Before work starts, all areas, such as floors must be protected.

Abrasive materials, including emery cloth, sandpaper,

wire wool and wire brushes can be used to remove

loose paint from surfaces prior to painting.

Metal surfaces with that

have rusted have to be

taken back to the bare

metal.

In this case, this is achieved by using a metal scraper and emery cloth.

Steel is then treated with re oxide paint, (as shown above) to prevent any further corrosion.

Timber is treated with undercoat before gloss coats can be applied. Once dry, each coat is sanded to a smooth finish before the next coat is applied.

A gloss coat is used to give a final shiny finish.

Paint can be applied by a variety of methods, including spray painting, application by roller, and by brush.

These methods are shown on the following slides.

Emulsion paint being applied by roller. Large areas can be covered quickly and evenly using this method.

Smaller, or more intricate areas such as door frames are painted with small brushes.

Spray painting will cover large areas quickly and evenly.

A wallpaper roll is spread out on a decorator’s table, and cut to the required length.

A brush is used to get rid of any creases, and the paper is then trimmed.

Freshly hung wallpaper can then be painted in any colour if required.

Materials should be stored in a clean, dry place, away from direct sunlight, dust and frost.
