Dear Friends,

With all the rain we have been receiving over the past few weeks I couldn’t help but think of a story I heard some years ago, it went something like this:

Every Sunday, when the vicar stood in the pulpit and was about to begin the sermon, he would say, “Let us thank God for …..”, and would proceed to mention something for which they could be particularly thankful.

Anyway, rather like the weather we have been experiencing just recently, it had been wet, wet and wet. Every time you opened the newspaper, or heard the news on the radio, or saw it on the television, the news was sad, bad or just miserable, there was absolutely nothing that could have been worthy of being thankful for.

So, the congregation were waiting with bated breath to hear what the Vicar would have to say. “He can’t possibly find something to be thankful for; everything has been so ghastly just lately,” said one lady to her neighbour.

The Vicar got up into the pulpit and you could have heard a pin drop. He cleared his throat, and said, “We should all be thankful that the weather and news are not like this all of the time.”

I am not suggesting that we necessarily need to be ‘thankful’ for all the miserable weather we have been facing, nor for the events that have been planned for so long being forced into cancellation, but to remember that there are always numerous

viewpoints to be considered.

At least two RECENT events in the parish have been dogged by dreadful weather, but what do we all remember about them? Being British and getting on with things nonetheless! Break out the wellingtons; put up another umbrella; and once you’re soaked through you can’t get any wetter anyway! It is the way in which we rise to the challenge of the potential disappointment of a failed outdoor event.

On the Sunday of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, the road across The Green in Nun Monkton was awash with heavy rain, but everyone was cheerful and the tents and gazebos were providing the shelter from the rain.

Only a couple of weeks later, the St Peter’s Day Feast was enjoyed by lots of people, in between the gorgeous sunshine and torrential rain showers (with thunder thrown in for good measure!).

Perhaps we need to be less speedy in writing an occasion off because it didn’t turn out just as we had planned, or hoped for. Yes, we can allow ourselves to be disappointed, but we can also rejoice that something really good can arise out of what initially seemed a complete flop.

Wherever you look in the Scriptures you will find Jesus adapting the situation he finds himself in and turning it into something that will benefit those around him; the feeding of the five thousand; turning water into wine; walking on the water; numerous healing miracles; and The Sermon on the Mount.

All these events happened in answer to the situation in which Jesus found himself

and had remarkable outcomes. Perhaps we could assess the situations in which we find ourselves, and instead of ‘throwing a wobbly’ (which rarely helps the state of affairs anyway), we should be adaptable and flexible. I’m realistic enough to know that this might seem unworkable optimism on the face of it, but I’m also realistic enough to consider the glass being half-full and not half-empty.

I do hope that whatever you have planned for the Summer you will be able to enjoy it; but, please keep in mind, that some of the best and most memorable things that happen to us were not necessarily planned.

Paul

CHRISTIAN AID WEEK 2012CHRISTIAN AID WEEK 2012CHRISTIAN AID WEEK 2012CHRISTIAN AID WEEK 2012 Maureen Long writes: This year our parish raised £867.95 from house to house envelope collections, Nun Monkton's coffee morning, Kirk Hammerton's plant and produce stall and the sale of quiz sheets.

£300 was Gift Aided which means even more for Christian Aid's work.

Many thanks to everyone who worked so hard to raise the money, especially to the envelope collectors who are sometimes given a hard time, and to those who contributed so generously.

Looking back to records of years gone by,

in 2002 our parish’s efforts for Christian Aid Week raised £186.34, so we have come a long way since then.

We are always interested in new ideas for raising funds during Christian Aid Week so if anyone has a brainwave before next May please let me know.

Christian Aid reports that this is their best appeal year ever, and the results will hopefully be improved further as the UK Government’s Department for International Development have pledged to match the first £5m raised pound for pound.

Thank you all for your generosity

As this edition of Niddside News is being prepared, the River Nidd is over its banks and the Great Yorkshire Show has just, sadly, been forced to cancel after a 1st day of mud, rain and stuck cars.

Undeterred by all this, however, preparations for the Tockwith Show are going ahead, including a Communion Service in the Churches Tent starting at 10.30 am with guest preacher Bishop James Bell. The Show have kindly said that parishioners are welcome to attend this service iwithout having to pay to enter the Show itself if you intend to leave immediately afterwards . Just go to the entrance point furthest from the road (which is next to our marquee) before 10.40 am and explain to the Gate attendants that you are only attending the service.

Long-range weather forecasts for the week before the Show are encouraging (and the sun did shine on St Swithun’s Day) but if the weather continues to behave in an unseasonal way, the service will be moved to St John the Baptist in Hunsingore — also at 10.30 am.

If it is necessary to move the service, we will ensure that an announcement is made by no later than 3pm on Saturday 4th August on our website (www. niddside.org.uk) and information will also be included in announcements on the Tockwith Show Hotline — 0871087108710871----872872872872----6879 6879 6879 6879 (10p per minute) which runs in the week leading up to the Show.

There was a painter called Fred, who used to cheat by thinning paint to make it go further. For some time he got away with this. Then came the day that the local church needed painting. Fred put in a bid, and because his price was so low, he got the job. So he set up his scaffolding, bought the paint – and thinned it down. A week later, as Fred was nearly finished painting the church, there was a horrendous clap of thunder. The sky opened, the rain poured down, and the thinned paint ran everywhere down the walls into the churchyard. Fred was no fool. He knew this was a judgment from the Almighty, so he got on his knees and cried: "Oh, God! Forgive me! What should I do?" And from the thunder, a mighty voice spoke... "Repaint! Repaint! and thin no more!"

JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS...JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS...JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS...JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS... ..went on across the Parish undaunted by the poor holiday weather.

Celebrations began on Sunday 3rd June in Hunsingore Church where around 25 people gathered to give thanks for the 60 years of Her Majesty’s reign. The service was held what looked like an unusual time - 2.15pm - but this permitted the church bells to be rung as part of the Jubilee Peal at 3.01pm.

Everyone from oldest to a small babe in arms was able to pull on the bell ropes and contribute to the general celebrations. The bellringers have received a commemorative certificate and a list of names has been sent to Buckingham Palace to be recorded permanently in the Royal Archives.

On the Jubilee Tuesday, 80 people came to Hunsingore Village Hall to join in the Jubilee Barbecue (photo above) and a good time was had by all, with party-goers trying very hard not to be holding the parcel in a huge games of ‘Pass the Parcel’ when the music stopped. In addition, Nigel Twaites reports that ‘mysteriously’ most of the prizes were won by children.

Meanwhile, over in Cowthorpe, a village-wide party featured an apparent State Visit from two very Important Persons who took time on tneir special day to come to Cowthorpe (see photo on next page)

FROM 2 TO 27 AUGUST THE YORK FROM 2 TO 27 AUGUST THE YORK FROM 2 TO 27 AUGUST THE YORK FROM 2 TO 27 AUGUST THE YORK MYSTERY PLAYS WILL RETURN TO MYSTERY PLAYS WILL RETURN TO MYSTERY PLAYS WILL RETURN TO MYSTERY PLAYS WILL RETURN TO MUSEUM GARDENS.... WITH A MUSEUM GARDENS.... WITH A MUSEUM GARDENS.... WITH A MUSEUM GARDENS.... WITH A MODERN TOUCHMODERN TOUCHMODERN TOUCHMODERN TOUCH The Mystery Plays were a great medieval tradition in York, a way of bringing religious messages to the streets of the City and a huge celebration. They were performed on the day of the great medieval festival of the Feast of Corpus Christi.

In one day, at least 48 individual plays would be performed in York by members of the different Guilds. Each guild would perform a play, often one that was most fitting to their members. So the shipwrights presented the building of Noah’s Ark, and the marriage of Cana where Christ turned water into wine would be acted out by the vintners.

The text of the original Mystery Plays is available online and an original copy of the script is held by the British Library.

The main purpose of the Mystery Plays was to glorify God. But it was also a great day out, and the guilds vied with one another to produce the best play. Sometimes artistic temperaments got the better of the performers and the cordwainers, who staged the agony and betrayal of Christ, rioted against the carpenters in 1419 and against the weavers in 1490 and 1492.

The Mystery Plays were banned in 1569 by Elizabeth I who was concerned that, with the whole of the North of England in rebellion against her, the plays would become a rallying point for the rebels.

In 1951, the Mystery Plays were revived as part of the Festival of Britain, and were performed in the ruins of St Mary’s Abbey in Museum Gardens and were a huge success. Since then, there have been a number of performances of the Plays around the City, and this year they are returning to their modern ‘roots’ in the Gardens.

The performance this year features a

massive new stage, beautiful covered seating and a cast of hundreds, mostly volunteers from the local area but supported by professional actors in the lead roles. Over the years, many famous actors have performed in the mystery plays, including Dame Judi Dench, Christopher Timothy, Simon Ward and Victor Bannerjee. This year, Ferdinand Kingsley, son of Sir Ben Kingsley will play both the parts of God and Jesus.

The supporting volunteer cast and the chorus of singers are so big that they have been divided into 2 teams who will perform on different nights. The play itself will use a new version of the script in order to compress it into about 2 and a half hours and, in a tribute to its 1951 origins, the actors will dress in costumes set in the period of the 1940’s and 1950’s.

Although tickets for the early performances are already selling out, tickets are available for later performances (which includes Saturday afternoon matinees) at the Mystery Plays website at

FARMINGFARMINGFARMINGFARMING ANDANDANDAND FOODFOODFOODFOOD Andy Ryland is the Rural Officer for Ripon and Leeds Diocese. This is an extract from a longer article

As global population rises and our valuable natural resources are under increasing pressure the need to find intelligent ways of balancing production, consumption and environmental protection are critical.

In recent years there have been food riots around the world as a result of food shortages and rising costs, which are impacting particularly on the poor. There are also concerns about UK food security and therefore Government policy is emphasising production. So what has driven these changes?

Several factors are coming together that are driving up the price of food across the world and creating what some see as a perfect storm

A growing demand for food and meat, especially in the emerging economies of China and India

A growing demand for energy across the world which means agricultural land is being used to grow energy crops. Even in Yorkshire wheat is being grown to produce bio ethanol and oil seed rape is being grown to produce bio diesel.

On top of this is the threat of climate change and pressure on water supplies.

We live on a beautiful yet fragile planet, where our very existence is dependent on a few inches of top soil, rain and sunshine.

Recently the government's chief scientist Professor John Beddington delivered what he called a 'gloomy, frightening but optimistic' presentation on these challenges.

Focusing on population increase and climate change, Professor Beddington said food, water and energy poverty remain the fundamental challenges. About 40 per cent more water will be needed by 2030.

He added that the world's population was likely to reach nine billion before 2050.

"Business as usual in the agricultural industry to meet the burgeoning population and demand on resources is going to exacerbate climate change," he said.

The responsibility for change lies both with farmers and consumers.

On the one hand famers need to embrace best agricultural practice and modern technologies to ensure optimum levels of production in the most environmentally sustainable way.

On the other hand as consumers we need to make intelligent purchasing decisions, purchasing food items with the lowest environmental impact and which have been produced in the most efficient manner.

The good news is that British farmers are some of the best in the world producing quality food to high standards of animal welfare and the environment. They use modern technology with increasing precision and do not use more chemicals than are necessary alongside their desire to protect and respect the nature and landscape around their land.

Many British farmers are also harnessing energy from the land, the sun and wind to produce electricity and heat as well as fuels for vehicles homes and businesses. British farmers are also passionate about their animals. That’s why our animal welfare standards are amongst the highest in the world.

Three things we can all do:

Chose local and in-season produce.

Look out for labels, such as the Red Tractor, LEAF Marque and the Lion on eggs.

Ask our retailers, restaurants and pubs where their food comes from.

THE DIAMOND JUBILEE 2012THE DIAMOND JUBILEE 2012THE DIAMOND JUBILEE 2012THE DIAMOND JUBILEE 2012 orororor WHAT A DAY !WHAT A DAY !WHAT A DAY !WHAT A DAY ! Jennifer Oxtoby shares her memories of the Jubilee Weekend The Village had an idea to celebrate the Jubilee back in March. We called a meeting and there were lots of ideas and enthusiasm so we started putting together a plan for a Big Sunday Lunch on June 3. We would make a special time of enjoyment with friends and family on the Village Green - a perfect space which lends itself to enjoyment.

We decided we would have a Street Lunch where we would bring our own food and drink to suit our own needs - dishes would range from sandwiches to Coronation Chicken.

We would make a commemorative mug to be given to each of the children in the village, we would toast our Queen and cut a cake.

Moving on a few weeks, the time was now getting near and things began to fall into place. Plans were made for a Scarecrow Competition, Music, Marquees, Bunting of all sorts to decorate the area. Folk remained enthusiastic even though the weather was a concern. But, we soldiered on.

Finally, the week before, we were full of anticipation. Saturday we had various people to get the Green ready. Marquees were erected, with tables and chairs in place so that we could make an early start on Sunday.

The scarecrows were on display all along Pool Lane and around the village—including representations of the Queen, Prince Philip and even the corgis. There was a Royal Barge on the pond. So much had been put together with the Spirit of the Jubilee in mind.

Then....Sunday Morning: I woke to sound we were all dreading - RAIN !!! We decided to go ahead despite the rain, putting on the Dunkirk Spirit. We got busy putting the tables up and moving the marquees over the seating area to keep some space dry to eat our lunch.

We sat down at 1:00 for 1:30 and welcomed everyone, and the party got started, with everybody full of fun, enjoying the food and the laughter, which could be heard all over the village. 50’s music was playing, and we presented the mugs and had a Loyal Toast.

The cake was cut by the oldest person in the village - Mrs G Huby - and we all then sang God Save the Queen in a good voice.

Our footwear was soaked but not our spirits. We had the local band play in the Alice Hawthorn, and it was good to hear live music, and this rounded off a good day.

We won’t let the rain stop a party.

A week later we finally planted an oak tree on the Green, which was grown from an acorn by Mr Aplin with his grandson Archie - this will be a long-lasting reminder of our Diamond Jubilee Celebration.

A huge thank you to all the villagers for your help and support

MANY CONGRATULATIONS...MANY CONGRATULATIONS...MANY CONGRATULATIONS...MANY CONGRATULATIONS... ...to our DCC Treasurer and Village News Editor, Les Hornby, who has been awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in recognition for services to the Community in Kirk Hammerton.

MUSIC IN THE VILLAGEMUSIC IN THE VILLAGEMUSIC IN THE VILLAGEMUSIC IN THE VILLAGE The Village Band worked over-time during the Jubilee week-end, playing for the Hog Roast and Barbecue on Saturday and entertaining us all at the Village Picnic on the Monday. This was a really successful and fun event for all ages. A big thank you to Karan Main for her enthusiasm and perseverance !

Two weeks later the Village Choir led by Nigel Robertshaw gave a magnificent Concert in church. The programme included 2 solos and a monologue as well as popular songs, the National Anthem and a rousing Land of Hope and Glory.

GRAND OPENING AT GRAND OPENING AT GRAND OPENING AT GRAND OPENING AT KIRK HAMMERTON SCHOOLKIRK HAMMERTON SCHOOLKIRK HAMMERTON SCHOOLKIRK HAMMERTON SCHOOL

On 23rd June, Kirk Hammerton School held an Open Morning for children, parents and friends to come along and have a look around school.

In addition, the Revd Clive Sedgewick, Director of Education for The Diocesan Education Team for Bradford and Ripon & Leeds attended to to open the new 'Outdoor Area'.

The morning was very well attended, and who came along remarked positively on what a splendid school we have, what superb facilities are available for our children to be educated in and how lovely the grounds and general environment are.

There were also many positive comments about the excellence of the children's work displayed in the classrooms as well as about the happy and natural 'family like' atmosphere that exists amongst the children, parents and staff.

It was wonderful to see the children (and staff) with their shoes and socks off paddling around in the pool, which is at

the centre of the outdoor area.

Inside also, leaders from the 3.30 After School and Breakfast Club were selling a variety of items made by the children themselves at the Club to raise funds for the School.

The overwhelming view was, "What a BRILLIANT school we have!!"

You may have seen copies on display in all our Churches, but sadly very few of these are picked up, even though it can be quite an eye-opener to see what else is going on in parishes around us. Also, because of date issues, this never arrives in time to go out with Niddside News.

Now, however, the Diocesan Press Office have joined the internet age and placed the newsletter online for easy online access.

4th August Sithney (or Sezni )4th August Sithney (or Sezni )4th August Sithney (or Sezni )4th August Sithney (or Sezni )

You know how some men find women’s interestS in romance and clothes hard to cope with? Well, Sithney should be the patron saint of all such men.

According to a Breton folk legend, Sithney was a hermit of long ago, minding his own business, when one day God told him that he was going to make him the patron saint of girls. Sithney was horrified. He foresaw a future where thousands of young women were forever plaguing him to find them good husbands and fine clothes..... the thought of it appalled him. So Sithney begged God for some other job, something more peaceful, than dealing with young women. “Very well,” said God. “You can look after mad dogs, instead.”

Sithney replied cheerfully: “I’d rather have mad dogs than women, any day.” And so it was. Since that time, young women have pestered other people for husbands and fine clothes, while sick and mad dogs have been taken to drink water from the well of St Sezni, patron of Sithney, near Helston in Cornwall.

7th August7th August7th August7th August Cajetan (1480 Cajetan (1480 Cajetan (1480 Cajetan (1480 ---- 1547)1547)1547)1547)

Bit short of cash for your holiday this year? Cajetan should be the patron saint of anyone who needs some extra money – right now. For it was he who founded the Monts de Piete – the pawnshops – in the 16th century. They were first designed to help people through a lean time, not exploit them.

As a young man, Cajetan gave up a brilliant career in law to become a priest, and went on to spend his life fighting corruption within the priesthood. He and his friends founded the Theatine Order, which promoted study of the Bible, sound Christian doctrine, spirituality of worship, caring for the sick, and good pastoral

care. They worked in Verona, Venice and Naples – where the pawn shops first appeared. Cajetan would undoubtedly have a lot to say about the amount of interest different lenders charge these days.

31 st Raymond Nonnatus (1204 31 st Raymond Nonnatus (1204 31 st Raymond Nonnatus (1204 31 st Raymond Nonnatus (1204 –––– 40)40)40)40)

He is the patron saint of childbirth, midwives, children, pregnant women, falsely-accused people and priests who want to protect the secrecy of confession

Raymond Nonnatus is a good patron saint for anyone who does not take life for granted. The account of his own life begins with the story of how his mother died just before his birth, and of how Raymond was somehow extracted from her dead body just in time to save him. (‘Nonatus’ means ‘not born’).

Raymond grew up in Portello, Catalonia and became a monk, joining the Mercedarian Order. Perhaps because of his gratitude for his own life having been spared, Raymond developed a passionate desire to see other people set free to live the lives God had given them. Whatever the reason, Raymond made the difficult and dangerous journey out to Algeria in order to redeem many slaves from what was a living death. So passionate was he to free them, that he even offered himself as a ransom for others’ liberation.

While in Algeria, Raymond preached Christianity to the Muslims, and was put into prison, before eventually being sent back to Spain. The Pope sent for him, but Raymond was so weakened by his suffering in Algeria that he died on the way to Rome. But by then Raymond was content. Just as his life had been given back to him, so he had used it to give life back to others.

JINGLES’

PAGE Hi ! My name is Jingles, and I live here in Lower

Nidderdale.

I’m called Jingles because of the bells on my hat –

every time I shake my head - it jingles ! I’m here in

each edition of Niddside News with ideas and

stories for you.

As you read this, the London 2012 Olympic Games will have begun. Hundreds of

athletes will be running, jumping, cycling, swimming and competing in lots of other

ways to win medals by being the best in the World. In his letter to the Christians in

Corinth, the Apostle St.Paul encouraged them to be like the athletes who trained for

the Olympic Games: “to be disciplined, to keep going and to never give up”.

You can make up your own medals to wear during the games. If you cut out two

medals below, you can glue them to some cardboard and then colour them in and wear

them (you’ll need about 60 cm of ribbon which you thread through the hole at the

top of the medal).
