1. What is a Homestay? （ホームステイってなぁに？）

Unlike a hotel or a guesthouse where you pay and enjoy the service, a homestay allows you to

experience living and in Japan as a member of a Japanese host family.

ホームステイは、お金を支払って、サービスを受けるホテルや日本の民宿とは違い、

家族の一員として生活することです

Our host families are very kind and will welcome you to live with them. In

return, you should make an effort to adjust and respect their lifestyle. Try to fit into the household

routine as naturally as possible and as part of the family.

ホストファミリーは、基本的には善意でゲストを迎え入れているため、ゲストであるあなたはその家族の生

活様式を理解し、尊重することが大切です。自分自身の家庭に海外のゲストを迎え入れるときのことを想

像して行動しましょう。

A homestay is the best way to learn and understand about a foreign country’s everyday customs

and culture. In addition, a homestay environment provides a valuable opportunity to actually use

the Japanese you learn at language school. Please try not to shut yourself up in your room; try

to interact with your host family as much as possible.

ホームステイは、その国の習慣や文化、考え方などを学ぶための最もよい方法のひとつと言えます。学

校で習う日本語だけでなく、実際の生きた日本語を学ぶことができる貴重な機会となります。

できるだけ部屋にこもらないようにし、積極的にホストファミリーと交流しましょう。

If you have difficulty in communicating, you should try to talk to your host family and show an

interest in spending time getting to know them. Sometimes, the bond between the student and host

family can become as close as a real family. Many people still keep in touch

with each other even after returning home to their country.

家庭内では、言葉が少々わからなくても、自分の部屋に閉じこもらずに積極的

に自分から話しかけるようにしましょう。帰国する頃には、本当の家族のように

感じ、帰国後も長く連絡を取り続けるようになるゲストがたくさんいらっしゃいま

す。

Occasionally, there may be misunderstandings or troubles because of culture differences in Japan.

The notion of “common sense” is not always the same among different cultures, and sometimes

even different people or families. Also, remember that comparing homestays among

friends at school should be avoided out of respect to your host family.

ゲストであるあなたの常識（母国での常識）は必ず日本の常識であるとは限りません。言

葉の行き違いや文化の違いのために、誤解やトラブルが起こる可能性は十分にあります。

ホストファミリーに敬意を払い、お友だちとお互いのホストファミリーを比較するような会話

は避けましょう。

Allow your expectations to be flexible and try to understand the culture from a Japanese point of

view. If you face any difficulties while living aboard, you should always be positive and try to come

to a solution with discretion. It will help to enhance your sense of respect for cultural diversity.

困難な状況に向き合い、解決する事は、異国での貴重な学びとなり、人生の大きな自信となります。問題

が起こったときには、自分の主張を伝えるだけでなく、相手の気持ちと日本の習慣・文化を理解するように

しましょう。

Remember, to your host family you are a representative of your home country. Your behavior and/or

how you interact with your hosts may be cause for them to reconsider hosting someone from your

country again. Try to think of yourself as a kind of ambassador, and act accordingly.

2. Homestay program （ホームステイプログラム）

① Location ロケーション

Because of the housing situation in Japan, many families live in the suburbs, and in some cases

you may have to commute to your school for about one hour by public transportation.

Please be prepared for commuting costs and rush hour congestion.

日本の住宅事情によりホストファミリーの多くは郊外に住んでいます。そのため学校や会社まで公共の交

通機関を使って 1 時間ほどかかる場合もあります。交通費や通学／通勤時間の混雑については予めご

了承ください。

③ Application Process 申込手続きの流れ

(1) Please sign in the column of Declaration in the application form after you carefully read

“The Essential Guide for Homestay” and “Homestay agreement form”

(2) You fill out the application and related forms.

(3) We send an invoice by the e-mail.(about two months before the check in date). *Please transfer

the homestay program fees to us by the deposit due date.

(4) We send a host family details by the e-mail.(about a month before the check in date).

（１）「ホームステイの心得」「ホームステイ同意書」をよく読み、申込書に署名。

（２）申込書の記入、送付。

（３）弊社から E メールにて請求書を送付（入居日 2 か月前くらい）。*期日までに代金をお支払い下さい。

※ Make sure to have your currency exchanged at the airport upon arrival if you are holding your

country’s currency. You should bring more cash with you because there are few places for currency

exchange on the streets, and there are many cases where you are not able to use international

credit cards or cash cards. Please purchase traveler’s checks (yen-currency or dollar-currency) at

the bank in your country before leaving your country. It is more secure than having cash because

you can get a re-issue at the time of loss. Most stores don't accept them so you should exchange it

to cash at banks or exchange stores. (There might be a transaction fee).

※ 自国の通貨を持参される場合には必ず到着時に空港で両替をしましょう。

街中の両替所は非常に少ないです。海外のクレジットカードや国際キャッシュカードが使えないトラブルも

多々発生していますので、現金は多めに持参されることをお勧め致します。

トラベラーズチェック（円建てまたは US ドル建て）は渡航前に自国の銀行にてご購入下さい。

紛失時に再発行が可能なので、現金よりも安全です。お店ではほとんど使えませんので

銀行や両替所で換金して使うことになります。（手数料が多少かかる場合があります。）

4. Airport Arrival （空港到着）

Meeting arrangement with your host family on the first day

初日のホストファミリーとの対面について

1. We do not offer pick-up services. You are required to go to the place where you will meet your

host family by yourself.

2. Please contact us in advance to arrange at where and what time you will meet with your host

family on your homestay start date. Please make sure how you can get to the meeting place.

3. Please check the following websites for the transportation from Narita or Haneda airports.

4. Please give us your flight details at least 3weeks before your arrival in Japan.

We require you to have your flight arrive in Japan as below.

Narita International airport: Arrive in Japan no later than 17:00

Haneda airport: Arrive in Japan no later than 19:00

If you arrive in Japan later than the time mentioned above, you might be asked to move into your

host family’s house the next day. In this case, you need to be responsible for your accommodation

on your arrival day in Japan.

In case your flight is changed, please let us know immediately.

1． 私たちでは出迎え・同行サービスを提供していません。申込者は、ホストファミリーと会う場所まで一

人で行きます。

2． 事前に私たちに連絡をして、待ち合わせの場所や時間を決めてください。またその場所への生き方も

確認してください。

3． 成田空港または羽田空港からの交通手段に関しては、以下のサイトで確認してください。

4. 到着便の情報を来日の 3 週間前までには、私たちにお知らせください。尚、到着便は、以下の時間ま

でに日本に着くように手配してください。

日本到着日：

成田国際空港： 17 時までに日本到着

羽田空港： 19 時までに日本到着

上記時刻より遅く到着する場合は、到着翌日にホストファミリー宅に移動して頂く可能性が

あります。その場合、到着日の滞在先は申込者がご自身で手配頂くことになります。到着

便が変更になった場合は、すぐに私たちにお知らせください。

Arrival date 到着日

1. Please remember to exchange money in advance if needed.

2. Please contact your host family when you leave the airport so they will know where you are. You

can say “Imakara kuukou wo demasu” → “I’m leaving the airport now.”

3. Please call your host family when you arrive at the station and say “Ima eki ni tsukimashita.” →

“I’ve just arrived at the station now.”

※Even if you do not intend to go directly to the host family’s house, don't forget to call them and

inform them the time you will arrive at their station.（The host family will be waiting for your arrival

according to your flight time. ）

Your host family will be informed of your estimated arrival time and will be ready and waiting meet

you at the nearest station. They will be expecting your call, do not forget to call your family from the

airport. If you forget to call them for some reason, be sure to call them from somewhere, such as

when you change trains.

1)日本円の両替など必要があれば自分でする。

2)空港を出るときにホストファミリーに「今から空港を出ます。」（Imakara kuko wo demasu）と連絡を入

れる。

3)ホストファミリーの最寄駅に到着したときに、「今駅に着きました。」（Ima eki ni tsukimashita）とホストフ

ァミリーに電話を掛ける。

※もし空港から直接ホストファミリーの家に向かわない場合は、事前にホストファミリーに電話を掛ける、

何時くらいにホストファミリーの最寄駅に到着をするか伝えること。

（ホストファミリーは飛行機の時間に合わせて来るのを待っています）

ホストファミリーはあなたのおおよその到着時刻を予め知り、あなたが最寄駅に到着した直後に迎え

にいけるように準備していてくれています。ですので、必ず空港から電話を掛けて下さい。万が一電

話し忘れた場合、必ず乗換ポイントから電話を掛けて下さい。

～ Public Phone 公衆電話のかけ方～

You can buy a telephone card from convenience store. Or using 10 yen, 100 yen coins.

1. Pick up the phone，insert telephone card of coins

2. Dial the number

3. The remaining amount will be displayed on the LCD screen

4. Insert more coins or another phone card if you hear a buzzer.

This is when the remaining amount is insufficient.

5. Hang up the phone.

The remaining amount or phone card will be rejected out.

テレホンカード（コンビニエンスストア等で購入できます。）もしくは10円玉か100円玉を用意してください。

1. 受話器を持ち上げ、テレホンカード、もしくは硬貨を入れます。

2. 電話番号を押します。

3. テレホンカードを使用した場合、残りの度数が電話機に表示されます。

4. 通話制限時間が来ると、ブザーが鳴りますので、追加のテレホンカードか硬貨を入れてください。

5. 受話器を置くとテレホンカードまたは硬貨の未使用分が戻ってきます。

5. Home Life （日常生活について）

① Using Your Greetings あいさつ

Greetings are universal etiquette! Always remember to use

the greetings you have learned.

Morning (before 11 am): 「おはようございます」(Good morning / Hello). Depending on the company,

you can use it even after noon. (Asking why can make a good topic of conversation.)

Noon to evening: 「こんにちは」(Good afternoon)

Evening to late night: 「こんばんは」(Good evening)

※「こんにちは」&「こんばんは」are a little formal and usually aren’t used with family.

あいさつは世界共通のコミュニケーションです。

挨拶を忘れないようにしましょう。

朝：「おはようございます」…朝から昼前（11 時頃）までに使います。会社によっては、お昼を過ぎていても、

その日初めて会った人に使うこともあります。

昼：「こんにちは」…昼ごろから日没までのあいさつ言葉です。

夕方～夜：「こんばんは」…夕方、暗くなってからのあいさつ言葉です。

※「こんにちは」と「こんばんは」は家族間では使いません。

There are many first time experiences in Japan, so just ask your host family about what to say!

日常生活でいろいろなことを体験して初めて気がつくことも数多くあります。日常生活を通して分からない

事があれば、その都度、ホストファミリーに聞きましょう。

② Meal Time 食事/手伝い

Pick up the rice bowl with one hand when eating. Ask for a fork or spoon politely if you are not good

at using chopsticks. Ask politely when you would like more, and use both hands to hand over or

receive the dishes. Clean up the table after the meal and bring your dishes to the kitchen.

Children are taught from a young age to finish everything on their plate, so throwing away food you

have not eaten without thinking will generally hurt your host’s feelings. If you cannot finish your food,

please be sure to first tell them you are full and cannot finish – this will make a big difference!

Remember to help out in the house as part of the family!

自分の食べた食器などは台所まで運び、後片付けのお手伝いを積極的にしましょう。おかわりを希望す

るときは、遠慮なくファミリーに伝えましょう。 茶碗などを受け取るときは、片手で受け

取らず両手で受けとるのが作法です。

ご飯を食べるときは、ご飯茶碗を持って食べます。おはしを使うのが難しいようであれ

ば、遠慮しないでファミリーに伝えて、スプーンやフォークをもらいましょう。

家族の一員としてお手伝いを積極的に行いましょう。

③ Family Life & Household Rules （家庭内のルール）

≪Japanese-style bedding (“o-futon”) ふとん≫

Ask for instructions on how to fold your ofuton.

Fold it after you wake up every morning.

・ベッドではなく布団（ふとん）で寝る場合は、布団のひきかたを家族に教えてもらい

ましょう。

・布団は毎朝たたんで片付けるようにしましょう。

*If you don’t fold it for 1 week, the tatami mat will get moldy like in the picture. You will have to pay

for the damage.

※布団を 1 週間たたまないだけで下記の写真のようにカビが生えてしまいます。修復にかかる費用はゲ

ストの負担となります。

≪Entrance 玄関≫

・Take off your shoes at the entrance and arrange them neatly.

・玄関で靴を脱ぎましょう。

・靴はきれいに並べましょう。

≪畳（たたみ） (Tatami / Straw mat) ≫

・Do not wear your slippers in the tatami room.

・Be careful when placing your luggage on the tatami because it can be damaged easily.

・Do not put any wet towels or clothes on the tatami.

・Be careful when using matches, lighters, cigarettes, etc.

・畳の部屋ではスリッパを脱ぎましょう。

・畳はとても傷がつきやすいので、スーツケースなどの荷物の取り扱いには注意しましょう。

・濡れたタオルや洋服等をそのまま置かないようにしましょう。

・マッチやライター、タバコの火に注意しましょう。

≪Garbage Disposal ゴミの分別≫

Each city has its own rules for garbage disposal. Ask your host family how to sort the trash and

where to take it when you take it out.

・ホストファミリーが住んでいる地域によって、ゴミの捨て方が異なります。

・ゴミを捨てる前に、分け方や捨てる場所などについて、必ずホストファミリーの方

に確認をしましょう。

≪Curfews 門限≫

Be sure to tell your host family if you will not be having dinner at home, or spending night out of the

house. Confirm the time for dinner, if there is a curfew, etc.

≪Smoking, Drinking 喫煙・飲酒≫

In Japan, anyone under 20 years cannot smoke or drink. Laws are strict, so please obey them.

・日本では満 20 歳未満は未成年となり、日本の法律で喫煙・飲酒を禁止されています。

≪Hair dyeing 髪染め≫

You have to get the permission from your host, and be careful not to dirty the sink or the floor.You

will have to pay for any cleaning.

・必ずホストファミリーの許可を得てから行い、流しや床を汚さないように注意してください。汚れを取り除く

ためにかかる費用はゲストの負担となります。

④ Chores & Laundry 掃除、洗濯

You are responsible to keep your room neat and tidy at all times.

≪Doing Laundry in the House, Washing Machine Usage≫

Ask your host family how to do the laundry. Make sure you understand how to use

the laundry machine and where to hang it to dry. Remember to help out if your host

washes the laundry for you.

自分の部屋は自分で掃除をしてください。きれいに使うように心がけましょう。

≪洗濯の仕方・洗濯機の使い方≫

ホストファミリーと相談して決めましょう。自分で洗う場合は、洗濯機の使用方法を教えてもらい、きちんと

決められた場所に干してください。ホストファミリーが洗濯してくれる場合は、積極的に「手伝います。」と声

をかけましょう。

➄ Electricity, Water, and Gas 電気・ガス・水道

The cost of utility bills is high in Japan. You should try not to be excessive in your use of electricity,

water, and gas. Families in Japan are generally aware of conservation issues--not only for saving

on utility bills, but also for protecting the environment. Please take care to turn off lights when not

needed and turn off the faucet.

海外と日本では電力、ガス、水道などエネルギーに関する感覚が違います。日本では光熱費が高いので

使い方を注意するようにしてください。国によっては、格段に光熱費が安いため、身についた習慣からホ

ームステイ先でも使いっぱなし、流しっぱなし、つけっぱなしにする傾向があります。日本では家族全員が

光熱費のみならず、エコのためにも節電・節水に気をつけています。

省エネの為には…夏は 26 度～28 度、冬は 20 度～25 度に設定しましょう！

Note: Houses in Japan usually have a good air circulation and do not tend to have thermostats in

the rooms. Especially in the recent few years, families in Japan are very eco-concerned.

Experience an eco-conscious life style with your host family: Wear more clothes when it is cold and

use your fans when it is hot!

豆知識：

日本の住宅は古来より通気性に優れているため、部屋の温度を調整することには向いていませんでした。

そのため、エアコンを多用するよりも、まずは扇風機や洋服などで暑さ寒さの調整をします。その生活スタ

イルが近年のエコロジーを意識した生活習慣に繋がっています。ホームステイを通して、日本式のエコロ

ジー生活も体験しましょう！

Houses in Japan, especially ones built in the past, are built of wood. Always pay extra attention

when handling fire. Fire is especially dangerous because if one house catches fire it can burn down

the entire community.

日本では、近代以前は木造の家が主で、火事は最も恐ろしい事故のひとつとして考えられていました。木

造の家は、１軒が火事になると、町中に広がってしまうからです。火の取り扱いに関しては決して慣れるこ

となく、注意をするようにしてください。

You have to get permission from your host and follow the rules before

cooking. Be careful not to cause a gas leakage. You are not allowed to

smoke in your room or use any incense or candles.

火を使って料理をする場合は、必ずファミリーの許可を得て、ルール通りに行って

ください。ガスの消し忘れにも注意しましょう。お香やキャンドルなどの火をつけるものは全て、自分の部

屋での使用は喫煙と同様に禁止です。

The number of people who have quit smoking has been increasing globally. In Japan,

non-smoking areas are also becoming very common. Please do not smoke under any

circumstances if you have declared yourself as a “non-smoker” on your application.

However, you must remember NOT to smoke in your room even if you marked

“smoker” on your application. Most host families forbid smoking in the house.

Always remember to obey the rules!

世界中で煙草を吸わない人が増え、日本でも喫煙場所は少なくなっています。申込書に煙草を吸わない

と記入した人は、どんな理由があっても吸わないようにしてください。喫煙することがあると記入した人は、

ファミリーに喫煙方法についてよく相談するようにしてください。自分の部屋での喫煙は禁止です。禁煙の

ファミリーが多いので、ルールは必ず守るようにしましょう。

⑦ Using the Bath and Toilet お風呂とトイレ

Use common sense and don’t use the bath for too long or inconvenience other family

members. Follow the proper etiquette in Japan for taking a shower or bath.

* Japanese people have the habit of taking a bath every day. Please try to take a shower

once a day.

長時間の使用はファミリーの迷惑になりますから気をつけてください。

シャワーだけでなく、バスタブで入浴をする場合は、日本でのルールを覚えましょう。

*日本人は毎日入浴する習慣があります。 1 日に 1 回シャワーを浴びてください。

Wash and rinse your body first before entering the bath. You can get into the bath after rinsing. It’s

up to you if you want to wash your body again. But never drain out the bath water unless you have

asked your host. Don't wash yourself in the bathtub because everyone in the family will be using

the same bath water.

まず、お湯に入る前に体を洗います。お湯は皆で使うので、お湯の中で体を洗ってはいけません。体を軽

く流し、お湯に入って体を温めてから、もう一度体を洗っても良いです。最後に、お風呂から出るときは、

バスタブのお湯を捨ててはいけません。お湯を捨てる場合は、ファミリーに確認をしましょう。

In the Bath《ofuro》

Be careful of the water temperature and not to burn yourself.

バスタブに入る前に体を流します。 お湯は熱いかもしれないので十分気をつけてください。

Wash your body BEFORE entering the bathtub. Never wash your body in the tub. In Japan,

everyone in the family uses the same hot water in the tub. So, never drain the water without

checking with your host family first.

× 体を洗うのは、バスタブの外です。 × 石鹸の泡は十分に洗い流してください。

× バスタブの中で体を洗うのは、やめましょう。

× 日本では、バスタブのお湯は交換しないで家族全員が使います。お風呂を出

Using the toilet

Please dispose only toilet paper. Do not dispose sanitary goods, chewing gum, or cigarettes into

the toilet—you will clog the toilet and/or plumbing system. The majority of toilet paper in Japan is

water soluble and can be flushed down the toilet. However, don't flush any other paper such as

tissue, paper towels, or others because they are not soluble in water.

トイレにはトイレットペーパー以外流さないようにしてください。サニタリーグッズ、チューインガム、煙草は

トイレに流さないでください。日本のトイレットペーパーは、水溶性で、トイレに流すことができますが、他の

ものは水に溶けないので、トイレの配管が詰まってしまいます。他の紙やティッシュペーパー、ペーパータ

オルは組織、紙タオルは水に溶けません。

⑧ Wi-Fi Internet, landline phones and cell phones WI-FI、電話と携帯電話について

Many host families have Internet access with limited data plans, so you must get permission before

using your family’s Internet and/or Wi-Fi. Also, please be aware you are not allowed to use the

household phone unless necessary.

Please follow the list below when you need to use the phone:

1) Get prior permission from the host family.

※ This applies egardless if you are making local or long-distance calls.

2) Pay the amount for the minutes you used.

3) Try using collect calls for long-distance.

4) Try using collect calls for international calls. It is also easy to use “international prepaid cards.”

However, you need to confirm if there is an additional local phone charge when using the cards.

In many cases, Japanese ATMs will not accept certain cards, or will have a withdrawal limit.

Be sure to check that your card can be used internationally, and if there is a limit. More than

a few people have been with no money and not able to use the ATM, waiting for a wire

transfer from their parents. This is especially important considering the next rule below.

日本の ATM から引き出せないケースや限度額がある場合も多々ありますので、まずは自分のカードが

使用できる場所や限度額を確認しておきましょう。お金がなくなるギリギリに ATM に行ったが引き出せず、

You are not allowed to borrow or lend money to the host family. Please consult to the school or our

company regarding any money issues. In case of an emergency treatment at the hospital and your

host family paid for you in advance, please return the money to them as soon as possible.

ご自身のエージェント、通学先の学校、またはホームステイインジャパンに相談して下さい。なお、緊急に

You are responsible for your own money and valuables.

⑪ Trains and Transportation 交通

The average commuting time for one way is about 40 to 90 minutes in Tokyo.

Check with your host family for the best route and method to get to your school. Whether it is by

train or bus, make sure you know how to ride them, the location of the stops, and how to transfer

from the train or bus if necessary.

ホームステイ先から学校までの通学は通常 40 分～90 分かかります。東京では一般的な通学の時間とな

ります。一つの文化体験としてホストファミリーと同じ経験をしてみましょう。

You might be qualified to purchase a commuter pass or discount tickets depending on the type of

visa or the school you go to. Remember to check with your school or the train company.

最寄りの駅までの道順、学校までの電車の乗り換え方など、ホストファミリーに相談しながら事前にしっか

りと確認しておきましょう。 ビザの種類や通っている学校、滞在期間などによって、各種定期券や割引券

IC Cards for Transportation (Kanto: SUICA and PASMO; Kansai: ICOCA)

交通系 IC カード（関東では SUICA と PASMO、関西では ICOCA）について

SUICA, PASMO, ICOCA and other cards are pre-paid cards with NFC technology. They are useful

for riding the train, bus, or even shopping. After first charging them with money, simply touch the

card to the readers at the gates or on busses to pay your fare. If you buy a SUICA commuter pass

and charge the card with some extra money, it will even automatically calculate how much you owe

if you get off at a station outside your commuter pass’s range and deduct the amount; no need to

visit the Ticket Office.

⑫ Going Out with your Host Family (admission fees, eating out)

ホストファミリーとのお出かけ（入場料金や外食）

You should make your own plans on the weekend because the host family will not take you out

every weekend.

ホストファミリーと一緒に出かける場合、自分の交通費や入場料は自分で支払ってください。

Also, please remember that when going out somewhere together, you are responsible for paying

for your own transportation and any admission fees. If you are going by car, remember to offer to

share the cost of gas, parking, and any highway fees. Express your gratitude whenever they pay for

something for you. Appreciation and humbleness is very vital in Japan’s society and to maintain a

good relationship with others. Be careful not to take things for granted.

車のガソリン代やさまざまな費用をホストファミリーが支払ってくれた場合は、自分はいくら支払えばよい

か質問するようにしましょう。ホストファミリーが支払ってくれると言われたときは、感謝の気持ちを伝えま

しょう。謙虚な振る舞いと感謝の言葉は、日本で人間関係を深める時に、とてもよい影響を与えます。

Your host family is only responsible for the meals that are in your homestay contract. Please pay for

any meals that are not included in your contract. For example, if you are contracted for two meals a

day (breakfast & dinner) you should only pay for your own lunch, even if you ate out with your family

for breakfast and dinner.

外食をする場合、契約上の食事はホストファミリーが負担します。契約以外の食事は自分で支払ってくだ

さい。

（例）朝・夕２食プランのホームステイを申し込んだ場合・・・

朝・夕食をホストファミリーと一緒に外食した場合はホストファミリーが支払います。

昼食はホストファミリーと一緒に食べても自分で支払ってください。ホストファミリー以

外のお友達と出かけ、朝、夕食を外食にした場合は自分で支払う事になります。

⑬ Driving & Motorcycling 自動車・オートバイの運転

You are not allowed to drive your host family’s car or ride on their motorcycle in any situation, and

you must refuse to do so even if you are offered the chance. Any accidents can cause a very

serious situation and unbearable responsibility.

自家用車、二輪車を問わず、ホストファミリーの車の運転は禁止です。運転に慣れていても、万が一事故

を起こした場合、あなたが負う責任は想像できないほど重いものです。ホームステイ期間中に、これほど

のリスクを背負って車を運転する必要はないので、運転を頼まれても断るようにしましょう。

⑭ Dealing with Curfews, Overnight Absence, Skipping Meals, Inviting Friends

門限、外泊、食事がいらないとき、友達を家に招きたいとき

If you want to invite any friends to the house, you must get permission for your host first.

Please notify your host when you will return home late, will not have dinner at home, or will stay

overnight somewhere else. If you will be spending the night somewhere, let your host family know

when you will be back home and where you are staying at. *The police may be contacted if you

don’t get home until late night without contacting your host family first.

お友達をホームステイ先に呼ぶときは、必ずホストファミリーの許可をもらいましょう。一度来たことがある

友達でも、毎回ホストファミリーに聞くようにしましょう。帰りが遅くなるときや、食事がいらないときなど、ホ

ストファミリーと決めた適度な時間までにホストファミリーへ連絡するようにしましょう。自分の都合でプラン

に含まれている食事をホストファミリーと食べず、外食をする場合の食事は自己負担となります。外泊す

る場合は、少なくとも前日までに行き先、帰宅日、帰宅時間をホストファミリーに連絡するようにしましょう。

※何も連絡がなく帰りが遅い場合には警察に連絡する場合があります。

⑮ Staying Out Late as a Minor 未成年者の深夜外出

In Japan, anyone younger than 20 is considered a minor. Minors seen out late from the hours of

10:00 pm to 4:00 am are sometimes reported to the police. If you are a minor, please be aware of

the time and don’t stay out too late.

日本では 20 歳未満を未成年と規定しています。未成年の方が午後 10 時～午前 4 時の間に外出してい

た場合、警察に補導される可能性がありますので外出は控えましょう。

⑯ Causing Damages or Losing Keys 物を壊したとき、鍵をなくしたとき

Make sure you know how to lock and unlock the door of your house. You will have to pay for any

lost keys or damage to keys, or anything else in the house. If you do accidentally damage

something or lose a key, tell your host family immediately. Also, remember to return the keys to

your host family upon leaving your homestay.

ドアのロックの仕方やカギの使い方について、必ずホストファミリーに確認をしてください。万が一、カギを

紛失したり盗難にあったりした場合、弁償をすることになります。また、退去する際には忘れずにカギをホ

ストファミリーに返却してください。ホストファミリーの物を万が一壊したりした場合も自分で弁償をすること

になります。すぐにホストファミリーに相談をしてください。

⑰ Accidents & Illness 病気やケガ

You are required to enroll in medical or travel insurance to reduce the risk of having to pay high

medical expenses in case of sickness, emergencies or accidents. (One example: Medical

expenses for appendicitis are 2 million yen. Treatment for a gastric ulcer is 600,000 yen.) When

adjusting to a new environment, the body can get weak and get sick easily. Don’t make your host

family or family back home worry; eat a balanced diet, get moderate exercise, and

don’t go to extremes. Remember to visit the doctor if you start feeling sick.

日本滞在中にどんなことが起こるかわかりません。事故・病気・怪我など…。万が一に備え

て、必ず医療保険に加入して下さい。保険に加入していない場合は高額を自分で負担する

ことになります。盲腸の治療費と入院費で 200 万円、胃潰瘍で 60 万円を支払ったという事例も実際に発

生しました。

また日本滞在中は生活環境が劇的に変わるため、普段は風邪を引かない方でも体調をくずしてしまうこ

とがあります。新しい環境に慣れてきたころに気が緩んで体調をくずしてしまう場合もあります。いずれに

せよ体調が悪いときにはよく休み、水分、ビタミンを多く取るように心がけてください。

ホストファミリーに心配や負担をかけることのないようにしましょう。風邪など、他の人にうつる可能性があ

るときには、早めに病院に行って治すようにしてください。

【Application Process for Health Insurance 医療障害保険申請の流れ（例） 】

① Visit your nearest doctor.

② Get a copy of your diagnosis (confirm if the insurance company accepts a diagnosis in

Japanese)

③ Pay your doctor visit fee in full and keep the receipt.

④ Fill out the application form and apply with the insurance company along with receipt, diagnosis

and any necessary documents.

⑤ The reimburse payment will be transferred to your bank account in about two months.

・自分の身の安全が確保できたらホストファミリーに連絡を入れる。

⑲ Carrying Your Identification 身分証明書の携帯について

Carry ID such as your passport, resident card, etc. at all times whenever you go out. The police

often do stop-and-searches and you will be required to present your ID.

外出時は必ず、パスポート、在留カード等の身分証明書を必ず携帯して下さい。

日本では警察に職務質問をされることがよくあります。その際に身分の証明をする必要があります。

⑳ Borrowing Your Host Family’s Bicycle ホストファミリーの自転車を借りる場合

If you park it on the street, it could be removed by the city or stolen (quite common). Please park it

in the designated parking areas. You will have to pay a fine if it is impounded. If it is stolen, you

have to reimburse your host family.

路上に駐輪した場合、撤去や盗難される場合がありますので必ず駐輪場に停めるようにしてください。撤

去された場合は引き取り料をお支払頂くことになります。また、盗難された場合はご自身でホストファミリ

ーに弁償しなければなりません。

6 Moving Out（退去について）

① Homestay Extensions ホームステイの延長

Please contact our office in the case you would like to extend the number of days of your stay.

Regardless of how short the number of days, you still need to notify us because we need to confirm

② Packing for the Trip Home 帰国時の荷物

Undoutably, you will have more luggage to take home with you when returning

home. Therefore, you need to confirm with your airline company about the

baggage allowance and be prepared need to pay for an excess baggage charge.

(Borrow a scale from the host family and weigh your luggage prior to going to the

airport).

帰国時は荷物が増えています。超過料金を支払う可能性があるので、事前に帰国便の航空会社の情報

を確認し、自分の荷物が重量内かチェックをして下さい。（ホストファミリーに体重計を借りましょう。）

③ Your Last Day 最終日

Check with your host family to see if you left anything behind or forgot to return anything to them.

Please remember to reimburse them for any damages that you’ve caused.

* Do NOT leave your homestay while your host family is out. In the past, there have been cases

where guests have left the house unlocked and the family returned to find their house almost

burglarized while they were out.

退去時には忘れ物やホストファミリーに返し忘れているものがないか、必ずホストファミリーと一緒に確認

してください。損傷などがあった場合はみ皆さん自身がホストファミリーに弁償します。

必ずホストファミリーがいる時に退去して下さい。ホストファミリーがいないときに、家の鍵を開けっ放しで

退去してあやうく泥棒に入られるところだったというケースが発生したことがあります。

Remember to contact your host family by email or telephone to let them

know that you’ve arrived home safely as they could be worrying about your

journey back home, just like your own family.

ホストファミリーに電話やメールで無事に家に帰った事を連絡しましょう。皆さん

が無事に家にたどり着いたか、ホストファミリーは皆さんが飛行機に乗って帰っ

た後も心配しています。

7 About the Japanese People（日本人とは？？？）

One of the biggest keys to enjoying your stay in Japan and making friends are understanding the

culture and thinking in Japan. Just keep in mind: as with any country, the following descriptions

won’t match everyone you meet.

～日本人の気質を知ってうまく付き合っていきましょう。～

① “Apologize first, apologize later” 謝罪

You will probably hear the word “sumimasen” more than you ever thought

you would. Although it translates to “I’m sorry” or “Excuse me”, it has

multiple uses; for example, to thank someone for something. “Sumimasen” is an oil that keeps

relationships smooth and is applied to many situations.

日本にいるとよく「すみません」という言葉を耳にすることでしょう。「すみません」は本当に謝罪して言う場

合と、そうではなく相手を立てるために自分をへりくだっていう場合があります。すみませんと言われたら

この２つの意味をしっかりと理解しておきましょう。

② Sensing others’ feelings, and hospitality 気配り おもてなし精神

One of the reasons people who visit Japan come away saying “The people are so nice!” comes

from a part of the culture called “omotenashi,” or the famed “Japanese hospitality.” It may seem

like your hosts are going out of their way to do things for you, suggest ideas for things to do,

give you different things, and so forth. Don’t worry, it’s nothing strange or unusual. All you have

to do is say “Thank you!” and mean it.

日本人は周りの人に気を配り、誰かが来るとおもてなしの心で接します。ステイ中も気を使ってみなさん

にいろいろと提案してきたりやってくれたりするかと思います。ただそれは無理にしているのではなく、彼ら

はそれを心からしてあげたいと思っていることが多いので、そのときは「ありがとう」といって好意を笑顔で

受けましょう。

③ What is said versus what is meant: Understanding “honne” and “tatemae” 本音と建前

Often, what Japanese people say isn’t what they actually mean, or want to say. Often, people

will place the feelings of others ahead of their own and plan what they say accordingly in order

keep things happy or going smoothly. “Tatemae” is what is said; “honne” is what is meant.

Knowing which is which is a skill that can take time to hone, but in the mean time, please keep

this important part of the culture in mind.

日本人は言葉で言ったことと本当に心の中で思っていることが違うときが多々あります。相手にイヤな気

分にさせないように思ってもない事を言ってみたりします。彼らに発する言葉だけがすべてではないという

ことを覚えておいてください。

④ Humility/Self-deprecation 謙遜

Don’t be surprised if you compliment someone’s jacket and hear “Oh, this ugly old thing?” or

tell your host how delicious dinner is only to hear “No, it’s not delicious at all!” Expressions of

humility or self-deprecation are very common in Japan and are often misunderstood. This often

has to do with “tatemae” and “honne,” and even extend to other family members (“My wife is a

terrible cook.”) or co-workers. Don’t worry; it’s completely normal in Japan.

謙遜とは、自分をへりくだって、控えめな態度で振舞う事です。夕飯時、あなたがご飯おいしい！とほめて

も「そんなことないわよ～」と返事がかえってくるかもしれません。不思議に思うかも知れませんが、これが

日本の文化です。

➄ “Eye Contact,” or Staring アイコンタクト

Generally, Japanese people are not comfortable with keeping eye contact for long periods. For

example, you’ll find many people will stare at the wall or the table while talking with you, only

glancing up for a short time when there is a pause in the conversation. Don’t worry, they are still

listening to you! It is different from Western countries, in which you generally show you are listening

by staring intently at the other person, looking away every so often.This is deeply rooted in old

Japanese culture, which we will not explain in detail here. However, be on the lookout for mothers

scolding their children–you might notice that instead of “Look at me when I’m speaking to you!”

They will say “Don’t you look at me, young man!”

日本人はアイコンタクトをあまりしません。人の顔をじっと見ることは失礼に当たる場合があるからです。

また、日本人はシャイなので目をずっとあわすことに慣れていません。ホストファミリーがあなたの目をず

っと見ないからといって嫌われているわけではありません。

⑥ Punctuality 時間を守る

As a general rule, Japanese are very punctual. More than that, the cultural standard of

punctuality is very strict. Being even a little bit late can affect how reliable or trusted you are by

others. Even if you will be a few minutes late, if possible call or e-mail beforehand, and don’t

forget the “sumimasen”! Also, trains are almost always exactly on time (barring any weather or

accidents), and busses are generally on time, though not 100%. Plan accordingly, and enjoy

Japan’s excellent transportation system!

日本人は時間をきっちり守ります。約束の時間に遅れていくことは信用を失うということなので、時間には

遅れないように気をつけましょう。もし時間に遅れそうな場合は、相手に連絡を入れるようにしましょう。

⑦ Showing restraint, and consideration for others 遠慮

Japanese people generally don’t (outwardly) voice what they are thinking or what they want to

do, especially if you ask them outright; instead, they will ask what others want or think before

chipping in. This cultural trend can cause some confusion if you aren’t aware of it. For example,

many times you will be asked “What would you like to eat?” and after choosing, find that what

you want is not what anyone else wants. If you can, try doing as the Japanese do: Hold back

for a bit, return the question and see what other people want before you answer.

日本人は自分のやりたい事、思っていることをはっきり言いません。周りの意見を聞いてからそれに合わ

せようとします。

⑧ Saying “Thank you”, and bowing お礼とお辞儀

Along with “sumimasen”, saying “Thank you” often and the many different kinds of bows used

by Japanese are some of the most common ways Japanese keep things going smoothly. Look

carefully and you will find all sorts of bows used in different situations.

何かあればすぐにお辞儀とお礼をする日本人。日本人と仲良くなるコツは、お辞儀とお礼です。

8 Homestay Trouble… And How to Avoid It（ホームステイトラブル事例集）

Here, you will read some real-life cases of homestay trouble, and some helpful advice on

what could have been done in each case. Remember: Every country’s culture and customs

are different. Knowing what to do beforehand can make all the difference!

よくあるトラブル事例とアドバイスをまとめてみました。

●Missing in Action 帰宅が遅くなり・・・・・・・・ Solution アドバイス

①Without calling home, you take the last train

home. Upon returning home, youfind your host

family has anxiously called the police, asking

them to look for you. On top of all of it, your

family is angry with you for wasting the dinner

they made for you.

ホストファミリーに連絡をしないまま、最終電車で

帰宅。とても心配したホストファミリーは警察に捜

索願を出して大問題となった。夕食も無駄にした

ためホストファミリーとの関係が悪くなった。

If you can’t make it home in time for dinner,

be sure to call your family before they start

preparing dinner (before 5 pm is a good bet).

Also, do not forget to tell them what time you

will be getting home.

夕食の時間までに帰れない時は、ホストファミ

リーが食事の準備をする前に（17 時頃までに）

必ずホストファミリーに連絡をして帰宅時間を

知らせておきましょう。

●That’s the Power of Permission!

許可が必要です。

Solution アドバイス

②You are chatting with a friend on your laptop

when you notice your battery is about to die.

“Hmm… I’ll just borrow my host family’s

adapter—it’s the same type,” you say and take

into your room to continue talking. Meanwhile,

your host family cannot find their adapter and

are unable to use their laptop. Later, when they

discover you took it without permission, they

are angry.

パソコンの充電が切れたので、ホストファミリーの

充電器を勝手に自室で使っていた。ホストファミリ

ーの物を勝手に使ってそのままにしてしまったた

め、ホストファミリーが使いたいときになくて困っ

た。また、勝手に借りられてホストファミリーの気

分を害した。

Remember – getting permission is the key.

No matter how mundane the object or how

much you need to use something, always

ask before using it. A couple words go a long

way to help keep relationships healthy.

断りなしに借りることはとても失礼な事です。ホ

ストファミリーのものを借りる時は必ず許可を取

ってください。

●Dirt Stops at the Genkan!玄関で・・・ Solution アドバイス

③It’s summer, and you love wearing

sandals—without socks, of course; you are

fashion conscious—which means your feet get

dirty, and after a while, your carpet and futon

are dirty from the dirt you brought in with you.

However, your host family are too

embarrassed to tell you, and it’s causing a lot

of stress.

夏の間は裸足にサンダルのスタイルだったため、

足の裏がいつも汚く、カーペットや布団が汚れてし

まった。しかし、ゲストに伝えることが出来ずホスト

ファミリーのストレスになってしまった。

Remember, the Japanese custom of taking

shoes off before entering a home isn’t just

for relaxing tired feet; it’s to keep dirt out as

well. If you have dirty feet, wash them before

going into your room.

日本では靴を脱いで家にあがるので、足の裏

が汚れている場合は、部屋にあがる前に足だ

けでも洗うように気遣いましょう。

●Don’t Throw Away a Good Relationship

食事の時に・・・・・・・

Solution アドバイス

④On several occasions, you have thrown

away large portions of the meals your host

family made for you because you weren’t

hungry, or didn’t care for something. Not

wanting to make a scene, you throw out your

food quietly on your own. However, this causes

your family to feel quite hurt, and after a while

of this, they ask for you to find a different host

family.

ホストファミリーの作ったご飯を平気で捨てたた

め、ホストファミリーがとても傷ついた。何度も続い

たためホストファミリーが辛くなり、ホストファミリー

チェンジとなった。

If you can’t finish your meal for some reason,

always ask your family what you should do

with the leftovers first. Throwing away food

without asking is quite a rude thing to do in

Japan, and your family will feel insulted.

ご飯を残す場合は、必ずホストファミリーに余っ

たご飯をどうすればよいのか聞いてください。

いきなり捨てるとホストファミリーは傷つきま

す。

●Shocking Electric Bills 電気代について Solution アドバイス

➄You often forget to turn off the A/C before

going out, and after several instances of this,

your family asks you to leave because of the

escalating electric bills.

クーラーをつけっぱなしで出かけてしまうことが何

日も続き、電気の無駄遣いにホストファミリーが怒

ってしまい、出て行って欲しいと言われてしまっ

た。

Electricity rates are some of the highest in

the world in Japan—make it a habit to turn

off any A/C or heaters when you leave your

room to save your family money and keep

everyone happy.

自分のお部屋を出る時はエアコンや電気のス

イッチを必ず OFF にする事を癖づけましょう。

●Let’s Keep It Clean, Now 掃除 Solution アドバイス

⑥Even after your host family requests that you

keep your room a little more tidy, you still can’t

seem to tidy up, and after a while, your family

asks you to change to a different family.

お部屋の使い方が汚いと言われたが改善でき

ず、ホストファミリーに一緒に生活する事が出来な

いと判断され、ホストファミリーチェンジをする事に

なってしまった。

Remember, though you are a member of the

family during your homestay, you are still a

guest and you are only temporarily using

your room. Eating in your room, leaving

damp towels on the floor, making a mess or

damaging things are a way to sour your

relationship with your family. Clean up after

yourself, and consider that Japanese

standards for cleanliness are (generally)

pretty high.

滞在中はあなたのお部屋ですが、ホストファミリ

ーに借りているお部屋です。食べ散らかした

り、濡れたタオルをそのまま畳や床に置いた

り、お部屋を汚したり、痛ませたりしてしまうよう

なことはしないようにしましょう。お部屋のお掃

除も定期的に行ってください。

●Who Moved My Keys?

家の備品、借りている物を・・・・・・・

Solution アドバイス

⑦You accidently lose your house keys, forcing

the family to replace the locks on the doors and

ask you to pay 50,000 yen to cover it.

借りていた家の鍵を無くし、家の鍵を取り換えなけ

ればいけなくなったため、5 万円の弁償をする事

になってしまった。

Keys are extremely important. Some locks

are even more expensive to replace, so take

good care of your keys, and don’t lose them!

家の鍵は特に大切なものです。もっと高額の費

用を払わなければいけないお家もありますの

で、無くさないように十分注意しましょう。

●Mold is NOT Your Friend お布団の使い方 Solution アドバイス

⑧“It’s too much work to fold my futon every

day, and I’m just going to sleep here again

tonight,” you think and leave your futon out on

the tatami floor for a few days. After a few days,

you find that the tatami and futon both have

grown mold, and you end up paying for a new

futon and tatami mats.

お布団を毎日畳まず、引きっぱなしにしていたら、

床と布団にカビが生えてしまい、新しい畳と布団

を弁償しなければいけなくなってしまった。

Futon are made to be folded up every day,

and regularly hung out to dry and air out. If

you don’t know how to fold it, or what do to,

ask your hosts.

お布団は毎日畳んで、時々干しましょう。分か

らない時はやり方をホストファミリーに聞いてく

ださい。

●Lost in Translation

ホストファミリーへの連絡

Solution アドバイス

⑨On your way home from your first day of

classes, you get lost, and you used up your

smartphone’s battery looking up maps online.

With no way to contact the school or your

family, the police pick you up. However, you

aren’t carrying your host family’s contact info,

Homestay-in-Japan’s phone number, and can’t

contact anyone. You end up spending the rest

of the day sitting in the police box—with no

smartphone to pass the time with, either!

学校初日の帰り道に迷い帰れなくなった。携帯の

電池もなくなり、連絡方法が全くない中、警察に保

護された。ホストファミリーの連絡先、ホームステ

イインジャパンの緊急連絡先も持っていなかった

ので、誰にも連絡できず、丸一日交番で過ごし

た。

You are in a foreign country, and if you can’t

yet speak enough of the language to explain

your situation, it goes without saying that

you should always have your family’s name,

address and phone number, as well as

Homestay-in-Japan’s emergency contact

info and number, on paper, somewhere with

you at all times.

何かあった時に連絡できるようにホストファミリ

ーの連絡先、ホームステイインジャパンの緊急

連絡先の情報は持ち歩くようにして下さい。

●Bicycle Trouble 自転車 Solution アドバイス

⑬You leave the bicycle you borrowed from

your host family in front of the station, and it

gets impounded by the city. You end up paying

a several thousand yen fine.

ホストファミリーから借りた自転車を駅前の路上に

停めておいたらレッカー移動され、数千円の罰金

を払わなければならなかった。

Always park your bicycle in the proper

parking area. It’s against the law to park in

areas off limits.

自転車は必ず駐輪場に停めましょう。路上駐輪

は違法のため撤去されるということを覚えてお

きましょう。

●Don’t Skimp on the Showers シャワー Solution アドバイス

⑩After two days of not showering, your family

can definitely tell that you haven’t—we’ll just

leave it at that

シャワーを二日浴びず汗の臭いがきついというこ

とで、ホストファミリーが不快な思いをした。

Japan is a very humid country, and almost

everyone takes showers or baths every day.

It may not be what you are used to

(especially from countries with water

restrictions and/or different customs), but

when in Rome... or in this case, Japan, do as

the Japanese do!

日本は湿度の多い気候なので毎日シャワーを

浴びるようにしましょう。

●Money Trouble at the ATM

お金が引き出せず・・・

Solution アドバイス

⑪After waiting until you are down to your last

couple yen, you go to the ATM and are

surprised to find your card isn’t accepted, and

you end up having to wait several very long

days for your parents to wire you some money.

お金がなくなるギリギリに ATM に行ったが引き出

せず、両親からの送金を数日間待たなくてはいけ

ず、大変困った。

There may be many ATMs in Japan, but

many people find that their cards are either

not accepted, or have withdrawal limits. It’s

always a good idea to confirm where your

card can be used, and if there are any limits.

Remember, It’s against homestay policy to

borrow money from your host family, so plan

ahead.

日本の ATM から引き出せないケースや限度額

がある場合も多々ありますので、まずは自分の

カードが使用できる場所や限度額を確認してお

きましょう。ホストファミリーはお金を貸すことが

できませんので、必ず現金も持参しましょう。

●Apologize first, explain yourself later

まず謝るのが日本式

Solution アドバイス

⑭One night, you return to your homestay late

at night and, realizing you left your house key

in your room and can't unlock the door, you

ring the doorbell and ask your host mother to

open the door. After waking the family with the

sound of the doorbell, your host mother asks

you, "Why did you have me open the door

when you have your own key?" to which you

reply, frustrated at your own mistake, "Well, I

forgot my key in my room, so I was locked out.

There was nothing I could do!" without

apologizing or saying sorry. Your host mother is

clearly irritated and you have left a bad

impression. 深夜に帰宅したゲストは家の鍵を部

屋に忘れたため家に入れず、ドアベルを鳴らして

ホストマザーにドアを開けてもらった。家族全員を

起こしてしまったため、ホストマザーはなぜ鍵があ

るのにドアベルを鳴らしたのかを尋ねた。ゲストは

すぐさま「鍵を忘れたんだから仕方ないじゃ

ん！！」と言い訳するだけで「すみません」の一言

がなく、ホストマザーが怒ってしまった。

Was forgetting your key such a terrible

mistake? Should you have stayed outside on

the porch all night? Of course not! The

problem here is the lack of an apology.

Simply saying "There was nothing I could

do!" or "It's not my fault." doesn't go over

very well in Japan. Instead, remember that

you have caused an inconvenience for the

other person, regardless of the

circumstances. Before any explanations or

excuses, simply apologize -- and it doesn't

hurt to apologize again at the end. Oh--and

do remember to bring your key with you.

「仕方がない」「自分は悪くない」という場面でも

迷惑をかけてしまったことに対してまず謝るの

が日本的な礼儀です。言い訳や理由を説明す

る前にまずは一言謝るようにしましょう。
