Five, Fair - Fast - Easy Steps To Buy Your Nichols Bulls

1 As soon as you a r r ive at Nichols Farms (Iowa)

register for your buyer’s # and get the bulls’ performance records, EPDs, genomic profiles and carcass data.

2 Bulls will be penned by breed, by performance, and

by price. A selector board will be posted by each pen with the tag/brand # of each bull in that pen.

3 At 1 PM the first selections will be made in buyer number order. Take the card that matches the bull(s) tag # you wish to buy.

4 In case another person selects a bull that you want to buy — you (and others) have the opportunity to bid on that bull. You will bid

in $50 increments against the person who initially pulled that card. If the person who pulled the card does not want to raise your (and others’) bids, he or she has the opportunity to make another selection before any other bulls are selected from that pen. A Nichols Farms representative will be at each Selector Board to answer your questions and conduct the bidding. The only bidding will be between the people who want to buy the same bull on which a card has been pulled from the Selector Board.

5 When you make your bull(s) selection, write your name, address, and phone # on the card and give it to Lillian or Phyllis Nichols

at the office.

6 You can buy your bull on the internet on opening day. Contact DV Auction https://www.dvauction.com/

Sale Terms and Conditions - 2021Bulls will be semen checked prior to pick up or delivery.

Nichols Farms offers death and loss of use warranty on their sale bulls. This warranty must be purchased at time of sale.

Bulls are guaranteed to service cows. Any bull that settles healthy cows by natural service or passes a fertility test made by a certified veterinarian mutually agreed upon by Nichols Farms and buyer shall be considered a breeder.

The following exceptions apply to all breeding animals sold by Nichols Farms. ● Animals put in service or bred at less than 12 months of age. ● Injury or disease to the animal occurring after the sale. ● Gross negligence or misconduct on the part of the buyer.

EPDs: Expected Progeny Differences are estimates based on the data of the individual animal and his relatives in all the different herds across the breed’s population. EPD’s figures are in actual pounds, plus (+) or minus (-) for each trait. Those below would be minus (-) and those above average would be plus (+). You can expect these differences in the actual weight of your bull’s calves. EPDs predict the transmitting ability of each bull when compared with the many thousands of bulls in each breed.

EPD Note: You can compare the purebred Nichols Angus, purebred South Devons and South Devon Hybrids because their base point has been adjusted to the Angus base. You can not compare EPD’s between Nichols pure-bred Simmentals. pure bred Angus and Nichols Composites. Nichols pure-bred Simmentals and Simmental Hybrids are on the Simmental base.

Black Diamond was the very first black

polled pure bred (94%) Simmental

bull. Dave Nichols bought him in 1976

for $3,000. His birth wt. of 76 lbs and his

frame score of six was critical. Today

about 85% of the Sim-mental breed traces to Nichols genetics.

Steelman was the very first homozgous polled pure bred Simmental bull. Lee Nichols purchased him in 1979 for $3,500. He would take the horns off and fix the udder on any cow’s calf. Leased to Tri-State.

Although various people were moving toward black polled non-diluter Simmentals—two breeders stood out in this movement—Jim Tay-lor and Dave Nichols. In the 70s both started breeding black, polled, non-dilluter cattle on independent courses. Nichols put his priority on polled, followed by black and non-diluter. Taylor had black non-diluter and then polled. In addition both

breeders were selecting for moderate framed performance cattle during the time the large frame race was in full swing. Neither operation was breeding to sell high dollar seedstock, but were instead... soley focused on servicing their commercial cus-tomers.
