A self-navigating, station-holding buoy is proposed as a cheaper alternative to a conventional buoy moored in very deep water. The new buoy, which has been modelled successfully, is based on a 1969 design which features an aerofoil sail, a rudder, and an on-board computer for use with a satellite navigation system. The author describes design improvements in the aerofoil and cites recent advances in microelectronics as evidence for the potential cost-effectiveness of this quasi-stationary buoy. Meteorol.
