Over the last few months I have been spending a lot of hours on thewater chasing mangrove jack at night. Jacks are a very smart fish and inSEQ (southeast Queensland) can be quite hard to catch at timesbecause of the amount of boat traffic. This is the main reason we fish atnight, when there are less boats on the water. Big flathead, tailor, tarpon, jewfish, trevally and cod are the most common by-catch that we comeacross when fishing for mangrove jack.

Mangrove jack will hang around bridges, logs, jetties, pontoons, flats, back eddies and anywhere that there is some sort of structure. Myfavourite place to target them though is on rock bars. The rock bars thatwe fish vary in depth from 1m - 5m and some stretch for a long length ofthe river, while others are small patches of rock and rubble.

I like to use the ‘spot lock’ function on the Minn Kota electric motor toposition the boat down current of the chosen area and cast back up, sothat I can work the lure back to the boat with the tide. Although therearen’t too many secret spots left in the rivers anymore, I try to work outwhich spots are receiving the least amount of fishing pressure at the timeand fish these spots. People will often forget about spots that may havefished well many years ago, when they actually still hold good numbers offish.

A quality jack onthe measure.

Page 4: Night Jacks Bass in the Sticks Jigging The Soft Optiontackletactics.com.au/emagassets/49_TackleTacticsFishingEMag_37.… · Bass, on their day, will take a range of different lures

Another great option is to fish under the bigeye trevally schools. To locatethem, look for bust ups in areas that normally hold a lot of bait. By usinglarger plastics and sinking them underneath the bigeye trevs, you cancome across anything from big trevally and tailor, to barra and jacks. These bigger fish follow the bigeye schools around and wait for scraps ofbaitfish to sink down from the fish feeding on the surface.

I find the week before the full moon to be the most productive, howeverspending a lot of time on the water is the most important thing in terms ofhelping you to get to know what is going on in your river system at thetime. I believe that the more time you spend on the water, the more you’lllearn about jacks or any other species that you are targeting.

The run out tide is normally the best and when I catch the majority of myjacks, although they do feed on the run in, just not as aggressively. BeforeI go fishing for the night, I try to plan a few spotsthat I will fish, the time of night I will fish them andhow long for, depending on the tides. Normally anhour is long enough to know if the spot is fishingwell. I always arrive at my first spot an hourbefore dark and try to go somewhere at this timewhere I will have a chance at other species aswell as jacks, including trevally, tailor, tarpon, grunter, jewfish etc., because these fish feed bestin the last and first hour of daylight.

The gear I use when targeting jacks can be anything from 6lb - 30lb,depending on structure and current. Although it’s not what most peoplewould use, I mostly use my lightest set ups which consist of a 1-4kg rodand a 1000 size reel loaded with 6-10lb braid and 12-20b leader. Thereason I use such light gear is because I believe that it gives you the splitsecond advantage at the start of the fight, where fish have not realisedthey have been hooked. It gives you a small time frame to get the first fewwinds on the fish and turn its head. I have found that when using aheavier rod, the jack seem to run a lot harder in the first stage of the fightand although you may have more pulling power, if a big jack is inchesfrom a hole in the oyster encrusted rocks, chances are it’s going to runyou straight into it. On a light rod the jack just don't seem to run in thestart of the fight, but once you get them a metre or two away from thebottom they then try to run back down. With the right knots and dragsettings they can normally be stopped.

If you want to give your bream gear a good stretch on the jacks, a goodknot is essential. The knot I use is an FG Knot, which I believe is thestrongest knot out there. They are quite difficult to learn and take somepractice to get perfect, but are worth the effort. Having such a strong knotmeans that you can have confidence in running a fully locked drag whenfishing really tight structure on light gear for jacks.

Jacks love huntingin low light.

The other setups that Iuse, when fishing biggerlures or heavier leadersare 3000 size reels, 4-8kg rods, 15-30lb braidand 20-30lb leaders. Most of the ZMan rangeof plastics will catchjacks at different times, however the ones that Ihave had most successon include the ZMan 4”SwimmerZ rigged on a3/8oz 4/0 TT LuresHeadlockZ HD jighead,

ZMan 4” Scented ShrimpZ in New Penny colour rigged on a 1/4oz 4/0HeadlockZ HD jighead, ZMan 3” MinnowZ in Gold Rush and Calico Candycolours, rigged on either a 1/4oz or 3/8oz 3/0 DemonZ jighead in GoldenBoy colour and a ZMan 5” GrubZ in Copper Penny colour rigged on a3/8oz 4/0 HeadlockZ HD jighead. I always use a small amount of Pro-CureMullet Super Gel on the ZMan.

The techniques that I use are always different, depending on the area, depth of water and strength of tide. I also mix up the techniques each cast,so that I can work out what is working on that particular night. I find thatmost of the time an aggressive retrieve normally works best with thepaddle tails, while I use a slower retrieve for the ShrimpZ and GrubZ. Withthe MinnowZ and SwimmerZ, anything from one big aggressive hop to sixsmall hops can work, with my favourite retrieve being two big, fast hops, with a pause long enoughfor the lure to hit thebottom. When using theShrimpZ I use just a slowroll along the bottom, withthe odd lift every now andagain. When fishing the 5”GrubZ, one or two long liftsfollowed by a large pauseworks quite well, especiallywhen the fish are beingfinicky.

In my boat I have twolarge live wells that arevery useful whentargeting jacks. I havefound that jacks willfeed in bite periods andyou might catch nothingfor an hour, then catchtwo or three in a fewminutes. This is wherethe live wells are souseful. Once we catchone, we put it straightinto the live well and getback to fishing. Thismeans that instead ofwasting time gettingphotos we can keepfishing and normally geta few fish (or bust-offs)in a short space of time.Once the bite hasslowed down or we areleaving the spot, we goand get photos andthen release them.

I always check all of thecamera settings areright before getting thejacks out of the live wellto take photos, ensuringthat they are out of thewater for the minimallength of time. Jacksare great fun as a sportfish and I always enjoytaking care and timewhen releasing them tomake sure they swimoff healthy.

The sights and sounds of the Australian bush are something that is hardto describe unless you are lucky enough to spend some time out thereappreciating what we have. The treasured memories from a trip gone byare something never far from my thoughts, along with planning when thenext trip might be, if I will take a mate or spend some time out with family, where am I going to go and what fish are going to be the intended target.

Targeting Australian bass from my kayak is where I have been spendingmost of my available fishing time, especially over the past two years.Whether it is to the north or southwest of my home on the Gold Coast orjust a twenty-minute drive to my local dam, I love it all. The scenery inthese of locations is just amazing. Fishing from the kayak is a veryaddictive and challenging way to fish. There are plenty of advantages tothis style of fishing, including access to remote areas where a boatcannot be launched and also quite often the amount wildlife seen whenquietly working through areas is very surprising.

Deep rocky creeks running along the bases of tall overhanging cliffs, fallen timber logs and trees on the edges of fast flowing crystal clearwater, rocky outcrops in the middle of the river, grassy covered deepedges and forest-like sections of large standing timber are just some ofthe landscapes encountered. All of these mentioned areas are a greatplace to spend a few hours… or days investigating.

Bass inhabitsome magiclocations.

Page 10: Night Jacks Bass in the Sticks Jigging The Soft Optiontackletactics.com.au/emagassets/49_TackleTacticsFishingEMag_37.… · Bass, on their day, will take a range of different lures

When visiting fishing locations in searchof new ground, or even areas you havefished before, it can be very difficult tolocate consistent numbers of fish. Floodsin affected areas, long dry periods withoutrain, storm damage, weed build up andwater clarity are just some of theobstacles to consider and these each addto the addictive challenge.

Targeting bass can be very tough whenthe barometer is low and when theweather conditions are not in your favour, including if the area is in flood or drought, however in recent times the trips awayand even the local weather has beenfairly consistent and allowed for somegreat fish to be caught.

Bass, on their day, will take a range ofdifferent lures but there are a fewstandouts that have been working reallywell, are consistent fish catchers and myconfidence lures. These include the rangeof available spinnerbaits and addedattractants, such as a Jig Spinner addedto your jighead along with Pro-Curescent.

Morning and afternoon are peak bite timesand awesome times to be on the water.

Page 11: Night Jacks Bass in the Sticks Jigging The Soft Optiontackletactics.com.au/emagassets/49_TackleTacticsFishingEMag_37.… · Bass, on their day, will take a range of different lures

The TT Vortex range of spinnerbaits are fantastic as they are designedwith a small frame that is aimed at species such as bass, golden perch, saratoga and many others. Being a smaller profile spinnerbait doesn’tmean that they won’t stand up to heavier by-catch that you may comeacross such as cod and hard hitting golden perch. Vortex spinnerbaits arebuild on a strong Mustad chemically sharpened hook and fitted with a ballbearing swivel, nickel (silver) and 24k gold-plated blades. There are morethan a dozen different colours to choose from and the weights range from1/8oz right through to 3/4oz, meaning you can cover the skinniest waterfor bass, right out to deep schooling dam fish.

With such a range of colours and sizes it can be a tough decision in termsof where to start. The sizes that I normally find cover a large range of myfishing are the 3/8oz and 1/2oz weights. Fire Tiger is a standout colour forme, along with the Purple Nightmare, White Bony, Purple Blue Scale andthe Chartreuse Olive, which are all producing fish.

Some of the features that make spinnerbaits so effective include theircastability, excellent snag resistance, great flash and vibration… andsimply they just work!

Fire Tiger is one of Jay’sgo-to colours in the Vortex.

Page 12: Night Jacks Bass in the Sticks Jigging The Soft Optiontackletactics.com.au/emagassets/49_TackleTacticsFishingEMag_37.… · Bass, on their day, will take a range of different lures

With bass being an aggressive sportfish, a hard hitting and a dirty fightingfish that never gives up, this is where spinnerbaits come into their own.Quite often in the areas that I fish for bass there will be heavy timber oranother form of heavy structure. With the snag resistance of thespinnerbait and great castability it is easier to work your lure in productiveareas with less worry about snagging up and losing your lure.Another very worthwhileaddition to your tackle boxis the TT Jig Spinner. TheJig Spinner can be easilyattached to your jighead, adding extra flash andvibration to your lure andthis can often turn a toughbite into a reaction bite. TheJig Spinner also allowsyour plastic to swing freelyat the tow point and willhelp with snag resistance.

Jig Spinners can make adifference when the fish areshut down or feeding onsmaller bait, where a plasticcan also be downsized if needbe. There are three sizes in therange, to suit your plastic ofchoice, available in both nickel(silver) and 24k gold-platedColorado blade finishes.

A really great plastic option tomatch the Jig Spinner to is theever-reliable ZMan 3”MinnowZ. There is a hugerange of colours available andthe MinnowZ has a realisticbody roll and swimming actionthat represents a small bait fishvery closely. This is why it issuch a great producer.

Pinfish, Houdini, Mood Ring,Space Guppy and Motor Oilare all great colours to startwith. Normally in cleaner waterconditions and early morningsI tend to stick with the naturalcolours, like the Pinfish andHoudini. In overcast or dirtywater the Mood Ring andMotor Oil seem to stand out asgreat fish catchers. During theheat of the day, when the sunis high and shade is hard tocome by, the bright colour ofthe Space Guppy MinnowZhas produced a few crackingfish as well. Attach a JigSpinner and you normallycannot go wrong.

Adding scent to your spinnerbaits and soft plastics can also change atough session into a memorable one. Pro-Cure scents have a great rangeof flavours to suit a large range of fishing applications. Shrimp is one thatcomes to mind and is always with me, but all of the flavours in the rangehave their place.

Planning a couple of nights away with mates, a solo session in your localarea or a family trip off the beatentrack are all styles of fishing that arevery special. Listening to the sound ofa crackling camp fire, enjoying a colddrink, listening to water lapping upagainst your kayak, birds singing inthe trees, fish feeding in thedistance… it sure beats the sound ofthe hustle and bustle of the busycoastal areas.

Stripping back your gear to whatever will fit in a couple of boxes in yourkayak really makes you assess what tackle you take with the limitedavailable space. With conditions changing regularly in rivers and dams itis really important that you take the gear that you’re confident in to getyou the results. Fishing spinnerbaits and Jig Spinner rigged plastics isdefinitely an exciting way to target bass and a consistent producer.

Hopefully these couple of suggestions will help point you in the rightdirection next time you are thinking about a trip away or a session on yourlocal targeting our beautiful native fish.

By no means is this article a ‘how to catch bass’ write up, just sharing afew tips from my experiences and a few lures that have producedconsistently in recent times, while also sharing some of my experiencesfishing out of the kayak.

REMOTE ISLANDADVENTURE

Page 17: Night Jacks Bass in the Sticks Jigging The Soft Optiontackletactics.com.au/emagassets/49_TackleTacticsFishingEMag_37.… · Bass, on their day, will take a range of different lures

Clear skies and calm seas, theperfect combination for theanticipation of the three day’sadventure and fishing that layahead. Jerry cans, campinggear, rods and esky packedfull of supplies and weseamlessly rolled down theboat ramp into the water.

We plotted our journey into theGPS; destination exploratorymission to the Marble IslandGroup. With the motorengaged at full throttle, themainland shrunk behind us. Asthe islands in front started togrow, I always have a hugesmile… leaving civilization withthat simple feeling of completefreedom, no boat traffic orpeople in this part of the world.

The forecast for our three day window of weather opportunity was for 5-10 knot SSE conditions and as we passed Roundish Island, in theseglassy variable winds, you could begin to appreciate how untouched andunexplored the Broadsound really is. In the distance I could spot ourhalfway destination, Wild Duck Island, on our 80 km journey.

I could definitely make out a stationery large shape on the surface, about10km ahead and as we approached I couldn’t believe a female humpbackwhale had recently given birth, her baby beside her and seemingly

teaching the newborn tosurface and breath. Wow!They stayed on the surfacefor a few candid photos forus, magic! We soondiscovered that theBroadsound, with itssheltered islands andshallow waters, is quite anursery for numerous whalepods.

Let the journey begin…

It’s not just about the fishing.

Page 18: Night Jacks Bass in the Sticks Jigging The Soft Optiontackletactics.com.au/emagassets/49_TackleTacticsFishingEMag_37.… · Bass, on their day, will take a range of different lures

Beautiful Wild Duck Island, with its spectacular long white sandy beachesand a tidal range of 7 metres from high to low, is a green zone. Ourdestination has deeper water which lies around the marble islands. Reefedges, coral bommies and deep drop offs, around 5-20 metres, with lotsof water movement. Situated 30km from Stanage Bay, our camp spotbecame visible and with a hundred metre high ridge around the island, and a horseshoe stretch of sand below, it’s protected from most winds. This made an ideal place to set up camp, as we motored into the crystalwaters on half tide. We engaged wheels down, the sand looked firm andwe exited the water, driving up the beach to a spot near a shady tree.

Not a bad homeaway from home.

Page 19: Night Jacks Bass in the Sticks Jigging The Soft Optiontackletactics.com.au/emagassets/49_TackleTacticsFishingEMag_37.… · Bass, on their day, will take a range of different lures

Mossy, Robbie and I unloaded quickly inanticipation of rigging up our weapons of choice, from 4000 to 8000s, with 20-50lb braid, rigged witha diverse array of tackle, ranging from largepoppers and shads, to StreakZ and micro jigs. Wewanted to fish half tide to low, just around the NWedge, where coral bommies in 3-6 metres of waterintercepted the drop off zone and current line. Thishad to be a great starting point to explore close tocamp.

Mossy began working the edge of the coral, casting hard up near the rocks, hopping through the water column andworking back into the open water. Rob concentrated on throwing poppersinto the current line and I dropped my TT Vector, jigging the coral below.

Boom! Mossy nearly fell out of the boat, as line peeled at a screamingrate. He managed to steer the fish out of the danger zone as we drifted tomore open water. His rod was seriously bent, giving the 4000 Stella and20lb braid a good workout. Half an hour later, after a lengthy chase, 1kmfrom where we began, Mossy retrieved most of his line and the fish wasfinally starting to tire. Success! Landing a cracking 20kg+ GT on a ZMan5” StreakZ in Electric Chicken colour.

As the sun began to fadebehind us Rob cast into theshallow coral bombies, retrieving a nice coral troutthat would become dinnerover the hot coals that night. There are such a diversearray of species here, fromdart, coral trout and cod, toqueenies, mackerel, barracuda and trevally. Aftera delicious dinner by thecampfire, a few drinks laterit was time to sleep underthe stars and to dream ofthe day’s fishing ahead.

As dawn arrived we were upcooking our usual baconand egg burgers and acuppa, now ready andfuelled to go further afieldfor a full day’s fishing. Ourmain objective for this tripwas to do some soundingand exploring of thegrounds within a 10kmradius of our base, as areference for future tripswith longer weatherwindows.

A mixed bag of reefies andpelagics were on offer..

Ahhhh the serenity…

Approaching a steep rockyoutcrop with surface actionapparent, my first cast into thefrenzy produced a mac tuna, caught on a 40g TT Vector jig, fast burning along the surface. With half tide waning we fishedalong the coral edges, mainlycatching cod, trout and trevally.Luring them from their shallowlairs using an assortment oflures, from ZMan 5” StreakZ toZMan 7” Scented Jerk ShadZ,even throwing in a 10” HeroZ.

As we were drifting off the northern side there was a distinct 3-12m ledge, with the current roaring around the tip. I started hopping a 1 1/2oz TTHeadlockZ HD jighead and 5” Bubble Gum coloured StreakZ combo onthe lee side. Three hops later, smashed I’m on! It was a solid hook upwith some serious head shakes. About now I wished I had 40lb braidinstead of 20lb. A few minutes of tug of war and I could see colour. Robcalled it for a large queenie, but it ended up being my PB golden trevallyand my turn to get fish of the day.

The next day we wereup early and with achange in weatherforecast we decidedto leave on the hightide to fish a frequentstopover closer tohome. We arrived withfavourable tides, anhour up our sleeve tofish a rock bar andgroin, masses of baitand an outgoing tide. This spot frequentlyproduces barra andfingermark.

Armed with the go-toZMan 4” SwimmerZ inPearl and ZMan 3”Scented ShrimpZ inGlow, Rob’s secondcast landed an 80cmbarra, a clear waterheadland fish full ofchrome. Mossy and Imanaged a couple ofnice fingermark and asmall barra to top offthe trip. As the tidestarted to drain off therock bar, time wasnow of the essenceand we started thefinal 35km leg of ourtrip.

Like all trips, timeseemed to fly and wewere already planningthe next trip out there! Sue and Robbie’s original Sealegs,

SURFACEBASSIN’

By Erinn Ball

Page 25: Night Jacks Bass in the Sticks Jigging The Soft Optiontackletactics.com.au/emagassets/49_TackleTacticsFishingEMag_37.… · Bass, on their day, will take a range of different lures

There is nothing I love more than walking a small, skinny water creek insearch of a healthy Australian bass. What attracts me to this style offishing is that you don’t need a fancy boat or kayak, just your feet and amind open to exploring. Armed with this the land based fishing optionsare endless. Targeting bass in the skinny water can be physicallydemanding as the terrain you are fishing can be quite a challenge. I oftenhave to fight my way down large embankments, over trees and throughcreeks… however it can be beautiful at the same time. Quite often it isjust you and the surrounding wildlife; lizards, birds and the dreadedsnake!

When it comes to fishing for bass in skinny water locations, everyone hastheir own favourite techniques that work for them, whether it is castingspinnerbaits, hard bodies or soft plastics. My go-to technique happens tobe targeting them via the surface and I often hear people saying thatsurface lures are only good early morning or late afternoon. I happen todisagree with this statement when it comes to skinny water fishing and Ioften have my top bite periods during the middle of the day. Bass in thissort of country are opportunists as food can regularly become quitescarce, with limited rainfall causing pools to become shut off from oneanother. Due to the fact that food can become limited, I find that Bass arewilling to eat a surface lure anytime of the day as it could potentially bethe only possible meal for a while. ZMan plastics make for fantasticsurface lures as they are naturally buoyant which means you can fishthem slowly without having to worry about them sinking.

Bass country…

Page 26: Night Jacks Bass in the Sticks Jigging The Soft Optiontackletactics.com.au/emagassets/49_TackleTacticsFishingEMag_37.… · Bass, on their day, will take a range of different lures

As the ZMan range is so big and forever expanding, my list of favouritelures is reasonably large. I usually like a lure that is quite large in size…in fact people would often say that it is too big. I like to keep my lures inthe 3” to 5” size range. My top 3 go-to lures are:

ZMan 3” Minnowz (Pearl, Red Shad, Opening Night or Golden Boy)

This particular lure is the one that I like to use the most. I like to rig it on a2/0 TT Lures ChinlockZ jighead, as it keeps the lure completely weedlessand with the lure being weedless I am then able to cast it into heavystructure without having to worry about it getting snagged up. The greatbenefit of this setup is that it casts like a bullet, allowing you to cover a lotof ground with a single cast. It also skips very well, making it great forusing around overhanging trees and or branches. This is also when Ireceive most of the hits.

I often just use a very simple medium paced retrieve, with little to nopauses. The paddle tail on the MinnowZ creates a great wake in thewater and the bass find it irresistible. For a little bit of extra attraction I liketo dab a small amount of Pro-Cure Shrimp Super Gel on the lure.

One of Erinn’s go-to surfaceplastics, the ZMan 3” MinnowZ.

Page 27: Night Jacks Bass in the Sticks Jigging The Soft Optiontackletactics.com.au/emagassets/49_TackleTacticsFishingEMag_37.… · Bass, on their day, will take a range of different lures

ZMan 4” Pop Shadz (Pearl or Watermelon Chartreuse)

This particular lure is the one that secured me my PB 54cm skinny waterbass. The Pop ShadZ doesn’t only make for a great popping lure, it isalso a great ‘walk the dog’ lure. With a steady wind and small rod twitchthis lure turns into a very impressive stickbait. It also makes for afantastic casting lure as it’s a little heavier than other plastics, while stillhaving a very streamline profile that is great for casting long distances. The Pop ShadZ is best rigged on a 3/0 TT Lures ChinlockZ jighead, onceagain making the lure weedless.

Another victim of theZMan 3” MinnowZ.

ZMan 4” StreakzCurly Tailz(Red Shad andPearl)

I also find that theCurly TailZ workmost effectivelywhen they arerigged on a 3/0 TTLures Chinlockzjighead and I like toskip a cast into andunder over hangingtrees. The retrieve Iuse is a littledifferent, comparedto the otherplastics, as I like toimplement a lot ofpauses andtwitches into thisparticular lure. Byimplementing apause and twitchaction into the lure, the tail of the lurecreates a spittingaction across thesurface and in turnleaves a greatwake.

LocationsFinding a great skinny water bass location takes a lot of time and effort. The theory that I have is, if it is hard to get to then potentially the locationmay be relatively untouched and therefore possibly fish better.

Websites, such as Google Maps, NearMap and Google Earth, are greattools to use when you are trying to find creeks that will hold bass. Simplyzoom in on the creek and begin searching. Key things to look for whensearching maps are spillways, bridges, colour changes in the water fromfresh to salt, possible structure to fish and entry points.

Don’t think that you can only target bass in strictly fresh water. I oftentarget bass in water that is so brackish that I see other species, such asbull sharks, bream and mangrove jack, swimming amongst the structure. At times there won’t be an entry point, so you may have to make yourown and don’t be surprised if you get to a location and there happens tobe no water in the creek. This is all part of the fun when it comes tofinding the perfect location.

Talking to the locals is a great way to find out information and this canpossibly lead to new locations and even access to private properties. When I enter a new town, that I stop in to use the local facilities, such asservos, I have gained some fantastic locations just by talking to peopleand mentioning that I am in town to fish. I often get the response of “youshould try here” or “I have a friend that owns a property on the creek” andthis gives you a fantastic starting point. Of course safety comes first, so ifit seems weird or unusual then best you keep on driving.

Weedless rigging allows youto fish almost anywhere.

As I often fish by myself, safety to me is more important than catching afish. I always have a first aid kit in the very front pocket of my pack, whereit is easily accessible in case of an emergency. I also carry plenty ofwater, extra snacks and a phone with maps or a GPS in case I happen toget lost. Most importantly, as to if you were going fishing out at sea, is Ialways tell a family member, friend or even neighbour where I am going.

TackleI like to take two rod and reel options, one being a spin and the otherbeing a baitcast combo. For my spin combo I generally use a 1000 sizereel and 7 foot, 2-6lb rod, with 6lb braid. On my baitcast combo I like torun a heavier rod with heavier braid as this allows me to set the hooks alittle quicker and turn the fish’s head to drag it out of the snag. I like to runa 6-10lb rod and 12lb braid. With heavier braid on this reel it thenbecomes more versatile, ready for when I want to target other speciessuch as saratoga. On both of these combos I like to run a rod length ofeither 6lb or 10lb leader, connected to my braid using either an FG Knotor the Slim Beauty.

I encourage everyone to get into the bush and experience skinny waterbass fishing just once, then you will be hooked… The strikes from fish insuch small creeks will automatically see you searching for more. Don’t gointo a session expecting to absolutely slay the fish as it may just nothappen. It might take a couple of sessions to fine tune your skills beforeyou nail that one surfacebass. Just remember a badday fishing is better than agood day at work.

Step 4 - Thehook will nowlay against theside of the plastic. Bendthe tail section of the plasticup a little to make it easier to push the hookpoint straight through from the end of theunderside rigging channel out through therigging channel on top of the plastic.

RIGGING - 4” Pop ShadZZMan’s revolutionary 10X Tough, ElaZtech soft plastic popper is now available in a 4” version, theperfect floating bite-size snack for bass, mangrove jack, barra, trevally, cod, saratoga, pelagicspecies and more. Pop it, walk it, pause it, BOOF! Fish on!

Weedless rigging on a TT Lures 3/0 ChinlockZhead allows you to cast this soft popper over, into and through structure in search of fish…areas where you would never have been ablecast a standard popper. It floats, responds wellto various retrieves, feels soft and realistic andfish love it!

Step 1 - Tie on your TT3/0 ChinlockZ jighead.Thread it through thecentre of the cup faceand and out behind thegill plates on theunderside of the PopShadZ.

Step 2 - Pull the hookthrough until youreach the silver ‘chinlock’ and then slowlypull the ‘chin lock’through the plastic.

Step 3 - As the ‘chinlock’ exits theunderside of theplastic it will lock inplace and the hookwill turn to face pointup.

Step 5 - Pull the hook point and barb downagainst the top of the plastic to minimisesnagging and fouling. The hook will keel andright the plastic from the cast so it alwaysswims true and you can cast it virtuallyanywhere. Fish on!

Rigging for Open WaterThe Pop ShadZ is also deadly in open waterand if you’re not worried about snagging orfouling it can simply be rigged with a treble orstandard straight shank hook (J hook).

Step 1 - Use step 1 ofweedless rigging, butpull the hook rightthrough the plastic sothat your leaderenters the cup faceand comes out underthe gill plates.Step 2 - Cut off theChinlockZ or ‘J’ hookand tie on a treblehook to suit.Step 3 - Secure oneof the treble arms upinto the riggingchannel. The shank ofthe treble will lay inthe rigging channel.Pull your leader backthrough the plastic.Step 4 - You nowhave two hook pointsexposed for openwater fishing andenough weight forcasting.

MANGROVEBREAMING

On the eastern side of St Vincent Gulf in SA, just north of Adelaide, is thestart of the northern tidal flats that stretch up the coast to the very end ofthe gulf. The shoreline of the flats are lined with mangroves and a fewnice size creeks that are home to some extra large bream that love snagsand ZMan plastics.

These creeks are extremely tidal and full of man eating mozzies. Pickingthe right tides to fish them is essential as the current from rising andfalling tides can bring a lot of weed, making fishing near impossible attimes. An accurate cast is also essential or you will lose plenty of gear totrees and snags.

With plenty of bait fish and places to hide, the bream love it in thesecreeks and the creeks are perfect for kayak fishing for the bream. Thishas to be one of my favourite ways to fish. There are plenty of snags inthese creeks and a stealthy approach, casting all around the snags, willnormally attract a look at by a hungry fish.

Prime bream terrain…mangroves.

The gear that I use whenchasing these light linebruisers is a 5 to 12lb DaiwaHarrier rod and a DaiwaSteez 2508, loaded with10lb Sunline Castaway braidand 6lb FC Rock leader. Thefirst of the TT jigheads that Ichoose to use for this style offishing is the TT 1/28oz HWS(Hidden Weight System)for when the tide is slowingdown to the bottom of the

tide and for the first hour after the change. As the tide increases I willchange to a TT HeadlockZ 1/20oz jighead. Being a bit heavier it will dropat around the same speed as the 1/28oz through the moving water andstay in the bream’s face, hopefully long enough for them to hit it and hookup.

These mangroves are unforgiving to lures, so I choose not to flick $30hard bodies at these fish… a few bad casts and you have lost someserious $$$. ZMan plastics are the best for this way of fishing as they arecheap to buy and a packet will last you quite a few trips if your casting isaccurate.

A solid handful ofmangrove bream.

I’m an angler that won’t change something if it works. The ZMan 2.5”GrubZ work and they work extremely well. In the creeks that I fish thebream are all over the colours Motor Oil, Bloodworm and WatermelonRed and matched with the aforementioned TT jigheads I don’t think youcan go wrong.

The way that I fish the 2.5” GrubZ involves a lot of skipping them in underthe overhanging mangrove branches, into some very touch and go spotsas that’s where the fish are. As the plastic sinks, watch the line sinkingback toward you. If you see it move or even the slightest touch, that’s abream grabbing it on the drop as it floats past them.

You must hook the fish and quickly get them away from where they aresitting or they will have you busted off in a second. Positioning the yak ina good place first, before you cast, helps a lot and having your drag setright plays a big part in this, allowing enough pressure on the fish withoutbreaking your light leaders.

Motor Oil colour isa favourite colourfor bream.

Another victim of theZMan 2.5” GrubZ.

Page 36: Night Jacks Bass in the Sticks Jigging The Soft Optiontackletactics.com.au/emagassets/49_TackleTacticsFishingEMag_37.… · Bass, on their day, will take a range of different lures

If the plastic hasn’t been hit on thedrop, a few hops and pauses onthe bottom is normally all it takesbefore one of these bream nailsthe plastic. If you intend on tryingthis type of fishing I wouldsuggest keeping a good supply ofjigheads and plastics… if thetrees aren’t getting them, the bigbream busting you off on snagswill.

It can get quite frustrating somedays and there will be days whereyou chuck everything at them butthey are being very touchy. Asmear of the Pro-Cure GarlicSuper Gel scent on the plasticcan get the bite happening andturn a slow day into a good day.

Fishing for these brutes out of akayak is very enjoyable, butrelaxing and stressful at the sametime. These big bream that I catch are most times older than I am and Ichoose to release all of them so that they can go back to breed and allowsomeone else the enjoyment of catching them.

Cheers, Rhett

A solid bag inthe live well.

JIGGING PLASTICS

It’s amazing how thisrecreation or sport calledfishing keeps changing asnew forms of tackle evolveand so does the fishingequipment we use to get thefull benefit from what ispresented to our fishyfriends below the surface. The latest is our metal worldof jig crazy… from knife jigsto butterfly style jigs, down tothe ever popular smallerbrothers the micro jigs. Asmicro jigging gets morepopular, so do the otherolder styles of deeper waterjigging with metals and themodern trailer boat alsoallows us such a largescope.

Speciality rods have beendeveloped that are shorter inlength, with longer butts andparabolic curves that keepbending past the reel seat,PE 1-3 is the norm. Don’t getme wrong, I love this style offishing, but sometimes Ithink we forget how we usedto do it or the technique thatwe used to catch fish prior toevolution of these newstyles. The humble chromeslug has come a long wayand the thinking angler canalso adapt or crossoverother styles and techniquesto make things moresuccessful on any given day.

For me its plastics. They are just soversatile and definitely appeal to a widervariety of species. I love chasing AJs,kingfish, cobia and Spanish on them andlike to fish that 35 to 70 metre range indepth. Another good reason I chasethese species is that they often frequentthe areas that I like to fish, whether it bethe local artificial reef, wreck or deeperwater ledge and they are great fun, fightdirty, test your terminal tackle and pullheaps of string.

As with any fishing you have to fishwhere the fish are and the availability ofbait for the predators is paramount whentargeting them. Wrecks and artificialreefs normally have good populations ofbait and in turn attract the abovementioned predators. Of course everyarea is different and may work better oncertain tides, lunar activity, time of theday and season. A good starting point isan early morning tide change and agood sounder is also an advantage inseparating the bait from the fish andperhaps identifying what species lurksbelow.

Personally, most of my success hasbeen using the ZMan 5” StreakZ andZMan 7” Scented Jerk ShadZ in Pearl,Coconut Ice Glow, Opening Night andMotor Oil colours, rigged with a TT Lures5/0 - 7/0 HeadlockZ HD jighead. Weightwill be dependent on current and depth, however don’t be scared to fish a littleheavier so that you have direct contactwith your plastic. It will also track betterand not spin through the water columnon the retrieve.

AJs, cobia and dolphinfish, just a few that love a plastic.

Page 40: Night Jacks Bass in the Sticks Jigging The Soft Optiontackletactics.com.au/emagassets/49_TackleTacticsFishingEMag_37.… · Bass, on their day, will take a range of different lures

My normal approach, once the bait and apotential show are located, is to free spoolthe plastic down to the target depth, slowingit down a little with my finger slightly on thespool. Watch for any increase in speed asthere’s a good chance that if fish are in thearea you could get hit on the drop, the sameas you would jigging metal. Otherwise, waituntil the plastic gets to the bottom and thenyou can do the traditional pump and wind oreven the 3, 6, 9, 12 wind, lifting the rodevery quarter turn of the reel in a livelyfashion, micro jig style. For me I like two orthree fast jigs off the bottom, a fast burn tohalfway up, jig again and then fast burn tothe surface. This works a treat for AJs, cobia, etc. If there a few Spanishmackerel or spotties around and you are getting bite offs, a couple of jigsand a fast burn to the surface will normally stop this, or alternatively asmall section of wire that is able to be tied can be added, but can reducethe number of bites.

The sounder says… fish!

These bruiserslove the ZMan.

Page 41: Night Jacks Bass in the Sticks Jigging The Soft Optiontackletactics.com.au/emagassets/49_TackleTacticsFishingEMag_37.… · Bass, on their day, will take a range of different lures

We always try and run different coloured plastics on our first drops as it isgood to see if there are any preferences or patterns on the day. It is reallyimportant to ensure that your plastic is on the jighead dead straight andas mentioned earlier go a bit heavier so that when winding fast on theretrieve the plastic doesn’t spin. TT HeadlockZ HD jigheads are a must asthe grub keeper locks the plastic where it should be. There’s nothingworse than wasting a drop, especially in the deeper water, from a lack ofattention to detail.

Another game changer is the addition of aRev Head HD jighead and I run the ones witha Willow nickel (silver) or gold blade attached.I prefer the gold, but that bit of spinning blingcan really turn on a bite, especially in hightraffic or pressured wrecks or artificial reefs. Ifish this slightly slower on the retrieve, with amix of fast burns and stop starts, along with afew violent rips of the rod tip thrown in. Itmight sound funny… but perhaps anythingthat they haven’t seen before. Fish aren’t sillyand in pressured areas the same techniqueused by all can make for a dull quiet day.

So next time you’re out jigging ormicro jigging some metal at yourlocal, have that plastic ready todrop and likewise if you’re justrattling plastics have a Vector Jigrod ready to roll. Like all fishing, ifyou mix it up, think back or thinkout of the square from the norm, your bad days can become gooddays.
