Serviceability Improvements on Popular Webb Steer Axle Brake Drums

To improve upon the serviceability of popular steer axle brake drums offered by Webb Wheel Products, a secondary pilot has been designed into the mounting flange. This pilot improves the brake drum’s ability to properly align with its mating hub and reduce the potential of a mis-installation and its subsequent effects. The brake drum mounting interface conforms with SAE J1671 by maintaining a primary mounting pilot of ~8.78” and a mounting chamfer of ~0.12”. The secondary pilot will maintain a diameter of ~8.66” which will slightly engage the hub’s wheel pilot and help reduce the potential of the brake drum’s disengagement from the hub’s drum pilot during the installation process. Effective immediately, the secondary pilot will be machined into the following Webb brake drums: 61528B, 65548B, 65710B, 65151B. When installing all Webb brake drums, always refer to the procedures outlined in TMC RP 662 “Outboard Drum Removal And Installation Procedures for Class 7-8 Wheel-Ends” or click here to visit Webb’s Online Training Toolbox.
