MESSAgES

Dear Word Up teamI have just read your 2nd edition of Wandsworth Word Up. What a great publication. Well done for the focus on the Atheldene Centre. I used the centre from 1978-83 plus being part of the League of Friends for 22 years. It is sad that the centre is closing as part of the cutbacks... In my spare time I run a small transport business with my brother. Could I advertise in your next editionRegards Richard

Hi to all at Word UpExcellent publication and very exciting. We at the Petchey Centre for Entrepreneurship at the University of East London wish you every success as you expand and develop. Which we have no doubt you will. All the best, Andre

Thanks to all those who emailed and posted on our blog!

Disability Employment

It is not easy finding a job. Some disabled people need support to ring up or go to a job centre for forms to be filled in.

Support workers, carers or member of staff can help with forms online or on the internet. It is better to explain clearly to people about employment or funding in finding full time or part-time work. It is also knowing who to ask for that kind of job, help and support. Many learning disability people go to Generate employment team. They support people in job search job club.

Can more businesses in Wandsworth help people with learning disabilities and special needs? You need to know your way around and some disabled people want to communicate or speak. People want to know how to get to different venues and buildings. About new places to work or earn money. There is a lot to learn.

COVER STORY - EMPLOYMENT

More jobs for people with learning disabilities. Everyone has the rightto have a job. People with learning disabilities are very good at their jobs. Disabled people like to work. Many people with learning disabilities or other disabilities are finding it very hard in Wandsworth to understand finance cut backs in government budget.

What if you are hard of hearing or you can’t hear what people are saying to you. How can you get help with what’s being said to you. Shops and businesses can go on training, about special needs of people with disabilities so they can understand them.

Big companies need to do more. Some people do not understand the national minimum wage, or what it means to get paid work. They also don’t know how to apply for different types of work experience or how to get and do an application, and how/who to ask for help.

Managers can be much more clear in talking about health and safety standards and different types of contracts in jobs or getting made redundant or losing their jobs. If you are earning you also need to tell the benefits agency before you start work, or you could go into benefit fraud or trouble by going to court or tribunal.

People now are afraid of losing their jobs. It’s hard to let people know why some people are losing their jobs.

COVER STORY - EMPLOYMENT

Did you know? In England, only 6.4 per cent of people with moderate to severe learning disabilities known to adult social services are in paid employment says the NHS Information Centre, August 2010. The employment rate for all disabled people is 47.4 per cent.

The EaglesOne night walking in the desert valley. Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Randy Meisner and Bernie Leadon a singers, songwriters and musicians. In late 1971 they saw eagles flying high overhead they took the name from the wild birds. Glenn Frey got the Eagles off the ground, he was the glue who held the band together.

In May 1971 Glenn Frey was in the Troubadour bar. He saw a young man standing alone at the bar counter

left after the Hotel California tour in 1977 and was replaced by Timothy B. Schmit they brought in a new member Don Felder in 1976 they were a five piece.

My favourite Eagles album is The Long Run released September 1979, the most moody and dark album of all and the last before their break up in 1982.

My favourite member is Don Henley. He had a highly successful solo recording career. He released only four albums from 1982-2000 the best one is The End Of The Innocence released June 1989. There’s a track called I Will Not Go Quietly,

drinking alone. Frey knew he was a drummer who was in a band called Shiloh.

He was the quiet, shy Don Henley with a mass of dark brown hair and piercing blue eyes, then fresh-faced, dark-haired boy with trusting eyes Randy Meisner, Bernie Leadon a bright-eyed, lean boy with curly hair each member came from different backgrounds. In 1975 Bernie Leadon left and was replaced by Joe Walsh then Randy Meisner

Axl Rose from Guns’N’ Roses is on backing vocals.

On 30 January 1989 at the American music awards Don Henley stepped in to drum for Guns’N’ Roses as their drummer, Steven Adler came down with the flu.

Having completed his third album, The End Of the Innocence, the song he drummed for was Patience, live on the dvd Guns ‘N’ Roses- Appetite For Destruction, the ultimate critical review.

The Eagles reformed in 1994, Frey, Henley, Felder, Walsh and Schmit on 25 April 1994. They gathered at the Warner Brothers Studio Sound stage in Burbank, California working on new songs. Their live album was cut down to four songs Love Will keep Us Alive, The Girl From Yesterday, Learn To Be Still And Get Over It.The album was released November 1994 called Hell Freezes Over with eleven greatest hits live in 1994 with four new studio tracks. The Eagles returned thirteen years later with a new studio album called Long Road Out Of Eden released 2007 with Frey, Henley, Walsh and Schmit. I work as a travel mate for a company called Hail. I started

to work there at the end of September and I really enjoy it.

My job is very important. I help people get around London, from the green buses on to the regular

buses. My Hobbies include wildlife, parakeets are my favourite birds,

reading, my favourite author is Ray Gordon, and films. I think Word Up

is an important newspaper because it gives people information about what’s going on and it is written in

a very readable language. Joe Wallace

Once a month we go to rehearsals. We meet upstairs in the training room of Odyssey Head Office from 4:30-7:30.

We arrive and have tea and orange and then we have song sheets. We all sing. Then we have dinner and go back to singing.

We meet together before the concert and take all the food over. We wear white Odyssey tee shirts. The children at Garratt Park

School have a choir and come sing with us.

This is my sixth concert. My sister is also in the choir. We are performing on 16th December 2010 at St. Andrews Church on

Garratt Lane 6:30-8:30pm. Everyone is welcome.

On the 14th of October 2010 as I was going to work on bus number 170 to Putney one woman started harassing me and she asked me to get off my seat.

She talked to her friend and both of them turned to me and told me to get off my seat. They said that if I did not get off my seat they would get me off the next stop.I just ignored them both and hoped that the harassment would stop.

The harassment did not stop and the lady got me by the neck of the coat I was wearing. A kind man tried to help me by coming in the middle of myself and the lady and he told them to leave me alone.

You should get off the bus he told them. This lady is doing no harm to anybody. Stop it right now. Leave her alone.

I just sat there calmly because I must have been in shock till I got to my stop and they got off the same stop as myself. The stop was Medfield Street and that was when I took the bus number and I noted down the time as well.

Even when the lady got hold of the skin on my neck and I screamed loudly, the bus driver took no notice at all. I was expecting the driver to do something about it. I ended up with a sore neck and a bruise on my arm. On my way back home later on, I went to two policemen who were standing at Clapham Junction. I told them what happened to me and they took down my details.

They asked me to report to any Police Station. That night I could not eat or sleep because what happened that morning kept on going through my mind. I eventually went to sleep very late.

The next day, I went to Wandsworth Police station and reported the matter. The police asked me all sorts of questions like where I was going, my name and they asked me if the bus driver did any-

thing about the issue at the time. An officer took me to a room and took a couple of pictures of my arm. They were very kind and they assured me that they would do something about the matter.

This affected me in many ways and I had to go to the victim support. I had to attend counselling for six weeks. I had to go every week because I lost confidence in myself. This affected my work, my relationship with people and I was afraid to get on the bus by myself.

I suffer from learning dis-abilities and I was diag-nosed with epilepsy when I was six months old.

I never ever will give up on my life. I hope that the women who harassed me were arrested. People like you and me do not have to go through this harassment.

HEALTH

At the Atheldene Centre we have group meetings of people with learning disabilities, and we do all

kinds of things. We talk and play games, and we also give out leaflets about healthy eating to people. For example on Monday the 15th November, we were talking about the importance of being healthy, dieting and eating healthy food, with activities that included sticking pictures on walls. Tinu and Hannah and Funmilayo are helping with the new group, and there are flyers about healthy eating which are available in the centre and on the internet, which you can download on your computer as an attachment.

We get support from Wandsworth Care Alliance, and people with disabilities can come to the Centre to contribute to the health page about healthy eating in the newspaper. We have also taken pictures of our meetings at the Atheldene Centre. There may be other people with learning disabilities in Wandsworth who find it difficult to understand what health means or what healthy eating means, or why it is important. They may not understand what’s good for them and what isn’t good for them, for example, too many calories and lots of sugar and fatty foods are not good for you at all, and can make you

put on too much weight. They are various types of disabilities, if they can’t speak or see, or are hard of hearing, then they can look at pictures and other ways to help them understand. Some people are scared to see their dietician, or to get the right help and support, by going to their GP for advice. If you find anyone who doesn’t understand about eating sensibly, then you can tell them about it, about how to eat the right amount of food and not junk food everyday as it is not really good for you. Eat fresh vegetables and up to five portions of fruit a day. You can also ask for help and support from Generate the Bridge or Share or Platform1 Café, as well as from family, carers, support workers and key workers.

COMMUNITY NEWS

www.DisabledGo.com is an award-winning website run by disability organisation DisabledGo. It has been in operation since 2000. DisabledGo is an established and trusted service, providing disabled people with the information needed to make informed choices about accessing their community.

DisabledGo-Wandsworth has been developed over the last 6 years. Thanks to an excellent partnership between DisabledGo and Wandsworth Borough Council.

The guide covers over 1000 venues in the area which have all been personally visited and kept up to date on an annual basis. The guide covers all types of venues from council buildings to tourist attractions and restaurants.

You can find out whether venues have, adapted toilets or parking close by but also specific details such as whether there are tactile or Braille markings in lifts or on doors, whether venues have audible announcers, dimensions of toilets or the positioning of fixtures and fittings.

Every year DisabledGo chairs a steering group in Wandsworth. Local disabled people and disability organisations have the opportunity to contribute to the guide.

DisabledGo – Wandsworth your website for access information!

Generate Advocacy Project (GAP) is a group of people with learning disabilities and supporters. GAP is open to any member who uses Generate. We help people to speak up and be more assertive about clubs, holidays, any staff or money issues and transport. GAP meets the second Monday of each month at Generate Summerstown, 6:30pm - 8:00pm.

GAP gets feedback from the directors or staff every few months. GAP wants more young people to join. If people want to join they should speak to Jane or James 020 879 5103 or email [email protected].

Thanks to Katy for her support and effort that she has given the group.

Generate Advocacy Project (GAP)

My name is Caroline and I work for Mencap as a Community Development Officer in southwest London. It is part of my job to help local groups like Word Up! speak up for the rights of people with a learning disability.

Mencap is worried about how the cuts by local councils will affect people with a learning disability. It is worried about the changes the government wants to make to benefits. Benefits are money you get like income support.

Here are some examples:- The mobility part of the DLA may be stopped for people who live in residential care homes. This would mean people will have less money to get out and do things.- There are new medical tests to get your DLA. Some people are not getting their money any more.

We think people with a learning disability should talk to their local MP and say what they think about the cuts and the changes to benefits. This will help your MP to understand what your benefits and services mean to you. It could help them try and stop cuts.

Mencap has an easy read booklet to help you fight the cuts in your area. It is called ‘Don’t Cut Us Out’. It is jam packed with advice. We also have an easy read leaflet about the changes to benefits.

If you want one of these or you need help campaigning you can call me on 078 1018 3552 or email me on [email protected].

Don’t Cut Us Out!

Discussing how best to promote DisabledGo-Wandsworth, changes in the area and new venues that should be added. This helps ensure the guide stays as up to date, useful and reliable as it possibly can be.

If you would like the opportunity to feedback or contribute to your local guide, you can join our local steering group or if you would like more information about DisabledGo.
