PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGEAssalamu Alaikum

Dear students, parents and staff,

Welcome to Term 2. As usual it will be a very full term. Term two seems to have begun smoothly and everyone has got down to work very quickly. We have had some staffing changes this term. Ms Nazanin Kazeme has replaced Mrs Seyma Yagci who is on maternity leave and Mr Karan Kanwal has replaced Mrs Ebru Karahan who is on maternity leave too.

I would like to inform you that students in Year 3,5, 7 and 9 will be tested in English and Maths on the 12, 13th and 14th of May 2009 at the College. The results of the NAPLAN Test will be informed to parents in Term 3. It is important that good study and organizational practices are first in placed at the very beginning so that all study works are completed to the best possible standard and that deadlines are met. Parents can assist students by providing support and encouragement by adopting a firm approach to all study routines.

I am happy to meet our students that they have to come to school in full winter school uniform in Term 2 and 3. Guidelines on all uniform policy and behaviour are clearly outlined by Vice Principals and Coordinators. As principal of the College, I appreciate your high standard of behaviour at the College.

I would like to inform you that parents’ car park has been completed at the back of the library. You have to enter the car park form Corinella Crescent and exit from Inverloch Crescent from Monday, 27 of April 2009. Parents will not use the staff car park. Please drop off and pick up your children in a safe way and adhere to the safety rules to make our college a safe and secure place for our children. We thank you for your understanding and cooperation in this matter.

I wish you have a happy and productive term at the College.

May the peace and blessing of Allah be upon you all.

Work Experience 15 June – 19 June, 2009

Work Experience is a great opportunity for students as it provides an opportunity for students to explore possible career options. It can increase their self understanding, independence and self-confidence and motivation them to continue studying and go on to tertiary or further education and training. For these reasons, it is essential that all year 10 students find suitable work placements. Many of our Year 10 students have been busy trying to organise a work placement, yet many students are finding it difficult. If any parents or friends could assist the college in offering placements it would be greatly appreciated.

Developmental PlayP-2 grade levels are able to spend 1 period a week in the multipurpose room involved in developmental play. Thanks to all our parents and our successful chocolate fundraising effort last year, we were able to pur-chase many play resources for our junior grade levels at Ilim College. While playing, children are involved in an enjoyable experience in which they develop many foundational skills and concepts such as physical, emotional, cognitive and social skills. Because children enjoy playing so much, it is important for us to include play as a tool to help them learn. Literacy development is dependent on extensive exposure to oral lan-guage. Play is a perfect opportunity to help children develop their oral language. At this stage teachers are taking observations of their students playing and discovering their student’s interests. As the primary department are beginning to implement inquiry based learning, it is anticipated that each class’ play session will involve integrating their science/humanities topic into their play session. Therefore our aim is to enable students to practise using oral language related to their topic within an enjoyable and meaningful setting.

Ilim College Donation to The Royal Children’s Hospital - Good Friday Appeal

On Friday, 10th April, The Primary School SRC members Ruqaiyah Fatimah Muhammed, Suedanur Kayikci, Baturhan Kaynak, Akif Aykan, Alisha Rawal, Meryem Altun and Reem Latife visited Etihad Stadium during the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal and presented a $2,000 cheque on behalf of Ilim College. All seven students appeared live on television. Alisha Rawal in Grade 6 spoke confidently on television about how the school managed to raise the money. She said that the money was raised by selling fairy floss at lunchtime and students donating a gold coin for being out of uniform and wearing orange to promote Har-mony Day. The Royal Children’s Hospital – Good Friday Appeal representatives congratulated our school for our support and generosity and praised our students for their fantastic behaviour. A special thank you to the SRC Coordinator, Ms. Murvet Altikulac for organising the fundraising activities, SRC members and to all Ilim College staff, parents and students for their generosity and support for this special and worthy cause.

Yusuf KircaPrincipal
