Ah, a quiet moment to read Nexus, away from the constant barrage of political ads that dominate this time of the year. But wait…even here in the President’s Perspective you have to read about politics! Well, yes and no. I wanted to bring you up to date on two important developments in the world of politics from your Chamber.

First, our Political Action Committee, commonly called a PAC, endorsed two Ramsey County Commissioners this year. Our PAC made the decision to focus our attention (and our donations) on local races where our impact will make the most difference. We won’t hesitate to engage at the State level, and indeed routinely do, but our PAC can and will build our credibility by engaging at the local community level first and foremost.

Second, the PAC led our efforts to create a

comprehensive Civic Engagement Guide for all local candidates across the East Metro. I hope you’ve checked it out on our web site. We provide all the candidates with a questionnaire, focused on business issues, and then we post the candidates’ responses with no editing, whatsoever, of their remarks. You get to read exactly how a candidate responded to a question with no filter.

Please check out the Guide, and importantly, send the link to your colleagues, friends, and employees. We want this to be a public service for all interested voters. The better educated you are in making a decision, the stronger and more capable our elected officials become on the issues that matter to businesses.

Well, thanks for this political chat! In just a few short days we can all return to listening to updates on the weather, the Vikings, and all things not political!

Metro Meals on Wheels: More Than A Meal By Tara Kumar, Member Services Manager

In 2011, Meals on Wheels in the Twin Cities delivered over 1 million meals to more than 6,500 individuals in the metro area with the support of 8,000 dedicated volunteers. But, Meals on Wheels in the Twin Cities provides more than just a nutritious meal. Along with a fresh, healthy meal, Meals on Wheels delivers an important social connection to clients that help them remain living independently in their homes for as long as possible.

Delivering Nutrition Prior to receiving Meals on Wheels, Maurice’s diabetes was out of control. Maurice, in his early 60s and legally blind, lives alone in his home and was unable to prepare the meals that would help him manage his blood sugar levels. Now that he’s receiving controlled nutrition in the form of diabetic meals from Meals on Wheels, Maurice is able to manage his disease more effectively and maintain a healthier lifestyle.

Meals on Wheels is available to those who are

unable to prepare nutritious meals for themselves – this includes older adults and individuals with disabilities as well as people recovering from illness or surgery. Meals on Wheels is also available to those who just want the convenience of a healthy, ready-to-eat meal.

Providing fresh, high-quality nutrition, each Meals on Wheels delivery includes one entrée, 2 sides (vegetable & starch), fruit or dessert, and a beverage. Menus are reviewed by a dietician to ensure they are nutritionally balanced, and all meals are available with a low-salt or low-sugar option. Culturally specific meals (kosher, Asian and Somali/halal) are also available.

Thanks to diabetic meals from Meals on Wheels, Maurice is able to manage his disease.

Delivering Smiles In a survey of Meals on Wheels clients in South Minneapolis, 40% of respondents reported that the Meals on Wheels volunteer is the only person they see each day. Many times, the friendly greetings and daily check-in Meals on Wheels volunteers deliver are just as important as the meal itself. Meal delivery volunteers bring much needed peace of mind to both clients and caregivers who know that a caring individual is looking out for their health and well-being on a daily basis.

Meal deliveries are scheduled weekdays between 11am and 1pm, and extra meals can be delivered for those clients who need meals on weekends and holidays. Hot meals are delivered on a daily basis to those clients who benefit from the regular social connection and a ready to eat meal. For those who are more mobile and have more social contacts, a weekly delivery of frozen meals can be arranged for their convenience.

Delivering Independence By providing both good nutrition and a vital social connection, Meals on Wheels helps individuals live independently in their homes and communities. George, an 83 year old Meals on Wheels client, explains it best when describing the impact Meals on Wheels has had on him and his wife, Lois,

“She’s in the late stages of Alzheimer’s and, with the help of Meals on Wheels, our neighbors, and family, I can still provide her the 24 hour care she needs. I know we would be broke if she goes into a nursing home... I’m thankful for the physical and mental help I get from receiving Meals on Wheels."

When asked in a November 2010 AARP survey of home and community preferences, 73% of respondents agreed with the statement, “What I’d really like to do is stay in my current residence for as long as possible.” Meals on Wheels can help individuals realize this goal by providing a healthy meal and a daily check-in at a much more affordable cost than the alternatives, often institutional care/nursing home placement. The full cost of a home delivered meal ranges from $5-8 in the Twin Cities but a sliding scale fee can be arranged for those with limited incomes.

Choosing Meals on Wheels is an active step towards a healthy lifestyle and prolonged independence in an individual’s own home. To connect with Meals on Wheels, call us at 612-623-3363 or visit us online at www.meals-on-wheels.com.

In 2005, your Chamber created a tradition called Celebrate Business Success.

This award honors those who provide leading examples of how members of the business community contribute to a shared vision of economic success throughout the Saint Paul/East Metro area.

At the Chamber’s October Membership Meeting, Eric LaMott accepted a Celebrate Business Success award on behalf of Concordia University Saint Paul. Founded in Saint Paul in 1893, Concordia University is a comprehensive Christian liberal arts university and one of the least expensive private colleges in Minnesota. Students are part of a close-knit, caring community, providing an educational experience that is responsive, relevant and real. Concordia also announced last month it was decreasing its tuition price for the traditional undergraduate program by $10,000 for the 2013-2014 school year.
