NFPA Cylinders
Hard (60 Rc) coated I.D. highstrength aluminum alloy tube.
Head and cap are machined fromsolid aluminum bar stock and blackanodized for corrosion resistance.
Oversized nonmetallic, compositerod bearing provides maximumload bearing support and superbwear resistance for high cycle life.
Ground and polished high strength steelpiston rod has hard chrome platedsurface to provide maximum cycle life forbushing and seals.
Floating cushion seal design allowsquick full flow to entire pistonsurface for instant stroke reversal.
Tie rods are 100,000 psi minimumyield steel for maximum holding power.Threads are rolled for durability.
Bearing retainer ring allows bearingcartridge to be removed withoutdisassembly of cylinder.
Solid aluminum alloy piston is strong, lightweight and carries a wide graphite filledPTFE wear band to support maximumload conditions.
Cushion has a flush, retainedadjustment needle.
Compression type tubeseals are reusable.
Port design allows full flowfor optimum cylinderoperation.
Cylinder Construction
Polyurethane rod wiper hasexcellent abrasion resistance.
Pressure rating: 250 psi max.Temperature limits: –10°F to +165°F.
The dimensional interchange to NFPA Standards
Lubrication is a high performance synthetic greasewith microscopic PTFE particles in suspension.

• 3-Position Cylinders3-Position cylinders are generally usedwhen three distinct rod positions arerequired from a single cylinder body. Twocylinders are assembled tip-to-tail with acommon center head. Using cylinders withtwo different strokes (the shorter located onthe rear cylinder), enables the front rod tobe extended from “home” to a positive mid-position or to full extension.
• Back-to-Back CylindersHere two cylinders are mounted back-to-back. They can have the same or differentstrokes and can be operated independently. This assembly enables you to have fourcombinations of rods extended or retracted.

• Multi-Power® Cylinders (150 psi max)
Fabco-Air attaches multiple pistons to acommon shaft and provides internal airpassages through the shaft to all pistons.Internal baffles divide the cylinder body intoseparate sections or stages. When airpressure is applied to port #2 of the cylinderillustrated at the right, all three pistons arepressurized simultaneously nearly tripling thethrust. Cylinders can be built with up to fourstages enabling thrusts of over 16,000pounds to be reached! 1 2

• Tandem CylindersTandem cylinders provide nearly twicethe force on an equivalent double actingcylinder. Two pistons are attached to acommon piston rod. Ports 2 and 4 arepressurized simultaneously to nearly doublethe extend force. Ports 1 and 3 arepressurized to double the retract force.

Options
• Option -E consists of a magnetbonded into the piston head. Whenthe piston magnet moves past anexternal sensor, the magnetic fieldactivates the sensor withoutphysical contact.
• Reliability – The annular pistonmagnet is permanently bonded intoa groove in the piston. It is apolarized permanent magnet ofrubber bonded barium ferrite that isvery stable and is not affected byshock. Under normal usage it willremain magnetized indefinitely.
• Warning – External magneticfields and/or ferrous objects may
Magnetic Piston: Option -E
Male Rod Thread Stud: Option -MR
affect the strength of the piston magnettherefore affecting sensor actuation andpiston position indication. Labels notingthis are affixed to the cylinder.
• Mounting – The sensor is attached toa 2-part clamp that attaches rigidly to atie rod and can be positioned anywherealong the length of the cylinder for veryprecise signaling.
• Two sensor styles are used – (a) the9-2A197 Series for 1-1/ 2" thru 4"bores requires a tie rod clamp, and (b)the 749 Series which accommodatesthe larger diameter tie rods of the 5" and6" bores with an integral clamp.
Order Sensors, Sensor Clamps and Cables Separately. See page 12 for details.
A high strength stud is threaded intothe standard female rod end andretained with thread locking adhesive. This method eliminates the smalldiameter thread relief normallyrequired when machining malethreads. It provides a much strongerrod end which can be repaired, ratherthan replacing the complete rod, should the stud become damaged.

Rubber Bumpers Options: Head -BF‡, Cap -BR, Head & Cap -BBA donut or pad of rubber is bonded inplace to act as the piston stop andabsorb the impact of the piston. Thisreduces noise and absorbs energy.Cylinder length will increase .062" per
bumper. Piston will travel a minimum ofspecified stroke.
• Operating Temperature: –20° to 220°F.‡ Note: –BF not available 1-1/2" bore.
Silent Seal Bumpers: Option -SBAttached to the piston, these bumpers reduce the noisecaused by the impact of the piston against the end cap.Standard pneumatic cushions may be used in conjunctionwith these cushions to further reduce end of stroke noiseand impact while giving deceleration benefits.
• Available 1-1/2" thru 5" bores only.• Operating Temperature: –20° to 200°F.• Operating Pressure to 150 psi.
