THE ROTARY CLUB OF CHICO 9/20/2011 PRESIDENT MELANIE BASSETT “ C elebrating Heroes ” Next Meeting Secrets to a 100 Year Lifestyle Is it luck that gets you to 100? Is it luck that allows you to maintain your quality of life into your golden years? The answer is unequivocally NO! The secrets of getting to 100 years and beyond, and more importantly en- joying the process, will be revealed in this brief 20 minute presentation. How is it possible to teach someone the secrets of a 100 year lifestyle in just 20 minutes? That’s the easy part! It’s actually following the simple rec- ommendations that will prove difficult for most of the people in the audi- ence. In our technologically advanced society in which we’re all racing to see how many widgets we can fit on the tip a pin and we’re bragging about how much we can accomplish without ever leaving our couch…choosing to let go of some of that technology and deciding to take the long way around may prove to be too much work for some. But for those that do they will stack the deck in their favor when it comes to living to 100 and enjoying the journey! Dr. Jason Gonzales, DC has been helping to restore the health of those suffering from chronic pain and chronic health problems for over 4 years. He graduated Magna Cum Laude, with great honor, from Life Chiropractic College West in 2007. While in school Dr. Gonzales focused on Chiroprac- tic Neurology and attended over 200 hours of post-graduate level seminars. Dr Gonzales also participated in the El Salvador Outreach Program and twice flew to El Salvador to provide chiropractic care for those who could not afford health care. Upon graduation he completed his postgraduate cer- tification in Upper Cervical Specific Chiropractic through the That Some- thing Coaching Program. Dr. Gonzales graduated from the University of Washington in 2002 with a B.A. in Psychology, however he found his way into the chiropractic profes- sion by way of his athletic career. Dr. Gonzales was a former semi- professional road cyclist and competed for 3 years on the national circuit. In an effort to keep his body in top condition Dr. Gonzales was under regu- lar chiropractic care, as were most of his fellow athletes. He was so im- pressed with how much he was helped by chiropractic and by the kinds of conditions he saw being helped by chiropractic that he pursued a career in chiropractic after his cycling career came to an end. Page 3 ANNOUNCEMENTS CONTINUING Melanie called on Curt Hull to discuss the presiding Team, the Intellectuals. Curt expressed his dismay with the fact that when his name and the word “Intellectuals” were used in the same sen-tence he heard snickers in the crowd. The team has had several breakfast and noon meetings with a social planned next week and another in October. Team member Rene Vercruyssen has recruited many team members for the Labyrinth project and planning is underway to assist Tod K. on Make-A-Difference Day in downtown Chico. A new member lunch is scheduled for September 29. New members are defined as anyone who joined the Club since August 1, 2010. RSVP to Sam Beasley. 25 additional Rotarians are needed for the Children’s Shopping Spree on October 13 from 2:45pm – 5:00pm. See Rose Krepelka. Melanie encouraged Club members to support the Butte Humane Society at their fundraiser on October 15 RECOGNITION AND FINE TIME Walt Schafer was recognized for his work in Tanzania and his $5,000 contribution to the Rotary International Foundation. He looked very dapper in his Rotary Biking “suit” (no tie!). Walt’s hero is his high school teacher and coach, Harold Madden. 8 bells. Rose Krepelka’s hero is Princess Diana. She recently had the pleasure of seeing an exhibit of Diana’s life and saw her as a great contributor to the betterment of society. 8 bells. Kym Campbell’s hero is Mr. Rogers and Captain Kangaroo (honest). Apparently the urban myth that Mr. Rogers was a Navy Seal is actually true and the Captain was also a war hero, re-ceiving the Navy Cross. They were excellent role models for her children! Kym noted her Fa-thers service record and that he lived a full life prior to passing recently at age 92. 6 bells. Curt Hull’s heroes are his Mom and Dad, who, we all agree, must be heroes for having a great son like Curt. We did find out that his Mom really did teach him how to play golf, which explains a few things. Curt wasn’t his talkative self and took 14 bells. RAFFLE Jeff McCready was lucky once, but not twice, and took home $20. Not bad for a new guy.

A 20 year member of Kiwanis in San Jose, Les served as club president twice. He is active in the Chico Chamber and was an Eagle Scout. Les has two grown children, Courtney and Nicholas.

September20, 2011 MEETING REPORT CONTINUED Page 4 PROGRAM Membership Syl Lucena Our very own Syl Lucena, who has been in the Club for 47 years, led off the program letting us know that we began Melanie’s year with 223 members including 158 active members, 56 Senior Active Excused (SAX) and 9 Honorary members. As we all now know, SAX don’t have to attend meetings and only go because of the goodness of their hearts. The “Rule of 85” determines SAX eligibility – age plus years in Rotary must be equal or greater than 85. Our new membership goal is 20 for Melanie’s year with the intent to keep our membership steady. So far 4 have been proposed and there have been 8 resignations for various reasons. Melanie expects at least 2 new members per team. Jennifer Griggs reported on her work with education and retention and the subcommittee’s focus to reduce resigna-tions from the Club. She discussed new member luncheons, SAX/new member socials and follow up with new mem-bers. Katy Thoma discussed the “Get Your Ask On” recruitment contest for the teams. The first team with 2 new mem-bers by February 1 receives 500 points, the second 300 points and th3e third 150 points. She talked about seeking out quality members with proven community leadership. On November 15 there will be a reception for potential new members with Stan Thompson speaking on “What it means to be in Rotary.” Rory Rottschalk took us in a different direction with the “Strategic Tutoring Partnership” with Rosedale Elemen-tary School. Rory needs several Rotarians for this school mentoring/tutoring opportunity that can change the destiny and course of a human being. All that it takes is one hour per week for 4-6 weeks beginning the week of October 3. See Rory if you are interested in this life changing event. September20, 2011: Rotary Team Social-Teleporters
