The Divis ion o f Research Grants ( D R G ) i s p leased t o announce i t s Science wScholars Program. A small number of s e n i o r s c i e n t i s t s from o u t s i d e t h e Federa l Government w i l l have t h e oppor tuni ty t o p a r t i c i p a t e i n ana lyses o f extramural s c i e n t i f i c merit review, i n p o l i c y eva lua t ion , and i n t h e formulat ion of recommendations for DRG. Science s c h o l a r s w i l l work i n DRG on short- term assignments, from 3 t o 6 months.

ELIGIBILITY: Appl icants f o r t h e Science Scholars Program may be b a s i c or app l i ed s c i e n t i s t s or c l i n i c i a n s . They must, however, have had ex tens ive biomedical or behaviora l r e sea rch experience and must have served on a DRG Study Sec t ion o r equiva len t N I H i n i t i a l review group.

CONTENT OF PROGRAM: Science s c h o l a r s w i l l be involved i n eva lua t ions and ana lyses o f peer review practices and t r e n d s us ing a v a r i e t y o f s t a t i s t i c a l da tabases and r e sources . It is expected t h a t t h e Scholars w i l l a l s o confer widely with N I H s t a f f and c o n s u l t a n t s . Program P r o j e c t s on t h e Biology o f t h e Immune System rep resen t an award mechanism which t h e Branch has employed t o meet t h i s o b j e c t i v e . They are intended t o support i n t e g r a t e d , m u l t i d i s c i p l i n a r y , b a s i c s t u d i e s of immunologically-functional lymphocyte and o t h e r r e l e v a n t ce l l popula t ions . Th i r t een such program p r o j e c t s a r e c u r r e n t l y funded al though support f o r two is scheduled t o conclude i n 1988. This r eques t f o r a p p l i c a t i o n s i s intended t o encourage t h e development of proposa ls from c o l l a b o r a t i n g i n v e s t i g a t o r s and t o coord ina te t h e submission and review of new and renewal program p r o j e c t a p p l i c a t i o n s .

RESEARCH GOALS AND SCOPE

The goa l of t h e s e Program P r o j e c t s is t h e a t ta inment of a completeunderstanding of t h e s t r u c t u r e and func t ion o f t h e immune system and i ts products , i t s i n t e r a c t i o n with o t h e r body systems, and f u l l knowledge o f t h e g e n e t i c and o t h e r f a c t o r s which r e g u l a t e i ts development and func t ion . An u l t i m a t e p r a c t i c a l a p p l i c a t i o n o f t h i s information is t h e use of s e l e c t e d cloned ce l l s o f t h e system, o r t h e i r products , f o r t h e c l i n i c a l c a r e o f r e c o n s t i t u t i o n o f immunodeficient i nd iv idua l s , t o a l l e v i a t e a l l e r g i c s ta tes , t o provide r e s i s t a n c e t o l i f e - t h r e a t e n i n g i n f e c t i o n s and t o c o r r e c t abe r ran t o r d e f e c t i v e immunoregulatory mechanisms.

The scope o f t h e s e program p r o j e c t s i nc ludes s t u d i e s of every facet o f t h e immune response, ranging from t h e i n i t i a l s t e p o f an t igen r ecogn i t ion t o t h e f i n a l e l a b o r a t i o n o f immunologically d i s t i n c t i v e products o f s p e c i f i cimmunocytes. Research c u r r e n t l y supported by t h i s mechanism was designed t o expand knowledge o f t h e morphologic and f u n c t i o n a l he te rogenei ty o f lymphocytepopula t ions and develop t h e c a p a b i l i t y f o r i d e n t i f i c a t i o n and s e l e c t i o n of lymphocyte subpopulat ions, with s p e c i f i c immune r e a c t i v i t y o r molecular composition, f o r use i n somatic h y b r i d i z a t i o n o f such popula t ions and s e l e c t i v e product ion o f s p e c i f i c , b i o l o g i c a l l y a c t i v e , lymphocyte products .S imi l a r s t u d i e s of macrophages, o t h e r accessory and e f f e c t o r c e l l s , and networks o f ce l l s and molecules t h a t a f f e c t t h e a c t i v a t i o n , d i f f e r e n t i a t i o n and r e g u l a t i o n of c e l l s o f t h e immune system are appropr i a t e . P r o j e c t s t h a t involve improving t h e e f f i c i e n c y o r s c a l e o f prepar ing and s e l e c t i n ghybridomas and o t h e r r e l e v a n t c e l l l i n e s f o r def ined purposes, and p r o j e c t sdesigned t o modify genes encoding immunologically r e l evan t macromolecules t o improve t h e i r b i o l o g i c a l e f f i c i e n c y , o r d i a g n o s t i c and t h e r a p e u t i c u t i l i t y , are encouraged.

MECHANISM OF SUPPORT

Program p r o j e c t g r a n t s a r e awarded t o an i n s t i t u t i o n on behal f o f a programd i r e c t o r f o r t h e support o f a broadly based, m u l t i d i s c i p l i n a r y , long-termresea rch program which has a s p e c i f i c major o b j e c t i v e o r b a s i c theme. A program p r o j e c t g e n e r a l l y involves t h e organized e f f o r t s of groups o f i n v e s t i g a t o r s who conduct r e sea rch p r o j e c t s r e l a t e d t o t h e o v e r a l l programo b j e c t i v e . The g r a n t can provide support f o r t h e p r o j e c t s and f o r c e r t a i n c o r e r e sources shared by ind iv idua l s where t h e sha r ing f a c i l i t a t e s t h e t o t a l r e sea rch e f f o r t . Each component p r o j e c t , supported under a program p r o j e c t g r a n t , is expected t o c o n t r i b u t e and be d i r e c t l y r e l a t e d t o a common theme. The p r o j e c t s should demonstrate an e s s e n t i a l element of u n i t y and interdependence. A t least two awards are planned f o r 1988.

RESEARCH GOALS AND SCOPE

I n s t i t u t i o n a l animal resource improvement p r o j e c t s are awarded t o assist '1-d biomedical r e sea rch and educa t iona l i n s t i t u t i o n s i n t h e upgrading of t h e i r

animal f a c i l i t i e s and i n t h e development of c e n t r a l i z e d animal c a r e programs.A major o b j e c t i v e is t o enable i n s t i t u t i o n s t o comply with t h e USDA Animal Welfare A c t and DHHS p o l i c i e s on t h e care and t rea tment of animals . These awards are l i m i t e d t o a l t e r a t i o n s and renovat ions (A&R) t o improve l a b o r a t o r yanimal f a c i l i t i e s and r e l a t e d major resource equipment such as animal cagesand cage washers. A l l o f t h e s e areas need not be developed t o t h e same degree. However, a s t r o n g base o f biomedical r e sea rch is t h e most important func t ion of a c e n t e r . Accordingly, a program of exce l l ence i n biomedical r e sea rch i n t h e area o f d i a b e t e s and r e l a t e d metabol ic and endocrine d i s o r d e r s i n t h e form o f NIH-funded r e sea rch p r o j e c t s , program p r o j e c t s , or o t h e r peer-reviewed r e sea rch must be i n ex i s t ence a t t h e t i m e of submission of a Center a p p l i c a t i o n . Close cooperat ion, communication, and c o l l a b o r a t i o n among a l l involved personnel o f a l l p r o f e s s i o n a l d i s c i p l i n e s are u l t i m a t e o b j e c t i v e s . The DRTCs a r e based on t h e core concept .
