from all parts of the country formed flying

squadrons. In one squadron, medallions

struck in solid bronze were presented to each

member of the unit. One young pilot placed

his medallion in a small leather pouch he

wore around his neck. Shortly after acquir-

ing the medallion, the pilot's aircraft was

severely damaged by ground fire. He was

forced to land behind enemy lines and was

immediately captured by a German patrol.

All of his identification was removed except

for the leather pouch. That night he

managed to escape, eventually stumbling

onto a French outpost. Unfortunately, the

French soldiers did not recognize the pilot as

an American and were prepared to execute

him. He had no proof of his allegiance, but

did have his leather pouch containing the

medallion. They delayed his execution so

that his identity could be confirmed. With

his loyalties established, his French allies

gave him a bottle of wine and sent him back

to his troops. Back at the squadron, it

became tradition to ensure that members

carried their medallions at all times. This

was accomplished through the same chal-

lenge we are now a part of.
