Greyhound racing’s controlling body in Victoria has come under investigation by Victoria’s Racing Integrity Commis-sion. Last week an investigation found nine GRV employees, some of whom had direct responsibility in the conduct of the sport, had placed bets on grey-hound races, with some bets placed at GRV during office hours.

Three employees had their services terminated - a full-time steward, one part-time steward and a full time grader.

Four employees have been issued with “first and final warnings”. One part-time employee resigned his position last Thursday.

Whilst another asked to have his case adjourned until the end of this week. We contacted GRV and asked that they name the staff who were dismissed, and also the staff who were issued with first and final warnings, but GRV de-clined.

GRV advised NGF that some mat-

ters may not be finished yet under com-mon law, and it will remain “in-house”. The Greyhounds Owners Trainers and Breeders Association President Geoff Collins told NGF

“Owners and trainers have ex-pressed concerns for some time that a betting culture may have existed at GRV headquarters.

The results of this RIC investigation would seem to support that theory but until we get full disclosure we have more questions than answers

GRV needs to come clean with all the facts to help restore participants confidence in the industry, said Collins”

New GRV Chairman, Peter Calliard, who was only appointed last week, said despite the actions and the investiga-tions, there was no suggestion that grey-hound races had been compromised.

Betting on greyhound races is a breach of the GRV code of conduct for employees.

Racing Minister, Dr. Denis Nap-thine said it is important the code is up-

held to protect the integrity of the Victo-rian greyhound industry.

“These actions by employees, who are responsible for the good conduct of greyhound racing, is utterly inappropri-ate and will not be tolerated,” Dr. Nap-thine said. “Victoria’s racing industry is worth more than $2 billion to the state econ-omy and provides more than 70,000 jobs.

The Coalition Government will not allow this critical industry to be put at risk by breaches of the employee codes of conduct.

“I am confident, particularly in light of the efficient and independent investi-gation and the penalties handed down to the employees involved, that Victoria has in place the measures needed to identify and address this inappropriate behavior.

SIX HEATS of the 525 metres Na-tional Sprint highlighted the night’s racing at The Meadows last weekend, with Graeme Bate picking up plenty of winners, but not necessarily with the greyhounds that most expected to get through to the Victorian State Final.

Favoured in the opening heat was Mepunga Nicky, but after she was checked at boxrise, her chance of representing the ‘Big V’ in the final seemed forlorn.

Making a quick getaway was Darwin Cup heat winner, Chief Bam-bury, a $15 chance who used the in-side draw perfectly to register splits of 5.05 and 17.75 before scoring an all the way 30.02 victory.

He downed kennelmate, Carol Allen by a length and three quarters, with Symmetry railing home into third place.

IN the next round, Kilty Lad drew the rails alley and was sent out the $1.50 favourite.

But in a similar run to the previ-ous week’s Maturity final when he camped behind the pacesetters, he

failed once again, with another from Graeme Bate’s ranch, Allen Lawson ($5.20) making all the play in front.

Dressed in the yellow singlet, he clung on to beat the popular elect by three quarters of a length in 30.14, while Breezing Shiraz finished fast for third.

A FEW runners were backed to win the third round, including Dino Ferrari ($4.60), Allen Hertz ($6.20), Iceman Raikkonen ($5.20), Stefan Bale ($3.30 fav) and Bubba’s Dream ($7.50).

After Iceman Raikkonen led early he was checked rounding the first bend, allowing Allen Hertz to assume the premier position over Dino Fer-rari, railing the ears off ’em, but still three lengths down coming off the back.

Sporting the white vest, Dino Ferrari never left the fence, and the Jamie Ennis trained chaser defeated Allen Hertz by three quarters of a length in a smart 29.90, while Iceman Raikkonen was next past the post.

RADLEY BALE showed us that he’s not lost any of his ability by an-

nexing the fourth State Sprint heat. The current Golden Easter Egg champ camped behind Explosive Drop until reaching the back straight then made his move.

Sent out at $1.80 favourite in the red vest, Radley Bale proved far too good for Explosive Drop, winning by five and a half lengths in Best Of Night 29.84, with Premier Boloney occupying third place. RECENT Darwin Cup winner, Tonneli Bale came from the widest draw to land the penultimate round in 30.04.

Another trained by Graeme Bate, the classy bitch was third behind Al-len Lennox and Rev Limiter at the half-away mark and made her move coming off the back.

Rev Limiter took over down the back but his reign was short-lived, with Tonneli Bale charging past then going on to score by over a length to the hard railing Cosmic Cooper, with Rev Limiter third.

FROM box two, speedy chaser, Dyna Tron won the start and ran them off their legs for the Dailly team at Anakie.

After clocking express splits of 4.98 and 17.62, he ran out a near two lengths winner over Allen Elroy and third placed Strong intention, clock-ing 29.98.

Graeme Bate and the Wheeler family have six of the eight in Satur-day night’s final, while Jamie Ennis and the Dailly team will rug-up one apiece.

Rob Britton prepared racer led from go to whoa in the 600 metres Grade 5 event, defeating Select Goddess by 13 lengths in 34.59, while Serene Passion sizzled home on the rail to snare the skinny end of the prize.

From 11 attempts it was the third win over The Meadows middle dis-tance journey, whilst overall he’s notched 13 wins and seven placings.

By the way, after this victory, maybe 13 has become George’s lucky number?

Surprise winner, Chief Bambury led from go to whoa in a Victorian State Sprint heat, running the 525 metres trip in 30.02 for Graeme Bate.

Another of Graeme Bate’s winners was Radley Bale, and the Easter Egg champ was impressive, recording 29.84 to score easily.

Dino Ferrari, trained by Jamie Ennis, railed to victory in a State Sprint heat, halting the timer at 29.90.

The brilliant wildcard concept that applies to our National Champi-onships allows the highest ranked AGRA greyhound entry into the Grand Final on the proviso that they contest their State Final. Bobby Boucheau goes into Thurs-day night’s race as the fastest qualifier from the heats, having scored in 41.87. That was the son of Bombastic Shiraz and Dallas Gypsy’s first race start in five weeks, with his previous run being a third to Dashing Corsair in the Superstayers at Albion Park. The Angela Jackson owned and trained stayer loves Sandown, where he’s not only the track record holder over the staying trip and the 595 me-tres, but also the reigning Sandown Cup champ. He’ll line up in box eight here, which is a great draw for a greyhound that likes to track out from the fence, and he’ll certainly be the one they’ll have to beat. His main danger will be the other heat winner, Shimaguni, who scored in 41.97 and made it three from four at the trip.

Trained by Jim Redenbach, she recently landed the Group 3 AWM Distance Championship, and in that race, similar to a heat, proved too strong for Echelon. The daughter of Primo Uno and Messines looks as though she’s get-ting stronger with each run and is also looking smarter each time she goes around, planning her moves with pre-

cision, and will make sure the favour-ite is kept honest. Litter brothers Echelon and Gran-duer have both qualified, and both got here with a second placing. Granduer for Len Ketelaar turned in an absolute bottler to run Bobby Boucheau to a half length at what was his first start over the 715 metres trip. He’s a big gangly type with not much early toe, but boy, does he mo-tor home.

You’d expect him to improve on his first-up effort at the trip, and with luck in running may just tip the previ-ously mentioned duo out.

Echelon is also capable of win-

ning this race without surprising, and in a heat went under by a length and a half.

But the Craig Treherne trained son of Mogambo and Off Springer has scored here in a flying 41.73, and it’s worth remembering he went within .01 of Chinatown Lad’s Wen-tworth Park track record a couple of months back.

But this race isn’t just a race in four, as both Bramley and Lady Arko have qualified, the former having scored here in 42.06, whilst the latter has a PB of 41.77; and that tells you they are quick enough to score if luck goes their way. - Darryl Embling

WHAT’S A KILO in weight be-tween friends? It’s everything when you are a 30 kilo racing greyhound. Toowoomba trainer, Col Byers proved once again what a master with greyhounds he is when Blon-die’s Babe led throughout to win a 520 metres Novice at Albion Park last Thursday night. Col had been worried the bitch was not getting to the line strong enough in 431 metres races at Ips-wich. His answer was to take a kilo in weight from the bitch... and problem solved. The daughter of Bombastic Shiraz and Blonde Enforcer ran 30.53. Col, who has only recently taken over training of the already three year-old bitch, was su-premely confident. Blonde’s Babe scored by three quarters of a length over Mr. Con-tender, with two lengths to third placed Penelope Blue. Blondie’s Babe took her record to 13 starts for three wins and eight placings, whilst her wins have all come over 520 metres at Albion Park. The bitch was formerly trained by Tony Brett for breeder and syndi-cate spokesman, Brian Kutner (Jr). “She’d been in a paddock for

four months. and Tony had told Brian he didn’t really have room to take her back,” said Col. “I was looking at buying her when Brian mentioned he had the bitch.” “But when I looked at how old she is, three years, I dropped right off.” That’s when Kutner asked Col to train her. “It took me a while to get her right and she ran a few placings at Ipswich over 431 metres lately, but I didn’t think she was getting to the line well enough so I took a kilo of weight off her,” said Col. It worked wonders. “She trialled 30.60 here re-cently, and that was good enough to win a Novice,” said Col. Col proudly strode to the start with Blondie’s Babe with a collar and lead in the colours of his be-loved Manly Sea Eagles Rugby League team. “My son got the collars and leads to sell through his shop, and

he gave me this one in Manly’s colours,” he said. Blondie’s Babe recently suf-fered another setback when she broke her tail in the catching pen at Ipswich and needed it removed. “It was the worst break I’ve seen,” said Col.

New flyer BOS FLYER was an outstanding dog, a multiple city winner for Bob and Dave Worsley.

But a few months ago Bos Flyer was bitten by a spider and ever since then has been fighting a brave fight to get back to the track.

The dog was at a Northern Rivers vet surgery for weeks re-covering.

Bob and Dave needed a re-placement… and it appears they have it.

The Worsleys went looking for a dog to race and found Radical Dos (Hallucinate - Punk Angel), who last Thursday night at Albion Park landed a 520 metres Mixed 4th/5th Grade in 30.33.

It was his third win in a row, and third from four starts since joining the Denise Robinson ken-nel.

Radical Dos had been nar-rowly beaten at his Albion Park debut, run down on the line by the powerful type, Ryght Finish.

“We were a bit stiff to have such a strong finisher as Jef-frey’s (Ahern) dog right behind us,” said Denise’s husband, Den-nis.

He had won his previous two starts for Denise on July 25 and 28, both in 30.19.

He scored by four lengths rushing away at the finish to beat tearaway leader, Chevez, with a half head to Give Em Curry third.

“Anthony Azzopardi recom-mended the dog to us,” said De-nise’s husband, Dennis, who han-dled Radical Dos on Thursday night.

“He has put us onto a few handy dogs in the past.”

Chevez sped to a long lead into the back straight but his 520 me-tres shortcomings were obvious by the home turn. “I thought he was in a bit of trouble in the back straight,” said Dennis, “but he’s surprised me that he won by so far at the finish.”

AT WENTWORTH PARK last Sat-urday night it was our turn to hit the track for Nationals 2011, and on the Stayers front Zipping Lad handed in a performance that could land trainer, Jason Mackay his third distance title. Zipping Lad was having only his second appearance over the half-mile journey and it’s quite obvious that this is where he will continue his chasing, despite just turning two years of age. Exiting box four, Zipping Lad bounced straight to the front and led from Mr, Meana on settling down, as both were the popular fancies and punters thought an exciting finish was in store. However, after a lap was run you got the feeling that Zipping Lad had just started to warm up, and the 32kg fawn chaser gradually increased his lead over Mr. Meana, who is strong at the finish of his races. Coming down the side Zipping Lad slipped into overdrive and left

was clear and going further away, saluting the judge six and a quarter lengths ahead of the fast finishing Slick Lee, completing the 720 metres trip in a fast 42.25, with Mr. Meana holding down third spot, a further two lengths back. Zipping Lad, by Malfoy out of Or Catra, raced by Fiona and Marty Hal-linan, has had 16 career starts for 10 wins and three placings.

Meana (Collision x Token Whiz), prepared by Mark Gatt, after 29 ca-reer starts has tallied 13 wins and 11 placings.

The other heat went to Beer As-sassin, who maintained his good re-cord over the long trip at the Glebe course.

Mark Gatt trains the son of Whisky Assassin, who has never missed a cheque in eight appearances at headquarters. When the lids opened, best away was Devine Nation from the six, with both the popular picks Melkate and Beer Assassin also well served at the start.

In the straight the first time Mel-kate took up the pilot’s role, but it was the black vested Beer Assassin that outrailed her leaving the straight.

Setting a good tempo at the head of affairs, Beer Assassin maintained his advantage to the home corner where some challengers again started to ‘lift’.

In the dash down the straight Beer Assassin was able to hold on, defeating Melkate by one and a quar-ter lengths, with Devine Nation a neck away third. Melkate registered a 42.67 gallop, whilst her quickest time at the tack and distance is 42.24. Beer Assassin (x Or Catra) has now had 38 career starts for 15 wins and 12 placings.

Carolyn Reinke trains Melkate (Late Late Show x Kowem Girl), with 10 wins and 12 placings from 52 career starts produced to date, whilst Pat Parelli’s Devine Nation (Elite State x Majestic Rush) from 38 career starts has won nine times with 18 placings.

WONDERFUL PRODUCER, Or Catra looks to have a mortgage on the NSW winner for the State Distance title, as she produced both heat win-ners last week, albeit to different sires. Though the stand-out selection does appear to be the Jason Mackay trained Zipping Lad, who is aiming to give his mentor his third National title following victories from Classy Customer and Texas Gold in recent years. Zipping Lad, despite his young age (August 2009), is a natural stayer.

The fawn dog is bold striding, has early speed and keeps on run-ning – fast. The most impressive part about this dog is when he has been to a track and returns the next time, he goes even quicker.

His 42.25 win last week is only about .30 off Chinatown Lad’s course

record, so given the right conditions, this level is under threat. HIS half-brother, Beer Assassin appears the logical danger, and the eight box will suit him, as he’ll have some galloping space early on.

However, if he’s to win, the Mark Gatt trained chaser must lead.

One real advantage for this dog is that he will rail, meaning the others will have to go around him. Mr. Meana and Melkate are not without a chance, and of course the latter’s kennel has won Staying titles previously as well, and with box two should be in a good position early. The strong finishing Altario and Slick Lee need the pace on, and if a few things go their way they are defi-nite place hopes, along with the con sistent Devine Nation. The race has plenty of experience and youth, but the younger legs are hard to go past in this race.

Zipping Lad is a class act, as the big fawn chaser traversed the 720 metres trip at Wentworth Park in 42.25 to land a National Distance heat.

A VERY LARGE crowd was in atten-dance at Betchoice Gardens last Friday in the twilight zone for the 2011 Laurie Healion Memorial Maiden final. For the second year in a row, John Finn produced the winner of this Group 3 event when Flavours led throughout in near track record time. The 21 months-old son of leading producer, Frosty Fruits was purchased for a good price from his breeders, the Chap-pelow family, after the dam’s first litter saw the likes of Pulp, Goodesy and Little Sparkle grace the tracks. Without doubt, any pup from future Frosty Fruits’ litters will be most sought after. When the eight runners arrived at the 515 metres starting point, punters had left Flavours as the race favourite, and from box eight it was the jump that would de-cide the result. When the lids opened Flavours stepped brilliantly and charged across the face of the field, along with Pretty Pre-cious, who followed the pink down into the first corner. Leaving the straight Flavours got well into stride and rocketed through the next section, with both Pretty Precious and Teenage Dream doing their best but were never any chance of catching the tear-away leader. To the cheers of his connections, Flavours turned for home well clear and raced strongly to the judge, recording a nine and three quarter lengths victory over Pretty Precious, with Teenage Dream a further two and a quarter lengths away third. The journey was clocked in a flying

29.48, or just four lengths outside Veloc-ity Cloud’s course record. Flavours is by Bombastic Shiraz, owned by a group of mates who formed the Redliner Syndicate, and the 32kg fawn chaser went through the three rounds of this series undefeated in his first appearances at the racetrack.

Pretty Precious (Bit Chili x Full Time), owned and trained by Leanne Procopio, has snared three placings from four starts to date, whilst the Cliff Clark’s Teenage Dream (Knocka Norris x Size ’Em Up) to date has a win with three placings after his fourth start. Found the key ANOTHER WINNER on the card that looks a very likely type is the Eric Castle trained Key To Eden.

The daughter of Suave Fella is just 19 months of age, but the knowledgeable trainer has quickly placed the blue brindle chaser over middle distance journeys and she has taken an immediate liking to the extra ground. Contesting the Greyhound Products Direct Stake over 600 metres, Key To Eden stepped quickly from box four and led on settling down from the outside drawn pair of Westend Star and Bit Brisk. They strung out in the straight the first time, with Key To Eden starting to put a good margin on her rivals.

Down the back the margin increased for Key To Eden and it was just a matter of how strong she would be at the end. Turing for home Key To Eden stepped up another gear and raced pow-erfully to the line for a dominant 11 lengths win over Westend Star in 34.66,

with Bit Brisk occupying third place, a further two and a quarter lengths away. Key To Eden (x Wild Chant) has now 11 career starts for seven wins and one placing.

Westend Star (Big Daddy Cool x Westend Kaitlyn) from nine career starts has produced two wins and four placings for trainer, Jack Maher, whilst the Larry Procopio prepared Bit Brisk (Bit Chili x Full Time) after 22 career starts has grabbed seven wins and five placings. Smooth result THE JUDGE earned his pay in the 515 metres Multicam Systems Stake when a

blanket finish saw a narrow margin awarded to veteran, Smooth Manner, who downed Smart Sam and Brisk Miss. There was an early charge that saw Rutland Bert lead them early on, while Smooth Manner took a sit in second spot from box five.

Racing tight, the leader was under immense pressure, firstly from Smooth Manner and then Myron’s Angel issued a challenge. Rutland Bert was headed by Smooth Manner turning for home, with more late swoopers, Brisk Miss and Smart Sam charging late. That trio hit the line locked together,

until the judge found a half head margin, giving Smooth Manner the nod over Smart Sam in 30.22, and a neck to third placed Brisk Miss. Smooth Manner, by Over Flo from Rema’s Puzzle, and at over four and a half years of age has now recorded 17 wins and 29 placings from 90 career starts for trainer, Wendy Brown.

A sight that sends a panic message to all greyhound followers is a fallen chaser evading track staff and making it’s way back to the oncoming lure. It does happen, as shown by Paul Munt’s pics from the last race at The Meadows on Saturday night. Rapid Force (3) came down on the first bend and then quickly picked itself up and headed back up the home straight to confront the oncoming lure. The collision occurred on the top bend and gave stewards no other alternative than to declare the event a “No Race”. Such was Rapid Force’s impact with the lure that he managed to knock the retractable bunny clean off the lure arm, which attracted the attention of eagle-eye Miss Stackhouse, who declined to follow her mates into the catching pen and turned back to get a piece of the action.

DOMINATION of the red vest con-tinued at Dapto last Thursday night, with those greyhounds drawn the inside alley winning half the program and grabbed four of the first five races. Punters who threw the “one” into their tips have been on a great trot. as too has trainer, Wally Lutiger, who has bounced back a vengeance, train-ing plenty of winners lately after go-ing through a slightly lean patch not that long ago. The Bringelly mentor led home How About Gorby, who finished strongly to win the Betfair Blue Paws 4 Stake over 520 metres.

The son of Over Flo has been quite consistent so far in his races, however, he had only a couple of wins previously to his credit. At boxrise it was the centre drawn duo, Courageous Lee and Midnight Lee that began best, with the extreme outside drawn Highly Spirited dashing down the outside.

Leaving the straight Highly Spir-ited crossed and led the field, while How About Gorby received a nice run from his rails box to slide into second spot as they headed to the

back. Highly Spirited led them off the back but was under pressure from How About Gorby, who had dashed to the front by the home turn.

Down the home running How About Gorby stretched right out and raced to the judge a three and a half lengths winner over Courageous Lee in 30.44, while Ashlyn’s Choice ran on to grab third spot, a length further back. How About Gorby (x Susan Hotz) is owned by GBOTA Director, Richard Bligh, and overall has had 22 starts for three wins and 10 placings. Courageous Lee (Bit Chili x Re-morse Lee), raced by Adele Powell, has had 17 career starts for two wins and seven placings, whilst the John little prepared Ashlyn’s Choice (Over

Flo x Cokie Royal) has produced two wins and three placings from 18 ca-reer starts. Bright for age JUST TURNING four years-old, the Ron Johnson trained Coulta Bright was another who continued his good form of late with a strong win in the Greyhound Products Stake over the 520 metres journey. With only six runners, the re-cently well credentialled Country Rebel went out the favourite, and those who took the short odds were happy when the lids lifted, as she bounced straight to the front from box two. The other runners raced tight be-hind Country Rebel as they left the straight, but Coulta Bright did get a nice run along the paint to go into second spot as they headed into the back. Country Rebel was still the leader off the top corner but did stay a little away from the fence, which gave Coulta Bright a good sight of the lure and the chance to push past on the circle. Turning for home Coulta Bright used his 8kg advantage to shoulder Country Rebel out of the road and then sprinted clear in the straight. Coulta Bright kept going strongly to the line, winning by two lengths to Super Laurie, who also ran on well for second in 30.15, a half length in advance of Country Rebel.

Coulta Bright, by Bombastic Shi-raz out of Coulta Sandy, overall has had 54 starts for 16 wins and 15 plac-ings.

Super Laurie (Super Burst x Curi Lee), trained by Margaret Keys, has had 75 career starts for 18 wins and 29 placings, whilst Country Rebel is by Hallucinate x Fawn Country and

has amassed 12 wins and 16 placings from 44 starts for trainer, Neil Staines. Drinks all round SUPPORTERS of Vee Bee Bay were always heading to the bar to celebrate as the son of Knocka Norris had the Betfair Blue Paws 5 Stake won a long way from home. From the rails draw Vee Bee Bay began moderately, while Monique exited box three quite speedily, as too did Stylish Jezazz, who carved across from the outside draw.

Leaving the straight there was plenty of trouble, and as they spread out it was Vee Bee Bay that got the saloon passage ron along the fence and charged to the front as they headed into the back.

From thereon it was a one-act affair, with Vee Bee Bay striding clear down the side, and the further the race went the further the 34kg chaser gapped his rvials. When the judge called a halt, Vee Bee Bay was 11 lengths clear of Oh Kay in a smart 30.15, with a head to third placed How About Billy. Vee Bee Bay (x All Your Antics), trained by Andrew Bayliss, has con-tested 18 races for three wins and 10 placings.

Trained by Tony Messina, Oh Kay (Surf Lorian x Kristen Alyssa) has had 11 starts for a win and a plac-ing, whilst How About Billy (Over Flo x Susan Hotz0, trained by Wally Lutiger, from 24 career starts has notched two wins and 11 placings.

THERE WERE FOUR heats of the NSW Sprint series at Wentworth Park last Saturday night and all the winners produced exceptional efforts.

However, after the first three vic-tors had all done their brilliant best, along came Prince Diablo to clock the best, whilst he looked the best and proved he is probably the best sprinter in NSW at present. From box one, Prince Diablo missed the jump fractionally then gathered momentum quickly to lead his rivals by the first corner.

From the moment he entered the back straight the race was as good as over, but the effort of runner up, Dana Travis must be commended. Prince Diablo was untroubled over the final stages, defeating Dana Travis by four lengths in 29.55, with Wenzke back in third place, a further five and a half lengths away. By Premier Fantasy out of Best Of Diablo, trained by John Finn, Prince Diablo has had just 20 career starts for 10 wins and five placings.

Dana Gretel), trained by Neville Brown, has had 23 career starts for five wins and 12 placings, whilst the Brian Smith prepared Wenzke (Closing Argument x Spitfire Moosie) has produced nine wins and nine placings from 39 career starts.

Cold is hot IN THE opening heat the race did not go according to script, but the win of Cold Fusion showed just how much ability this son of Bit Chili really does possess. When the lids opened Cold Fu-sion jumped well from box five and outpaced the more popular picks, Diddy Rose and Oaks Road, who were drawn closer to the rail.

Leaving the straight Cold Fusion took up the front runner’s role over Dyna Forte, while Oaks Road worked into third spot, but the leader was travelling well. Turning for home Cold Fusion was still going too well for his rivals and raced to the judge a clear four and a half lengths ahead of Dyna Forte in 29.70, with third placed Oaks Road a further three lengths adrift. Cold Fusion (x Arena Lee), trained by Neil Falls, has had 19 starts for 10 wins and six placings.

Dyna Forte (Droopys Maldini x Hanicka Bale), trained by Graeme Bate and now owned in new NSW interests, has faced the starter 97 times for 26 wins and 22 placings, whilst the Mark Gatt trained Oaks Road (Spiral Nikita x Leprechaun Pace) has had 19 starts for seven wins and nine placings.

THE NEXT heat was won a long

way from home when the powerful finishing He Knows Uno was closer to the leaders than anticipated.

Racing close to the leader down the back straight, he went on with the business to win in 29.74, which was his best time to date at the venue fol-lowing four victories. He Knows Uno is a powerhouse sprinter, who is unlucky that his cur-rent crop of rivals are absolute flyers. He Knows Uno, a son of Primo Uno and Honeymoon Over, defeated Things Missing (Spiral Nikita x Lep-rechaun Pace) by two lengths, whilst Noble Pedro (Where’s Pedro x Miss Beeslee) finished third, one and a half lengths back.

THE OTHER heat winner was the Wally Lutiger trained Fancy Dean, who made it eight victories at headquarters and equalled his best winning time of 29.74. After a good getaway from box four, Fancy Dean took a sit just off

the pace and ran to the front coming down the side.

He cleared out over the conclud-ing stages and at the judge had three and a half lengths to spare over Mythical Eagle, while the winner’s litter brother, Fancy Will finished third, a further five and a half lengths away. Fancy Dean and Fancy Will are by Where’s Pedro out of Sweet Fancy, with the former having won 12 from 25 starts plus 11 placings.

The blue chaser has only had 12 starts in town, so his record is most impressive. ON A SAD NOTE, during the meeting the top class sprinter, More Space met her maker in tragic cir-cumstances.

The winner of over $80,000 in stakes was the pride and joy of Garry Edwards and was high on the list of Easter Egg favourites prior to this year’s race.

Improving in leaps and bounds, Prince Diablo, trained by John Finn, led from go to whoa in a NSW State Sprint heat, running a sizzling 29.55.

Budding star, Cold Fusion and led them a merry chase from the first turn in a National Sprint heat at Wentworth Park, scoring in 29.70, notching his 10th win from 19 starts for Northern Rivers mentor, Neil Falls.


OMEN PUNTERS would have been right on song at last Tuesday’s twi-light meeting at the Ipswich Show-grounds.

Race 5 was called the Give Me Five at Stud Stake.

Terry Hines, the owner of stud dog, Give Me Five, sponsors Race 5 at Ipswich, Albion Park, Townsville and Lismore each week to generate publicity for his dog.

“It’s an ongoing sponsorship with those clubs.”

“To be successful with any prod-uct you have to advertise, and it’s no different with a stud dog. It’s just that I do things a little different to most,” Hines said.

In that fifth race last Tuesday, there were three runners by Give Me Five.

And they ran first, second and third!

The trifecta dividend wasn’t huge at $57.30, which means plenty of punters collected on that combination.

The winner was Bob Essex’s Maywyn A Motza, who beat Troy Sharpe’s Set For Fame and Vicki Wisener’s Petie Pie.

The three greyhounds are from different litters, all by Give Me Five.

Hines says the stud dog game is tough.

“I will always sing the praises of my dog, of course, but there are a lot of top dogs out there for breeders to choose.”

“It costs plenty to keep the adver-tising going.”

“In just over 18 months at stud, Give Me Five has sired 360 winners, whilst over 50% of his pups to race have earned a prizemoney cheque.”

“And the dog is number 18 on the Australia-wide sires list.”

Whilst Give Me Five is yet to produce a superstar, Hines believes the recent effort of Gula Bale to make the Shepparton Cup final stamps her as being highly promising. “She’s still a youngster but made

it to the final, and what a race that was… El Grand Senor beating a top field of mainly seasoned sprinters,” he said.

“Gozo’s Gift is another one doing well, making it to the final of the Tweed Heads Galaxy a few weeks ago… the youngest runner in that field.” The progeny of Give Me Five win a lot of short course races, and Hines is happy about that.

“Racing everywhere nowadays is geared towards the shorter races, not only in Queensland.”

“If his pups can win over 331 and 395 metres, that’s good. But they aren’t all restricted to those dis-tances.”

“Just last week Got Standards came from an impossible position to win over 635 metres at Lismore.” Blessing in disguise WHAT A GREAT EFFORT by train-ing brothers, Renald and Martin At-tard last week.

They landed winning doubles at each of south-east Queensland’s rac-ing venues. It licked-off at Capalaba, winning with Hot Tiger and Wild Albert.

Then it was off to Ipswich three days later where Hot Tiger won again, and Grumpy Poet also scored on the same card.

COLD KNIGHT BATHURST RACECALLER, Ron Knight and his brother, Gary se-cured Elusive Ace to breed from, but she has given them a racetrack windfall, scoring her seventh straight win on Monday.

After the latest Bathurst win, a racegoer remarked to Knight that despite his ownership involvement, his broadcast was ‘cold’.

Said Knight, “I have owned greyhounds since I began calling the dogs at Muswellbrook in the 1980s and have become objective when I have a runner.”

“The best greyhound I have raced was Banker’s Dream, the Muswellbrook record holder.”

“Later she produced Goodesy’s dam, Frosty Fruits, but she was oth-erwise disappointing at stud.”

“Elusive Ace is a grand-daughter of great brood bitch, Elu-sive Rebel, so Gary and I wanted to get her for breeding purposes.”

“We possessed frozen semen from stud dog, Surf Lorian, and Glen Starr, of Starr Racing Kennels at Bathurst, was chasing a service to that dog.”

“We did a deal with him and got Elusive Ace, the only bitch in the litter whelped by Smokin' Aces.”

Elusive Ace was third at her first start but has since been unstop-pable, scoring at Bathurst, Dubbo and Grafton over 305 to 318 metres.

But trainer, John Buttsworth doubts she will see out the 520 me-tres at Wentworth Park.

“Elusive Ace had a couple of 400 metres trials before she began racing and got to the line reasonably well,” Buttsworth said last week. “She is much stronger now, so 400 metres races should not be a prob-lem.”

“But 520 metres at Wenty Park is a different matter, and while she is

getting draws and winning, I will keep entering her for sprints.”

Elusive Ace has box eight in Race 10, another 307 metres ‘flutter’ at Bathurst.

West and husband, Jerry, 73, got great satisfaction from the win because they bred For Glenda’s Boy along with his dam, Glenda’s Pick and grand-dam, Glenda’s Flash.

“We have 15 in work, but while I can see the races on TV, our grandson, Shane Bowen has to take the dogs to the track,” West said.

“Glenda’s Pick, the dam of For Glenda’s Boy, was very well per-formed and we sold her to an owner in South Australia for $30,000.”

“But after she arrived he wasn’t happy with her, so we refunded his money and got her back.”

“And she has turned out to be a good producer.”

“For Glenda’s Boy, who won over 297 metres at Dapto, is quick but has trialled over longer dis-tances, and 400 metres is about as far as he can get.”

“But we have just educated and named a litter from Susan Hotz, an-other of our bitches, which could become top notchers.”

Jerry and Pat West, who have been in the sport for 45 years, for-merly broke in the stock of the late Allen Wheeler, whose son, Paul is now Australia’s leading owner and breeder.

THAT MAN, Steve Kavanagh landed a winning double at Albion Park last Thursday night to add to the double he had trained the previous week. Steve’s winners were Gung Ho Rumble and Rumble Hero, the latter having won the previous week as well. And Steve believes Gung Ho Rumble could be a pretty smart gal-loper of the future when he learns to race. Gung Ho Rumble (Bombastic Shiraz - Rumble Charm) scored by two and a half lengths in 30.30, downing the late charging Finishing Style, with four and a half lengths to Cawbourne Cody third. And Rumble Hero ran 30.41 after doing it tough early to land a 520 metres Fifth Grade as well, scoring by a length and a half over Mini Pod, with two and a quarter to Notta Whisper third. Kavanagh has a good opinion of both dogs but particularly likes the potential of Gung Ho Rumble. “Awkward” is how he describes the dog. “But he is promising,” said Steve. “He’s in again on Monday night

and after that he’ll probably go to Wentworth Park for a few races be-cause there are some good age races coming up soon.” Gung Ho Rumble has won four of 12 starts and been placed in three others. “He liked drawing the wide box tonight,” said Steve. “It gave him room to move early.”

Rumble Hero, who brilliantly won in 30.21 the previous week when off the rails draw, had to work hard to get around the inside dogs from his wide alley. Once in front he travelled smoothly and always looked like holding off Mini Pod. He has now won six of his 12 starts and been placed six times.

Steve Kavanagh knows how to get ’em going, so you can expect Gung Ho Rumble, a 30.30 winner at Albion Park last week, to race through the grades.

WITH SIX of the eight runners in this week’s Victorian State Final of the National Sprint series at The Meadows, you’d have to think that leading mentor, Graeme Bate has a mortgage on the event.

The other thing of note is that all eight finalists are based in the Greater Geelong region.

Now that he’s been allocated the three alley, you’d have to reckon that current Golden Easter Egg champ, Radley Bale would take plenty of tossing.

And even more so after the red fawn racer took out a heat last week-end in Best Of Night 29.84.

Running a track record to annex the Darwin Cup recently, three times Group winner, Tonneli Bale re-corded 30.04 to land a heat but will need plenty of luck in this if she’s to head north for the NSC Grand Final at Albion Park on August 25.

Despite her class, drawing the widest trap at the 525 metres start at The Meadows usually means you have to hold down a forward posi-tion out wide or drop back then hope a run materialises in transit.

Either way, the Laurels winner cannot be taken lightly in this select field of crack sprinters.

Should Dyna Tron replicate his flying 4.98 early split then the Dailly team’s only finalist could run them ragged, especially if he can again skim over the surface in 21.62 down the back.

The red brindle chaser won a heat in 29.98, and the four draw at the Broadmeadows layout isn’t all

that bad if you’ve got good box speed.

Of course, another chaser that’s racing in superb form is the Rob Britton prepared Dino Ferrari, and like Tonneli Bale, seems to go better at Sandown.

Don’t get me wrong though, as the in-form dog did rail his way to a heat victory in an excellent 29.90, but box seven this time has done him no favours.

After leading throughout to snare a heat in 30.14, Allen Lawson drew the inside gate, which has to be worth something in this week’s final, whilst kennelmate and Traralgon record breaker, Allen Elroy will exit box two, having made the field with a gallant second to Dyna Tron.

Chief Bambury and Allen Hertz, drawn five and six respectively, are the other finalists, whilst the reserves are Cosmic Copper and Carol Allen.

BOBBY BOUCHEAU resumed from a five weeks spell to take out heat two of the Macro Meats NDC Vic over 715 metres, running the Best Of Night 41.87.

Sent to box six as favourite at $1.80, the Angela Jackson owned and trained stayer won the start and led Black Viking by a half length at the first peg in 6.24, with a half length to Bling It On in third spot.

Around to the Judge with a lap to travel and it was Bobby Boucheau tracking out from the fence in charge with a length on Bling It On and a further two lengths to Pepe’s Colour.

Bobby Boucheau made it to the far turn in 30.67 but Bling It On was really serving it up to the favourite, with Pepe’s Colour poised behind and Granduer was coming into it.

Bobby Boucheau had to dig really deep over the final stages and fought back gamely to hold out the late charge by Granduer ($5.70), scoring by a half length, with Lady Arko ($2.90) flashing home late along the fence to get third money, five and three quarter lengths in ar-rears.

Bobby Boucheau, a son of Bom-bastic Shiraz and Dallas Gypsy, has won three of his five tries at the trip, as part of his 17 wins in 29 goes overall.

First heat favourite IN HEAT one of the Macro Meats NDC Vic over 715 metres, it was the favourite, Shimaguni that scored in 41.97 to give her trainer, Jim Reden-bach the first leg of a winning dou-ble.

Drawn in box seven at $1.40, the daughter of Primo Uno and Messines settled fourth early before getting up to second but had a great battle with Echelon for that possie until the back straight.

Shimaguni took the lead off the back and did enough in the run, beat-ing Echelon ($4.20) by a length and a half, with Bramley ($13.10) three and a quarter lengths further afield.

Shimaguni has won three of four tries over the trip, whilst overall she’s picked up 14 victories in just 20 starts.

Budgie Lass gave Jim his double when she recorded 29.90 to score in the Sandown Facebook Mixed 4th/5th Grade over 515 metres.

Allocated the inside trap as a $6.60 fancy, the daughter of Meticu-lous and Giddigan led early before being shaded by Where’s Demonica

at the first mark but then railed to the front turning out the straight and led from thereon.

Budgie Lass didn’t look like be-ing caught, accounting for the late finishing Gold Heritage ($5.60) and Foot Tapper ($20.50), with the mar-gins being a length and a quarter both ways.

Budgie Lass, owned by the Budgie Syndicate, has won six of her 34 starts, whilst on the track she’s picked up three wins in 15 goes.

Both to Giles THERE were two races run over 595 metres and “Moe Maestro”, Peter Giles trained the winners of each. The first of those was Timmy Woodcock, who used to rails to ad-vantage and got home best to score in the Happy Hour Every Thursday Grade 5.

The son of Big Daddy Cool and Sniveller had the yellow vest on at $4.10 and was back sixth early before improving to fourth in the straight the first time and railed his way to sec-ond into the back.

Timmy Woodcock sped to the front around the final corner and greeted the Judge three quarters of a length in advance of Crossing Texas ($3.60 fav), with Onya Splash ($13.40) picking up third money, a length and a quarter in arrears.

Timmy Woodcock, owned by Wayne Vincent, recorded 34.76 to bring up his first win in seven starts at the trip that took his career tally to six firsts in 33 outings.

KINGA WILL, owned by Noel Talia, gave Pete his double by regis-tering the new PB of 34.45 to take out the Rapidvite Dual D & A Mixed 4th/5th Grade.

Coming from box two at $12.40, the son of Bit Chili and Or Catra was second early before finding the front turning out of the straight and from thereon cruised home a six and a half lengths winner over Timbo ($5.30), with three quarters of a length to third placed New Year’s Punch ($25.00).

Kinga Will has now won six of his 23 attempts, whilst on the track at the trip he has the good record of four wins in nine goes.

Leading combo again AUSTRALIA’S leading owner trainer combo of Paul Wheeler and Graeme Bate continued on their win-ning way with a double, and Bestie Bale was leg one when she ran 29.90

to take out the Sandown website Grade 5 over 515 metres.

Exiting the two trap as the popu-lar elect at $2.70, the daughter of Collision and Lexy Bale settled third early before getting into second place in the back straight.

Bestie Bale hit the front after straightening for the run home, and out in the middle of the track, was just too strong on the night, defeating Kon Tiki ($5.40) by a length and a half, with a half length to third placed Picaboon ($5.10).

Bestie Bale has now raced seven times and this was her fourth win, whilst at the trip this was her second go and the first time she’d scored.

WALTER BALE provided Paul and Graeme with their double when he led all the way to take out the Christmas Parties at Sandown Grade 5 over 515 metres.

Wearing the blue vest as a $10.10 elect, the son of Hallucinate and Ka-zar Bale ran splits of 5.02 and 18.85 on his way to an overall 29.86, regis-tering his first win at his 10th try at the journey.

The red fawn chaser ticked-up his 17th career win at start number 72 by beating his kennelmate, Stanford Bale ($4.50) by two lengths, with Shiraz Colour ($7.30) three quarters of a length further adrift.

Sandown Park 595 metres and 715 metres track record holder, Bobby Boucheau showed the benefit of a short let-up from tackling the best stayers in the land with a faultless display on his home track lat Thursday night. Angela Jackson’s pride and joy held off fast finishing Granduer in 41.87, giving him three wins from four tries over the half mile journey.

Big night for Jimmy Redenbach: Shimaguni was the first of a kennel double for the Cranbourne trainer after she took out the first heat of the State National Distance series at Sandown Park in 41.97. Later in the evening Budgie Lass showed a return to form after eight defeats with a strong victory over the sprint trip in 29.90. Shimaguni is the next “Black Caviar”, according to her devoted trainer, and will line up this Thursday night against Bobby Boucheau to decide who will wear the Big “V” in the Australian final at Albion Park later this month.

Tania Two Shoes came out running and waltzed away with a Grade 5 sprint event last Thursday night at Sandown Park. Raced and trained by Andrew Stewart of Melton, the fast breaker scooted around the 515 metres circuit in a new 29.76 PB.

Lauren Gorman and Kinga Will, who provided the Peter Giles kennel with the second leg of a 595 metres double last week at Sandown Park. The kennel was successful earlier in the evening with the luckless Timmy Woodcock, who deserved his first victory over the middle distance in 34.76.

GREYHOUND OF THE MONTH – JULY 2011 Greyhound of the month for July was Hannah McLaren for trainer Don Foster. July’s award for Hannah McLaren made her the first greyhound in 2011 to take out multiple Greyhound of the Month awards after she was awarded the winner in May. Her month was highlighted by a scintillating performance in winning the rich Gawler Produce Final in early July. After being undefeated through the heat and semi final some thought that maybe box 5 in the final may bring the daughter of Bit Chilli and Nimuay Lass undone as she started an easing favourite however all doubts were cast aside shortly after the start when she pounced on the lead. She ran blistering times when out in front winning the feature final by

8½ lengths and stopping the clock at 30.34 only .11 outside Regional Image’s track record set in July of 2003. The Foster’s then headed to Angle Park with “Hannah” and easily won a Grade 6 event in a sizzling 29.72 however disappointed at her next start surprisingly finishing out of the placings in late July as an odds on favourite. In July Hannah McLaren only had the three starts for two wins with stakemoney of $14,360 bringing her career to 20 starts for 12 wins and 3 placings and over $47,000 in stakemoney. SA KENNEL CAPERS

HEATS of the National Sprint and Dis-tance Championships got underway at Angle Park last Thursday night, with two heats of the sprint and a single heat of the distance being run on a rain-affected track. DARK DUO maintained his early favoritism for the series when he took out the opening round of the sprint in fine style for trainer, Rob Harnas. Donning the yellow vest and starting $1.90 favourite, Dark Duo jumped nicely and showed good pace to cross the field and hold the early lead over Point Two Over. Showing the way by a couple of lengths over kennelmate, Point Two Over along the back straight, Dark Duo edged away to reach the top turn with a three lengths break. Rounding the final bend still three lengths clear of Point Two Over, Dark Duo finished well and increased the gap in the run to the judge. A son of Bombastic Shiraz and To-ken Whiz, he crossed the line three lengths ahead of Point Two Over in Best Of Night 29.78, with Rawson Reason running a good race in third place.

RANDOM TEST registered a training double for Harnas when he won heat two with a strong finish. Nicely drawn in box one and starting as the $1.70 elect, Random Test jumped safely but was outpaced early, settling down third behind the front running Where’s Cisco through the first turn. Improving to be second in the back straight, Random Test loomed up omi-nously and reached the top turn camped on Where’s Cisco’s heels. Railing past Where’s Cisco through the final bend and straightening for home a length clear, Random Test had to fend-off the fast finish of Sargent Trigga over the closing stages. The son of Collision and Camden Shiraz scored by three quarters of a length in 30.21, while Where’s Cisco hung on for third.

Mayhem in the distance KALDEN MAYHEM upset favourite, Sa-tanic Cash when he landed the only heat of the National Distance for trainer, Troy Murray. Drawn box seven, Kalden Mayhem ($3.20) began slowly then mustered speed, working his way into the picture through the first turn, where Wot Price Pete was in charge. Making good ground and taking the lead with a lap to run, Kalden Mayhem worked a couple of lengths clear passing the catching pen, with Satanic Cash last, about 15 lengths adrift. Leading by a single length over Wot Price Pete along the back straight, Kal-den Mayhem regained his two lengths break as they reached the top turn. Rounding the final bend three lengths clear of the leg-weary Wot Price Pete, Kalden Mayhem finished the race off well, holding at bay the fast finishing Satanic Cash in the run home. By Big Daddy Cool from Abbadale Gold, he cruised past the post two and a quarter lengths ahead of Satanic Cash in 43.65, with Forty Twenty making late ground in third place. The same seven runners contest Thursday night’s State Final. Zeppelin too zippy LED ZEPPELIN notched his sixth win from 11 starts at Angle Park last Thurs-day night by taking out the Mixed 2nd/3rd/4th Grade for trainer, Lesley Ser-mon. Nicely drawn in box three and start-ing at $2.70 behind race favourite, Tesla

($2.40), Led Zeppelin jumped fast but was outpaced by Woodside Woody be-fore settling second through the first turn. Tracking Woodside Woody by a cou-ple of lengths in the back straight, Led Zeppelin was sticking close to the leader as they reached the top turn, still sepa-rated by just two lengths. Trying hard to bridge the gap and straightening for home just over a length off the pacesetter, Led Zeppelin finished powerfully, overhauling Woodside Woody over the closing stages. The son of Collide and Friendly Avia-tor defeated the gallant Woodside Woody by over a length in 30.26, with Tesla a close third. Hannah takes honour HANNAH McLAREN was rewarded for her strong efforts last month when named the SA Greyhound of the Month for July. Trained by Don Foster, Hannah McLaren had three starts during July for two brilliant wins… the first in the Pro-duce Stake final at Gawler when she led all the way from box five in a sensational 30.34. Hannah McLaren’s other win for the month came in a Grade 5 at Angle Park when she led all the way from box eight to record Best Of Night 29.72. The first chaser to win multiple Grey-hound of the Month awards this year, having secured the award for May, Han-nah McLaren was also awarded the Run of the Month for July for the 30.34 Pro-duce final victory. Other chasers to win a Greyhound of the Month award so far this year are Sa-tanic Cash, Goosebumps, Brahma Boy and Dark Duo. Top Dog MURRAY BRIDGE TRAINER, Shaun Matcott holds an almost unassailable advantage in the Leading SA TAB Trainer with 171 winners to the end of July. Petar Jovanovic, who’s second, is ineligible for the award and currently has his license dis-qualified. Troy Murray is having a good year and is currently third with 68, while Kim Johnstone is fourth on 55. Don Turner shows the way in the Leading SA Non-TAB Trainer with 9 wins so far, that’s three clear of Gary Pidgeon (6), with Marion Lanyon next on 5. Scull Murphy has a slight break in the Leading SA Stud Dog with 17 winners, three clear of Dr. Van Loon (14) and third placed Emerley Carlos (12). Tilka Lee shows the way in the Leading SA Brood Bitch with 28 winners, Nimuay Lass is hot on her heels with 25, followed by Corrumbene Lass third on 22.

THIS WEEK’S State Final of the Na-tional Distance Championship looks to be a cracking affair, judging by the sin-gle heat run at Angle Park last Thursday night. With the same seven runners in the race as last week, the odds are likely to be a lot closer this Thursday night after Kalden Mayhem lowered the colours of Satanic Cash. KALDEN MAYHEM has drawn well in box one, and with three wins from four starts over the journey for trainer, Troy Murray, he has strong claims. A moderate beginner who warms up quickly and is capable of running record splits, Kalden Mayhem will be looking to open a big break on Satanic Cash in the middle stages. Already a runner up in a Group 2 Gold Cup at Wentworth Park, Kalden Mayhem is probably the only chaser in the field that stands between Satanic Cash having a second crack at a Na-tional Grand Final.

SATANIC CASH lost no admirers when finishing second last week after making up the best part of a dozen lengths over the last 300 metres, having dropped to the rear of the field early from his unsuitable draw of one. Trained by Bob Isaacson, Satanic Cash has drawn much better with box four in the final and will be looking to add to his incredible record of 21 wins from 27 starts over the 731 metres trip. Runner up behind Blue Lorian in last year’s National Grand Final, Satanic Cash will win if he stays in touch with the field early but would not want to give Kalden Mayhem a 15 lengths head start this week.

FORTY TWENTY has been a model of consistency over the 731 me-tres since coming to SA, with his SA CV showing three wins and six placings

from nine starts, while his third placing in last week’s heat was another typical effort. Trained by Lesley Sermon, Forty Twenty will run another strong dour race in the final but will need Kalden Mayhem and Satanic Cash to find trouble if he’s to win the race.

WOT PRICE PETE has been a power to behold over the 515 metres and 600 metres distances, with nine wins from 10 starts before his fourth place in last week’s heat when on debut over the half-mile trip. Trained by Mick Giniotis, Wot Price Pete will probably find the early lead from box seven in this week’s final, how-ever, will find the going tough over the final stages with so much strength in the race.

SAMANTHA McLAREN went into last week’s heat with four wins from six starts over the distance but found the going tough against the state’s best stayers, finishing fifth. Trained by Don Foster, Samantha McLaren is a talented youngster with ability but a place finish looks to be her best chance in the final.

ELENA McLAREN will take her place in the final for trainer, Helen Fos-ter, but will need sharp improvement on her sixth place heat finish. A veteran of only two races over the distance for no placings as yet, Elena McLaren has box six in the final and looks to be well held.

HURLEY’S KIST rounds out the seven finalists and looks well held on his last place finish in the heat when a 100/1 chance. Trained by Peter Hurley, she’s a winner of two races from seven at-tempts over the distance but is not hopeless, and with box eight in the final, this looks too rich. - Paul Rehman

I also heard he’s a bit of a “tea-leaf” (that’s thief in rhyming slang).

I hear he took a fancy to Carolyn’s half eaten steak sandwich and decided to help himself to his share.

Mind you, he could have bought his own; as he’d just pocketed $90,000 by taking out the Shepparton Cup.

And he earned it too; they really made him win it.

Aston Galilee early, then Mystic Ap-ple at the end, made the son of Where’s Pedro and Elgrando Gold work through-out, with the champ having to dig really deep to claim his third Provincial Cup for the year.

Anyway, El Grand Senor passed half a million dollars in prizemoney and moved to second behind High Earner on the Australian Stakemoney table.

El Grand Senor was not nominated for the Nationals, and a few people thought that was a sign that he was to be retired again.

But as far as I know, he’ll probably keep racing.

I think that seeing as he’s so close to the record and still young and racing in great form, you wouldn’t want to go to your grave wondering “would he have got it”.

And if you want to think about the fact that he’s brilliant on the big horse-shoe type tracks, with the Ballarat and Geelong Cups still to come.

Oh hang on, he’s a star at The Mead-ows too, and there’s a TOPGUN coming up.

Didn’t he win that last year? Speaking of last year, didn’t he land

the Melbourne Cup? My view is this: This dog is capable

of becoming the first greyhound in the world to win a million dollars in prizemoney.

He currently has $581,335 in the

bank. The four races I’ve just mentioned

above carry total first prizemoney of $405,000 this year, plus in three you will probably need to win a heat to make the final.

Let’s see; $581,335 plus $405,000 equals $986,335.

The prizemoney from the heats might top that over a million.

Is there anyone out there brave enough to say with certainty that the above scenario isn’t possible for this dog?

Of course, that would then give him something else in common with Rapid Journey, and that’s setting a prizemoney record that may stand for a real long time. Check out second DO YOU remember my rule with fast times?

If a dog runs a real fast time or a track record and there’s a doubt in your mind about its accuracy, the best way to verify the time is to check out the second dog.

At Sandown on July 28 in the open-ing race, Gold Coast Gazza zoomed around in 29.31 to score by six lengths.

The time seemed extremely fast to most.

For the record, Gold Coast Gazza was having just his fifth start.

His debut run was a Sandown win in 30.17 on a slow track where the BOD was 30.04.

BOD, that’s four days earlier, going more than 10 lengths slower than the 29.31.

Incidentally, his only other run on the track resulted in a 20¼ lengths last in 30.05 where the BON was 29.53, but in fairness, he was flattened numerous times.

Anyhow, back to the near-record run, and as I said earlier, he scored by six lengths.

That means the second dog has recorded around 29.67 which just hap-pens to be .57 (nine lengths) quicker than he’d ever run there before.

He had a PB of 30.24 achieved in one of his three runs on the track, whilst his times in his other two efforts were approximately 30.27 and 30.85.

If you want to take it one step further, the third dog was a further length and a half away, which means he posted 29.76; his only other effort was 30.16.

I will point out that the Steward’s Report said: “The official time of 29.32 (sic) was also confirmed by the Judges official hand timing on the event.”

Anyhow, you have the figures, you decide! Very interesting FOLLOWING on from the previous piece, there was something that I found very interesting in the Steward’s Report on that race.

It said; “Stewards spoke to Mr. R. Britton, the trainer of Gold Coast Gazza regarding the greyhound’s performance tonight.

Mr. Britton advised Stewards that the greyhound was relatively young and inex-perienced (5th start this event) but was surprised by the greyhound’s perform-ance, in particular the 1st split time of 5.02.”

Firstly, what’s interesting is that ac-cording to GRV’s official results, the first split was taken by number eight (Madge Allsop).

The second part that I guess is very interesting is that had anyone bothered to do the sums that were displayed in the previous piece called “Check out second”, you wouldn’t have been asking the win-ning trainer anything at all.

But perhaps I’m just too logical for that! Another first four WE MUST get runs on certain things because you may recall a couple of weeks ago, I reported to you about Graeme Jose’s ‘first four’ finish with litter-mates at Cranbourne.

Well at Warragul on July 26 in the ninth race, the Selleck family provided a ‘first four’ finish.

The littermates, all owned by Cyril Anderson, were from Big Daddy Cool out of Token Excuse, and they filled the first four placings in the ninth race, a 400 me-tres Maiden.

Victory went to Charge It, who came from box three at $9.50 to defeat Batten Rouge in the green vest at $11.20, with Fortune Ate ($27.50) out of box five run-ning third. whilst number two, Just Sioux Me finished fourth.

First and second were trained by Jodie Selleck, with Debbie Selleck pre-paring the third runner, whilst Brian had Just Sioux Me, who ran favourite at $2.70.

The divvies were: Quinella $16.30, Exacta $103.50, Trifecta $327.70 and the First4 $407.80.

Hope the family had something on it! Great to see IT WAS great to see Shimaguni score her first Group win when she took out the AWM Distance Championship at The Meadows. It’s been no secret that we’ve had an extremely high opinion of her right from day one, and it’s always nice to see a dog you’ve “followed” from the beginning achieve success in a top grade race.

If you recall, Shimaguni came through that GRV VBIS Maiden Series at Sandown earlier in the year, and proving how valuable those events are at produc-ing “tomorrow’s” stars, the runner up in the AWM, Echelon also contested that same series. It’s great when the form stacks up.

Shimaguni is now having a crack at the Nationals, and she’ll again get the chance to match motors with Echelon, his brother, Granduer and current Sandown Cup champion and track record holder, Bobby Boucheau.

A couple of other stayers that con-tested the AWM are there too, they being

Bramley and Lady Arko. Sadly, only 14 stayers nominated,

but I‘m certain whatever dog gets through will do “us” proud because there’s nothing wrong with the quality. Well speculated THE Maturity final was a case of “girls rule”, and so did the Wheeler/Bate combo too it seems.

Over the past few weeks I’ve been looking at the series, and Shereen Bale proved superior in the heats, semi-finals and the final by running BON’s each time to score.

No one could begrudge any grey-hound that has done that a well deserved victory.

The fact she was a girl against the boys made her win even more meritori-ous, plus having to deal with box eight in the final, what more can you say?

Again, the form around that second Laurels final has stacked up.

Black Saharrah, a finalist in that Lau-rels, made the Maturity final, and if you remember, Shereen Bale was runner up in the Ladies Bracelet at Wentworth Park and the WA Oaks, and both times to Ton-neli Bale, also a Laurels finalist.

The other thing about this year’s Maturity was the way the Paul Wheeler (and family) greyhounds performed.

The best part for Paul was to get one-two in the final, with Stefan Bale acquitting himself extremely well to pick up second prizemoney.

And what about that man… Graeme Bate?

There’s just no stopping his run, and of course as we now know, preparing the quinella in the Maturity is just another feather in his cap. Cup and record TONNELI BALE, she just keeps getting better. She zipped up to Darwin to contest the Group 3 Cup and after running a track record in a heat, broke that time to land the final.

When you dish-out awards, any grey-hound that breaks their own track record goes into a rather elite club. And if you happen to run a track re-cord to win a major race, there’s another elite group you can join. Again, yet another great greyhound in the Wheeler/Bate “colours”… and a bitch as well. I rate this one very highly indeed, and I’ll stick by my view that if she ever switches to staying at some point, she may just wind up Australia’s best half-miler.

Of course, she may just end up Aus-tralia’s No. 1 sprinter yet, as she’s con-testing the Victorian leg of the National Sprint Championship. Banana benders WE LOVE calling Queenslanders “Banana Benders”, but I tell you what, just at the moment they might be the red hot favourites to provide both National champs.

Besides the obvious home-track ad-vantage that their representatives will have, they also happen to have a couple of chasers that are well in contention on their overall ability.

We’ve mentioned Dashing Corsair before, but apart from nominal favourite, he’d have to be sentimental favourite.

And why can’t he win it? He loves Albion Park, he’s the track

record holder there and he’s in brilliant form.

And many will say he deserves it. No arguments here. But they also have a sprinter in

Queensland with a real lot going for her. Velocity Regina also loves Albion

Park and handed in a great run in the Darwin Cup by running Tonneli Bale to a half length in the final, so we know she’s in form and she’s trained by one of Aus-tralia’s best, Tony Brett.

And I daresay that at the moment she must certainly be well in the market to take out the NSC. Huge plunges IN DAYS gone by, there have been some huge plunges on greyhounds. The “Irish” Tote at Warrnambool was great in pre TAB days.

I had a dog in one night and the owner came along for the ride. He wasn’t “up to speed” on just how the on-course Tote worked. Finding our dog at 5/4 with the book-ies, he decided that the Tote would be a better option.

So he put $150 on for the win. And win she did. After some time, the divvies were

declared, 50 cents for the win and $28.00 for the place.

A friend’s wife had $1.00 each-way on her and collected $57.00.

She was the real winner. I ended up all right too, my $60 on

the bookies returned me $150, as I got 6/4.

Anyhow, if you use the logic that the place divvy is around a quarter of the win divvy; that could have meant my bitch was at $112.00 for the win before the owner backed her.

Jokingly, I’ll claim that as a record. But a guy I knew takes the award in

orchestrating the cleverest plunge. He had a dog in at a bush track,

same deal there, an on-course Tote and bookies.

Being told the bookies wouldn’t hold much, he had a swag of dough he wanted on his dog; he couldn’t see it losing.

Anyhow, before leaving home, he put it all on with the SP’s.

At the track, his race was the ninth and his luck was in; he just kept backing winners all night.

All cashed up, he asked his mate to use some of his winnings to punt his own dog.

The money went on at 2/1 with the only bookie on the track, which then re-sulted in “Satchel Swinger” twiddling the knobs into 1/10.

The dog won. The trainer I heard had a $200 collect

on his dog on-course, so he wasn’t too bad off.

But of course the SP was 1/10, and that’s what he got for his large investment with the SP’s, a healthy 10%.

Still, it was better than bank interest. Got a good one like the above two

Microchips MICROCHIP TECHNOLOGY for animal identification was first introduced in the 1980s and has developed over the years into the injectable chip or transponder used today.

They are routinely used worldwide to identify animals.

The microchip provides permanent irrefutable proof of identification, without any form of scarring or disfigurement.

Microchip identification is a compulsory policy of most local councils, and greyhound racing authorities are adopting this identification method.

While microchipping has been a success for local government, it must be remembered that before the advent of microchipping there was no reliable means of identifying a stray dog.

Victoria is one of the first places in the world to introduce compulsory microchipping for its dog population.

And whilst there are many benefits, it should be remembered that the greyhound population have had an effective identification system that has certainly stood the test of time, and at the end of the transition there will be very little difference in either system.

Microchip technology is based on the use of scanners sending out a radio wave or electromagnetic field.

When a scanner comes into the proximity of a chip, the chip is energised by the radio wave and transmits its unique code back to the scanner.

The scanner LCD will then display the microchip number for a minute.

It is the scanner that does all the work!

They are known as Radio Frequency Identification Devices or RFIDs.

A microchip is the size of a large grain of rice, encased in a biocompatible glass, which should be covered by a thin coa t i ng to encourage t i ssue encapsulation.

These coatings are used in human pacemaker and prosthetic surgery, and used to prevent rejection of the item and speed up the bonding process with the tissues.

The coating forms an irregular surface, which allows the tissue fibres

within the animal to bond and grow around the microchip holding it in place.

Early reports on the greyhound population that have been microchipped over the past months suggest that the rate of microchip migration is much higher than would be expected.

Approximately one in four seem to be moving to areas other than where they were placed.

More concerning is that some seem to have disappeared altogether and had to be redone.

Greyhound Racing Victoria has deflected concerns from veterinarians by accusing them of “operator error”.

The incidence of migration and complete loss suggests a more scientific and investigative response may be required. The coatings are well tested and any adverse reactions are reported on.

The incidence of adverse reactions is extremely rare, and those that are investigated by reputable scientific journals invariably find a culprit other than the microchip.

ROB HARNAS looks to hold all the aces in this week’s SA State Final of the National Sprint Championship, as Dark Duo, Random Test, Stove Rocks and Point Two Over give him four good chances.

DARK DUO will start the de-serving favorite after winning a heat in a good 29.78 over Sargent Trigga on a very wet track. A winner of 17 races from 24 starts on the track, Dark Duo has been the SA’s best sprinter this year, and with box three in the final, he will take a power of beating. A safe beginner with great mid-race pace and a strong finish, Dark Duo will just have to stay safe in the early part of the race. and with mod-erate beginners around him he should do just that.

RANDOM TEST ran a good race when winning the second heat in 30.21, and with 15 wins from 29 starts on the track, he’s always a strong chance in any race he contests. A fair beginner who loves to run home strongly along the rail, Random Test has come up with the suitable draw of two in the final but will need a little bit of luck. with Honky Tonk Girl in box one likely to push wide in the early stages.

POINT TWO OVER ran home well when finishing second behind Dark Duo in a heat last week and has come up with the same draw of eight in the final. A super-honest chaser with lots of ability and 11 wins from 41 starts on the track, Point Two Over has claims again in the final but will have to do things the hard way from his wide draw, so a place looks best.

STOVE ROCKS is the fourth of Rob Harnas’ runners in the race and will start from box four after finish-

ing fourth to Random Test in a heat last week. A wide runner who charges home over the closing stages, Stove Rocks should give good cover to Dark Duo early, but with a clear run and a roughly run race, he could add to his honest record of fi8ve wins from 16 starts on the track.

RAWSON REASON is still on the come back trail after spending a year off with a bad injury, and his third place finish to Dark Duo in a heat was just his fourth start back. Trained by Don Foster, Rawson Reason is a talented chaser with 12 wins from 34 starts on the track, and although drawing poorly with box five in the final, he still looks a strong place chance and could surprise.

SARGENT TRIGGA is another strong chaser in the race, who ran on well when finishing second to Ran-dom Test in a heat. Trained by Lesley Sermon, Sar-gent Trigga has drawn poorly with box six in the final but will be run-ning on strongly over the concluding stages when looking to add to his strong record on the track of nine wins from 34 starts.

WHERE’S CISCO led early be-fore tiring to finish back third in an-other of the heats that Random Test won, but with box seven in the final, the bold front runner looks drawn to lead once again. Trained by Narvette Treloar,

Where’s Cisco loves a wide draw and has pace to burn early, but with such strong runners in the race he will need to pinch a good break if he’s to add to his good record of 16 wins from 38 starts on the track. HONKY TONK GIRL is the only bitch in the final and has drawn well in the event and will exit the coveted rails alley.

Trained by Bruce Lellmann, Honky Tonk Girl is a fair beginner and strong finisher but will need to do everything right in this company to have any chance of adding to her re-cord of seven wins from 25 starts on the track.

Reserves in the race are Adjust for Lesley Sermon and Aston Elite for Troy Murray.

THE FIRST TWO NIGHTS had suggested that this could be a quite special ladbrokes.com Irish Derby, but it went into orbit in the second last of the 25 heats on Saturday night at Shelbourne Park as Razldazl George produced one of those remarkable performances that are only witnessed once in the proverbial full moon.

Picture the scenario… Dublin is virtu-ally submerged in a late afternoon,/early evening deluge, and we drive through half-flooded roads to reach the Mecca of the sport.

We witness high class greyhounds such as Melodys Royal and Colorful Champ turning in foot-perfect performances and yet struggling to return times such as 30.33 and 30.35 respectively, comfortably 60 or more spots behind what they would be capable of doing on any normal night.

The announcement then arrives that the Stewards have decided that the going is being rated at .30 slow.

It is greeted with loud guffaws and, despite the drying conditions and regular rolling through the night, the times remain very ordinary.

Even Derby champion, Tyrur McGuigan does everything right and yet clocks 30.36, all of 85 spots slower than his time in last year’s Derby final triumph.

In the very next race, Razldazl George occupies the inside box. He looks a cer-tainty to beat his four rivals – Coolard Chief and his appointed reserve were missing – and then produces a real stunner.

The renowned from-behind performer takes an absolute screamer from the inside box, is lengths clear around the bend from Soviet Marco and draws further and further clear all the way to win by an extending 11 lengths in 29.88.

The official going description tran-scribes this as a 29.58 run – forget it, this is a run that wouldn’t be far short of College Causeway’s sensational 2009 Derby run of 30.21.

After racing, Dolores Ruth and Liam Marks were still trying to take it in.

“Unbelievable,” whispered Liam, but he too realises there are bigger tasks ahead, particularly when the going gets tougher

and the admirable George has to turn third or fourth into the back straight!

But what a hand the Ruth and Dazzling Syndicate team have in this year’s Derby.

Six survivors from a seven-strong start-ing team, and all six are sons of the remark-able Razldazl Pearl.

Amongst the absolute leading contend-ers is Jayfkay, Bugatti, Makeshift and George, now the new 9/1 favourite with Ladbrokes – and not forgetting Barack and Kingo.

No wonder the Rathangan based lass had a grin as broad as O’Connell Street on her face as she waited for the draw to be made afterwards!

Multiply the Ruth team by two and a half and you come up with the number of survivors that PJ and Conor Fahy have from their original entry of 18.

And don’t run away with the idea that because reigning champion, Tyrur McGui-gan was some 48 spots behind Razldazl George on Saturday night that he has no chance of retaining his title.

Believe me, this dog is going to take the world of beating in this classic again, with his early pace another of the glowing memories of Saturday’s action.

Remember, he had to beat accom-plished sprinter, Barefoot Admiral to the bend, and he achieved this with more than a modicum of authority.

He eventually won by two lengths from six-bend star, Express Trend, but the cham-pion will improve with each outing and his early pace will be even more effective when he is not dealing with a rain-sodden track.

PJ Fahy was effusive in his praise for McGuigan afterwards, but he was almost breathless after getting the fright of his life with Tyrur Big Mike in the concluding heat.

For once, Big Mike missed the start and looked an absolute “gonner” when he checked very wide on the opening bend.

A mixture of good fortune and tremen-dous resilience then came to Big Mike’s aid.

On the second bend, fast starting Crossfield Kurt led from Colourful Bolt, but the latter then badly hampered the leader off the second bend and was subsequently disqualified.

Suddenly, Mozzletoff and Barefoot Bullet were now disputing the lead, and the latter would obviously outstay the Oaks runner-up over the trip.

This he did, as he led on the third bend where suddenly Tyrur Big Mike could be seen making up huge ground in behind and moved to third turning for home. Barefoot Bullet went on to win by two lengths from Mozzletoff in 30.61, with Tyrur Big Mike a length and a half third.

The Fahy team had a treble on the night, which was initiated by Tyrur Lucky in heat 19 when he led all the way for a seven lengths verdict over Maggies Whistle in an admirable 30.19.

The second leg was provided by Tyrur Monicam as she overtook Aranock Hand on the third bend in heat 22 and held on gamely by three parts of a length from Slick Hawk in 30.62, with the Dean Childs trained Pennys Viking a half length third.

Paul Hennessy, who had endured dreadful luck in the first two sessions, en-joyed much better fortune on this occasion as he also completed a three-timer.

Colorful Champ set it up in heat 16 when leading all the way for a convincing four and a half lengths margin over Lough-view Gem, and in the following race, Hello Ringo ran second for much of the way but came through in the straight to beat long time leader, Tyrur Richie by a length in 30.35.

Then came Barefoot Bullet in that eventful final heat.

Patsy Byrne was present to see his Melodys Royal produce a very efficient victory in heat 15.

He broke fast from six and led all the way for a very convincing three and a half lengths margin over Royal Patrol in 30.33.

Elsewhere, John McGee’s Cian Jamie came a second time to beat Varra Captain by a neck in 30.43 in heat 14, while Helen Cashin’s Smooth Daddy maintained a very impressive strike rate as he led all the way in heat 18, beating Cian Abbey by five lengths in 30.26.

Jerry Melia was just deprived of a smashing litter double, with Head Rock soon leading in heat 20 to beat Paddy De-sign by five lengths in 30.50, while litter sister, Nikitas Scut led for 548 yards when pipped a head by Gerry Holian’s Starry Messenger in 30.62 in heat 21. Second round draw RAZLDAZL GEORGE will once again oc-cupy the inside trap in the second round, but his task in heat 10 on Saturday night will be much tougher than his first round heat.

Amongst his rivals will be slick starting, inside-loving Tyrur Henry in two, Oaks win-ner, Droopys Twirl in four and Oaks runner-up, Mozzletoff in six, while the very capable Cabra Legend will wear the orange jacket.

Heat 12 looks a lively affair, with Razldazl Jayfkay in five and also in there are Tyrur Domingo and heat winners Air Force Roger, Ballymac Razl and Barefoot Bullet.

Reigning champion, Tyrur McGuigan looks to have a very handy task in the con-cluding heat 16 and will be the hottest fa-vourite of the round.

Last year’s runner-up, Tyrur Big Mike also got away pretty well with a six draw in a relatively ordinary opening heat.

Razldazl Bugatti won many admirers in the first round and will be a very hot order for heat 3 on Thursday.

Another heat to whet the appetite is the

ninth on Saturday where the line-up is com-prised of Makeshift, Meadow Bank Owl, Rockchase Zico, Pablo Supreme, Slippery Bob and Krug Ninety Five. Cracking one step from glory GRAHAM HOLLAND’S Cracking Man main-tained his tremendous career pattern when justifying favouritism of 8/13 in the semi-final of the Bar One Racing Irish Sprint Cup at Dundalk on Saturday.

The son of Skywalker Ace and Cen-tenarys Jo has now won 10 of his 12 races, and this time had a length and a half in hand of Shoemakers Lad in 21.39, with Hi There Rocky some three lengths back in third.

Last year’s Irish Derby winner, Tyrur McGuigan still shows he has what it takes to win the historic greyhound race. The son of Brett Lee and Tyrur Temptress started an 1/1 favourite in his 30.36 heat win on August 6 on a track which was officially classified as slow.

Ballymac Razl on his way to wining on opening night of the 2011 Ladbrooke’s sponsored Irish Derby series at Shelbourne Park on August 3. The son of Razldazl Billy and Ballymac Floss started at 6/1 and hit the line in 29.64.

Bawna Storm, (Westmead Hawk—Bawna Emily) was a 12/1 outsider in his 29.91 Irish Derby heat win in 29.91.


In the week from July 19 to July 25 there were 13 litters registered with GRV.

VELOCETTE (Bombastic Shiraz x Texan Lady) sired a litter of four dogs and three bitches from Inex-haustable whelped March 29 that was registered by Murrumbateman breeder, Mark Scholes.

Inexhaustable, a daughter of Hal-lucinate and Glen Abbey Jewel, started 29 times for eight wins, scor-ing at Canberra over 530 metres in 30.67 and over 520 metres at Young in 30.82.

She won over 520 metres at Bathurst in 30.37 and twice at Goul-burn over 457 metres with a PB of 25.93.

She was successful at Wentworth Park over 520 metres in 30.50 and twice at Richmond over 618 metres with 35.70 being her quickest.

The other successful members of her litter were Chief Ringo (2 wins) and House Keeping (5 wins).

The dam, who had plenty of abil-ity, comes from a successful line, which puts the future of these young-sters in very good stead.

Knocka Norris URAIDLA breeder, Craig Arthur registered a litter by Knocka Norris (Elite State x Oriental Angel) from Fly High and the four dogs and four bitches were whelped February 24.

Fly High, a daughter of Gable Lafourche and Camplin’s Gold, won nine of her 28 starts, all at Angle Park over 515 metres for a 30.13 PB.

The other members of her litter were Gable Roxx (3 wins), Gold Re-ality (4 wins), Lafourche’s Gold (2 wins), Misscara (2 wins) and Predict (5 wins).

Fly High has had one litter to race so far and that was to Surf Lorian whelped September 2008, producing Is It Gunnamatta (3 wins), Swell Pur-suit (2 wins), Touch The Clouds (1 win) and Vanilla Gorilla (2 wins).

The dam had plenty of potential and is already proven, suggesting that these youngsters should be make their presence felt on the track.

Talk’s Cheap TALK’S CHEAP (Spiral Nikita x Leprechaun Yap) sired a litter of three dogs and three bitches from Petroy’s Fortune whelped March 21, registered by Pearcedale breeder, Ron Partington. Petroy’s Fortune, a daughter of Brett Lee and Shirl The Girl, raced 57 times scoring in four of those, suc-cessful twice at Cranbourne over 311 metres with a PB of 18.48 and a win over 450 metres at Ballarat in 26.08, as well as scoring at Cannington over 530 metres in 31.38.

The other members of her litter were Ate Lee Ate (1 win), Lee Max (7 wins), Scrapper (1 win) and Tim-lee Boy (3 wins).

This litter combines Brett Lee with Leprechaun Yap, which suggests these youngsters should taste plenty of success on the track too.

Where’s Pedro DEVON MEADOWS breeder, Robin Moore registered a litter by Where’s Pedro (Brett Lee x Elusive Rebel) and the one bitch whelped April 12 is from Beachside Babe. The dam, a daughter of Token Prince and So Awesome, started 18 times for seven wins, notching a vic-tory at Ballarat over 450 metres in 25.71 and scoring twice at Cran-bourne over 520 metres with a PB of 30.38.

She won at Sandown over 515 metres in 29.82 and twice at Sale over 520 metres with 29.73 being her best, as well as winning at Horsham over 480 metres in 27.24.

The other members of her litter were Buck’s Chance (7 wins), Four Walls (6 wins), Jakoby (3 wins), Kingston Belle (14 wins) and Pull The Trigger (1 win), whilst a previ-ous pairing produced Divide And Rule (6 wins), Kingston Royale (16 wins), So Blessed (11 wins) and Ves-pera (3 wins).

The dam comes from a great line, which suggests that this young-ster should have a breeding career once she finishes racing.

Premier Fantasy PREMIER FANTASY (Premier County x Nifty Niamh) sired a litter of three dogs and three bitches whelped April 6 from Quiet Girl, registered by Southern Cross breeder, Garry Elliott.

Quiet Girl, a daughter of Token Prince and Quiet Whisper, won eight of her 26 starts, picking up four wins at Warrnambool over 450 metres with a PB of 25.38 and a win at Horsham over 480 metres in 27.33.

She saluted at Sandown over 515 metres in 30.13 and twice at The

Meadows over 525 metres where 30.35 was her fastest.

Quiet Girl was the only member of her litter.

Quiet Girl has had one litter to date and that was to Where’s Pedro whelped March 2009, producing Pharo Black (2 wins).

The dam had plenty of ability and her only pup has scored, which au-gurs very well for the future of these youngsters. Bombastic Shiraz BOMBASTIC SHIRAZ (Black Shi-raz x Bombastic Blonde) sired a litter of two dogs and three bitches whelped April 19 from Black Caviar, registered by Justin Illman, Manager of the Prime Park Racing Syndicate.

Black Caviar is an unraced daughter of Brett Lee and Leprechaun Yap, whilst the other members of her litter were Engine (10 wins), Gutter Black (9 wins), Lizzy Lee (9 wins), Nando Torres (16 wins) and Seeing Ghosts (5 wins).

Molly Grace, a daughter of Whisky Assassin and Born Lucky, scored in nine of her 79 goes, win-ning over 390 metres at Warrnambool in 22.33, twice over 450 metres there with a PB of 25.79, at Horsham over 480 metres in 27.55 and at The Meadows over 525 metres in 30.71.

She picked up two wins at San-down over 515 metres with 29.92 being her fastest, plus a win at Healesville over 340 metres in 18.84 and over 450 metres at Shepparton in 25.57.

The other members of her litter were Born Charlie (1 win), Born Louie (10 wins) and Born Princess (7 wins).

The dam, who had plenty of tal-ent, is part of a successful line, which tells us that these youngsters should pick up their share of races too.

Velocette MARCUS HILL breeder, Barry Moloney registered a litter by Velo-cette (Bombastic Shiraz x Texan Lady) and the seven dogs and three

bitches whelped April 6 are from Mojo Glory. The dam, a daughter of Jack Jun-ior and Mint Mojo, won five of her 36 runs, scoring twice at Geelong over 457 metres with a PB of 25.93 and at Ballarat over 450 metres in 25.82. She picked up a win at Sandown over 515 metres in 30.21 and won over 525 metres at The Meadows in 30.35. The other successful members of her litter were All Mojo (10 wins), Mojestic (16 wins), Mojo Powers (7 wins), Mojo Thriller (10 wins), Mojo’s Pride (14 wins) and Special Sunrise (6 wins).

Mojo Glory has had one litter so far and that was to Collision whelped February 2009, leaving us Small En-counter (3 wins). The dam is beautifully bred from a litter that won 68 races and is al-ready proven, which says that these youngsters should have a very bright future on the track.

Talk’s Cheap TALK’S CHEAP (Spiral Nikita x Leprechaun Yap) was the sire chosen by Keysborough breeder, Paul Hili for Ceejay’s Vixen, and the two dogs and three bitches were whelped March 12.

Ceejay’s Vixen, by EJ’s Douglas from Advert, started 46 times for 13 wins, scoring six times over 515 me-tres at Sandown with a PB of 29.82 and three wins at Cranbourne over 520 metres where 30.29 was her fast-est.

She picked up a win at Warragul over 424 metres in 24.16, won over 440 metres at Sale in 25.29, had two wins at Traralgon over 513 metres where 29.63 was her best, plus a suc-cess at Healesville over 340 metres in 19.41.

She won four races at The Mead-ows over 525 metres with a PB of 29.93 and had a win at Wentworth Park over 520 metres in 30.43.

The other members of her litter were Advertising (18 wins), Bellarine Bob (8 wins), Bellarine Joe (4 wins), Ceejay’s Magic (4 wins), Dallas Gypsy (3 wins), Dallas Major (6 wins) and Elle Douglas (10 wins) whilst a follow up litter produced Adverse (2 wins), Red Factor (3 wins) and Tea Towel (4 wins).

Those readers with sharp eyes might be able to pick up that the gentleman in the left of the picture. Is none other than former MGRA Director, Andy Simpson when he attended coursing meetings in the role of a bookmaker. Also noticed the vehicle that pulled the trailer was a Jaguar. Others were Matt Cunningham and Bill Pollock

This photo of a greyhound in a small sulky harness was captured by former track photographer, the late Allan Quinn. It shows a trainer from Braybrook, Kevin ? Smith and the late Ken Carr during a National series at Olympic Park, which was sponsored by Arnott-Harper.

Track specialist: Striding Ahead had such a following at Olympic Park that she even managed to make the front page of The Sun. Her amazing success over the 560 yards trip saw her win 28 races, including a dozen in a row over her favourite distance. She was virtually unbeatable at the iconic track and was trained by Pat Haas of Pine Winds at Tynong.

The good old days: Live hare open coursing at South Purrumbete (near Camperdown) attracted the whole family, and this rare picture sent in to OTL by Michael Darcy, reminds us of just what our great grand folks did for entertainment on the weekends. It was a real social occasion. This meeting attracted three generations, and the obvious winner was unfussed with a youngster riding on his back. I don’t know if the old car fridge or “Esky” was around in those days, but the bloke on the far right gives another meaning to BYO. The keg or “ferkin” had the famous Carlton and United Breweries stamp but there didn’t appear to be any chilling equipment and most of the males seem to be enjoying a “frothie”, even the blokes on horseback.

Sadly a lot of these punters have passed on, but we did manage to identify some characters, including “John The Baptist”, Syd Hall, Lal Scurrah’s bagman, and Barney Labransky.


I HOPE the next generation of racecallers don’t become too staid in their profession.

Bryant, Collins, Martin, Miles and Tapp certainly had the ability to paint a picture for punters, and a golden opportu-nity went begging at a recent provincial meeting.

The unusually named Moo was en-gaged in a Tier 3 meeting at Shepparton and finished in arrears of the winner by nearly 10 lengths.

How come Moo didn’t get within a Bull’s Roar of the winner?

Maybe next time. And still on racecallers, there are a

couple of unusually named chasers going around that are tongue twisters which and can cause some problems.

“Happy” Hammon did his best to avoid calling Zlatan at Shepparton’s Mon-day evening meeting on August 1, but the Simone Fisher chaser stumped him in the call.

He remarked after the race, ”Murphy’s Law; it’ll always get you.” A national rules book DON’T be silly. The gaffs and stuff-ups continue to embarrass our sport and I can’t recall a year when so many “unfortunate inci-dents” have made greyhound racing au-thorities run and hide.

Dogs being pulled from the boxes whilst the lure is on it’s way, dogs running in bitch races, dogs wearing the wrong rugs and dogs not wearing rugs at all.

And not forgetting the long running saga of a greyhound withdrawn from the boxes without the trainer’s permission or presence.

The latter incident is not dead and buried as many people think, and I’m reliably informed that the NSW ombuds-man is taking up this case.

It makes you cringe, and maybe the saturation of our wall to wall racing might have something to do with these embar-rassing moments.

I wonder if anyone will dare to high-light them at their respective state GOTY functions in a “funniest home video” seg-ment.

Some think its funny, as both the Vics and Two Blues have been having more than a friendly dig at each other’s lack of surveillance at the tracks on all the major forum sites.

Even that perennial problem of not having the appropriate disc over the cor-rect box once again flared up, with the ninth event at Shepparton on July 21 not indicating that No. 3 Tiger’s Beauty, wouldn’t be taking part in the 650 metres event.

Don’t know what the answer is, but I reckon those punters who backed the ‘nude” vestless runner at Dapto on July

20 had their pants pulled down well and truly when the greyhound was disquali-fied from the event “for having an unfair advantage”.

Not worried about the explanation, only concerned that those who backed the dog and did their money cold, no refund.

Why it wasn’t declared a non-starter, which would have allowed punters to get their hard-earned returned, has got me baffled.

But once again we have a National set of Rules whereby everyone is reading from the same page, don’t we? Egg timer WITH respect to the Steve Shinners owned, Greg McLachlan trained Who’s Asner, I reckon the Beckley Park timing mechanism was on the nose when the youngster won her Maiden at the July 24 Sunday meeting.

What other explanation can be de-rived after the daughter of Where’s Pedro and Jules Asner scooted around the 460 metres trip in a creditable 26.33.

Not a bad time for a Maiden winner, but when you break down the splits, it’s hard to conceive that the timing device was working properly.

Who’s Asner, who had two previous runs at Cranbourne prior to her Beckley Park success, was credited with running 6.35 to the first sectional mark.

That’s high flyingn according to the astute form watchers, and a length inside blueblood Miss Trew Star’s benchmark of 6.41.

Now Miss Trew Star, a daughter of Premier Fantasy and Miss Mini Mouse, is an absolute flying machine, rarely led, as a matter of fact, has only been headed early in three of her 17 starts to date and was credited with the shorter 400 metres first split record at Sleepy Hollow back on April 3 and recently trimmed the Ballarat 450 metres split to 6.40 on June 15.

Admittedly, Miss Trew Star does tire in her races, but she is one serious fast breaker.

She even ran third in a heat of the Shepparton Cup, leading at both splits (6.49=B and 11.27) and anyone who knows their potatoes would realize those early sectionals are up there with the best

of them. Now to even consider Who’s Asner in

her league is sheer folly. What makes the time seem ridiculous

is that Who’s Asner clocked 6.35 early and then laboured to reach the second split in 11.48.

She must have dragged a ball and chain to register 11.48 then discarded it to get home in 26.33.

Miss Trew Star went 6.41 and 11.18 when she set her sectional record on May 27.

Pity those poor punters who tumbled in and backed Who’s Asner at her next start was over 450 metres at Ballarat’s Morshead Park on a cold Monday arvo meeting on August 1.

Drawn the five alley in a Grade 5 non-penalty, you can imagine the class of opposition she was pitted against.

Opened up a raging $2.20 favourite and drifted to $2.30 before starting offi-cially as the punters elect at $2.60.

Missed the start and was never going to challenge the winner, let alone run some hot sectional time.

She finished a well beaten seventh, 13 plus lengths from the winner in a se-date 25.83.

Her estimated first split was 6.95, well outside the sectional record at Bal-larat of 6.40.

Now this is not a crack at Who’s As-ner, just the ridiculous information ac-credited to her after her two lengths Gee-long Maiden win.

I wonder what legal grounds punters would have if they put forward a case that the only reason they backed her at Bal-larat was on the alleged sectional record at Geelong on July 24.

Hmm, like to know Slater and Gordon’s stance.

Do the sums, it doesn’t hold up. Then up at Morshead Park on July

20, Autoamerican won first up over the 550 metres trip.

Trained by Darren McDonald, the talent laden chaser, who won a GOBIS series at Warrnambool back in January this year, was credited as having broken

the first and second splits, running 11.52, or .04 inside the previous best of 11.56, then 16.31, a half length inside the previ-ous split of 16.34.

Sport 927 broadcaster, Ron Hawk-swell advised those on and off-course viewers and listeners at the end of the race that Autoamerican had recorded 30.75, but this time was later amended on the official results to 31.01, but no mention as to whether the splits had to be amended.

Methinks the latter. He went around the following week at

the same track over the same journey and naturally bolted in, but could only manage 31.24 this time, or .23 slower than what he registered on July 20.

His splits on this night revealed 11.85, and 16.74, much slower than 11.52, and 16.31 victory

But it doesn’t finish there. Glenview Park had problems (doesn’t

every club) with the camera equipment when the system failed to capture an image for events 1 – 7 on Friday night’s July 29 meeting.

How often have we seen this type of information tagged at the bottom of Stew-ards Reports.

On this night the judges decided the placings for these events with the use of the back-up video system and by their own observations.

I humbly suggest someone erase some of the details mentioned on the official results page for this meeting as it is quite laughable.

Race 1 didn’t have any splits, Race 4 missed the important third split and in Race 5, the first sectional is listed as 5.14, which is very, very fast.

Traralgon’s new safer Burrumbeet racing surface is now well and truly com-pacted, but I don’t think it is conducive to producing 5.14 first splits, especially when other leaders on the same program were hitting the same mark in 5.44, 5.45, 5.53 and 5.43.

Incidentally, Marmion holds the first split honours there with a flying 5.32.

But still the glitches continue.

The judges used the back-up system and their own observations at Warragul on August 2 when a perennial malfunc-tion affected the photo finish of the first event and failed to capture an image.

Ho hum. And I’ve lost count of the number of

times at Sandown Park when the timing mechanism doesn’t produce both splits for their 595 metres races.

Maybe the lure is triggering these excessively fast splits, but you don’t have be a “Clarence The Clocker” to realize that at Glenview Park and at Beckley Park, these times were a tad, just a tad out.

It’s alright collecting and collating all this data and throwing it at punters, but it becomes superfluous if its incorrect. New face at Logan Park GARRY ALLEN has held the reins at the Warragul Greyhound Racing Club for the past dozen years and has enjoyed a wonderful ride, where he and his commit-tee oversaw a huge financial turn-around.

Now a successful debt-free club, Allan has decided to stand down and allow some new blood to steer the ship.

Matt Height now assumes the role of President, whilst local trainer, Glenn Woods was co-opted onto to the commit-tee to fill Garry Allan’s vacancy until the next AGM later this year when he will stand at the elections for a permanent position.

Allen was buoyant his club was head-ing in the right direction and advised that the proposed 200 metres slipping track was still the club’s number one priority.

“We have been assured by our local member that land that runs along the creek in the back straight, and currently leased by a local pony club, will be allo-cated to the club and hopefully be up and running within 12 months.”

Bendigo’s Lord Raceway may be undergoing a facelift, but that doesn’t mean local trainers take a holiday. Long Gully resident, Karen Repia doesn’t mind travelling with her team and recently landed her first treble. Liquid Laugh and his litter brother, High Ignition, along with their younger half-sister, See See See, saluted at Shepparton’s August 1 Monday meeting. See See See, a daughter of Bush Legend and Iza Tora, was never headed when wining a Maiden event, the first race of 12 on the card. Her kennelmates, litter brothers High Ignition and Liquid Laugh, members of a Where’s Pedro and Iza Tora mating, won their respective Grade 5 races later in the night. Karen has a one acre property at Long Gully and her well deserved success gives many of the sport’s hobby trainers the confidence that they too can be competitive with the bigger kennels.

Graeme Bate may have landed the Group 2 Darwin Cup, but Mick Chilcott earned the bragging rights for these two beauties He hooked at the Top End. I can see a bigger team from Victoria heading north next year for the wonderful winter racing carnival that entices many visitors to Darwin.


IT TAKES a really special performance to steal the headlines on WA Sprint Champi-onship heats week, but that is what the 22 month-old bitch. Miata has achieved.

The Paul Stuart trained chaser re-wrote the record books at her third race start, taking a length off the time standard set by Velocette two years ago. A very handy field lined up for the provincial Grade 5 Final, with the track by no means fast.

Miata, by super sire, Bombastic Shi-raz out of champion producer, Winsome Bluebird, headed to the boxes at $2.10 favourite, with Linda Britton’s duo, Pre-mium Love and Moss Vale also in the market. Miata was away well but was checked by Shivine as Premium Love wanted to push out.

Shrugging-off the bump, Miata pushed up to lead by a length over a bunched field, clocking 5.75 early.

Moving through the catching pen Miata had opened a three lengths break on Regent Meteor and was starting to stretch out. A flying 18.74 was the time off the back as the future ‘Queen of Cannington’ increased her advantage to six lengths on Moss Vale, who was moving forward strongly.

Miata was turbo-charged in the run to the judge, clocking a staggering 11.12 final section to stop the timer at 29.86.

Runner-up, Moss Vale was 12 lengths adrift in the second fastest time of the night, even further highlighting the achievement of Miata. The red fawn bitch, owned by Nichole Wheeler-Whye, made it three wins from three starts and took her stakes to $4,500.

She won a Maiden in May in a record 30.18, before clocking 30.21 in her heat win the previous Wednesday. This Wednesday Miata again lines up against provincial Grade 5 company with only bad luck challenging her perfect record.

If she wins, the Centre for Cerebral Palsy will be $5,000 to the good, as Grey-hounds WA has pledged this money as part of Cerebral Palsy Awareness Week, which runs from August 1-7.

The donation will double in value if Miata betters her own track record. I caught up with Paul Stuart on Satur-day and asked him about his rising star.

“She broke-in brilliantly and has ma-tured into a quiet and perfectly behaved kennel dog.”

Miata was bred by Stuart from bril-liant producer, Winsome Bluebird, and a recent repeat mating to Bombastic Shiraz has netted one valuable pup.

Miata was reared and broken in by Brendan Wheeler.

Stuart continued, “She is mature and seasoned beyond her track experience and adapts quickly to the situation.”

“I have always thought she would break 30-seconds, but maybe not this soon.”

Track record holders don’t have many chinks in their armour, and Stuart believes the lack of early box speed to be the only one he has identified so far.

The trainer continued, “She came home in just over 11-seconds at her first Cannington trial, and I see a long-term future as a stayer.”

“If she continues in her current form, I may take her to Adelaide for the Oaks as her first trip away.”

“She is the best dog I have put a lead on.” Pedrosa fires up THE WEEK kept improving for Stuart with a double on Saturday night, and his champion chaser, Pedrosa clocked 30.04 to easily be the fastest qualifier for the WA Sprint Championship final.

Sent out at $1.30 favourite, he revved-up from seven on the grid and opened up in blistering fashion, putting two lengths on his rivals in a sensational 5.58 first section.

Tracking a couple wide through the first turn, as is his style, Pedrosa held the same margin over Big Jo King, who was prominent at his first run for a month, with five lengths to Avalanche Angel.

The champ was out by four lengths off the back in 18.76, with the placeget-ters unchanged in a spread out affair.

It was all Pedrosa in the run home, and the speedster racked-up a nine lengths win over Big Jo King, who held Avalanche Angel at bay by a length.

It was the 28th win from 44 starts for Pedrosa, who has won $204,000 for his owner trainer.

The opening heat saw the WA bred star, Vocal Enforcer sent out the $2.40 favourite, as he sought to book his place in Saturday’s $18,000 final.

The son of Black Enforcer and She’s Vocal didn’t disappoint supporters with a strong come from behind win in a very smart 30.28.

Fellow WA bred chaser, Bomber Command jumped brilliantly from box five to lead in 5.63 for trainer, Tony Williams.

We Paint Houses pushed up for sec-

ond on the rail, with Vocal Enforcer up to third as they entered the first turn.

Bomber Command was the lamp-lighter onto the back, holding a two length break over We Paint Houses, who tracked a couple off the rail on the turn, keeping the favourite third.

A length separated the lead trio off the back in 18.85, as Vocal Enforcer made his audacious move past We Paint Houses then ranged alongside Bomber Command to hit the lead turning for home.

Andrew McLaren’s charge, a strong 530 performer, ran away to score by four lengths over Rousay, who burst clear off the pack for second, shading the speed machine, Bomber Command by a half length.

It was the 16th win from 29 outings for the Peta and Rod Noden owned chaser, taking his earnings to $76,000.

IN AN OPEN affair, the second heat saw veteran, Brencole Bale a surprise $3.90 favourite, with Rock Pool ($4.20) continuing her affiliation with tricky middle box draws.

The Barry Thompson trained Olivia's Asset, who made a rare visit from Man-durah, was away brilliantly to lead the field into the first turn with a 5.65 sec-tional.

As they settled down along the back straight, Olivia’s Asset was still making play with a length lead over Brencole Bale and a couple of lengths to Rock Pool railing past Premium Love.

They were unchanged into the turn, however, Rock Pool railed through to challenge Brencole Bale as they straight-ened.

It was a tough tussle in the run to the line, with the 2010 WA Oaks winner, Rock Pool getting up by a nose to down a sensational Olivia's Asset in 30.36. Pickle Mickle WITH SMALL fields of five, the WA Dis-tance Championship heats were given the graveyards slots, Races 10 and 11, in a classic scenario of wagering considera-tions being given precedence to the im-portance of the races.

Before the first heat, the crowded venue with over 600 restaurant guests witnessed a stupid act by an individual, who trespassed onto the track in the clos-ing stages of Race 9.

The person was apparently clipped by the lure but escaped without serious injury.

Greyhounds WA CEO, David Simon-ette was angered by the incident, as too were many industry participants.

“There are laws of public nuisance and trespass that appear to have been broken and the matter is now in the hands of the WA Police.”

“The lure driver did a great job to minimize the potential damage to the individual.”

Twenty minutes later the field took to the track for the opening NDC State Heat that was taken out by the enigmatic Pickle Mickle in a quick 41.80.

Time To Speed ($1.70) was all the rage on the back of four straight Free To All wins, in which he had seen off his two main dangers, Pickle Mickle and Scuttle-butt.

Scuttlebutt was away well but was held out by Barney Stinson in the early going, and passing the judge the first time in 15.71 he held a neck lead over Scuttle-butt, with three lengths to Time To Speed and further couple to Pickle Mickle loping along fourth.

The lead quartet bunched together on the back straight before Pickle Mickle found a gap and burst through, putting three lengths on the pack in an instant and wrapping up the race on the third turn.

The Linda Britton trained son of Fly-ing Penske and Classy Creek extended his margin to five lengths at the judge, with Scuttlebutt second and Time To Speed qualified in fourth place but copped a 14 day injury stand down after the race.

THE SECOND heat saw Dan Biddle’s Kalden Athena break through for her first win over the journey at her fourth attempt.

An even jump saw Phase Three Ho on the paint, Kalden Athena and Jazzy Judy three wide contesting the early lead, with Biddle's charge breaking clear through the first turn.

With a circuit to travel Kalden Athena was employing catch me if you can tac-tics, running a handy 15.69 opening sec-tional and a four lengths lead on the pelo-ton.

But they never caught the daughter of Big Daddy Cool and Abbadale Gold, who extended her winning margin to seven lengths, recording 42.10. Better deal? RUMBLINGS of discontent continue in the industry with some leading owners and trainers pushing for what they con-sider to be a fairer distribution model for the WA racing participants.

Amongst other issues, it is argued that the current distribution model of RWWA does not give a fair return to grey-hounds, which is stagnating the develop-ment of the industry.

Anecdotal evidence continues to show a drop in numbers and the class of Saturday’s city race meeting, with short fields becoming a norm on the showcase night.

This issue appears to be hotting up as some of the leading figures in the WA racing industry are putting a marker in the sand in their push to secure the future of the greyhound industry.

A FANTASTIC WA Sprint Championship that’s packed with class and pace will be conducted this Saturday night at Can-nington that carries $18,000 and a trip to Brisbane as incentives.

Bomber Command in the cherry, Olivia’s Asset in three and Pedrosa in four are all likely to give the 5.60 first split a real push in the charge for the early lead.

With Bomber Command demon-strating a step to the right approach last Saturday, the connections of Vocal En-forcer (2) will be hoping he exits straighter this week.

chaser is due a slice of luck in a big race, and with a clean getaway looks to be the challenger to Pedrosa in the race to represent the West.

If successful, it will be back to back wins for Pedrosa in the WA Sprint Championship.

Another runner worthy of thought is Rousay.

The least experienced finalist, with 15 outings, is finding her way through the higher grades and battled on strongly for her come from behind plac-ing to Vocal Enforcer.

NO BOX DRAW was conducted for the WA Distance Championship, so select-ing a winner in a rare eight dog field is no mean task.

The form suggests David Hobby’s Time To Speed is the one to follow, but the Robert Greig owned dog will need to get the vet’s all clear to take his place in the field, having been slapped with a 14 day injury stand down.

Pickle Mickle, whilst clearly the fastest stayer in the field with a sizzling 41.69, is not a dog that you can follow

with great confidence. That said, I believe the final will be

won by either he or Scuttlebutt, who’s chances improve rapidly if she draws an inside box, and even more so if she can hit the lead early and try to run them off their legs.

Kalden Athena is an interesting proposition, however, as the classy bitch is finding the journey on her limit at this stage and is more likely to be a place-getter.

Highly promising sprinter, Miata ran a record breaking 29.86 when beating a Grade 5 field by 12½ lengths at Cannington’s midweek fixture.

Pickle Mickle missed the start but rallied to the front coming off the back and came away in a State Distance Heat to score easily in 41.80.

DESPITE NEVER taking out a Na-tional Sprint or Distance title, Tas-mania can be full of hope this year with their ace distance star, Ming Dynasty and their best sprinter, Damek both displaying Group 1 worthy performances on Monday night at Launceston.

Not even a rain-affected track could stop Ming Dynasty from se-curing her spot in the National Dis-tance Championship Grand Final with a classic come from behind victory.

With a similar scenario to her heat win last week, she found herself off the pace early, six lengths behind the leaders at the winning post a lap out.

However, with a clear run into the back straight and only one grey-hound to chase, Thirteen Black couldn’t hold the lead any longer, with Ming Dynasty zooming past to score by two lengths in 43.55.

Trainer, Susan Gittus will now

head to Albion Park on August 25 looking for consecutive win number seven with Ming Dynasty when she makes her interstate debut, looking to bring home Tasmania’s first Na-tional Distance title. By Chinatown Lad out of Bran-don Sky, Ming Dynasty’s bloodlines are no strangers to staying success, with half-sister, Miss Brook a multi-ple Group winner.

HAVING BEEN heavily backed last week and finishing a somewhat disappointing third, Tasmania’s crack sprinter, Damek was back to his usual best on Monday night with a determined display from box six, going one better than last year to secure his spot in the National Sprint

Championship final. After beginning midfield, the

winner of 37 races quickly mustered speed to sit behind leader, Ella Lucky for the majority of the race.

On the home turn he booted away, going on to score by five lengths in a solid 29.92 on a wet track. Trainer, Peter Phillips will be hoping his star boarder can produce a positive interstate performance after his previous record of just two interstate starts at The Meadows for two lasts.

Lady’s bonus Horsham August 2 MAGANDA LADY collected the GOBIS Bonus by taking out the 570 metres Maiden on Tues-day night.

Drawn in box five at $3.20, the daughter of Mogambo and Miss Jim scored by three and a half lengths over Sophfeera ($7.60), with a head to third placed Kerry’s Elle ($2.20 fav).

Maganda Lady, who clocked 33.54 to break through at her seventh attempt, is owned by the Rising Above Syndicate and was the first leg of a winning double for trainer, Rodney Clark. Dashing Red Girl for the KSJC Syndicate completed the double for Rod by running the new PB of 27.38 to take out heat three of the GRV VBIS Restricted Win Stake over 480 metres.

The daughter of Bit Chili and Quite Dash-ing came from box five at $3.50 to score by half a length over Carlingford Finn ($4.00), with Bolder ($2.10 fav) the next to arrive, three and three quarter lengths in arrears. Madame Blue posted 27.66 to take out a 480 metres Grade 5.

Wearing the blue vest at $13.80, the daughter of Black Enforcer and Blue’s Loot scored by two lengths over Viterra ($11.40), with Walkaway Again ($9.20) a length and a quarter back in third spot.
