Second B.Sc. Zoology Students, faculty members of our department and Mr. Paul Alagarasan,

NGO, FORD Trust Jointly organized the extension activities in Maruthangudi Village and

Tiruppattur on 26.09.2013. In Maruthangudi, students actively participated in campus cleaning of

Middle school and Primary Health center and more than 100 Saplings were planted in and around the

area. Our students gave motivation talk to the school children on higher studies. Dr. G.V.Gopinath,

Assistant Professor of Zoology, demonstrated about Biological pest control to the farmers. Mrs. Lily,

NGO gave counseling about “Adolescence and their Problems” for girl’s students. Second group of

students, took part in the cleaning of Tiruthali Nathar Swamy Temple, Tiruppattur.

“Cleanliness of the Village and Environment Protection” was chosen as the theme for the year 2013-

2014. Thiru. Kaleel Rahuman, VAO in-charge, Mr. M.Sethuraman (PTA Secretary) and Mr.M.Sheik (Clerical

Staff- Panchayat office) inaugurated the extension programe. Through the extension activities, students not

only gain knowledge on environment protection, but also educated the village people in keeping their village

clean and healthy. This visit to Ranasingapuram has made the people to understand the necessity of keeping

the village clean and at the same time students were able to have an opportunity to serve the village people. 37

Second year students took part in this programme. Awareness on Plastic hazards, dengue fever, personal health

problems etc were given to the local peoples by the department staff members.

Extension activity is part of the Alagappa University curriculum (Part-V) for the

undergraduate second year (third semester) students. As per the syllabus, this activity is a two day

activity and it be should carried out preferably on Saturday and Sunday. Each department in the

college should adopt a village in and around of their college.

The main objective of the program is to educate and sensitize a college student about the

problems and practises of a common man so that the student can understand the ground reality on the

various problems and practises of a common man.

Department of Physics has adopted a village known as “Kottaiyeruppu” in Sivagangai district.

This village is situated on the Tiruppattur-Madurai national highways, at a distance of 4km from the

college. One school known as “Government Higher Secondary School” is located in this village.

With the help of the President of the Panchayat and local participants from the village, the second

year Physics students of every year, visited this adopted village on a given Saturday and Sunday in

their third semester and carry out school campus cleaning program, planting of tree saplings in the

school campus, door-to-door campaign programs to create awareness on environment, various health

issues, besides giving power point presentations on topics related to the Physics to the higher

secondary school students. In the door to door campaign, pamphlets were distributed to create

awareness on various health issues, conservation of nature bodies, rain water harvesting, dengue

awareness, cleanliness of surroundings etc. to the local villagers. Rallies were also conducted to

create awareness on various environmental issues.

REPORT

Department of Information Technology rendered their extension activity to

TELC Blind School in Thiruppathur by tree plantation, campus cleaning etc on 12-10-

2013 and 13-10-2013. Forty one students participated in this program. Tree seedlings

were obtained from Tamilnadu Forest Department. Every year we plant 50 seedlings in

the adopted village and each student adopt tree saplings and take care of the seedlings.

They plant the tree either in college or in their residential area. Throughout this

programme, village peoples and panchayat board officials also joined hands by

extending their possible support in the activity.

Apart from serving the school children of the Government High School,

T.Pudupatti by taking free coaching classes in English, our Department has taken a

step further to extend its community-oriented services to benefit the villagers by

adopting the village, T.Pudupatti. Some of the members of the Department of English

along with about 59 boys and girls of II and III year B.A English Literature Course of

Study went to T.Pudupatti, on 16-02-14 and 15.02.14inaugurated the village adoption

programme.

V.S.A.Subramanian principal, presided over the function. Dr.Maruthavanan H.O.D. of

English of our College offered felicitations. Dr.M.Maheswari,

Mr.V.GurudevrajanK.R.Balamurugesh, and P.Subbiah Senthil Kumar participated in

the function.

The Panchayat Chief Mrs.V.Saraswathi the President of the Parent's Association

Mr.Nehru, and Staff Nurses Mrs.Sudha, Raji and Kalaiammal were the special

invitees.

Mrs.Sudha delivered a fine lecture on How to avoid Dengue. About 50 local women

attend the meeting. The lecture was followed by an animating interactive session.

It was indeed a hearty function, the people evinced tremendous enthusiasm.

The students and teachers of chemistry department, Arumugam Pillai Seethai Ammal College,

Tiruppattur with assistance from Ford Trust conducted a two days programme in village

Maruthankudi.

On 20.10.2013, local peoples were given awareness on health issues mainly focusing on

dengue fever. Students visited every house in the village and checked whether any stagnant water is

present or not . Mosquitos spreading the dengue fever is lays eggs on the stagnant water present in

coconut husks, plastics, tyres etc. Students identified those vulnerable areas and disposed the water in

each and every house. We also conducted environmental programme in which we cleaned the

elementary school in Maruthankudi so that the kids of the village can have a clean environment

which promote the concentration in studies and impressed the cleanliness of the environment in the

minds of young buds. In this programme, 43 students effectively participated with the social view and

voluntarily involved in cleaning every part of the school and trimmed the large trees such that they

should not fall on the kids or on the building. Our students insisted the young students how to

maintain cleanliness around their environment. The total students were organized by all the staff

members of our department.

Our students taught the hazardousness of the plastics and how to minimize the usage of the

plastics in the day to day life. The village people, the school teachers and students appreciated our

activity and felt thankful to us.

The students and teachers of chemistry department, Arumugam Pillai Seethai Ammal College,

Tiruppattur with assistance from Ford Trust conducted a two days programme in village

Maruthankudi.

On 21.10.2013, we conduct green initiative programme in which we planted several type of

saplings in Maruthankudi village especially in school and primary health centre. We selected the

useful trees like Neem tree, blue berry, banyan tree, Ficus religiosa tree and Pongamia pinnata. So,

the peoples may use the fruits and nuts for their lively hood. They use the trees as shadows for them

and their cattle.

Department of Computer Science, Arumugam Pillai Seethai Ammal College, Tiruppattur, in

an endeavour to carry out welfare measures to the people of surrounding villages, pursue extension

activities. Department of Computer Science has conducted one day extension activities at

Thiruvudaiyar patti, a village near Tiruppatttur on 26th October 2013.

Tree plantation is good for the environment. Everyone knows that trees are the source of

oxygen. They inhale carbon dioxide and exhale oxygen without which the survival of living beings is

not possible on earth. Trees also provide us with many benefits necessary for survival, including

clean air, filtered water, shade, and food. The planting trees are little things that students can do. On

the request of the vice-president of the village tree plantation around the elementary School building

was carried on by our students.

In the afternoon, students distributed the notice to the village people about the tobacoo

addiction awareness. It is difficult to quit when teenager start smoking earlier. The tobacoo causes

various hazards to human body such as Lung Cancer, Heart diseases, high blood Pressure, Gum

disease, depression, Thyroid disease. Smoking is the cause of death in our society. So the notice

request the people to quit using tobacoo and not postpone the day of quitting. The students are quite

interested in doing good things to the people and they were motivated by the joy and kindness of the

village people shown to them.

Panchayat Neudmaram 2013-14 42

On 19.10.2013-20.10.2013, we took nearly 42 students from II B.Sc Mathematics to

Nedumaram village and carried out many activities. Students planted saplings on the roadside, school

zone and temple.. The villagers were asked to gather at the temple to have a meeting with our

students. They motivated the villagers for tree plantation, rain harvesting, family planning and self-

hygienic practices. The villagers were inspired by the charts and pictures, which were shown by the

students.

In conformity with one of the goals of our college to serve the society, the

October 2013 in order to fulfill the extension activity 1BEA3 subject. The
