The Namibian Newspaper Cup was launched in 2001 and has very quickly become one of the

most exciting competitions on the local football calendar.

This annual tournament is contested by representative teams from the 14 regions of the country. It has rapidly developed into a mini Olympic tournament since the majority of the players are under 20 and qualify for the tournament. The past competitions in Windhoek, Otjiwarongo, Gobabis, Oshakati, Mariental, Walvis Bay, Keetmanshoop, Tsumeb and Outjo have lived up to expectations with a lot of ‘raw’ talent spotted at the tournament and recruited for the different national teams.

From 2003, the NFA started using a shadow team selected at the tournament for warm-up matches for the senior national side while some of the players from the shadow team were also selected to tour Germany.

In addition to being an exciting, crowd-pulling event on the annual soccer calendar in Namibia, The Namibian Newspaper Cup also has a strong social responsibility aspect. Around N$2 million goes into the economy of the host town through bookings for accommodation, sales of foodstuffs by shops and street vendors and other activities centred around the competition.

After the first tournament in his town then Gobabis mayor, Rehabeam Katjijova, recommended

other municipalities to approach the organisers with bids to host the annual tournament and for the last few years we have seen very impressive bids coming in from the Karas, Otjozondjupa, Oshikoto and Kunene Regions. So far the Newspaper Cup has exceeded expectations from towns such as Gobabis, Oshakati, Mariental, Keetmanshoop, Tsumeb and Outjo. Not taking full advantage of the tournament can only be to the detriment of the local business community.

Gwen Lister, former editor of The Namibian, says the tournament forms part of the company’s social responsibility policy, which includes support for the annual The Namibian/Model Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Classic and the Youthpaper, a weekly publication targeting the development of the country’s youth.

The tournament simultaneously promotes the development of women’s soccer with a match featuring two teams playing in a curtain raiser before the final.

The match between the Brave Warriors and the Shadow Team, which has become a feature of the tournament over the years, will not take place this year as the Ministry of Youth, National Service, Sport and Culture decided to lay more emphasis on the development of women’s football. As such, the national u20 women’s soccer team will play a mixed team consisting of players from Kavango West and Kavango East.

As usual the cup also offers several

incentive awards, such as the man of the match, top goalscorer of the tournament, goalkeeper of the tournament, match official of the tournament, player of the series and a fair play award (team).

The 2016 tournament will accommodate all 14 of Namibia’s regions, while there will be two groups of four teams and two groups of three teams that will play each other on a round robin basis.

The top teams in each group will qualify for the semifinals with the winners of Group A and B and the winners of Group C and D facing each other. The two semifinal winners will progress to the final.

The SponSorShip

Since its inception the sponsorship for the tournament has grown in leaps and bounds. In 2001, The Namibian newspaper presented a cheque of N$120 000 to the NFA for the inaugural tournament. The winning team (Omaheke) received N$10 000, a floating trophy and gold medals while the runners-up Otjozondjupa received N$6 000 and silver medals. Omusati won the losers’ section after beating Kavango in the final and collected N$2 000 while the latter got N$1 000.

In 2002, some N$160 000 was pumped into the tournament to make it bigger and better. Omaheke continued their fine form at the tournament and took the trophy again. They beat

Oshikoto in the final while Kavango won the losers’ section by beating Oshana in the final. Omaheke walked away with N$10 000 and Oshikoto with N$6 000. Kavango earned N$2 000 for their sweat while Oshana collected N$1 000.

Over the years the tournament expanded with more entertainment added to promote a festive mood throughout the four day soccer bonanza.

Supa Strika cartoonists working with kids, added to the atmosphere and were a popular addition. When the tournament went to the biggest support base of The Namibian newspaper (Oshakati) the attendance went up to 7 000 people (2004).

Mariental (2005), Keetmanshoop (2007 and 2012), Tsumeb (2014) and Outjo (2015) were some of the most exciting tournaments and the teams did not disappoint with great performances through the four days of pure football.

With the tournament having grown in leaps and bounds the sponsors will again pump more than N$1 million into the tournament this year.

The Ministry of Youth, National Service, Sport and Culture will once again sponsor the transport of the teams, which will be accommodated in various hostels in Rundu.

The Ministry has also instructed the Namibia Sport Commission to liaise between the sponsors and government departments like the Ministry of Works and Ministry of Education for the

renovation of the hostels and soccer field.

This year Nedbank Namibia came on board for the first time as an official sponsor with a significant sponsorship of N$500 000.

Another new sponsor is the Namibia Statistics Agency which has come on board with N$49 000 which will go towards the prize money.

The Namibian Broadcasting Corporation will be the official broadcasting partner and will cover the tournament live through their various radio stations, while NBC TV will provide a delayed broadcast.

Coca-Cola will once again be the official soft drink sponsor of the tournament with this year’s sponsorship amounting to N$60 000.

The overall winner’s prize remains at N$30 000 while the runner up will get N$20 000 and the semi-final losers N$16 000 each.

The team collecting the fair play award will receive N$3 000, while the player of the series, match official of the series, goalkeeper of the tournament and top goalscorer will each receive N$2 000 - an increase from N$1 000.

Each player of the match will receive N$500, while the women’s team winner will receive N$4 000 (increased from N$3 500) and the women’s loser N$3 000 (increased from N$2 700).

In total, the prize money has increased by N$10 000 and this year amounts to N$107 000.

‘Do you like soccer?’ I ask two pupils from the Revival Centre Christian Academy.

Before the question is answered, I should already know that the answer is yes. Justianus Kanyinga, a Grade 7 pupil promptly tells me that his favourite soccer player is Chelsea’s Eden Hazard. Princessa Marcelino who is in Grade 12 shares that although Lionel Messi is her favourite international player, Namibia’s own Petrus Shitembi reigns supreme in her books.

With the 16th edition of The Namibian Newspaper Cup coming to Rundu this year, Justianus, Princessa and the residents of Rundu cannot contain their excitement.

With a 63 341 population, Rundu is Namibia’s second most populated town after Windhoek. Agriculture, tourism and subsequently retail are the biggest industries of the area. With shopping centres and the new Rundu Mall rapidly growing, there are plenty of stores for those who are looking for some retail therapy.

Rundu’s informal markets are also a point of interest in the town, where one can buy everything from fresh produce and meat to getting a fresh cut at one of the barbers or a new set of clothes from one of the second-hand clothing vendors.

Sofia Haileka has been selling second hand clothing for almost 13 years. She and her colleagues travel down all the way to Cape Town every three months to acquire new stock. Similarly to how the market system works in Rundu, they negotiate and haggle for a price that suits them for a bag of clothes, and return back home with their newly acquired stock.

Catering mainly to residents who can’t afford to buy clothes from retailers and the business from those of nearby Angola, their businesses provide a service and help fill a gap in the clothing market and even for those who like thrift shop buying and second hand deals, one can walk away with a pair of vintage jeans or sweaters if you pour yourself over the piles of clothes.

The town is also developing at a fast rate with construction sites and trucks zipping across the town in building both residential and commercial centres and businesses. From luxury town

complexes to mass housing, the construction industry in Rundu is thriving, and the expansion and renovation of roads is on the agenda of the town council explains Romanus Haironga, the CEO of the Rundu Town Council.

The town is also building a new fire station to combat fires that have become a problem in informal settlements, while there are also talks of improving electrical and water infrastructures in the town.

Rundu beach, a popular sun-downing spot that overlooks the Okavango or Cubango river is also due for development with the hopes of creating a waterfront development.

Rundu is perhaps one of the greenest parts of the country, and boasts beautiful sunsets over the Okavango river. There are plenty of lodges by the riverside where one can view the area’s natural beauty with an ice cold drink and see Angola on the other side or take a cruise on the river.

With waters filled with fish, hippos and crocodiles, a swim is however definitely not advised. One of the lodge owners explained that

closer to the river’s edge there are only small crocodiles that tend to eat fish, but mind you, her understanding of small was crocodiles that measured two metres or less.

The town’s expansion also has an environmental impact on the local ecology and the council is trying to make it a priority to conserve the natural habitat. Where animals tend to move away from humans, for fear of being disturbed and killed, human beings seem to be ever encroaching onto their territory. With things like littering and people going into the river to collect sand to sell for construction, the delicate balance of the eco-system is often compromised which the council is working hard to preserve.

Whether you are looking for retail therapy, a little bit of nature, a visit to the nearby Mbunza Living Museum which gives visitors an insight into traditional Kavango culture, or buy some wood-carved curios from craftsmen, Rundu is ready to open its hospitable doors to Namibia for the upcoming The Namibian Newspaper Cup, and it would be a shame to miss it.

At some point or other you might find yourself stuck in a car that has just broken down. Being your

first time to Kavango East and a little after dark you might not know who to call or where to turn to in your predicament. A call to Oruzuvo Automative and General Engineering is all you need to get you out of your motor troubles.

Started by Iden Pangeti, who too found himself stuck in a broken down car on a late Saturday afternoon, he decided to start his business in the hope of helping other motorists like him in the area.

With nobody else catering for the people of Rundu and the surrounding area’s motor-engineering related difficulties, he saw a business opportunity and has not look back since.

“If something broke down one would have to send your parts down to Windhoek, which would leave people stranded,” he explained.

Oruzuvo Automative and General Engineering provides employment for 28 people which includes mechanics, engineers, and general office and admin staff. His business has had the chance to expand and has branches in Katima Mulilo, Grootfontein and the main branch at Rundu.

They specialise in EAG engine reconditioning, crankshaft grinding, cylinder head overhaul and block, to reboring as well as providing motor spare parts.

Walking through the garage, he points out all the different machinery he has to cater to everyone’s needs from a crank grinder to a lathe machine.

In a time when people tend to buy new parts instead of fixing it, Oruzuvo Automative and General Engineering is the most cost effective option. Where a new engine part could cost you around N$3 000, Pangeti would be able to recondition it for a fraction of the price at around N$700.

But beyond providing a great service to the people of Rundu, one can tell that he really enjoys his job, and with a wide range of clients coming from all corners of the region and business booming, it is easy to understand why.

RUNDU’s Omashare Lodge probably has one of the best guest receptions in the

country. In other lodges you might be greeted by friendly and attentive staff, but at Omashare, the first to greet you are the lodge’s wild peacocks.

Trotting around looking for something to eat, with their young following closely behind them, the peacocks blend in perfectly with the already colourful Omashare Lodge with its manicured lawns, swimming pool and water features.

Walking past the reception area, through the lounge and then outside to the lapa, one has a breathtaking view of the Okavango River, and is greeted by the calm and solitude of nature.

Omashare Lodge the Oasis of Rundu

With 20 ensuite bedrooms that overlook the stunning garden, each guest is bound to feel right at home.

It boasts a restaurant and bar which both guests and day visitors can enjoy and having a meal in the cool gardens around sunset is a must. With a blend of Rundu and nearby Portuguese cuisines to choose from the menu, I opted for a flame-grilled quarter chicken that came with side salad and chips. When it arrived, it looked more like a half if not whole chicken, which had me both greedy with excitement and anxious about how I was going to be able to eat the sumptuous meal. You won’t hear me complaining about their portions though, because whether or not the chickens in Rundu are just much larger than anywhere else in the country, or Omashare

Lodge is just generous with their food, nobody can fault them when it comes to making sure that their guests are well fed.

One can relax in the lounge, have a nice cold drink at their bar, or partake in some gambling in their ‘Backstage area’ which sometimes has a DJ for dance nights. The garden features a sparkling pool and a bird house that features a lot of exotic birds.

They also boast air-conditioned, free Wifi, and have conferencing facilities that can accommodate up to 55 people.

A family affair run by father and son, Filinto and Mauro Rosa, Omashare Lodge has been catering to its guests for 16 years and they are hoping to expand the lodge by adding ten more rooms. Currently employing 48 permanent staff, Omashare not only provides hospitality for visitors but a stable source of income for its employees.

During your stay you also have the option of going for a river cruise down the Okavango which is a popular spot for anglers.

If you are heading to Rundu for The Namibian Newspaper Cup, the Omashare Lodge is a sure place to stay with friendly staff, great food and a quiet place to rest after a long day.

Rooms are available at N$780 per night for single rooms and N$1 045 for a double.

You can contact them on Phone: +264 (66) 266600; Fax: +264 (66) 256111; or email: [email protected] to make a booking.

ü2001 - Windhoekomaheke 3 otjozondjupa 1

Omaheke won the inaugural The Namibian Newspaper Cup after beating Otjozondjupa 3-1 in front of an ecstatic crowd at Windhoek’s Independence Stadium.

Omaheke captain Arnold Hoaseb put them ahead after only nine minutes but Otjozondjupa missed a great chance to equalise when Erastus Gariseb’s shot hit the crossbar.

Omaheke’s Brave Warriors duo of Mogale Naruseb and Maleagi Ngarizemo came on as second half substitutes and Naruseb immediately made an impact, scoring two goals in three minutes, with the second coming from the penalty spot.

In the final stages, Otjozondjupa won a penalty and Paul Nugurib scored from the spot but it was too little too late as Omaheke clinched the title.

Playing in front of their home crowd, Hardap did most of the attacking in the first half through Ettienne Beukes and Patrick Jagger but Otjozondjupa defenders Da Costa Angula and Steven Goaxab kept them at bay.

Severus gave Otjozondjuopa the lead when he intercepted a poor clearance and hit the back of the net with a powerful shot.

Substitute Helmut Rugam came off the bench to score the only goal of the 2013 final at the Paresis Stadium at Otjiwarongo, as the hosts Otjozondjupa beat Omaheke 1-0.

After a goalless first half, Otjozondjupa coach John Sikerete brought on Romario Maans and Helmut Rugam to good effect.

Maans’ long pass to the right wing was crossed back into the box by the speedy winger Barnard Horaseb and was headed in at the near post by Rugam to send the capacity crowd into raptures.

In the semifinals, Omaheke beat Erongo 2-1, while Otjozondjupa beat Khomas 2-0.

ü2014 - Tsumeb Kavango 2 oshana 1

The match went into extra time and although Oshikoto were reduced to nine men after having two players sent off for fouls, they did most of the attacking but could not score.

The match had to be decided on penalties and Oshikoto seemed to be heading for the title when they took a 3-1 lead. They however missed two penalty attempts, allowing Omusati to come back and grab the title after a dramatic 4-3 penalty shoot out win.

In the semifinals, Omusati beat Kavango East 2-1 and Oshikoto beat Oshana 4-3 on penalties after the teams were tied 3-all at the end of normal time. Kavango East beat Oshana 3-2 to win the third place play-off.

Kavango made history in 2014 when they won The Namibian Newspaper Cup for the first

time, but since then the region has been split in two - Kavango East and Kavango West, with the result that it will be much more difficult for either team to win the title this year.

Coach Isa Saibi said they had lost most of last year’s squad and had to start building from scratch.

“It’s going to be tough. We had to start from scratch and most of the players are not there anymore. We also had a

problem since many of our u17’s who played in the Scorpion Zinc Cup don’t have their registration documents so they cannot participate. But I’ve assembled a good side that will be able to compete,” he said.

According to Saibi, some of their outstanding players include attacking midfielder Ruben Sikotongo, striker Moses Muhepa and their experienced goalkeeper Frans Sakamba.

“We are aiming to reach the final. We are not going to Rundu to participate,” Saibi said.

The Zambezi Region has a poor record at The Namibian Newspaper Cup and has never

reached the finals of the tournament. Last year they failed to reach the

knockout stages after finishing bottom of Group D and this year they will once again find the going tough in Group A along with Kunene, Omaheke and Kavango West.

Coach Simanga Simanga, however, said they are well prepared and looking forward to this year’s tournament.

“We started training early and I must say the team is looking good. We have a completely new look squad and none

of our players have remained from last year. We have a young team with a lot of talent and I hope to reach at least the semifinals,” he said.

Some of their top players include defender Evans Kufwanga, midfielder Shaun Siyoka and striker Morris Chelezo.

Simanga said their preparations were hampered by logistical problems.

“Our preparations have been hampered because we have a lot of boys from different constituencies so it was difficult to get them all together,” he said.

“It’s not going to be easy but we will do our best. Only God knows how far we will go,” he added.

Omaheke are the second most successful region in the history of The Namibian Newspaper Cup,

having won the title on three occasions and finishing second once.

They also have numerous players who have gone on to represent the Brave Warriors through the years, including Hartman Toromba, Pekaara Kaaheke, Moses Katjiteo, Mogale Naruseb, Maleagi Ngarizemo, Erastus Ndjavera, Roger Katjiteo and Max Mbaeva.

Their most recent success came in 2013 when they reached the final, only to lose 1-0 to Otjozondjupa, and assistant coach

Theobalt Kahuure believes this year’s squad can go one further.

“We haven’t won for a long time but this time around I can assure you that we will win the tournament,” he said.

“We still have five players from last year’s squad, while most of the boys have played in our u17 team at the Scorpion Zinc Cup,” he added.

Some of Omaheke’s top players include striker Augustinus Hobechab, who was the player of the tournament and top goal scorer at the last year’s u17 Scorpion Zinc Cup; and midfielders Ricardo Jassie and McDonald Gariseb.

Group A:Zambezi, Kunene, Omaheke, Kavango West

Kunene also have a poor record in The Namibian Newspaper Cup and have never reached

the semifinals, let alone the final, of the tournament.

Despite this they have produced some outstanding players over the years like Jacques Uwukhaeb, who was the joint top goalscorer in 2012 and Theodor Gaeseb who was the goalie of the tournament in 2014.

Last year they failed to reach the knockout stages after finishing bottom of Group C, but coach Arnold ‘Quiz’ Gaoseb believes that they will go far this year.

“We selected our squad and went into

camp well in time and are ready for the tournament,” he said.

Their squad includes five players from last year’s squad but most of the players are newcomers.

Some of their top players include central defender Given Mathuzue who captained the team last year, striker Queensly Soroseb, defensive midfielder Tet Shitima and playmaker Rodrick Hoakhaob.

Another exciting talent to look out for is wing attacker Clarence Gaoseb.

“We are the underdogs but we are ready and will spring a surprise or two,” Gaoseb said.

Khomas are the most successful team in the history of The Namibian Newspaper Cup,

having won the title on four occasions while finishing as runners-up three times.

Khomas have delivered some great players over the years who have gone on to play for the Brave Warriors like Jerome Louis, Edward Asino, Letu Shatimuene, Lazarus Kaimbi, Sadney Urikhob, Emilio Martin and Eslin Kamuhanga.

This year however a lot of their national u17 and 20 players who are in camp with the national squads, are not available and coach Christi Guruseb admitted it was a setback.

“They are in camp for international matches coming up, so they are not available and that will be a big loss. But Khomas is a big region and we can do it,” he said.

Their preparations have gone well and they played two friendlies, beating Groot Aub 4-0 and drawing 2-2 against Kom Haal Hulle, which is currently leading the Omaheke second division.

Some of their outstanding players to look out for include captain and attacking midfielder Givone Boois, who is Brave Warriors legend Lolo Goraseb’s son; midfielders Shane van Wyk and McMorris Gariseb; and striker Milton Both.

Otjozondjupa are the third most successful team in the history of The Namibian Newspaper Cup,

having won the title twice and finishing second once.

They have performed very well in recent years, winning the title in 2013 and finishing fourth in 2014, but last year they failed to reach the knockout stages, finishing second in their group behind eventual champions Omusati.

Otjozondjupa’s head of delegation Martin Tsaoseb, however, said he was confident that they would do well this time around.

“We had trials in Otjiwarongo with more than 800 boys and we have selected a strong squad. We have quite a few players left from last year and about 15

players from our u17 squad in the side, so we have a good mixture of youth and experience,” he said.

Otjozondjupa have been drawn in a tough group along with Khomas, Hardap and Omusati, but Tsaoseb said he was confident of doing well.

“We know them well so we know how to prepare for them and I’m confident that we can reach the final,” he said.

Some of their top players include midfielder Luciano Nauseb, who is a cousin of former Brave Warriors midfielder Robert Nauseb; attacking midfielder Romario Hawiseb; and left wing Willem Kamesiepo, the brother of Orlando Pirates winger Stanley Kamesiepo.

Omusati made history last year when they won The Namibian Newspaper Cup for the first time.

Coach Shipena Nakalondo however admitted it would be difficult to emulate last year’s performance.

“We don’t have such a strong squad as last year when we won the cup in Outjo. We only have three players remaining from last year’s squad, while the rest are newcomers,” he said.

“Most of the players are still young with six players having played in our u17 Scorpion Zinc team last year,” he added.

Their hopes will be pinned on their

star striker Daniel Kamanya who was the top scorer as well as the Player of the Tournament last year.

Other players to look out for include their defensive midfielder Adan Mwatukange and their goalie Johannes Kapweya.

Omusati are in a tough group alongside Khomas, Otjozondjupa and Hardap and with a young team will struggle to make the knockout stages but Nakalondo remained optimistic.

“We are in a tough group so it’s going to be difficult but we’ll try our best, he said.

Hardap’s golden years in The Namibian Newspaper Cup came a decade ago when they finished

runners-up in 2004 and 2005 and then went one better to win the title in 2006. Since then, however, they have had little success, and Hardap administrator Ricky Brinkman was not very confident that things will go better this year.

“To be honest the team’s preparation has not been good and we are not getting enough support. The business people from Hardap mostly support rugby or cricket so the only support we are getting is from

the local and regional councils but we are still waiting for their funds to get proper preparation for the team,” he said.

According to Brinkman their squad includes about 10 players from last year with some of their best players including their national u20 striker Brandon Kutongondo; and left wing Ellis Brinkman and midfielder Johannes Jeremias, who both made the Namibia Newspaper Cup team last year.

“We’ll do our best. We aim to reach at least the quarterfinals and from there anything can happen,” Brinkman said.

Oshana have a good record in The Namibian Newspaper Cup competition, having won the

tournament in 2007 and finishing as the runners-up in 2003, 2012 and 2014.

They have produced some outstanding players over the years, none more so than current Brave Warriors defender Willem Mwedihanga, who captained their 2007 trophy winning team, while they have also produced numerous goal scorers of the tournament, like Carlos Perny in 2001, Simon Pieters (2002), Estevao Shooya (2005), Marius Martin (2006) and Haidula Fares (2011).

This year they have a young and

inexperienced squad with only five players remaining from last year’s squad, but coach Alexander Itumba was confident that they would do well.

“We started training early and I must say the team is looking good. We have a new look squad and only our goalie has remained from last year. We have a young team and hope to reach at least the semifinals - there is a lot of talent there,” he said.

Some of their top players to look out for include their holding midfielder Pandeni Kandjabanga; Collin Amukwaya, who can play left back or left wing; and Israel Shikongo, a striker or attacking midfielder.

Oshikoto haven’t won The Namibian Newspaper Cup yet but have twice finished as runners-up and will

fancy their chances of winning the trophy this year.

Their runners-up medals came in 2002 and last year, when they were quite unlucky to lose the final going down on penalties to Omusati after throwing away a 3-1 lead in the shootout.

Some of their top players over the years include Brave Warriors strikers Alfred Ndyenge and Viv Heibeb, while Desmond Kharigub won the top goal-scorer award last year.

Their coach Elias ‘Energy’ Usizi said their preparations were going according to

plan. “The preparation has gone well and

according to plan. We have selected quality players and held numerous trials in places like Tsumeb and Oluno,” he said.

Oshikoto have an experienced squad with seven players remaining from last year.

Some of their top players include national u20 defender Tsandi Baloyi, central midfielder Oppes Hangara, and striker Ronaldo Gaoab who was the man of the match in last year’s final.

“Last year we mainly depended on our striker but now we have a lot of good u17 players coming through and all the positions covered,” Usizi said.

Erongo region have won The Namibian Newspaper Cup only once before - in 2012 when they

beat Oshana 2-0 in the final. They have produced some excellent

players over the years including Brave Warriors defenders Gotlieb Nakuta and Wycliff Kambonde; Reinhold Andimba and Bernardus Nowaseb who were the top goal scorers in 2003 and 2004 respectively; and Mapenzi Muwanei, who was the top goalscorer and player of the tournament in 2012.

Last year they struggled, finishing last in Group B, but the chairman of the Erongo region Charles Muukwa was confident that they will do well this year.

“We want to win the tournament. We had regional trials and then the boys will

go into camp. They will be very busy and have got matches lined up against Blue Waters and Eleven Arrows.

“Our new executive committee is very ambitious and we will also bid to host the tournament next year,” he said.

Some of their star players include the Humphries brothers Delleon and Nampies, who play for Blue Waters; goalie Donovan Gaenub who plays for Tura Magic; and Eleven Arrows striker Rivaldo Festus.

Others to look out for include midfielders Philip Kavari and Archie Shatumba.

“Our governor wants The Namibian Newspaper Cup to come to Erongo next year so if our team does well it will help us attract sponsors,” he said.

Ohangwena have not been very successful in The Namibian Newspaper Cup with their only

achievement of note coming in 2010 when they finished as runners-up in the tournament.

The following year their striker Ismael Asser was a joint-winner of the top goal-scorer award but that was the only noteworthy award they won in the Namibian Newspaper Cup.

This year they, however, have an experienced squad and coach Linnox Kanyeha is confident of doing better than last year when they lost all their group matches.

“We started preparing two weeks ago

and have already played some friendly matches. We have eight players left from last year so the squad is quite experienced,” he said.

Some of their top players include their captain and striker Peter Hamunyela, and midfielders Mbali Hangula, Paulus Immanuel and Mathias Shikongo.

Ohangwena will be competing in Group D against Karas and the hosts Kavango East, whom Kanyeha reckons will start as the favourites.

“Kavango East are former champions and will have home ground advantage. But we’ll be well prepared and we have the confidence and belief that we can go far this year,” he said.

Karas have twice finished as runners-up in The Namibian Newspaper Cup in 2006 and 2011 and have produced

some great players over the years who have gone on to make their mark at international level.

Willy Stephanus and Virgil Vries are their most famous exports while others like Klaas Blom, Frans de Muinda, Eusebio Fredericks, Ashley Jossob and Warren Pofadder have shone in the NPL. Pofadder was also the joint top goal-scorer of The Namibian Newspaper Cup in 2012.

According to their team manager Kallie Goliath they are well prepared this year and looking forward to a great run.

“We are well prepared and the other regions will definitely be in for a surprise.

We have received support from our stakeholders like the business community and the regional council and constituency so I’m very excited about the tournament,” he said.

“We still have a few players from last years squad and will be relying heavily on them. We are aiming for the final and nothing less. At the final you will see the great Karas region celebrating,” he added.

Some of their top players include their playmaker midfielder Llewellyn Pofadder, midfielder Kuwara Stefanus and defender Mitchell Mettler.

Kavango East will host The Namibian newspaper Cup for the first time this year and according

to team manager Jerry Hausiku, the region is determined to make it a big success.

“Everyone in the community is very happy. It is the first time that we have submitted a bid since 2005 so finally the tournament is coming to Rundu.

We are really looking forward to hosting all the regions and whoever will like to come to Rundu for the Easter holiday,” he said.

Hausiku said they had an experienced squad and were hoping to do well on home soil.

“We have one of the most experienced squads and will retain about 80 percent of our players from last year. In 2015 we came third so I think we can go all the way and win the cup this year,” he said.

Some of their top players to look out for include midfielder Jackson Anyemba, goalkeeper George Mukwaya, holding midfielder Jessy Nanyemba, midfielder Petrus Patrick and defender Chihinga Haingura.

Hausiku said the home ground support would help the team a lot.

“We will get fantastic support from the Rundu people - the stadium is always packed and there won’t be place for a mouse,” he said.

Walking into Micke du Preez’s office it becomes quite clear that he is a man who believes

in making his own luck and motivation. With posters of affirmations, mantras and prayers plastered behind his chair, you can tell where he gets his outlook on life from, and the words that drive his business to be the success that it is.

Opened in June 2014, Du Preez Petroleum Station has continued to grow

and expand each year. With a King Pie, a Bonjour Café, a Debonairs, a Steers, a carwash, a filling station, and Europcar car rental franchise, it employs 100 people and provides the people of Rundu and those who are passing through with immaculate service.

And he isn’t stopping there, with a steak house restaurant opening soon, while he plans to add a second story to the building which will house a 24/7 butchery and bakery for those who want to be able to buy meat and bread

for midnight braai cravings. A nail salon is also in the works for ladies and gentleman who can’t go without a mani-pedi. There are also plans to add an extra filling island so that they can cater for more customers.

Du Preez Petroleum will also open a branch in Divundu which is approximately 200km from Rundu.

Currently the station is stocked with four filling islands, one of which caters for large trucks. Their bathroom facilities also have baby changing rooms which is

accessible to both mothers and fathers. When asked what made him open his

business and continue to expand it each year, Micke du Preez explained that he wanted to give the people of Rundu a little bit of a taste of Windhoek closer to home, with all the amenities and services that they could need.

And with the The Namibian Newspaper Cup, those from Rundu and yonder can definitely look forward to the dedicated service and attention to detail that Du Preez Petroleum provides.

The Chairperson, Commissioners and Secretariat of the Namibia Sports Commission wishes its stakeholders and the nation at large a happy 26 Independence day celebrations.

At the same time we wish all the best of luck for all the 16 regional teams that will becompeting at the 16th edition of the Namibian Newspaper Cup in the Kavango East Regionin Rundu during the Easter weekend.

May the spirit of fair play prevail during this historic event.
