The past year has often been referred to as the year ‘post-Francis’. Since February

2013 the NHS has responded to the Francis report recommendations and it’s clear that there are tangible cultural changes. Safe staffing has risen up the agenda, there is increased awareness of

whistleblowing, recruiting for values and a growing appreciation of the link between

staff experience and patient care. One year on, the February 2014 staff survey results also show

improvements in most indicators, including key areas such as staff engagement.

This hasn’t all happened by chance though. This has happened because of the actions of managers and leaders on the ground. NHS Employers has worked hard to ensure that the NHS workforce has the support it needs to implement these changes and help them deliver safe, effective and compassionate patient care. Here we take a look at some of the highlights of our work in 2013/14, and look ahead to our priorities in 2014/15.
