NICMAR students land overseasplacementsGouri Agtey Athale, TNN Dec 19, 2006, 02.58am IST
PUNE: The on-campus placement fever, coupled with dizzying packages, is hitting the specialised
management institutions as well. The global boom in the construction sector has ensured that 25% of 300
students from the National Institute of Construction Management and Research (NICMAR) campuses in Pune
and Hyderabad, have landed overseas jobs.
While most have been by construction firms in the Gulf countries — Qatar, Abu Dhabi — there is expectation
that Japanese major, Choyoda, could pick up three students, of the nine they interviewed.

"Our entire post-graduate batch of 219 students at the Pune campus was recruited in four days. The students
at the Hyderabad campus were similarly picked up in a matter of a couple of days," MG Korgaonker, director
general, NICMAR, said.
Salary packages match the kind of need the industry is facing. The aggregate average package for the entire
batch of 293 students was Rs 5 lakh per annum, minus the benefits, Prof Korgaonker added.
"The highest salary package so far has been a Rs 1 lakh per month offer from an overseas company. The
average overseas salary is Rs 65,000 per month plus benefits while Indian companies have offered a
maximum salary of Rs 5 lakh per annum plus benefits. The lowest, by an Indian company, is Rs 3.5 lakh per
annum plus benefits," Prof Korgaonker noted.
Referring to the placement of the current batch of the PG diploma in advanced construction management, Ajit
V Pawtwardhan, dean, PG programmes, NICMAR, said these were mainly students with a degree in civil
engineering or had degrees in architecture. A few of them were mechanical or electrical engineers.
Prof Korgaonker noted that over the next eight years, investments in the region of Rs 30 lakh crore could flow
into the construction sector, through the estimated Rs 14 lakh crore over the next eight years in
infrastructure-related projects, SEZs and the retail sector.
This will need huge manpower resources, which NICMAR, as the single-largest specialised institute in
construction management in Asia intends to tackle.
"We are planning to double our student intake in the next three-four years at our Pune campus. We will
invest Rs 15 crore here," he said. NICMAR, supported by the industry, has a 10-acre campus at Pune,
besides campuses at Hyderabad and Delhi. It also has offices in Mumbai, Dubai and Bahrain.
