nSupply Corp. Supply Corporation and Empire
Pipeline, Inc. have constructed high pressure transmission lines to move Marcellus Shale gas to market. Supply’s Line N Expansion Project, which runs through Washington and Green Counties, Pa., went into service Oct. 26, 2011. The Empire Tioga County Extension Project, which runs from Tioga County, Pa., to Corning, N.Y., was operational on Nov. 22, 2011.
nSeneca Resources While Seneca’s acreage footprint is
among the largest of all Marcellus producers in Pennsylvania, recent developments and exploration efforts in two other emerging Appalachian shale plays , the Utica and the Geneseo, could create additional opportunities for future growth. Efforts are ongoing to determine Seneca’s Utica Shale footprint and results will be reported in the near future.
nDistribution Corp. Winter’s here and if you or anyone
you know needs assistance paying heating bills, LIHEAP and HEAP can help. Visit LIHEAP.com or HEAPhelps.com for income guidelines and household sizes. Subsidiary
News BriefsA message from Dave SmithEngaging you in our continued growth and successCommunication is a crucial element in establishing and strengthening long-standing bonds between an employer and its employees. Employees – both currently employed and retired – are one of our Company’s greatest assets. It has been proven time and time again that our investment in employee recruitment, development and retention provides exponential returns.
With that in mind, I am pleased to introduce National Fuel Source, an electronic publication for and about the employees and retirees of this Company – the National Fuel family. Rather than focus strictly on company news, it will highlight the people of our Company. In keeping with the times, as we seek to transition more of our customer base to paperless conversation, we are using the Internet and Intranet for distribution of the information.
The goal of this publication is two-way communication. We invite and encourage your feedback and want to know what you’d like to read or learn more about both within the Company and the industry as a whole. As well, we need your updates as the back pages of Source are about the National Fuel family. News updates or feedback can easily be delivered by completing the contact form within the employee/retiree portal or sending an email to Corporate Communications.
With all of the efficient operations and sophisticated equipment in business today, the success of a company depends, in the final analysis, on its people. By investing in our people, in part through enhanced communication, we are investing in our organization’s future.

NY Retiree ProfileLinda HughesFormer General Manager/CNSB-Main42 years
Linda Hughes started at National Fuel in 1968, one year after finishing high school, as a Junior Commercial Clerk in the Mail Department.
Q: What did you enjoy most about working at NFG, and what do you miss? A: Oh boy…the people. I don’t want to sound corny here! I enjoyed learning and being with people every day. National Fuel was always more like a family with a lot of caring people.
Q: Any big retirement plans?A: My big plan is to go out and visit my sister in Los Angeles and stay through the holidays – an extended vacation to the West Coast through Buffalo’s winter season. Now that I have more
time on my hands, I’m going to start taking keyboard lessons. I played piano a little bit as a young girl. I also finished my master’s degree in theological studies from Northeastern Seminar in Rochester. I started this while still working and was able to finish this past fall.
Q: How has the transition been to retirement? A: Because I was ready for it, it was easier. My real adjustment has been that my husband was already retired so I had to adjust to his routine and he had to adjust to mine! He was accustomed to doing whatever during the day and now he has me there!
Q: Any advice to new employees just starting out at the Company? A: Learn, and pay close attention, as much as you can about the Company. Think long term because National Fuel is one of the best places to work.
What I had been hearing from younger people is, “I have to be true to myself.” My advice – be true to the job and the responsibilities you have, and the truth for yourself will come. Too often, the focus is on ourselves – as opposed to thinking about the way you’re being instructed to do something. Discover how to adjust and
grow because you’re doing something outside of your normal comfort zone.

Jim RamsdellSenior Vice President/Chief Safety OfficerNational Fuel Gas Company
In 2011, National Fuel appointed Jim Ramsdell, Senior Vice President, as its first, enterprise-wide chief safety officer with responsibility for leading the Company’s initiatives for safety throughout its business operations. Jim brings more than 35 years of experience in constructing and operating gas delivery systems to the Company’s pipeline, gathering, storage, drilling and all related activities. He also maintains oversight for Labor Relations.
Jim recognizes the importance our employees (both past and present) play in ensuring safety for themselves and our customers as they are the eyes and ears in the field and in the communities as they enhance and improve day-to-day workplace safety.
The Utility, with crews on call 24 hours per day, seven days per week and 365 days per year, routinely responds to more than 99 percent of leak calls in 60 minutes or less – a record of performance that is recognized for excellence.
“Safety has always been of highest priority at National Fuel. However, recent incidents in our industry have raised the bar both in terms of performance and compliance. I am constantly impressed by the tireless efforts of our employees
in keeping safety as a focus. The well-being of our public and our customers is paramount, and we want all of our employees to return home safely each day without fail.”
Jim understands the Company will face challenges in coming years in terms of regulatory requirements and compliance, but believes we are fully prepared.
“Moving forward, we continue to invest significant capital – an average of $67 million annually - in our regulated businesses for infrastructure replacements and updates, and completing both initial integrity assessments and reassessments of our transmission pipelines. We are also progressing on the verification of the maximum allowable operating pressure of our entire transmission system, which requires extensive research of our pipeline records.”
Despite any looming challenges, Jim is confident that the talent, dedication and ingenuity of our employees will keep National Fuel in the forefront of safety.

Addressing water usage concerns in hydraulic fracturingA principle concern environmentalists and the public at large voice about producing natural gas from the Marcellus Shale is the significant volume of fresh water required in the hydraulic fracturing process to stimulate wells thus enhancing production. The horizontal drilling process can require 3 to 5 million gallons throughout all drilling phases.
However, in Tioga County, Pa., Seneca Resources is not using fresh water. Instead, the company is using contaminated water from an abandoned coal mine – water that has been flowing into Johnson Creek and the Tioga River. Seneca was the first in the industry to utilize this practice.
Aside from reducing the need to utilize other freshwater resources, Seneca’s use of mine water directly reduces the amount of contaminant loading that reaches Johnson Creek and the Tioga River, improving the quality of the region’s water resources.
The addition of a six-and-a-half mile pipeline system to transport this water
A conversation with Mike Roberts, Construction Foreman, MSW
Few can say they played collegiate athletics, and even fewer professionally. Mike Roberts has achieved bragging rights in both arenas. National Fuel’s construction foreman had an impressive career playing for both the farm and major league teams of the Atlanta Braves, Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals.
Raised in a small farming town in western Massachusetts, Mike grew up literally throwing things.
“I grew up on a pond…in the woods…where I would throw rocks into that pond,” he describes. “I swear, I just enjoyed throwing everything. I always threw the hardest.”
Mike’s talent was recognizable at an early age, and at 15 years old he played in a collegiate summer league. As a high school player, Mike was entertaining visits from scouts, but his dad refused to allow him to enter the draft. He was going to college first and getting an education.
Mike did just that, signing with Florida Southern College, a NCAA Division II member of the Sunshine State Conference where his team was runner-up in the national championship in 1994 and champs in 1995. Mike hoped to transfer to Vanderbilt University to further pursue baseball and, more importantly, his education. Unfortunately, he was not released from his scholarship in time and transferred to Siena College. The Atlanta Braves drafted him in 1997, though Mike returned to Siena during his off-season for two years to finish his sociology degree.
Throughout his five years playing professionally, Mike was plagued with shoulder, knee and back injuries.
Seneca Resources is dedicated to minimizing environmental impact.

PA Retiree ProfileKathie WhippleFormer Director of Quality AssuranceCNBS, 110028 years/8 months
Many busy National Fuel retirees involved in multiple activities often say, “I don’t know how I found the time to work.” That is true for Kathie Whipple, who retired from National Fuel’s Erie office three years ago. With six grandchildren, travel and community volunteer efforts, Kathie is every bit the spark she was in Quality Assurance, where she assisted payment-troubled customers.
“I loved every minute I worked for National Fuel,” said Kathie. “I loved the people.”
Her National Fuel career started in Erie in 1966. She later worked in Sharon, returning to Erie to work the phones and customer service walk-in. At one point she moved to Consumer Affairs and was promoted to supervisor.
These days Kathie has much to do, including spending time with her husband Norm. An avid traveler, she loves cruises, having just returned from the Caribbean, as well as previous trips to the Danube in Germany with time spent in Vienna, Austria. One notable getaway last April was traveling to London to witness the Royal Wedding.
A highlight of the trip was her family returning an Irish silver tea set that had been an heirloom for generations to a
historical society in the small town of Dunmanway, Ireland. She also took the under-channel train to Paris and says it was a “smooth ride.”
But retirement is not all play. Kathie serves on the Erie board of directors of SafeNet, a domestic abuse shelter; volunteers at the Kid’s Café/Inner-City Art House helping at-risk children engage in constructive after-school activities; participates in Zonta, a service club for professional women; assists housing clients for Habitat for Humanity; and is active in her church. To keep up the mental and physical energy required, she works out at a local health club, plays golf in a league and takes a painting class. And of course, she also helps care for her six out-of-town grandchildren – with another due in March.
“There is always time to babysit,” Kathie said.
Kathie stays in touch with her National Fuel friends, plans her future wisely, but subscribes to living life to the fullest every day. “My favorite advice…the last check you write should bounce.”KATHIE WHIPPLE

across Seneca’s Tioga County’s land holdings, eliminates the equivalent of 120 trucks per day, and reduces wear and tear on local roads and highways.
These and other creative solutions are helping Seneca Resources become the leader in water management and environmental stewardship. People Talk: A conversation with Mike Roberts, Construction Foreman, MSW continued from previous page
“I had funky mechanics. I did what you call throwing across your body…but I threw hard and unfortunately my body broke down eventually.”
After four surgeries, Mike retired from baseball in 2001 after major shoulder reconstruction and facing more surgeries on a back injury he could no longer hide.
“That’s what led me to retire. I was just at a point where I was totally burned out. I was sick of playing the deceptive game. It was a lot of emotion, and just hard.”
In 2000, as he was undergoing shoulder therapy and traveled home to visit family, he met his wife Karen who was in town visiting a friend. After retirement, Mike moved to Buffalo – Karen’s hometown. With slim job prospects for a sociology degree and a love for construction but unable to do it because of his injuries, Mike went back to school.
Within two and a half years, Mike received a bachelor’s degree in civil structural engineering and nearly completed a bachelor’s in mathematics (but was just one credit shy). His career took off and so did his family. Mike is the proud dad to Owen, 5, and Hannah, 3. Mike joined the National Fuel family in 2010.
Mike has found that National Fuel combines his love for construction as well as experience gained working at development firms within Western New York without the constant travel required in those positions. While life may have thrown him a curve ball with his baseball career, his professional career continues to flourish.
