THE PRINTING INDUSTRY ISENTERING THE DIGITAL ERA - FACT

OR FANTASY?Benny Landa, HP Indigo

Commercial printing is the last vestige of the ana-log era: a $400 billion industry that has barely beentouched by the digital revolution. Is this industryfinally ready to yield? Or will the digital transfor-mation of the printing industry continue to eludeits pursuers? Is there a "killer app" that will blowthis market open? If so, what are its key enablers?Will inkjet, xerography and liquid electrophotog-raphy all compete in this space? Does the Internetcomplement - or compete with - commercial digi-tal printing? Lastly, what’s the big deal - who needsit anyhow?

Benny Landa is the founder of Indigo, now a di-vision of Hewlett-Packard. He serves as strategicadvisor to HP CEO Carly Fiorina, has been grantedover 140 U.S. patents and hundreds more world-wide, including Digital Offset Color patents andpatents for Electroink that are at the core of theIndigo technology. In October 2002, Mr. Landawas awarded the Edwin H. Land Medal by theOptical Society of America and the Society forImaging Science and Technology for his pioneer-ing work in imaging and his entrepreneurial cre-ativity. For his outstanding contributions to theindustry, particularly the Indigo Digital OffsetColor printing process. Mr. Landa was awardedthe Institute of Printing’s Gold Medal in 2000. Inthe words of the Institute, the Indigo Digital Off-set Color printing process is “one of the most sig-nificant technological innovations in our industrysince the development of offset printing more than100 years ago.”

CHEMICAL TONER TECHNOLOGY ANDTHE FUTURE

This talk is about “The Chemical Toner Technol-ogy and The Future” and brief history, difficulty,breakthrough technology and potentials. Althoughchemical process toner seemed to be more suit-able than melt-mix and crush method, chemicalprocess toners such as suspension polymerizedtoner was not launched for some time yet. Thefirst reason is its difficulty for charge control andthe second, is poor blade cleaning applicability.Huge investment is also a barrier for hardwarecompanies. But at the end of 90’s, several power-ful industries began to produce various types ofchemical toners because of the technology break-throughs such as: charge control improvement,

Keynote Papersmicro encapsulation method establishment, shapecontrol process, smaller particle toner manufac-turing process-improvement, color oilless capa-bility realization, and so on. One of the dominantchemical processes is suspension polymerizationtoner from Nippon Zeon and Canon. The seconddominant process is emulsion aggregation methodtoner from Konica and Fuji Xerox. Chemical ton-ers are still low compared with conventional meth-ods, but considering the much higher potentialsof super high print quality for graphic arts, ulti-mate transfer efficiency, relative environmental ad-vantage for CO2 reduction and other superiorproperties of their future possibilities, the amountsof production will increase explosively soon.

Takayoshi Aoki graduated from Kyoto Univer-sity in 1974 (Faculty of engineering, Organic syn-thesis) and joined Fuji Xerox in 1982. For 15 years,his main activity was in toner and developer ma-terial design. After that, he has been the managerof toner and developer, photoreceptor and otherchemical materials for xerography such as fuser.He holds 98 Japanese patents, 31 U.S. patents,and is the co-author of three books. His latest po-sition is General manager of Chemicals CreationCenter in Fuji Xerox. He is a member of the Im-aging Society of Japan.

EVOLUTION OF PRODUCTIONCOLOR PRINTING

In the last ten years, Digital Production ColorPrinting has evolved from an emerging segmentof color printing to one that is ready for “primetime”. We will review how technology develop-ments have resulted in product attributesto satisfy customer needs for this segment. We willalso discuss our view of the next frontier of cus-tomer needs, and predict how the industry will beable to satisfy these needs for the next phase ofgrowth for this segment.

Arun Chowdry has been with NexPress since itsformation in 1997, and is currently Chief Techni-cal Officer and Vice President. He was part of theteam that architected the NexPress platform andselected the technology sets for the first productand for future products. His career started at theEastman Kodak Company, where he worked onnovel imaging processes, development of high-quality color electrophotographic systems and newbusiness opportunities for color electrophotogra-phy. At Kodak, he held positions of LaboratoryHead (1981-92), Manager, New Business Oppor-tunities (1993-95), and General Manager, ColorEP Technology & Programs (1995-97). Dr.Chowdry is the author of 16 patents.

RELATING SECURITY PRINTING TOEMERGING DIGITAL PRINTING

Today all documents that carry intrinsic value con-tain one or more security design features. Appli-cations of security printing range from banknotes,passports and ID documents, to checks, lotterytickets and gift vouchers. Dramatic growth in prod-uct counterfeiting has also lead to more attentionto the packaging of fraud-sensitive goods. It isclear that these markets have different demands,yet they share a common goal: to make life diffi-cult for the counterfeiter through design complex-ity and authenticity verification features.

Today, we also notice an ever-increasing inter-est from the security printing industry in the de-veloping technologies for digital printing. This

interest includes both opportunity as well as risk-assessment. An overview of existing and emerg-ing technologies will be placed in comparison withthe current practices for the production of secu-rity documents and brand protection. The variousparameters (ink, substrate, and design) of digitalprinting and their relationship to the specific needsand concerns of the security printing industry willbe discussed.

Jan van Laethem is Manager, Security Systemsfor dotrix nv. He began his career at Barco in1989, where he started in software applicationdevelopment for CAD systems for the packag-ing design market. This work included the devel-opment of a CAD system specifically for theceramics design market. Since 1993, he has beenwith the Security Systems Group, and was respon-sible for the design and implementation of theFortuna digital design and assembly system. Atthe end of 2001, dotrix was created from the In-dustrial Printing Group of Barco. In his currentposition at dotrix, he is managing the Security Sys-tems group, that develops and markets the Fortuna,SecuSeal, and SecuPass/Insider products. Mr. vanLaethem holds an engineering degree in electron-ics.

This tutorial describes how halftone technologyand the HVS interacts to provide the illusion ofcolor images when little color actually exists. At-tendees will learn how the various types of half-tone screens communicate visual information andhow each fail and succeed.

Topics include color gamut, dot shape reten-tion, moiré avoidance, spatial frequency mainte-nance, the five laws of screen degradation,metadata use to control quality, types of quantifi-cation errors, print quality metrics, Human VisualSystem filtering, Human Contrast Sensitivity func-tion, etc. Mathematical concepts are describedwith illustrations. The tutorial focuses on how dith-ering affects the quality of image reproduction.Mechanical artifacts are described only in rela-tion to digital reproduction properties.

Lawrence B. Schein received his Ph.D. in solidstate experimental physics from the University ofIllinois in 1970. He worked at the Xerox Corpo-ration from 1970 to 1983 and at the IBM Corpo-ration from 1983 to 1994. He is now anindependent consultant. He has helped implementdevelopment systems in IBM laser printers, hasproposed theories of most of the known electro-photographic development systems, and has con-tributed to our understanding of toner charging andcharge transport mechanisms in photoreceptors.He is the author of “Electrophotography and De-velopment Physics,” a Fellow of the Society forImaging Science and Technology, recipient of theCarlson Memorial Award in 1993, a Senior Mem-ber of the IEEE, and a member of the AmericanPhysical Society and the Electrostatics Society ofAmerica.

Alan L. Hudd founded Xennia Technology in April1996, an independent contract ink jet technologyhouse dedicated to developing new ink jet inks forindustrial and office ink jet industries. In 1987, hejoined Domino Printing Sciences and spent eightyears as the Fluids Technology Manager, develop-ing a wide range of ink jet inks for diverse applica-tions. He is credited with a number of patents andsignificant innovations. He spent almost eight yearswith the Ministry of Defense and Royal Ordnancein the U.K., developing new solid polymer rocketsfor air to air missiles. Dr. Hudd graduated with aB.Sc. Honours degree in Chemistry and Physics,M.Sc. and Ph.D. research degrees in Polymer Chem-istry from Manchester University.

Elements such as reproductiontechnology, colorant/media interaction, geomet-ric resolution, halftoning, color separation (includ-ing UCR/GCR), TRC corrections, gamut mappingwill be examined for their influence on print qual-ity. The importance of color management (includ-ing characterization and calibration) for highquality color reproduction is discussed. The in-fluence of chromatic adaptation and the viewingconditions on evaluation of the print quality ishighlighted. The role of measurement and inter-pretation of data (including gamut comparison)for color quality evaluation will be demonstrated.The importance of test and reference images isillustrated with examples.

As inkjet, dye-sub, and other types of digital photoprinters continue their expansion into mainstreammarkets, many questions are being asked abouthow the permanence of various types of digitalprints compares with that of traditional silver ha-lide color prints (which, with the rapid prolifera-tion of the Oce LightJet, Durst Lambda, FujiFrontier, and other silver halide digital photo print-ers, comprise an increasingly important compo-nent of the total digital print market). This tutorialwill give an overview of the many factors affect-ing color print permanence. Looking at a print willtell you nothing about how long it will last. At-tempting to answer the complex question, “Howlong will it last?” requires a full range of acceler-ated aging tests. The main fo-cus of his work has been on colorimetry and colormanagement; image scanning, processing and re-production with high fidelity including screeningfor optimized output quality of multi-color-images. Related products have been e.g. DC3000-Chromagraph high end drum scanners and filmrecorders as well as the PIXON technology for3D-color transformations using LUTs on CMYK/RGB data – a “pre-runner” of today’s color man-agement and in close cooperation with single in-ventors the HiFi color reproduction. Within“Linotype-Hell” (after merging with Linotype) hewas responsible for digital color correction andlater for proofer integration including technologyassessment and improvement of existing ink-jetsolutions in respect to workflow and color qualityby using ICC profiles for simulation of colorprints. After the integration of Linotype-Hell into“Heidelberger Druckmaschinen” he joined theteam for developing a new digital color printerbased on electrophotographic technology. Very little work is being conducted in the area ofnew chromophore research in the dye industry.Instead, most dye research effort is being con-ducted in the modification or “tuning” of existingdyes, or dye classes in terms of shade, solubilityand/or reactivity. The tutorial will assist the at-tendee in understanding such tuning processes.Utilizing color (in overheads and handouts), theinstructor will teach the student about color chem-istry with the aforementioned goal in mind. Start-ing with the concept of a light interacting with aprism, the instructor will guide the student froman understanding of additive and subtractive col-oration, further explaining the cause of colorationof a dye or pigment, and continuing on to the areaof structure/property (color) relationships. An un-derstanding of how one develops strategies fortuning/tailoring the shade and other physical andchemical properties of a dye will emerge through-out the course of the tutorial.

Jeff Banning is a Principal Scientist in the OfficePrinting Business Unit of Xerox, formerlyTektronix Color Printing and Imaging Division.He has worked in the areas of dye, polymer, andorganic synthesis as well as coatings and ink for-mulation at Milliken Chemicals, the BIC Corp.,Tektronix Inc., and Xerox Corp. He holds over 35U.S. patents in these areas and has scaled-up manydye intermediates and dyes, leading to many com-mercial products and several product lines. Dr.Banning began his career in color chemistry atMilliken Chemicals. It was there that he learnedthe “tricks of the trade” under many outstandingorganic dye and textile chemists, as well as withfrequent interactions with two world renown dyeconsultants: Max Weaver of Eastman Chemicals(retired) and John Griffiths of the University ofLeeds. He spent nine yearsas a member of the physics faculty at the Uni-versity of Michigan and as a visiting professorat other universities in the USA and Canada.He has 27 years of experience in the R&D ofcopiers, duplicators, printers, and digital pressesbased on electrophotography.

In his last 12 years at Xerox Corporation hewas the manager of materials technology strategyand integration: he left Xerox in March 2001, of-ficially retiring from that company in December2001. Since that time he has operated his own con-sulting business called Fingerpost Advisers whichassists clients in the digital printing business –

from materials design problems, to manufactur-ing process and work process issues, to patent is-sues, to business and market considerations, topresenting educational or training seminars onthese topics. For many years he has taught an in-troductory course in black & white and colourelectrophotography at the Diamond ResearchCorporation’s Toner & Photoreceptor annual con-ferences, as well as presenting many papers at otherconferences on associated topics. Since Japan continues to be an active center forresearch, development and marketing for non-im-pact marking technologies, travel to Japan hasbecome a routine event for many Western engi-neers, technologists and business professionalsinvolved in such technologies. However, for manyWesterners, repeated travel to Japan does not elimi-nate the strong feeling of being a foreigner in a dis-tinctly non-Western environment. Though survivalin such a foreign environment can be eased thanksto written instructions provided by thoughtful Japa-nese hosts, by willingness for Japanese counter-parts to use English as a common language, etc.,subtle cross-cultural issues still remain as causesfor unease in the Western mind.

Unfortunately, such issues tend to increase as aresult of repeated visits — gradually, an obser-vant Western visitor will begin to comprehendsome of the unwritten rules that govern life in Ja-pan, and in retrospect will appreciate just howmany social gaffes can made during initial, ca-sual visits. While such gaffes may be viewed asminor embarrassments by some Westerners, it isimportant to realize, from a working relationshipviewpoint, that Japanese hosts will evaluate West-ern visitors on the basis of such gaffes — it ishuman nature to use internal benchmarks to formopinions, and since the Japanese rules of behav-ior are significantly non-Western, there are greatopportunities for misunderstandings and errone-ous judgments. From problems with footwear,with chopsticks, with forms of verbal address, withoverall decorum, etc., the possibilities for trans-gressions seem endless, even if the "cures" are of-ten trivial. Accordingly, in my tutorial I hope thatI can provide an inside Western perspective onsome of the more baffling aspects of interactionsin a Japanese environment, and offer some point-ers for behavior that will delight and impress Japa-nese hosts and colleagues.

The course will focus on general cultural and

interpersonal topics — advanced business-orientedtopics such as Western vs. Japanese negotiationstrategies, “Japanese financial systems, Japaneselabor rules, etc., will not be covered.

Japanese nationals might also appreciate theforeigner’s view of their homeland presented inthe tutorial — such a perspective might help ex-plain some of the puzzling behavior typicallyshown by visiting foreigners.

Robert J. Nash was a xerographic researchtechnologist at the Xerox Corporation from 1970until 2001. After fifteen years of short technol-ogy-interchange visits to Japan, he finally relo-cated to Japan in 1988 for a long-term expatriateassignment. For almost three years he spent hisdays as the lone Xerox Resident at Fuji Xerox,Takematsu, while his wife steadily expanded hercircle of Japanese friends through activities suchas quilting and informal English Conversationclasses. They lived in a hybrid Japanese/Westernhouse in a totally Japanese residential area awayfrom Tokyo, and since all of their friends wereJapanese they became well-established as the lo-cal resident “foreigners”. By driving their own carsand by shopping unaided at the local shops, theywere definitely recognized as non-tourists, andconsequently were often assumed to be magicallyfluent in Japanese. Unfortunately, however, thetruth is that they were proficient enough to get
