yourself back at square one. This session will guide you to greater innovation, heightened wellbeing and enhanced thinking power through the revolutionary process of Paradox Management, a new but growing field in the area of business management that will give you a greater understanding of organisational tensions and paradox.

Sessions: These run in parallel and are stand-alone workshops – you can attend one session per time slot. All speakers are confirmed but the organisers reserve the right to make changes to the programme if necessary.

Organisational culture change with NLPJohn SeymourOpen to all

In working as an organisational consultant for 20 years, John has often had to go beyond skills training and work with the culture of the organisation. He will be talking about his experiences of this and addressing some of the more important questions. How do you know when culture change is the issue? What strategies are most effective in addressing one of the toughest issues in organisation consulting? How do you know when it is working? This will be a short talk followed by questions and answers.

Metaprograms in businessLindsey AgnessOpen to all

In this session participants will learn how to use several popular Meta Programmes in the context of corporate team building events. Participants will have the opportunity to complete a personal questionnaire and be part of a human graph as the styles of the group are explored. Lindsey will use her extensive experience of using this toolkit in business to explain how best to utilise the feedback for optimum team results.

Somatic coaching – too simple for words?Paul KingOpen to all

An interactive session inspired by martial arts, mindfulness, NLP and ‘other stuff’, exploring our patterns of mind and body in practice. The aim of this session is to explore how the body can both reveal and impact our cognitive and emotional patterns.

Coaching clients through complexityLynne CooperOpen to all

In this session you’ll discover a technique for coaching your clients to cut through the challenges of multiple party relationships, projects and political situations. It’s a straightforward and fast to use approach, based on the principles of Clean Space and perceptual positions. It’s particularly useful for coaches working with people who need to influence a complex system, often those working in or with organisations.

NLP to make your school daySue Bayliss and Stephen BishopOpen to all

This insight-packed, upbeat, teacher-tested session will help you cope with and conquer the personal challenges of education today, transforming yourself and those you work with. Stephen Bishop has 7 years’ experience of using NLP in a school environment. He joins forces with Sue Bayliss to whisk you through a composite ‘teacher’s day’: from the miracle of getting out of bed, through an edited collection of daily occurrences, from tough kids to meetings to inspection, ending with the art of going home, both physically and mentally (and without the regular use of alcohol).

Daring to trustMarie FaireOpen to all

This session will explore the structure and nature of trust and trustworthiness – fundamental qualities in personal and organisational relationships. What impacts our capacity to trust ourselves and to trust others? How does it link into fear and risk? When do you trust and when don’t you? When would it be better if you didn’t? How do we develop our capacity and wisdom around trust and trustworthiness? These are some of the questions that will be addressed in this session, which is inspired by the work of David Richo.

Stripped down clean for workWendy SullivanNLP Practitioners and above

The latest cognitive science findings on the role of metaphor in thought make clear that Clean Language works with the very way we are built to think. Awareness of the field is growing, especially in regard to coaching, but Clean Language, with some tweaks, can be used to great effect in many work situations too, and in this interactive session, after briefly reviewing common business applications, you’ll have the chance to experience a simple, tried and tested, practical Clean application.

NLP and the NHS – finding a common languageLisa EdenNLP Practitioners and above

This session will equip NLP Practitioners with a greater understanding of the practical applications of NLP for healthcare professionals and a framework to directly link NLP theory with health practice. We will discuss together the myriad ways in which NLP can enhance the interventions NHS staff have with their patients and each other,

mapping NLP techniques against common NHS situations. In a group exercise, we will explore NLP presuppositions and find the synergies and correlations with clinical language and practice.

Juggling aphorisms and mixing metaphorsJames GearyOpen to all

Best-selling author James Geary presents Juggling Aphorisms and Mixing Metaphors, a lively and engaging session that involves serious juggling of words, ideas and balls. In his book I Is an Other, Geary takes readers from Aristotle’s investigation of metaphor right up to the latest neuro-scientific insights into how metaphor works in the brain. Along the way, he demonstrates how metaphor affects financial decision making, how metaphor lurks behind effective advertisements, how metaphor inspires learning and discovery, and how metaphor can be used as a tool to achieve emotional insight and psychological change.

Monitoring your happiness levelsFran BurgessOpen to all

Happiness as both a state and a concept has been given a high profile of late. Being happy raises our game, maintains our health and opens our potential to engage more fully with the world. In offering her Happiness Model, which was arrived at from modelling moments of happiness, Fran Burgess presents what she considers to be the key components of happiness. Following on from this workshop you will be able to try on these components to see how they fit independently within your own model of the world. You will also be able quickly to highlight those aspects which are lowering your levels of happiness and prepare yourself for any future threats to your ability to hold onto your happiness.

Sobriety demystified – getting clean and sober using NLP and CBTByron LewisOpen to all

Understanding the mechanical and cognitive components of addiction provides a foundation for the effective application of various approaches to treatment. This session offers a brief overview of theoretical models of addiction towards an emergent paradigm. Building on that platform Byron will review strategies for interrupting addictive and compulsive modes of thinking and behaving and for managing reward-seeking habits. The crossover between certain aspects of NLP and cognitive behavioral therapy evidence-based treatment strategies will be emphasized.

Bringing personality into the classroomDavid HodgsonOpen to all

Successful schools help students achieve their full potential by understanding the personality of each student. This boosts performance and improves results. In this session you will learn how to apply the best of personality type theory to help motivate and inspire young people to be their best and make more informed and positive choices. School leaders will gain a valuable tool which will help them understand their own leadership styles and appreciate how best to lead and motivate other staff. Feedback from the David’s training days is fantastic.

NLP Master – Mind ToolsLaureli Blyth and Heidi HeronOpen to all

Using a combination of fun, light trance, NLP and Clean Language Hans-Christian and Katherine will lead you to explore how to access your body’s wisdom. Your body cannot lie to you but are you listening to what it is saying? In a world that for many of us is lived constantly on ‘fast forward’ this session will help you to open up to the messages that you might otherwise ignore or override. The aim of this session is to enable you to become more profoundly in touch with your body and the messages and insights that your body is constantly communicating to you.

Living congruentlyKaren Meager and John McLachlanNLP Practitioners and above

Congruence is in the ‘easier said than done’ pile of personal development work and is linked to our memories, values and strategies. This workshop will unpack the psychology behind incongruence and, in particular, will look at why, when and how it develops. Expanding on this awareness the session will discuss ways in which you can live more congruently and highlight the NLP processes and techniques that are useful in developing congruence.

The world has never seen such a multitude of new developments, new techniques and new scientific research and it is thrilling to witness more and more people adopting and accepting these new approaches. Yet what happens when these same people face a crisis? Many either forget what they’ve learned or don’t know how to apply their new skills. As one of Arielle’s

In this practical session you will find out how to transform fear into confident communication through NLP modelling.

Clean Language in management coaching and super-visionJackie Arnold and Neil WilliamsOpen to all

Coaching and supervising with Clean Language focuses exquisite attention on the person being coached. Working with metaphor condenses and clarifies information and provides an anchor for people to work with. It also magnifies a person’s experience and as a result is highly motivational. Clean Language can be very challenging as it uses the receiver’s own words and there is no escape or misunderstanding. It also provides a very strong connection as rapport building is quick and conversations flow without interference.

Collaboration in the NLP community panel discussionIan McDermott, Michael Hall and Shelle Rose Charvet (via Skype)Open to all

The strength of NLP is that it enables people to become more fully themselves: it cultivates individuals and individualism. Yet when over-done this virtue can become a vice and prevent us from collaborating as a community. In many countries NLP is languishing for lack of cooperation and collaboration. One recent example of successful collaboration occurred in 2011 when 24 NLP leaders/ trainers came together to create the book Innovations in NLP. Since then Michael Hall, Shelle Rose Charvet and Ian McDermott have been collaborating to explore and model the critical factors of collaboration. This Saturday evening panel will present some of their findings to clarify what we can do – or stop doing – to be more collaborative. The panel discussion will explore what NLP people can do to create and sustain collaboration. Please note that Shelle Rose Charvet will join us via Skype.

An Ecology of Mind – A film portrait of Gregory BatesonOpen to all

An Ecology of Mind is a film portrait of Gregory Bateson, celebrated anthropologist, philosopher, author, naturalist, systems theorist and filmmaker, produced and directed by his daughter, Nora Bateson. The film includes footage from Bateson’s own films shot in the 1930s in Bali (with Margaret Mead) and New Guinea, along with photographs, filmed lectures, and interviews. Nora depicts him as a man who studied the interrelationships of the complex systems in which we live with a depth motivated by scientific rigor and caring integrity. But she also sets out to show that his ideas are not just fodder for academic theory, but can help instruct a way of life. She presents his thinking

using a richly personal perspective, focusing on the stories Bateson used to present his ideas and how the beauty of life itself provided the framework of his life’s pursuits.

Non-verbal process controlFrank PucelikOpen to all

Often communicators, even professionals, focus on language skills, anchoring, strategies, imbedded suggestions/commands, etc. Seldom do we carefully develop the subtle, but powerful, art of influencing the thought processes of the people who are talking to us or to the people who are talking to other people in our presence. This seminar is devoted to this gentle but powerful art. Frank will demonstrate and discuss the different kinds of process cues. You will lead conversations with your process cues and find out how accurate your ‘process story’ was, according to your ‘listener’.

Belief bustingJeremy LazarusOpen to all

Our beliefs, whether they are empowering or limiting, have a major impact on the results and satisfaction we experience in our life. Almost everyone experiences the impact of a limiting belief at some point, and for a few people their limiting beliefs have a major adverse impact on their life. NLP contains numerous ways to change beliefs, hence creating the opportunity for lasting change and improvement in results. In this interactive session you will learn several ways to change limiting beliefs conversationally, which will help you personally/professionally and help you to help others.

Totems of healing and transformationPamela Gawler-WrightSome NLP experience required

The influence of the Native American healing tradition in Milton Erickson’s work is very apparent when we know how to see it. The shamanic elements to his character and world view are cited by those who worked most closely with Erickson as core elements to really understanding the application of his hypnotic and psychotherapeutic methods. In this session you will learn how to reconnect with the fertility of your imagination and enjoy your living bond with nature as healer.

NLP and business partneringDianne LowtherOpen to all

In this session Diane will be sharing two case studies of training for business partners. One was for an HR team, the other for IT professionals. She will show you how NLP thinking helped to identify and describe the skills needed and then look at some of the training innovations that created rapid learning of the same skills. You’ll get an overall view of how to develop consulting skills for yourself or others.

Participants will have an opportunity to add to their own consulting skills as part of this session.

Effective confrontation – how to confront compassionatelyL. Michael HallNLP Practitioners and above

Naming, blaming, reframing; my life as a human thesaurus!Judith LoweNLP Practitioners and above

Working creatively, playfully and collaboratively with language is a key skill in developing mastery and artistry in your NLP practice – your pathway to being more of a Picasso or an Ella Fitzgerald with NLP. Judith will be naming and framing, using a spot of ‘e-prime’ and more … discovering how language creates our reality and how conversational magic happens when all our skills are working together. This session will be practical, lively and fun and encourage you to continue the artist’s journey of integration and learning – and take your systemic NLP to the next level.

The magic of deletions and distortionsPeter McNab and Steve FaulknerOpen to all

There is much to be learnt from the world of magic about the power and the value of distracting attention; Peter and Steve will be using these lessons to enhance your understanding and utilisation of the Deletions, Generalisations and Distortions of the Meta Model. In addition, you will not only see magic performed by one of the top professional magicians in the country, and previously Covent Garden’s top street-performer, but also learn how to use these concepts in your work as you learn to perform some simple magic tricks using coins and cards. Energetic NLP is a unique blend of NLP, transformative energy work and spiritual development. In this packed workshop you will learn Energetic NLP processes that you will be able to use immediately to take your work with others to a new level. Improve your vision with NLP and FeldenkraisKatrina PattersonOpen to all

The aim of this experiential workshop is to motivate you to exercise your eyes for a few minutes each day and to see/hear and feel your eyes as a feedback system for your whole body and the state of your health – especially if you use computers. Emergent knowledge in the workplace – the power of 6 leadership metaphorsCaitlin Walker and Julian BurtonOpen to all

Caitlin and artist Julian will demonstrate a process they have developed for eliciting 6 metaphors of embodied leadership from their clients. This leads them to a deep sense of who they are and how they do things, allows them to align around their values and allows them to increase their congruence and presence. They can then make clearer sense of what is happening around them and make more effective decisions for their organisation. When this process is run with a leadership team of up to 6 people, it creates a network of attention across the individuals from which new, emergent, knowledge is born.

The zero point – in the paradox of nothing lay the seeds of the infiniteJoe and Melody ChealNLP Practitioners and above

The Zero Point is a new NLP model designed to help you access a state of complete mindfulness The Zero Point is the place where timeline, internal representations and meta-levels meet, the place where we become truly present, experiencing the here and now. There is no distraction … no internal dialogue – it is in this moment that we are in flow. Drawing from concepts in NLP, positive psychology, quantum physics and mathematics, this interactive session will give you physiological, psychological and environmental strategies for reconnecting to your Zero Point and experiencing the benefits of the infinite now.

Speak with convictionRichard RudmanNLP Practitioners and above

Richard will demonstrate the technique used in IBM to help technical leaders to ‘Speak with Conviction’. The session will cover the strategies employed by exemplars in this area: individuals with an apparent natural ability to speak with authority and gravitas. It will include a 3 minute video clip. He will explore the values and beliefs that can help you to Speak with Conviction. You’ll be invited to walk though the logical levels for yourself, and identify any adjustments you would like to make.

No one forgets where they buried the hatchetArthur SackruleNLP Practitioners and above

Certain challenges just seem to defy all attempts at solutions. Even though you may have acknowledged a positive intention and stated a well-defined outcome, nothing in your toolbox seems to be working. Could it be that there’s a sort of underlying buried energy that needs to be attended to? An energy that might just have got buried slightly too quickly? Arthur believes that this energy represents itself in the form that the Greeks referred to as a ‘daimon’, and that, instead of being defeated, it wants to be befriended so that it can reveal its true worth. In this intriguing workshop Arthur will show you how this can be achieved.

The tipping pointNina Len and Richard LewisOpen to all

This session will look at increasing your competitive edge by strategically developing your talent through the use of the following new and specialist personality tests & tools: Risk Type – a new personality assessment which measures an individual’s natural disposition towards being Risk Seeking or Risk Averse; Bright Side and Dark Side Personality Measures – identifies eleven patterns of dysfunctional interpersonal behaviour; and Strengths and Gap 360 Feedback – Nina and Richard will discuss a 360 feedback tool that can provide this type of data plus a means of tracking positive behavioural change over time in order to provide return on investment data.

In this session you will learn how to influence the ANS to help you and your clients to get into this very productive state. With exercises, video clips and demos participants will explore and experience the impact of these deep interventions. Stephen GilliganThe Experience of Creative Flow

GenerativeTrance

This major new work from renowned author and trainer Stephen Gilligan reveals how life

can be lived as a great journey of consciousness. The author emphasizes that reality and identity

are constructed by ourselves, and explains how generative trance is crucial in creating

new realities and possibilities for clients. It is a view that differs markedly from the traditional

hypnosis ideas of a client losing control, as well as from Ericksonian approaches that

feature a benevolent hypnotist who bypasses the conscious mind to work with a client’s

unconscious mind. Instead, generative trance stresses a “disciplined flow” process in which a person’s conscious and unconscious minds cooperate to weave a higher consciousness

capable of transformational change.

“Generative Trance is an extraordinary book … filled with different and new perspectives, captivating and – most important – valuable.

My father would be so proud!”

Betty Alice Erickson, MS

Stephen Gilligan, PhD, has become a leading figure in Ericksonian hypnotherapy. He is the developer of the Generative Self approach to personal growth. A licensed psychologist, Stephen maintains a private practice in Encinitas, California.

Coaches and therapists everywhere are throwing off the shackles of humming and nodding! Not only can provocative coaching be highly effective - especially with so-called ‘impossible’ clients - but it also liberates both professionals and their clients.

This is a book about challenging people in order to help them. It explains in detail how to do Provocative Coaching and the psychological mechanisms through which the provocative style works. It may seem like quite an unusual way of behaving for a professional coach or therapist: humour, however is an important aspect of coaching. Provocative Coaching is related to ‘paradoxical intention’ and ‘reverse psychology’.
