increased in Eastern Finland after the

economical regression.

In the EU project “Years for Empowerment –

Purpose and Relevance

In the EU project “Years for Empowerment –

Back to labour market” Mikkeli University of

Applied Sciences developed a model to promote

health and wellbeing of unemployed persons.

The project was supported by European Social

Fund and it lasted 04/2008 – 03/2011.

The aim of project

� was to prevent social exclusion, increase social

activities and promote health of unemployed

persons

� to facilitate professionals work with unemployed

persons by education

� the project focused on especially to unemployed

persons over 45 -years

Description of project activities

The model bases on Transtheoretical Stages of Change –

model including five interventions, which last 1-11/2 hours and

have special objectives and content:

1. General Health Assessment

2. Physical Condition and Living Habits

3. Supportive Social Relations and Social Network

4. Feedback and Further Plans for Self Care including

supervision to

use an electronic self care service (www.hyvis.fi)

5. Follow up and Evaluation after 6-12 months of the fourth

appointment.

Implementation

� The model was piloted with 122 unemployed

persons by nurse and social work students under

the supervision of the nurse teacher and the

occupational nurse

� 64% of unemployed persons had all five

appointments

� 13 % had 4 appointments

� 23% three or less appointments.

Clients ’ profile

� Mean age 45.5 years, female 40%, male 60%

� Most of the clients had long history of being unemployed,

time of unemployment mean 3,3 years

� They had poor physical condition and a lot of risk factors

related to health, like alcohol abuse, smoking and

depression

� The main problem related to health was loneliness and

feeling of outsider. Among the male perons this feeling

was strongly related to alcohol abuse.

Clients’ feedback

� The measurement and evaluation of health was important.

� The athmosphere in health interventions was positive and

respecting of the client.

� The health information was appropriate and easy to adapt

in everyday life.

� It was easier to talk with a student than a professional

� The feedback from the clients was positive (mean 8,3)

� They reported that the developed process model increased

their self-care skills and self-esteem

Evaluation

� Evaluator: The confident and unhurried discussions

encouraged the clients to self-care.

� The students reported that the project enabled them to

learn client-centered health and wellbeing assessment

and supportive interventions. The students also reported

that they had learned communication, supervising and

project management skills.

� ”The meetings with clients were proferssional,

appropriate and well-planned.”

� ”This project highlighted the co-operation and common

support between the multiprofessional group of students.

� The teacher’s role was very much the role of supervisior

of work. ”

Conclusions and Implications� The developed model is a process with five interventions to

assess and support health and wellbeing of unemployed

persons.

� The model supports the equality between employed and

unemployed persons to access preventive health services.

unemployed persons is possible to adapt to other clients

groups like senior citizens and caregivers.

� Beside this the model gives an excellent opportunity for

nurse and social work students to learn health promotion,

interaction and multi-professional team work.
