Dear Parents

Welcome to Term 3! It is great to have your lovely children back at Ilam; I have really enjoyed

listening to their holiday adventures as I have wandered around the school this week. A special

welcome to new families, whose children have started at Ilam this term.

More great learning will be occurring in classrooms this term, which I’m sure your children will be

captivated by. As well as focussing on the core areas of Literacy (Reading, Writing, Spelling) and

Maths each syndicate has a different inquiry focus. The junior (Year 1 & 2) classrooms are teaching

technology based topics around a broad theme of ‘What do we need to make?’ The middle

syndicate (Year 3 & 4) are also teaching a technology based topic with the theme of ‘How do things

work?’ I’m sure there will be lots of hands-on activities occurring in these rooms. The senior

syndicate (Year 5 & 6) have a Social Studies focus with the theme ‘The Measly Middle Ages’ – lots of

great learning about historical events.

We welcome Mrs Ruth Davis to the teaching staff this term. Ruth is teaching our new New Entrant

class, which started with 8 children on Monday in Room 21, next to the library. We officially

welcomed all of our new children, both from Room 21 and from other classrooms, at our Mihi

Whakatau on Tuesday. This included children who had started during Terms 1 and 2. A Mihi

Whakatau is a formal way of welcoming new people to our school. It acknowledges our new

children and staff and welcomes them to the Ilam family. We hold a Mihi Whakatau at the start of

the school year as well as at the start of Term 3.

A reminder to parents of children in Year 4-6 that Parent Teacher interviews are scheduled for next

Wednesday, 7 August (3:15pm-5:30pm) and Thursday, 8 August (3:15-8:30). I have written on

several occasions that it is my firm belief that positive, open relationships between parents and

teachers is paramount in achieving success for children. If you have not booked a time for these,

please go to the ‘school interviews’ website (www.schoolinterviews.co.nz) and use the code VYY8F

to book a time. Reports will be given to parents at the interviews and discussed as to their meaning.

I believe it is easier to talk through where your children are expected to be achieving at, how this

compares to their current achievement and where their next learning steps are, than having this

sent home for you to interpret. The report you receive at these interviews will be an overview of this

conversation.

During the holidays we had work done on our drains and boiler. Hopefully (fingers crossed!) this will

alleviate the flooding that has been occurring in the school after heavy rain and allow our boiler to

operate more efficiently.

Congratulations to the following ex-pupils who were awarded scholarships to Christs College for

2014. Alex Zhou, Samuel Li who are both at Cobham Intermediate, Seung Min Seok, who attends

Kirkwood Intermediate and Dylan Heap who attends Medbury School.

Congratulations to current pupils; Ashwini Raazesh, Kane Xie and Isaac Heap who gained

Commended Awards for their haikus in the junior section of the New Zealand Poetry Society

National and International Poetry Competition.

Kind regards

Ilam School Enviro’ Team and Enviro’ Activities The Enviro’ team would like to update you on our busy activities over the winter months.

We helped prepare our pool shade area in May. We updated our blog with some autumn photos and a video taken over at the

Ilam Homestead gardens. We helped install the pool sail shade in July so that it will be all ready for use

in the summer. Our drains have been getting fixed so that we don’t have so much flooding. We cleared and prepared a large new vegetable garden area by putting sheep

manure, newspaper and pea straw on it to help make it fertile for our spring planting.

We harvested and sold broccoli, cauliflower, silver beet, lettuces and rhubarb and made $25!

We started weeding the azalea garden ready to plant some more azaleas. We are very proud of our efforts and hope you are too!

COMMUNITY NOTICES

Ilam School does not necessarily endorse or support any of the services advertised.

The Christchurch Youth Council are running a youth market on the 31st of August from 2pm until 8pm, at the Pallet Pavilion, and they need many more stalls to be held. Every stall will be run by young people, and any profits made can be kept by the seller. The stalls can sell anything - crafts, food, clothes, or anything they we can accommodate it, as well as create a they we recommend people get in quickly, before it's too late. There is for the moment a $25 fee for hot food vendors, as they have to pay for all the power they use throughout the market. However, they are in the process of finding a way to avoid this cost.

The other invitation for the market is for any talented musicians. As the market runs, they will have young musicians perform, which is a great way for people to promote themselves. There will also be a concert in the Pavilion after the market, and they extend the invitation for this too. They haven't sorted yet how long each musician will play for - that will depend on how many people wish to perform. They ask that each musician sends a MP3 file of their work so that they can put together a performance order and establish whether it is appropriate music.
