    Direct and indirect/reported speech

    Direct speech is when you write exactly what the person says/has said and you use speech marks.Direct speech: " I want an apple," said Fred. (First person present tense)

    Reported/indirect speech is when you report what someone has said but don't quote them.Reported/indirect speech: Fred said that he wanted an apple. (Third person past tense. Often uses the word that)

    Direct: "Do you want to play?" asked Emily.

    Reported/indirect: Emily asked me if/whether I wanted to play.

    Change the direct speech to reported speech:

    1. “Can I come and play?” asked Emily.

    2. “Is that really your car?” Gary enquired. 

    3. “Let’s all go to the park and play on the swings,” suggested Bob.

    Change the direct speech to reported speech:

    Mayan MarvelA 'snap‐happy' tourist has discovered a brand new Mayan city in Valencia. 

    On  Sunday 24th June at 5pm Mark Wrong, a tourist from France was happily taking pictures of the breath taking views of Venezuela when he spotted something odd  on his images.

    Mark had been staying in Valencia in Venezuela for a week with his wife, taking in the sights and exploring the beautiful scenery when he decided to go and explore a little further into the untouched surroundings. "I wanted to get my own pictures, I wanted to see some of the area that others hadn't seen. I wasn't expecting to make such a discovery." Mark told our reporter.

    What is a newspaper?

    There are two different kinds of national newspapers in the UK:

    Broadsheets: these are newspapers printed on large sheets of newspaper.

    Tabloids: these are printed on smaller sheets of newspaper.

    Newspaper headlines are designed to attract the reader’s attention.
