7Club Member Participation and the Jam Band
By Don Savant
At a recent board meeting there was much dis-cussion about fostering a welcoming informalatmosphere before our meetings and during breaksso that club members will feel encouraged to bringtheir accordions to every meeting and play sometunes andor join in a jam with other members
Club co-founder Dominic Palmisano recalledldquoWhen the club first started there was a glut ofplayers wanting to perform at each meeting We hadto promise those who didnrsquot get to play a turn at thenext one People brought their accordions to everymeeting hoping for a chance to play during breaksand there were always members warming up beforethe formal program The sound of the instrumentwas omni-present However as the club maturedthis happy informal scene began to disappearrdquo
Today our meeting format is based on solidindividual performances with only a token amountof informal free play by our members-which is nowembodied in the Jam Band The Jam Band hasdemonstrated its ability to entice members to bringtheir instruments and enjoy the group activity Itrsquosalso starting to sound great ldquoSo letrsquos use the JamBand as the vehicle to invigorate the club and bringback those moments of spontaneity and memberparticipation in all our future meetingsrdquo suggestedDominic
JAM BAND performing atDecember 2012 SFAC Club meeting
Based on these thoughts the board has decided tohave the Jam Band meet before all future meetingsrather than merely every other month Members areencouraged to bring their accordions to all futuremeetings and to play during breaks as well as beforethe formal meeting Members are also encouraged tobring multiple copies of music to share with otherJam Band participants In this way the Jam Bandrepertoire can evolve and retain its spontaneityrather than remain static
Dominic had one other comment and made a verygenerous offer ldquoWhen we first started the club wehad instruments available for others to play Wefigured it was the best way to encourage members orguests to pick up an accordion and try it outPerhaps we could add this feature to our monthlymeetings as well Personally Irsquom willing to bringone to make available for anyone to pick up and playand not worry about it being damagedrdquo
Thanks Dominic for your insight as well as yourgenerosity
