NIKITA catalog summer 2012

Nikita’s artist collaborators for SS12 have provided a wild mix of prints and patterns throughout the collections, featuring in the mainline Nikita Streetwear, street couture line Nikita Selekzion and for the guys, Atikin. It’s a melting pot of creativity and includes two fine Nikita Pros, snowboard team riders Lisa Filzmoser and Magalie Dubois. Adding their skills and personality to the project, it is only the second time that a team rider has contributed in this way to the collection. From talking sharks, to birds in flight, ethnic and animal looking prints to colourful characters, the artists served up a delightful platter for you to chew on. Introducing the artists for SS12...

Magalie Dubois Summer’s Perfect Print. This Canadian firecracker has created an explosive print for the season and is destined to be most sought after. Magalie Dubois, among the colony of faithful Nikita team riders is as explosive on a snowboard too. She studied at the Académie des Arts et Design de Montréal and since the age of six been intent on being a designer. Her mum’s scarves made good dress up, especially deconstructing them into shirts! Mags gets inspired by nature and open spaces, her creative mind can run amok! Vibrant designs, strong colours and the abstract are mostly favoured and one day can be casual, the next more extravagant. Magalie completed her course in December 2010 and part of that was to complete an internship for six weeks – the Nikita HQ in Iceland was the choice and perfect timing to get stuck into working on the Summer 2012 season. Illustrator was used for the print featured in this collection, something Magalie had designed for one of her final projects at school. Produced for Heida and David to look at, it was an instant hit and translated into what can only be some key fashion pieces for the season.

NewbornPlucky. Newborn a.k.a. Essex (UK) boy Paul McDermid found his appetite for design whilst designing for student focused 5050 Magazine. The freedom allowed and ability to experiment planted a seed that quickly grew into more of a life passion. His style appears to be a lot more illustrative based, with a stronger influence on patterns and colours. Having first made a connection, Nikita then asked Paul to pitch some designs. Being a fan of Nikita’s work already it certainly wasn’t an invitation he was going to pass up. With his “Mac, tablet and a freshly brewed cuppa” Newborn’s prints include a bird’s head consisting of both feathers and leaves and a sketched acoustic guitar.

Victoria Jones Pretty Polly. Victoria graduated with a BA (Hons) in Illustration and has since combined her love for boardsports with a passion for fashion, art and graphics. A surfer herself, the collaboration seemed destined and the result can be seen in the SS12 collection. Fashion illustrator icons such as Rene Grau and Howard Tange provide inspiration and Victoria uses her documentation from travel, taking photos of surfaces, compositions, people and colours along the way as reference. Her love of nature also holds a strong fascination, particularly birds and wings, which is where the tropical parrot made a direct flight path into the Nikita collection. A design that’s both fun and colourful and perfect for summer. Victoria’s style uses lots of detail and expressive line work, mainly using the faithful pencil and watercolour for its fluidity and versatility. This parrot is sick, in the good sense!

Sathya RanjanaPowerful stuff. Raised in a small village between unaffected nature in the South of Germany, Sathya studied in Munich and Denmark. Using her surroundings, both at home and in the woods, she would experiment and transform her findings into short stories, colour combinations and drawings. Today, the influences and moods felt through nature continue to be powerful and Sathya comments that she loves “colours, shapes and surfaces you can find there…”. Her art almost takes on a life of its own and being free to express it through different mediums and tools felt right for the occasion is paramount. Sathya was passionate about travelling to Iceland, a dream since a young age, and prior to making the journey she contacted Nikita to see if they could hook up…what a great introduction and the fruits of her labour of love are evident.
