Our old system: paper communications…- Staff had to print out or photocopy notes for a whole class or school &

distribute them

- Notes would get lost or scrunched at the bottom of the school bag

- Reply slips had to be collected and manually entered into a spreadsheet

So what we asked for was…- Paperless communication that wasn’t email

- Ability for any member of staff to create a note

- Ability to gather all replies in one place and to share them

… “any member of staff can communicate with parents?”

• SharePoint offers basic approval workflows out of the box.

• However could not be customised:

– Requires assigning special permissions to approvers

– Not possible to have unique workflows running on same item

– Not possible to have “semi-automatic” workflow trigger

– Not possible to combine serial & parallel

– No “out of office” for approvers
