9th August 2018 ISSUE: Term 3, Week 3
Next week our school will be celebrating SSO Week. On Tuesday we are organising a special morning tea and every SSO (School Support Officer) and other support staff will be recognised throughout the week by staff and students. SSOs play a vital part in the successful running of our school and working with our teachers and students in classrooms. I would like to thank our SSOs and support staff for all that they do. We have a great team. Please feel free to join in with our appreciation.

PRINCIPAL’S NEWS
LIFE AT CLG As always, it has been a busy start to the term at CLG. Here is a snap shot of the first 3
weeks.
nature play is happening behind the Grange building
our year 4/5 classes had a Science incursion
many students attended our school discos
rooms 04 and 18 hosted wonderful assemblies
we had over 40 people attend a school tour
our literacy and numeracy coaches have been working with learning teams
band practice began for our instrumental music students
a number of interested students participated in the ICAS English test
every teacher has been released this week for 100 minutes in their year level
learning teams to work with Anne Pillman in supporting their learning design
auditions were held to become part of ‘CLG Dance’
all students in years 4 to 7 are participating this week in a federal government
wellbeing and engagement survey (previously called the middle years development
index)
all classes are involved this week in a workshop with Tricia from the Commonwealth
Bank teaching students about the importance of financial literacy - of course the
lessons are very different across the school from Reception to Year 7
the year 1 teachers are beginning the new phonics check mandated by the
Department for Education
our year 2/3 classes went on an excursion to the Botanical Gardens
growth and development lessons are beginning this week with our year 6/7 students
with a facilitator from Kidz Biz
… and the term is just beginning!
SCHOOL PHOTOS Next week we will be having our school photos. I am pleased to advise the school
community that as of next year the photos will be in term 1. I have sought the change for a
number of reasons including having photographs earlier in the year for all of our students
to assist with our confidential student records and school reports. Taking photos in the
warmer months is also a lot easier for students and families.
Please note: although our school policy is to have hair longer than shoulder length tied
back, on our annual school photo day students are welcome to style their hair as parents
feel appropriate. It does not need to be tied up or back.
END OF YEAR DISMISSAL As you are aware, on the last day of each term, school concludes an hour earlier at
2:10pm. This will continue to be the case in term 3. At the Governing Council meeting this
week, to assist with a range of matters, approval was given to conclude term 4 only at
the earlier time of 1:00pm. This is when students would normally start eating their lunch.
As I am sure you can appreciate the last day of the year is not the most productive and so
rather than coming back to class for 20 minutes after lunch, we will end the school year at
lunchtime after our whole school assembly. OSHC will begin as soon as school is
dismissed. More details will be provided later in the year. We just wanted to give families
and carers lots of prior notice.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN ROOM 4?
Discovering and learning through
science experiments, digital and design
technologies.
WHAT HAPPENING IN ROOM 15?
STUDENTS AS EVALUATORS
Students have the opportunity to give feedback to each other and the teacher.
“We give feedback by talking to partners so we can improve on our work”
Anika, Rosie & Henry
“You give help for next time” Penny
“We get feedback when we ask questions” Gene & Hugh
“We get feedback about if we’re behaving good or bad” Ethan
“We get feedback from our class, not just our teachers” Tom R
“Feedback is important because we need to know what stage we’re up to and so we know what we need to improve”
Maddie & Alannah
In Room 15 the Black Jaguars are proud of their “student voice”. Here are some examples of what this looks like in our classroom.
STUDENTS AS DECISION MAKERS
Not all decisions are made by the teacher!
“I think we get to make our decisions often”
Anika & Rosie “We have some choice of how we learn and improve”
Henry & Mitchell “We have choices to learn in finishing time”
Indie “We need SRC to give feedback and vote”
Henry, Mitchell & Ethan “In class meetings we vote because then we get a fair
answer” Gene, Hugh & Will
STUDENTS AS 21st CENTURY LEARNERS
Children are confident, resilient, powerful learners with strong collaboration skills.
“We are resilient when we have a go” Gene & Hugh
“We share ideas with each other” Melissa
“We work in partners to help each other improve” Henry
STUDENTS AS TEACHERS
Students are valued as experts that teach and learn from each other
“We help people if they are stuck” Tom R
“We teach people to know other things” Pru
“We teach each other when we need to spell something, and in maths we help each other to answer questions”
Indie & Penny “We teach each other when we don’t know how to do it”
Gene & Hugh
“We help each other with sports and other things” Max, Jordan & Scarlett
“We are expert learners by teaching skills that some people don’t know”
Henry
STUDENTS AS LEARNING DESIGNERS
We are beginning to explore what it means to be learning designers. Students are taking ownership over how they show what they know, and how they can challenge and
stretch themselves.
“We can challenge ourselves in learning by asking for harder work, and by using technical & precise words”
Mitchell & Henry
“We challenge ourselves by trying new things, and we get learning that stretches us”
Gene, Hugh & Melissa
The Jaguars wanted to use recycled plastics to make art pieces that communicate a message about how much waste we are creating and the impact it has on the environment. In this photo they are working together to cut, wash, dry and sort soft plastics from the Disco .
This art project has been guided by student voice.
SRC NEWS
Thank you to those who came to the disco, we had heaps of fun. We raised around $1000! We were disappointed that
the staff/teachers and SRC executives spent extra time at school to run the year 5-7 Disco that only around 60 students went to, so the SRC is going to think about what changes need to be made. One of the things that we were really happy about was that this disco we only had 1 small bag of rubbish that went to land fill, this was a huge improvement from our first disco. We would like to thank Miss Chamber’s class (Rm 15) for using the chip packets and taking the unused ones to Coles for soft recycling. Also thank you for taking the cans and pop tops to the metal depo to also be recycled.
Congratulations to the winners of CLG’s got talent, Olivia B, Syla T and Cody, we hope that you enjoy your free lunch order prize! Great job to everyone who participated as well, we were really impressed by your talents! Just a reminder that
we still it is Nude Food every Wednesday. Thank you.
IT’s A REAL BOY!

THE ART CORNER
This article is about spruiking the benefits of digital art. I myself was a big skeptic, as my belief was that visual arts is about learning the skills required to use hands-on resources to create works which can be displayed. Being pretty useless at technology, I saw this as a chance to learn new skills to improve myself as an artist and a teacher. Boy, was my skepticism wrong! We have been using procreate on the ipads this term with wonderful success. I have learnt so much from students trying things and sharing their ideas with not only me, but their classmates as well. At the annual Visual Art Educators conference I attended last week, one of our presenters was the Manager of Education and Training at Rising Sun pictures. This is an Adelaide based VFX company which has worked on major box office films such as Thor: Ragnarok, Tomb Raider, Peter Rabbit, The Wolverine and some of the Harry Potter franchise movies to name but a few... Doing art on procreate teaches students the language of art - terms such as Opacity, texture, and perspective. It teaches them the skills used to apply different features of art in their own work. Procreate makes creating stunning visual art work quite simple. We have been creating sunset and space pictures that are not only visually appealing, but uses many of the tricks used by special effects companies in major films - looking at making objects 3 dimensional, and using lighting and colour effectively.
Shane Pluck Art Teacher
In a world where everything is becoming digitalised, valuable skills which may help our children get employment in the future can only be a good thing - and with the amount of money spent on making films mind blowing, these skills could open up very lucrative windows. I am not a salesman for Apple (although a cut of their profits would be nice!), but for $15, and if your child is keen to improve artistic skills which can be translated to their artwork in any medium, it is well worth the money... Some examples of the student creations will be in the next newsletter, and will probably appear on classroom blogs in the very near future. We have also been looking at street art, with a particular focus on art in South Australia. With SALA (South Australian living Artists) being on for the month of August, it is a great opportunity to get students out to appreciate the art of living South Australian artists. Adelaide is scattered with wonderful street art of many kinds, including murals, sculpture and art created using many different mediums.
SPORTS DAY HOUSE CAPTAINS Sports Day is fast approaching and will be held on Friday the 14th of September. All year 5, 6 and 7 students voted for the House Captains. Congratulations to:
