THE THIRD WEEK OF SURGERY!

And again it was an enormous success! Wow, this truly was another super week!

Anugrah (CP, cerebral palsy) has been treated with a hamstring release and an Achilles

heel extension. Gede no has two straight feet and Komang had both a hamstring release

and a club foot correction. Also Mangku was present again! His left foot has now been

treated as good a possible. Again thanks to Dr Huub van de Heide and Dr Mirjam de

Haart, thank you both for this marvelous week! Also thanks to the hospital Kerta Usada,

Sylvie, Bu Meri and Dr Wayan and the whole surgery team! And of course also our own

great team!

RELEASE FROM HOSPITAL

AFTER THREE DAYS

Three nights in hospital. Again we could

use the beautiful room like the first time.

There are six beds for four children and

there is enough space for the parents to

stay the night. Komang had a hard time. He was feeling sick for a long time

and threw up a lot. Fortunately this turned better when he moved to the So-

Kos. Mangku immediately sat up straight and was ready to be released!

SO-OK WEEK 3

OK KIDS BACK HOME

Angga was the first one to return home. After more than three months in our So-Kos Angga was able to walk well enough to

rehabilitate further at home. Every other week he will be checked at High 5. He is doing very well! He was the next to go home.

Arlan wasn't able to walk yet when he first arrived at the Centre and because of his mental problems we expected a long running

project. But during the Balinese New Year Arlan made his first steps all by himself. So proud!! Arlan was collected by his entire

family a week later! Mangku also went home but he still is working on his rehabilitation programme. Mangku needed another

surgery on his left foot and this surgery has now been done during the SO-OK Week 3!

Dr Huub is ready to go! Dr Mirjam takes care of

all the pictures and videos

I don't want to miss a

thing!

And again there is this fabulous hospital

team!

FLOOR EXERCISES

In front of the door of their

So-Kos room where the

children are staying till they

are able to walk. This pic-

ture was taken two days

after their release from hos-

pital.

FIRST STEPS

Mangku walking with

crutches and Komang with a

walking frame. Kadek Te is

now their therapist as Kadek

Sudi is on maternity leave.

EXAMS IN THE KOS

A teacher of Anugrah and

Komang arrived from the

south to the Foundation to

take the final exams. It

would be a shame if the

children would have to dou-

ble a year just because of

the surgery. Fortunately the

schools were prepared to

help and both Komang and

Anugrah have passed!

CLEAN-UP!

For Mangku this period

went very smoothly. He is

using the experience he has

gained during the SO-OK

Week 2 and he clearly en-

joys himself in the So-Kos.

He practices seriously and

already by now he walks

very well. He even mops the

floor! Another two weeks

and his cast will be taken

off. Most probably Mangku

can then go straight home!

THE FOUNDATION

ORTHOPEDIC SHOES

From Mirjam de Haart we received a lot of orthopedic

shoes! All the children who had surgery and had a club foot

correction have received a pair. They can wear these shoes

to school! The shoes are very beautiful and the children are

very glad!

EXAMINATIONS AND NEW OK-KIDS!

During the third SO-OK week several children from all

over Bali arrived hoping to hear that surgery could change

their lives. About 20 children have been examined by Huub,

Mirjam and Marieke. We have selected four children who

will take part in the fourth SO-OK week!

Unfortunately it wasn't just good news during these exami-

nations. Children over 10 years old with club feet can often

not be treated. The feet can be so misshapen and the bones

in the feet can be entirely deformed so that surgery here in

Bali, with the tools we have here, is not possible.

Nih Putu (1st picture left) is a three year old girl with 1 club

foot right. Her father suffers from two untreated club feet

and is able to walk with them but he wants to spare his little

daughter the misery he suffered. Nih Putu will be treated in

the SO-OK week 4 with a club foot correction.

Kadek Sukreni (2nd picture) has bow legs. Also Kadek will

have surgery in the 4th SO-OK week. Ketut (3rd picture)

unfortunately cannot be treated by us, because of the severe

misshapenness of his feet.

Komang had surgery in Australia thanks to Ken and Chris; Agus

and Aldi are from the SO-OK week 1 and Angga is from the SO-

OK week 2.

KETUT

Now physically totally independ-

ent!

Ketut goes to school and has good

grades. He loves to play soccer and

he's a happy kid. A great example

to show the goals of High 5 Rehab!

Dear Ketut, we are so proud of you!

The Queen's Birthday 2011

Kees and I have been to Bali for two weeks to visit our daughter Kim who is studying there for half a year. On April 22 we ar-

rived and on April 23 Mirjam de Haart, who is rehabilitation doctor in the LUMC hospital, and Huub van der Heide, orthopedic

surgeon at the LUMC, were leaving. They had in the previous week performed surgery on for children for the Foundation High

5, performing club feet corrections. Huub and Mirjam go to Bali twice a year to do surgery for children on behalf of the founda-

tion. They can treat four children at a time since at the rehab centre there are four rooms where the children can stay for six

weeks under the care of an attendant. Just before they left we met and then Mirjam asked us whether we wanted to visit the re-

hab centre So of the Foundation High 5 Rehab. Half a year ago they had done surgery on Ayu, a 22 year old woman, who due to

the good physiotherapy and her own dedication is improving well but since a few orthoses are still lacking Mirjam asked if Kees

could maybe help her further.

On our Queen's birthday we left from Kuta to Lovina. Kees was wearing an orange shirt and I was wearing an orange top since

we are Dutch and also orange is a color in our logo. The distance is only 100 km but there is no highway so it took us nearly 3

hours through the mountains! We were received warmly by Marieke, a Dutch physiotherapist who has founded this rehab centre

in 2003.

She gave us a tour of the premises first, we met the four children who had surgery and who stay at the foundation for six weeks

so they can recover in a clean environment preventing infections. After that Kees examined Ayu, he made a walk a bit and then

he took two gypsum casts.

Huub and Mirjam had told us about the foundation with so much

spirit and enthusiasm and they said they gained so much energy

from working there for one week with the children. We could now

imagine this, we were deeply impressed and already from the two

hours there we gained energy! It was surely worth the six hours

drive.

Now we carefully consider if we can be help by making orthoses

on Bali.

It has been a not so ordinary Queens Birthday but with a bright

orange sun!

SHOP BACK

AT HIGH 5

A minor reconstruction.

The first two rooms of the first

building have been joined. The

new space is now spacious

enough to turn it into a nice

shop. Number six of the ther-

apy is still working hard on

the fine hand coordination and

so there are still new beautiful

bracelets and necklaces being

made, as well as cute key rings

and much more!

MEETING AT YAKKUM

High5 wants to cooperate better with YYS Yak-

kum. Yakkum is specialized in the manufacture of

orthoses and braces.

Yakkum has its tool shop in Denpasar. High 5

would like Yakkum to open a second location at

High 5 so that children at High 5 have easy access

to purchase good othoses. The meeting at Yakkum

Bali was together with Mr. Ger Kamer who is an

orthopedic instrument maker in the Netherlands.

Ger has given Yakkum some instructions on how to

produce orthoses of even better quality.

Thanks to Ger fKamer and his instructions and I

will keep you informed about our cooperation with

Yakkum!

SPONSORS AND DONATORS

“GLOBE RUNNER”

A very special initiative by 'Globe Runner' Henk

Harenberg. Coming fall Henk will come to Bali to run

521 kilometres in about 11 days! This is something we,

and probably many others, wouldn't want to consider

doing. Henk has stressed from the start that the focus

should not be on him or on his sportive challenge but

on the children whom he aims to sponsor with this run.

During the last few months Henk hasn't been quiet so

that the sponsor project starts rolling. We are very curi-

ous to see how this will evolve and we are of course

very glad with this very special initiative. If there are

people with good suggestions for Henk or if you want

to help sponsor him, contact him at henkriverof-

[email protected] In our coming newsletter of course

more about our 'Globe Runner'!

LIONSCLUB HOORN VELIUS

Already a long time Lionsclub Hoorn Velius sponsors High5 by selling necklaces. Also last Whit-

sun the Lionsclub was on the road to work for High 5. On behalf of the High 5 children: thanks so

much for your efforts in the last months!

COLLEGE INHOLLAND

At the College INHolland a group of second year students supervised by Gigi Loman have been working hard, This group,

called the NewB Team, took on High5Rehab as a project focus and worked on more 'brand awareness' for the foundation by

means of special promotional events. Part of their project was the organization of an event "By the youth for the youth'. This

evolved in the Pre-queens Fair held on April 28. It was a super party where the students sold Indonesian snacks, there was a lot-

tery, music and much more. The students managed to raise a great amount for High 5, enough to pay surgery for two children.

The NewB Team hasn't retired yet because still more events will follow for the benefit of the foundation! On behalf of all chil-

dren, High 5 thanks you all for all your great dedication in the last year! Hopefully we can soon write more about the

'advertainment' of the NewB Team!

KEES SMETSERS From our previous News-

letter you might remem-

ber Kees Smetsers. Kees

has written a beautiful

book about Bali in which

a whole chapter has been

dedicated to the Founda-

tion. Also the profits of

the sales of the book

Kees will donate to High

5 Rehab! From Kees we

have already received

wonderful donations

which we obviously can

use very well. To Kees

and all the readers of his

book "Travels through

the real Bali" (Reizen

door het echte Bali):

again many thanks for

your contributions.

DRESSES AND SILVER

We hope by selling batik and Silver

we can support the foundation our

selves a little. It would be great that

the foundation in the future can give

jobs to the pore and handicapped, and

also if the foundation is able to sup-

port it selves. We now start small, but

who knows in the future? We keep

you updated!

Thank you very much Tom and

Yvonne and village Vught, for the

great donations!!

MARIKEN RUN 2011

On Sunday May 15 there was another Mariken run, which is a

race in Nijmegen. For the sixth time in a row we used this event

to find sponsors for the Foundation. By asking for contributions

form relatives, friends, acquaintances and the firm WEB-IQ we

managed to gather a very nice sum!! Also colleagues of Irene

(who works at the Dutch Obesitas Clinic) and Annelein (who

works at the Sint Maartens Clinic) have contributed enormously

this year. So much thanks for that!

Every year we enjoy seeing so many people getting enthusiastic

about the foundation High5Rehab and that the Foundation be-

comes widely known. We wish to thank everyone kindly for all

the donations we received.

Also next year we will apply ourselves for High5Rehab! Re-

gards from Irene and Annelein

THE SUPER DUPER EVENT OF THE

YEAR! THANKS TO THE CIRKEL!!!

HE, COME ON, WE RUN TOGETHER FOR

HIGH 5!

Elementary school The Cirkel in Amstelveen organized a fabu-

lous event for High 5. All the children at The Cirkel joined in a

great sponsored run, where each class had its own goal in the

number of rounds around the school had to be made. Before the

start they all sang a song that had been written especially for this

vent. Kirsten Schneider, the writer of the song, san along with the

children in a marvelous live performance. It was a very hot day

but that couldn't stop the children from running till they gathered

all their stamps. Ending the event, the school organized a special

evening during which all parents could enjoy delicious Indone-

sian dishes. Also there was a large auction where pieces of art

were sold that had been made in the classrooms, and also day

trips were auctioned like a day to the zoo with one of the teach-

ers. School The Cirkel, thanks for all your efforts! Thanks to you

we can now buy new school materials and redecorate the court-

yard and even more! Terima kasih!

DONATION WERELDWINKEL

The Wereldwinkel is the Third World Imports and Informa-

tion Centre. Through Ellen Matthaei, who works at the

Wereldwinkel in Abcoude, we received a marvelous dona-

tion. Great! Thanks so much! We can now make the swim-

ming pool safer and also help some more children with

Physiotherapy.

THE SUPER DUPER EVENT OF THE YEAR! THANKS TO THE CIRKEL!!!

Page 8: Newspaper Foundation High 5 Rehab

On behalf of the entire High 5 Rehab team:

Time passes so quickly and our Foundation moves so fast! Every time when I

write this Newsletter I feel so proud as a member of the board for all the sponsors

and supporters who show much trust in our foundation. Every time I spend time

explaining that we prefer to spend the funds directly on Bali and that we do not

want to print any shirts or leaflets and each time I meet understanding. So many

thanks for this, because I realize that it could be easier sometimes to send off some

T-shirts or a ready-to-go collecting-box. But we do want to stress that the focus

should be where it has been in the last years: at the children on Bali. Despite the

fact that over 400 children have been treated by us, that we run a school, have sur-

geries done, run a tools shop and an art shop and so on, w still keep expanding and

we still want to take care that overhead does expand. This is why we want to thank

you in this Newsletter for your understanding and patience. Last year we have

been able to realize various large projects and this year we intend to slow down so

that these projects can be followed though carefully. Of course this will turn out to

be difficult since there are some many more new ideas and wishes and plans for

the future! But it is surely important to focus our attention to steady income. Fi-

nally I would like to stress that with your help we have been able to achieve fabu-

lous things and we also need your help to keep these projects running. This conti-

nuity is of great importance for us. We have a great responsibility towards a great

number of children, their parents and relatives and we want to substantiate this. I

therefore would like to ask you to support us by a monthly dona- tion to the

Foundation. And as you know, on Bali one single Euro is al-

ready valuable! On behalf of the Board I would like to wish you

a great summer!

FINALLY

ING 9681407

!

All facts of life seem to be close on

Bali. I cannot seem to forget this. There are so many

births, so many deaths. So many natural phenomena to be experi-

enced and so many of those that are seemingly inexplicable. It is

all experienced from up close. For the Balinese this is called Tak-

dir.

The father of a close friend of mine died last week. Nobody under-

stands why. They found him in the toilets. It reminded me of when

my father in law died last February. So unexpected and unclarified.

If they had been able to visit a 'normal' physician and had taken

their medication regularly, everything might have been fine. But

often they don't have the money or they still believe in traditional

care and spiritual offerings.

Every person seems the same. Our blood is red, our heart beats in

the same way. Brains are made of the same material. So why are people so different? Why is it so hard to adapt? Takdir: it is

already destined when one is born and when one dies. Nothing can be changed here, so there is no reason to be sad... I prefer not

to get too carried away by these events and see what happens...

But then, when I see the big smiles on the faces of the High 5 kids, and when I see my own children, everything feels right. To-

gether sailing on the ocean we enjoy the peace and the dolphins who keep us company. It is like paradise!
