ASPAAN NEWSLETTER VOLUME 19 ISSUE 4 3

Presidents Report

It is with a great sense of amazement and pride that I report for the final edition of our newsletter for 2015.

It has been a remarkable year, a year that I am sure we will look back on as the turning point for our organisation and our profession as a whole. We have so many achievements to report on.

By year’s end we will have:

• delivered 22 seminars and our National conference;

• grown by 200+ members;

• re-launched in QLD;

• established in SA;

• developed Australia’s first clinical fellowship program for nurses;

• sent a delegation to ICPAN in Copenhagen; and

• as announced last week, a formalised relationship of collaboration and cooperation between ASPAAN and ACORN.

Never before have we seen such significant contribution to the consolidation of our profession as this past 12 months. This has been the year of our awakening, and we will not dwell too long in taking stock as we are about to re-load for 2016 to see our transformation into the Australian College of Perianaesthesia Nurses (ACPAN).

So that, from the outset, our members are clear about the governance and structure of our new college, I would like to take this opportunity to communicate what was delivered at the ASPAAN AGM held during the recent National Conference in Melbourne.

The College will consist of three College Councils, The State Committees and the College Board and I will briefly outline the function of each.

The Curriculum and Credentialing Council (CCC) will oversee the development of:

• The ACPAN Foundations of Perianaesthetic Nursing Program

• The Clinical Fellowship Program

• Our College examinations

• The development of ACPAN ALS, PALS & Management of Peri-Anaesthesia Crises courses

The Professional Standards Council (PSC) will preside over the development of the ACPAN National Standards for Perianaesthesia Nursing; will produce pertinent position statements of our College; and will provide a mechanism for professional conduct review.

The Membership Services Council (MSC) will deliver the CPD events including the National Conference and State seminars conjointly with the State committees. The MSC will also have governance over member relations, our web content & support and the other internal services that provide value to your membership.

Presidents Report Cont.

These Councils and the State Committees are the operational backbone of our new college. Next week, Expressions of Interest will be circulated for the Chairperson for each Council, so look out for that in the coming weeks. Following the appointment and induction of the Council Chairs, we will then advertise for the positions available on each Council.

The College Board will assume the highest level of governance for the College and are accountable for:

• Strategic and financial management

• Political, administrative and industrial lobbying

• External Stakeholder relationship management

• Media relations

Membership of the College Board consists of:

• The College President, Secretary & Treasurer

• The State Presidents

• The Council Chairs

This new governance structure represents the evolution of our activity from the days of focusing solely on low cost CPD, to today where we find ourselves shaping peri-anaesthesia policy at a national and jurisdictional level. We have taken a lead in the credentialing dialogue and we are referred to as a peak representative body for peri-anaesthesia nursing professionals. We have opened the discussion around advanced practice nursing roles in peri-anaesthesia and our transformed structure will enable us to progress this with vigor.

I would hope that you will join me in promoting our organisation as we are poised to change our professional standing in Australia, through the commendable effort of your ASPAAN Committee members that have taken us to this point of making history!

Finally, I would like to thank you for your membership in 2015 and I wish you all an enjoyable, relaxing and safe holiday season.

Sincerely,

Jamie Mann-Farrar, RN, BN (UTS), MHSM (CSU) National President

MiiyTix and ASPAAN - “A guide to purchasing tickets”

A number of our members are still having difficulty purchasing tickets to conferences and seminars. A set of step-by-step instructions was written and made available from the ASPAAN website, but the general membership may not be aware of its existence.

At the top of the ASPAAN Events page https://aspaan.org.au/events, underneath the main banner, there is a “Click-Here” link. By clicking the link, members (and non-members) will be presented with a document which guides them through purchasing ASPAAN tickets via MiiyTix.

At the bottom of the document, there are also a couple of handy hints on how to:

• Print MiiyTix Invoices,

• Re-print Tickets, and

• Confirm you’ve been registered to an Event

We hope this makes your future ticketing purchases easier and more understandable.

Regards,

David Cutrupi (ASPAAN Membership Officer)

WA

The WA committee is holding its 4th and final twilight seminar for 2015 on Thursday 17th December featuring AAPAAN National President Jamie Mann-Farrar and WA state committee member Anji Hall. The theme for the evening is “nightmare before christmas”. The committee is pleased with the numbers attending this new seminar format with positive feedback from members.

2016 plan - the committee is aiming to hold a half day seminar in the first half of 2016 followed by 3 twilight seminars.

We have had a small increase in membership in 2015 and hope to improve these numbers is 2016 with more seminar opportunities for members.

NSW/ACT

We have had a busy 2015 and are rip roaring and ready to go for 2016!

The NSW/ACT committee has provided 7 seminars with over 40 hours of CPD to members in 2015 - a feat we are extremely proud of after a relatively small year in 2014 (Sydney held it’s first National Conference in 2014).

Since our last newsletter, we have had our seminars in Canberra, Port Macquarie, Ryde & Auburn with our Wollongong seminar set for 5th December. Don’t forget to get your registrations in!

We also ran a membership competition over the past couple of months with our winners revealed at the National Conference in Melbourne. Congratulations to Auburn Hospital & Port Macquairie Base Hospital, who have won themselves breakfast at their place & we will be in touch shortly to organise your prize.

Canberra’s seminar is always a great day with presentations from Dr Ross Peake on Ultrasound Guided Regional Anaesthesia, Kevin Naughton gave us insight on retrieval anaesthesia and Jane Nichols, one of our amazing committee members, provided awareness on dealing with grief in the perioperative environment. Thank you to all of our presenters & look forward to seeing you next year in our Nation’s capital.

Port Macquarie Private Hospital hosted our first ever Northern NSW seminar which was an amazing day filled with pain management updates from Vicki Newton, pain management CNC at Port Macquarie Base Hospital. The day was treated to an entertaining presentation from Dr Luke Bannon on fluid management in the Perioperative suite & followed up with an overview of stress management for periop nurses and a refresher on critical thinking in crisis situations. We had a great response to the day & have been overwhelmed with ideas & locations for seminars in the future.

Ryde Hospital saw our most successful seminar of the year with amazing support and feedback from our trade sponsors. Well done to Bernadette Huang, committee member for the organisation of this day. We had 28 attendees, 6 presenters & 8 trade partners attend on the day.

Our first Twilight seminar was held on 27th October at the University of Notre Dame Simulation Centre, Auburn. We had a great response to this day as well and thank Fresenius Kabi for their sponsorship for the day and to our presenters for giving up their time to assist on the night.

We will provide you with the wrap up for the Wollongong seminar in our next edition.

We are currently booking in dates for 2016 with some new, exciting locations so be on the look out in your email boxes for your 2016 ASPAAN Education Calendar. In the meantime, have a wonderful Christmas and start to the New Year. A big thank you to all of our presenters at our seminars, trade partners and to you the members.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the members on the NSW/ ACT committee - you have done amazing work this year & should be so proud of all the work that you do for ASPAAN.

QLD

Since the last newsletter, Queensland has seen two seminars. The September seminar was held at Redcliffe Hospital. It was well attended and feedback from the participants was extremely positive. The second seminar, held in October, on Blood Management provided participants with a good overview of several different aspects of blood management including Auto-transfusion and TEG. The Queensland committee is currently finalising the seminar program for the first half of 2016. The first seminar will be held in February at Redcliffe hospital, topic and date to be announced when finalised. The second seminar, held later in the first half of the year will focus on Paediatrics.

There has been interest from two hospitals in hosting a seminar and the committee is working with those hospitals to provide relevant education opportunities.

The committee wishes all members a happy and healthy festive season and we look forward to seeing you at a seminar in 2016.

Janeen, Karen, Jodie and Kellie.

TAS

ASPAAN Tasmania presented a seminar at the Southern Simulation Centre in Hobart on the 7th of November, which attracted 20 ASPAAN members from across the state. The seminar included a difficult airway presentation and difficult intubation scenario with Dr M. Anderson, a malignant hyperthermia workshop with Dr D. Brown, and a scenario of a bleeding patient in PACU with our Tasmanian ASPAAN president, Ken Hancock RN. We would like to acknowledge Covidien for sponsoring this event.

ASPAAN Tasmania are hosting a breakfast on the 6th of December to welcome new committee members and to discuss plans for 2016, including a workshop focusing on ultrasound and ventilation (Hopefully held at Cradle Mountain), which we aim to coincide with ACORN’s 17th National Conference, which will be held in Hobart from the 25th to the 28th of May 2016.

ASPAAN Tasmania would like to encourage new members to join the society and the Tasmania State Committee. Please contact Ken Hancock at [email protected] if you would like to become a Tasmanian States committee member.

The inaugural 1/2 day Seminar - Issues in Anaesthetic and Post Anaesthetic Nursing was well attended with 17 attendees despite the late notification of the event. The speakers were interesting, informative and presentations well received by the attendees. Topics included: “An Overview of ASPAAN in SA and discussion”, “ASPAAN and New Changes to Take Place”, “Perioperative Anaphylaxis”, “Investigations and Testing”, “Bariatric Patients and Difficult Airways”, “Hot Topics in Pain”, and “Pain Management in Patients with Substance Abuse”. Jamie Mann-Farrar kindly stepped in with a presentation on Malignant Hyperthermia when a speaker had to decline suddenly. There were a few attendees who also recently joined up. The day was a success and we look forward to a promising future.

National Conference

Melbourne 2015 – From Induction to Emergence and Beyond

Another successful conference was held this year with 197 attendees. There were top class speakers with a variety of topics including: reportable deaths and the coroner; phaeochromocytoma; can’t intubate: what next?; Adapting to change in the perioperative environment; The pointy end of practice – catastrophic results of re-spiking IV bags; and ECG use in recovery.

The panel discussion was back with a number of interesting discussions taking place regarding different practices around the country.

The pre-conference drinks evening was an opportunity for our members to display their research by way of a poster. The posters submitted were very professional and shows an example of the great resources we have among our members.

The winner of the poster display was Kathryn Mak whose poster on Ultrasound guided Neuraxial blockade inspired the judges. Kathryn wins free registration to the 2016 National conference.

Sandi Kingisepp was awarded 2nd prize for her poster - Obstructive Sleep Apnoea - “Reducing Possible Risk of Adverse Outcomes in Surgical Patients with OSA, Providing safe care Pathways”

The lucky door prize of 12 months’ free membership was won by Karin Bate.

The conference committee thanks all those who attended for their feedback. It has been taken on board and a new venue will be sourced for the 2016 conference.

The national committee extends its thanks to the conference committee and the Victorian committee for their efforts in organizing such a successful National Conference and we look forward to the 2016 installment.

ANAESTHETIC NURSE SPECIALIST ROLE: LEADING AND FACILITATION IN CLINICAL PRACTICE

by E Fynes, DSE Martin, L Hoy and A Cousley

Correspondence address; Daphne SE Martin, Lecturer (Eclucatlon)/Pathway Leader Specialist Practice in Anaesthetic Nursing, Schooi of Nursing and Midwifery, Queen’s University Belfast, Medical Biology Centre, 97 Lisburn Road, Be/fast, BT9 7BL.

Email: [email protected]

ABSTRACTLeadership and its effectiveness is becoming more prevalent within the nursing profession with anaesthetic nurse specialists showing their ability to lead, inspire and motivate others to work towards a shared vision in the rapidly changing peri-anaesthesia environment. Anaesthetic nurse specialists must therefore be aware of their personal leadership skills and continually develop these within clinical practice. They are also well placed regarding the facilitation of learning.

ADVOCACY IN PAIN MANAGEMENT: THE ROLE OF THE ANAESTHETIC NURSE SPECIALIST

McLean, G; Martin, D ; Cousley, A; Hoy, L. The British Journal of Anaesthetic and Recovery Nursing 14.3-4 (Aug 2013): 43-48.

ABSTRACTPeri-operative nursing practice is constantly changing and demanding specialist knowledge, skills and expertise to embrace these changes. All patients in need of anaesthesia are entitled to the same high quality peri-operative care and therefore those assisting the anaesthetist must be competent and effective practitioners. With this in mind the authors shall give a reflective account highlighting the role of Anaesthetic Nurse Specialist (ANS) in promoting leadership within the peri-operative environment and how it can be nurtured and facilitated to achieve professional autonomy and promote patient advocacy.

MAGNET JOURNEY: A QUALITY IMPROVEMENT PROJECT—IMPLEMENTATION OF FAMILY VISITATION IN THE PACU

• Esther Lee, MBA, RN, • Nancy Li, BSN, RN, • Amy Yates, MSN, RN

PURPOSE:Over the years, patient- and family-centered care has been a focus of many researchers in the postanesthesia care unit (PACU) setting. Despite evidence pointing to the benefits and positive outcomes of partnering with family in patient care in pediatric and adult PACUs, this practice has not gained popularity in the adult PACUs of many hospitals. The purpose of this project was to test and validate the benefits of including families as partners in care in the PACU.

DESIGN: A pre/post exploratory design using survey methodology was used.

METHODS:Survey questionnaires were administered to patients, family, and nursing staff before and after the implementation of a patient visitation program.

FINDINGS: Patient and family satisfaction increased after implementation of the family visitation program. Nursing satisfaction with and openness to family visitation also increased.

CONCLUSIONS:Results provide the evidence base to implement an open visitation policy that has been made permanent as a standard of care practiced in all the PACU sites throughout the health system.

FINDINGS: • quality improvement; • perianesthesia nursing; • evidence-based practice (EBP); • patient- and family-centered care; • family visitation; • research
