WIGAN & LEIGH COLLEGE VOCATIONAL QUALIFICATION IN ENGINEERING at LEVEL 1 Features:
Multi-Skill Engineering Programme. Based on the 3 elements of the UK’s Modern Apprentice Framework. The elements include training and assessment to achieve:
Element 1 -Vocational Standards of Competency (NVQs)
Element 2 -Under-Pinning Knowledge (Technical Certificate)
Element 3 – Key Skills Duration : 540 hours Mode of Delivery
Part-time = 2 days /week for 34 weeks (15hrs/wk) includes initial 2 week Induction Programme (30hrs/wk)
Full –time = 5 days /week for 18 weeks (30 hrs/wk) Course Content
ELEMENT 1- Practical Training consists of the following 8 units at level 1:Unit 1 Industrial Workshop Safety
Unit 2 Industrial Workshop Practice
Unit 3 Industrial Technical Communication
Unit 4 Basic Mechanical Fitting Skills
Unit 5 Basic Electrical Wiring Skills
Unit 6 Basic Welding Skills
Unit 7 Basic Motor Vehicle Maintenance Skills
Unit 8 Basic Sheet Metal Work
ELEMENT 2 -Technical Training is designed to achieve the necessary underpinning knowledge and understanding for each of the above units.

Off –the- Job Training: Emphasis on ‘Industrial Training’ 37.5 hours /week
(8.00am-4.00pm) 80% practical 20% theory 9 units at Level 2 (4 general+ 5 specialist) Award = Wigan and Leigh College Vocational Qualification
in Engineering at Level 2 On -the -Job Training/Assessment : 9 units at Level 3 Units selected by employer with guidance from NIIT from a large
bank to match the job role of the trainee and the assessment opportunities available
