Foreword by Vice-Principal

Welcome New Staff

In Boon Lay Garden Primary School, there is a common purpose to prepare our pupils for the future by equipping them with both the skill set and mindset to take on opportunities and face challenges ahead. It is also imperative to gird them with a set of values and beliefs that will anchor them as they make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

Beyond the constant effort in ensuring stability and sustainability in providing academic vigour, there is tremendous work put in to ensure pupils experience a quality school life. I am heartened to see the pupils’ earnest interactions, teachers and support staff filled with dedication and care for our pupils, the support of parents, the Parent Support Group, School Advisory Committee, alumni and community partners.

I would like to thank the staff of BLGPS for their warm welcome as well as their time in helping me to understand the school ethos and practices; prerequisite to me value-adding to the school - the Garden Where Diversity Blossoms.

Values Education

Miss Siti Amirah Arman (Teacher-in-Charge)

The Character and Citizenship Education Department (CCE)organised an inter-class competition to showcase creativity and effort in demonstrating the importance of character education. The CAREs Corner Classroom Competition was conducted over 4 weeks, giving teachers and pupils time to plan and decorate their classroom. Pupils decided on an area in their classrooms to showcase their CAREs Corner. BLGians were encouraged to use their imagination to decorate their classroom’s CAREs Corner and some classes even penned down thoughts on what good character means to them. Judges from the CCE Department and student leaders were impressed by everyone’s efforts. Congratulations to P1/6, P2/6, P3/7, P4/1, P5/7, P6/8 for winning best class of their level!

Mr Shaun Lim(Values in Action Coordinator)

A group of 29 students from Millenia Institute (MI) visited BLGPS to share tips on anti-littering, keeping the school environment clean and recycling.

The MI students made concurrent presentations of about 15 minutes to our Primary 2 and Primary 5 pupils in their classrooms. On top of that, they set up booths with posters and got pupils to take part in short quizzes.

Mrs Alfie - Nurul(Subject Head / Character and Citizenship Education)

The After School programme is specially created for selected Primary 5 and Primary 6 pupils, to have a fun and meaningful engagement with their teachers and friends from 3.30pm to 5.30pm. Gardening, caring for the fish, handicraft, cooking and kids’ athletics are some of the lifeskill programmes that the pupils can benefit from. Apart from engaging them meaningfully, pupils forge a stronger bond with their teachers and peers. The active interaction between the teachers and pupils will help to strengthen the teacher-student relationship in an informal context.

Trips for International Experience

Mr Ng Ee Noch, Mr Muhammad Ariff Mohamed Noor, Miss Nur Liyana Mohd Zulkiflee (Teachers-in-Charge)

From 17th - 21st March 2014, 35 selected pupils from various Primary 5 classes had the opportunity to visit Jakarta and Bandung, Indonesia, on a cultural immersion trip.

Prior to the trip, some of the pupils collaborated with students from Lilin Bangsa International School on a common science project. The visit enabled them to communicate with their new friends face-to-face.

During the visit, pupils had the unique opportunity of learning side-by-side their Indonesian counterparts.

BLGians also visited a tea plantation and a museum, tried their hands at clog painting and played the angklung.

It was indeed a rich and meaningful experience for the pupils as they learnt more about their new friends from Indonesia.

Miss Nur Liyana Mohd Zulkiflee (Teacher- in-Charge)

11 pupils and 3 teachers from Lilin Bangsa Internation School visited BLGPS on 26th and 27th March 2014. Pupils from LBIS experienced a full classroom immersion with P5/4, throughout the 2 days. Pupils from P5/4 along with our visitors, also went on a Learning Journey to Singapore Science Centre to take part in activities conducted by MindFest 2014. A great bond amongst the pupils was definitely formed throughout the two days and we look forward to more visits in future.

Meaningful School - Community Partnership

Mdm Nurashlyn Abdul Rashid(Subject Head / Publicity & Partnership)

Previously known as Parents Action Group in Education (PAGE), the BLGPS Parents Support Group (PSG) plays an important role in promoting and fostering a partnership between home and school to benefit pupils in areas of educational interest and welfare. The committee also plays a part in building a positive and meaningful two-way communication channel between the school and parents.

This year, the committee has a strength of 17 Executive Committee members. It is led by Chairperson, Mr Tok Watt Chin, and a growing number of active members supporting the school in areas such as Teaching and Learning, Character Excellence, Celebrations and School Events, Learning Journeys and Fund Raising.

The PSG organised a bonding activity on Saturday, 10th May. Members of the PSG participated in various games and attended a talk entitled ‘Values are caught, not just taught’ before proceeding to The River Safari. It was an enjoyable day and the members certainly got to know each other better.

Mdm Nurashlyn Abdul Rashid(Subject Head / Publicity & Partnership)

BLGPS believes in forging a strong partnership with parents to help our pupils achieve their fullest potential. To enhance family life, FamilyMatters@School parenting workshops are organised throughout the year to equip parents with effective parenting skills. Topics such as “Enhancing your Child’s Intelligence”, “Anger Management” and “Scream-free Parenting” are some examples of workshops that will help foster better parent-child understanding and relationship. Parents will be notified of the workshops conducted each month through a circular from the school. More information can also be retrieved from the school website.

Based on the needs analysis conducted this year, we will also be conducting the workshops in Mother Tongue Languages. We hope you will make time to attend these knowledge-filled workshops and bring back some practical tips. For any enquiries, kindly email Mdm Bushra Tanvir, the School Coordinator, at [email protected].

Talent Development and Innovation

Miss Deenise Yang (Teacher-in-Charge)

The Singapore Amazing Flying Machine competition is an annual competition which is jointly organized by DSO National Laboratories and Singapore Science Centre. This is the first time that our school took part in this prestigious competition that has attracted students from over 100 institutions across Singapore.

Based on the results of the paper plane folding competition held internally in school, 16 pupils from Primary 4 and Primary 5 were selected to enter the competition. This year, 4 teams entered the Paper Plane Category for Primary Schools while Team Golden Bull entered the Radio Control Flight Category for Secondary and other Tertiary Institutions. The pupils in Team Golden Bull were the youngest among all the contestants!

It was no easy task for these 16 pupils who had to juggle with their studies and training sessions. Even though the given time for them to prepare was less than a month, they did their best to do our school proud. One of our school teams came in 5th place in the Paper Plane Category. Team Golden Bull also won a special recognition award from the judges as the pupils had demonstrated passion, enthusiasm and showed confidence in flying the Radio Controlled Plane.

Mrs Lum Shui Farn (Teacher-in-Charge)

On 29th March 2014, 17 pupils from Primary 2, Primary 4 and Primary 5 took part in Destination Imagination organised by ACS (Junior). It is an annual competition that aims to cultivate pupils’ problem-solving skills and encourages team work and creative thinking. The pupils took part in two challenges – Central and Instant. Each Challenge is open-ended. Pupils learnt and experienced the creative process from imagination to innovation. All of them had fun and gained confidence in their abilities to solve problems posed in the Challenges.

Mrs Alfie-Nurul(Subject Head / Character and Citizenship Education)

MOE Guidance Branch (CCE) invited the school for a sharing in the use of the Rating Tool for Social-Emotional Competencies (RTSEC) during the MOE Excel Fest. Our school was one of the pilot schools to use the rating tool kit for the Primary 2 pupils in 2013. RTSEC is a developmental tool used by the school to determine the social-emotional competency of the pupils. The Primary 2 teachers answered 30 questions about their pupils. This enable the school to design suitable programmes for our pupils to meet their social-emotional needs.

Mr Ng Ee Noch and Miss Mok Wan Kay(Presenters at the Conference)

“When a student can Google anything, a teacher gives a student the reason to Google it.” – Dr. Yong Zhao’s keynote speech at International conference on Teaching and Learning (iCTLT) 2014.

In this age of technology, we can learn anything and everything at our fingertips, using our fingertips. As teachers, we are not there to teach, but to motivate our pupils to want to learn. Sharing at iCTLT has opened our eyes and our world to the wide array of resources and ideas out there that can help us to motivate our pupils to learn. Like minded educators gathered together to see how BLGians use iPads to learn. Now, we’re also excited to learn about how other teachers motivate their pupils, and in turn, motivate BLGians to learn!

Fostering Group Interaction @ MOE ExCel Fest 2014

Mrs Aflie – Nurul (Subject Head / Character and Citizenship Education)

This session focuses on the teaching of values and how students can acquire social-emotional learning competencies in a fun and meaningful way. The school believes in the theoretical underpinnings and pedagogical strategies by Gary Smit and Thomas Lickona where the use of games and the involvement between parents and students is important towards character building. The feedback by teachers and students has shown the positive impact that the programme has created for the school. Participants will gain an understanding on the use of games, videos and space to provide the students with the different experiences and opportunities to develop them into a critical and creative thinker, leader and contributor. They will be able to take away strategies to adopt and adapt according to their school culture.

Art Appreciation Beyond Sight Exhibition @ MOE ExCel Fest 2014

Fostering Group Interaction @ MOE ExCel Fest 2014

Mrs Audrey Choo – Yap Wenyun (Art Coordinator)

The Aesthetics Department was honored to be selected as part of the MOE ExCEL Fest 2014 Exhibition held at Suntec Convention Centre on 11th and 12th April 2014.

The 2-day exhibition provided us with the opportunity to showcase our 3-D Sculpting Arts programme which comprises of a variety of art making though different mediums.

Not everyone can paint or draw well. Many in fact, interpret art to be either painting or a piece of sketch and hence, dislike art. BLGians are, and can be good with their hands. They also possess natural creativity and flair towards building objects. This programme allows pupils to explore different mediums to develop their perspective and skills in sculpting, transiting from 2-D to 3-D using conventional tools to modern technology to express their artworks.

This exhibition provided boundless learning experiences for our pupil representatives involved. They had the opportunity to walk our visitors through their sculpting journey in school with confidence and pride. They offered a different perspective towards the making of art and it was definitely an experience not to be forgotten.

This exhibition has affirmed our commitment to our pupils “To bring out the Artist(e) in every child through Cultivating pupils’ appreciation for the Arts through meaningful experience.”

Celebrations and Commemorations

Mdm Siti Nur Baeyah(Student Leadership Coordinator)

12th February 2014 was a special day for a selected group of student leaders in the school as they were officially invested into the school’s Prefectorial Board. These pupils had been selected due to their consistent display of the school’s CAREs values in their daily conduct with their teachers and peers. The ceremony began with Mrs Ong’s address to the school. After receiving her red sash from Mrs Ong, the Head Prefect, Singi Das, of P6/8, then introduced the remaining members of the Prefect EXCO and the school prefects. We hope that the prefects, led by members of the Prefect EXCO, will serve the school well and be good role models to the rest of the school.

Ms Sewa Duu Jong(Head of Department / Mother Tongue Languages)

We had an exhilarating Chinese New Year Celebration concert in our school this year. To kick start the concert, we surprised the school with exciting Wushu performances by our very own Wushu Team.

This year, we had the rare opportunity of watching a live lion dance performance in the hall. The Lion Dance is traditionally believed to expel bad luck as the Chinese usher in the New Year. Pupils were totally blown away by the stunning performance. The professional lion dance troupe threw auspicious sweets to pupils to bless them with good luck!

As part of the tradition at BLGPS, the Chinese Orchestra and Chinese Dancers also enthralled the audience with lovey music and joyful dancing. Adorable Primary 2 pupils put up their own version of a lion dance to entertain the audience.

For our grand finale, some teachers were invited on stage to do a short catwalk with pupils in their traditional costumes. It was definitely a sight to behold!

Celebrations and Commemorations

Miss Liyana Zulkiflee (Social Studies Coordinator)

Our school commemorated Total Defence Day with this year’s theme being “Defending Singapore, Our Home.” There was an assembly talk by Vice-Principal, Mrs Lau Whee Sien, emphasising the importance of the 5 Pillars of Total Defence – Military, Civil, Economics, Social and Psychological. Mother Tongue teachers conducted CCE lessons in class and pupils played puzzles during recess to reinforce their learning. The highlight of the day was a fire drill conducted in school to test out the emergency-preparedness of the school community. The session went on well and everyone passed with flying colours!

Mdm Stacy Chow Yuh Lan(Teachers In-Charge)

This year, we kick-started the celebration of International Friendship Day with an astounding International Drums Performance during assembly. Our pupils had fun learning to sing a song in Tagalog during community singing. To help our pupils learn about and appreciate other cultures in cosmopolitan Singapore and nurture in our pupils the spirit of friendship and collaboration among different people, we put together a series of activities for all BLGians.

Effloresco 2014 (Latin for “to bloom and blossom”), the school’s annual prize-giving ceremony, was a celebration of both academic and non-academic achievements of our pupils. Held on 14th March 2014, pupils who were exemplary in their studies and character were awarded with prizes from various categories.

Mrs Premala Sekaran, former Chairperson of the Parents Action Group in Education (2002 – 2013) was invited to grace the occasion. Mrs Premala Sekaran was also one of the recipients of the Parents Action Group in Education (PAGE) Long Service Award. The award which was presented for the first time, aimed to recognise the dedication of our parent volunteers.

We also had the privilege of being in the company of our ex-Vice Principal, Mdm Michelle Loh, Chairman and members of the School Advisory Committee (SAC) and Parents Support Group (PSG). The event was also well-supported by parents, staff and Performing Arts instructors who were also present.

The audience was especially impressed with the varied talents at BLGPS, from the energetic moves of the Hoopaerobics to the melodious Chinese Orchestra and Ukulele performances. Overall, it was a glorious occasion for all prize winners and performers as their collective effort led to the success of the event.

Quality Teaching and Learning

Mrs Lee-Ng Yick Kit (Head of Department / Science)

The school has embarked on using the Habits of Mind (HOM) to enable BLGians to behave intelligently when they are faced with challenging situations. The decision was made in consultation with the teachers following the result analysis in 2013. HOM equips our pupils holistically for the challenges of the 21st century and enables our pupils to be self-directed learners.

During the March holiday staff retreat, teachers learnt more about the 16 HOM through team-bonding activities. Ideas on how HOM could be infused in the classroom were also shared during the retreat. As a structured approach to inculcate good learning habits and thinking dispositions so that BLGians can become self-directed learners, pupils have been regularly introduced and reminded of selected habits during assembly and pre-assembly periods since Term 2. Pupils will also learn more about HOM through games during the Learning Buffet in Term 2.

Miss Suhaila Bte Suleiman Syed and Mdm Lee Lin Fang(Teachers-in-Charge)

After undergoing the masterclass sessions, three pupils from Primary 5 and two pupils from Primary 4 participated in the Wits & Words competition. They had several practice sessions in school mostly on Saturdays and Thursdays, and even during the March holidays. During these practice sessions, the pupils shared their research findings on the motion and brainstormed on the main and supporting ideas and the points of rebuttal. They practised their prepared speeches with a timer to prepare for the actual competition.

Our pupils went through three rounds of competition, where they won the second round as the opposition. Although they were unable to follow through to the quarter-finals, they had shown resilience, persistence, teamwork and sportsmanship along the way. This experience would certainly be a stepping stone for them to do better in future debate competitions.

Mr Chew Chee Wai(Level Head / Mathematics)

To promote more pupils’ involvement in the learning of Mathematics, the Primary 4 level embarked on a new journey for their Mathematics lessons. The Maths Department aims to engage pupils in more hands-on activities through a project entitled “Curriculum Design”. Pupils learn Mathematics for the different topics through fun and engaging learning experiences.

BLGians Move It! (BMI!) is a health related activity introduced for two reasons.

To create a platform for mass exercise. • To infuse healthy eating habits. •

On this day, pupils and staff participate in a fun mass workout routine. After the workout, they get to eat fruits as a class in the canteen. BMI! aims to send the message among pupils and staff that regular exercise and healthy eating habits are essential to being not only physically but mentally healthy as well.

Mr Nicholas Cai Jinghao(Teacher-in-Charge)

In February 2014, Primary 3 pupils contributed to the community by raising awareness of water conservation. They visited Marina Barrage to learn more about the importance of water conservation. The pupils then synthesised knowledge they have acquired from the various subjects in school to reach out to their peers and parents.

Our Primary 5 pupils took part in their adventure camp, Camp Hi-5, in January. Pupils participated in activities that helped instil values and attributes like care, perseverance, teamwork and cooperation. The rugged activities helped to build courage which is necessary for pupils to face the future’s uncertainties and to become more adventurous. Through the various activities, the Hi-5 learning experiences were incorporated in this adventure camp. Pupils had a whole lot of fun learning the experiential way, which is out of the classroom and beyond the textbook.
