t seems a lot went on during my month away from the Club!

Firstly, congratulations to our 2016 Men's Triples Champions; Peter Smith, Jeff Hole and Brian Spear who won a close fought Final 25/21 over Andrew Woodmansey, Peter McAdam and Bruce Atkins.

And it was wonderful to hear that our relatively new member Mark Lange won his first- ever title, winning the Consistency Singles Championship 175/160 over Harry Evans. Congratulations Mark - a great effort, my friend!

It's been a pretty good performance by all 4 Mosman teams in the Mid-week Challenge. The C Grade side were very unlucky, winning their last game 5/1 and finishing in second place by just 0.5 points to Lane Cove. So close......

The B (1) and D grade teams both

played Pittwater at Harbord in the

semi finals. Mosman had a great

result winning both matches. B

grade played out a tie and won the

match by 2 rinks to 1 whilst D grade

won by 3 shots. Very close results -

Well done Mosman!!!!!!!

Overall it has been an excellent competition and Mosman has performed very well throughout!

The Jack Harkness 6's & 7's Tournament was won by Killlara

I over North Sydney in a gripping final. Killara have now won 3 of the past 4 Harkness Tournaments, a great performance. All competing teams commented most favourably about the Tournament and Mosman's administration - thanks again to our organiser, Peter McAdam.

The Annual General Meeting was well-attended, and confirmed the appointment of two new Board Directors. Barbara Anderson and Jenny Hole and I am sure both will be outstanding contributors. The Board also farewelled retiring Director Peter McAdam who has stepped down after 6 years - thankfully Peter has agreed to continue organising both the Alex MacPherson Carnival and the Jack Harkness Tournament.

As we move into daylight savings we intend to invigorate Friday mufti twilight bowls. From October 7th, games will start at 4pm and last for about 2 hours. The green fee remains at just $7, and the bar will be open for hydration and socialising.

The season gets under way with the mufti singles competition on the 7th October, and mufti pairs from October 14th. Both are always a lot of fun, so I urge you to get your names on the list as soon as possible.

website for those interested. The NSW Mens new board has highlighted integration between men and women as a top priority. Let’s hope we see a more enlightened future at the State level!

We are currently in Carnival mode. Many of our members have been out and about at other clubs and have been quite successful. We’d love to hear how your team went so please advise our Publicity Officer, Trish Tamaoki, and also put the carnival results in the book in the locker room

A team of Glenda Weerdon, Ann Barron, De Brown and I won the morning session at Harbord on 19th September. Denise Owen, Ann Barron, Judy Mitchell and I were runners up at the recent Neutral Bay Invitational.

There was an unfortunate accident at Neutral Bay where a club member had a very heavy fall in the clubhouse and caused herself significant injury. We often take our safety for granted but this was an awful reminder that these things can so easily happen and we all made a mental note to be more aware of this issue in future, so please keep your eyes open not just for yourself but for others too.

he AGM was held on 18th September and Barbara Anderson and I were elected to the Board. That brings the number of women on the Board to three which is a satisfying result. However, in line with this, we must head towards a totally integrated club. To this end, we really need more of the women members to put their hands up to work in the Bowls Office and as Duty Officers. Neither of these duties are restricted to men nor are they particularly onerous and we should be pulling our weight in this area. You will only have to work once every five weeks at most. You will learn more about the way the club works so please consider putting your hand up. Speak to Ann, Barbara or myself to volunteer.

Congratulations to all elected Board members. Thank you to Peter McAdam who has done a wonderful job as Director of Social Events and Sponsorship. I have taken over this role and Peter will be a very hard act to follow.

Thanks to De Brown who attended the NSW Women's AGM on my behalf. There has been quite a change in the composition of the NSW Board and a full report is on the Bowls NSW

THE FINAL OF THE MEN'S CONSISTENCY SINGLES

I had the pleasure of marking this match between Harry Evans and Mark Lange. It was a tight game throughout with Mark prevailing 175/160.

Men’s consistency singles is a first to 175 points event with 4 points awarded for the closest bowl to the jack, 3 for the second closest, 2 for the third and 1 for the fourth. So there is a need to concentrate on every bowl played. If you can’t get the shot then you can still be ahead on an end by having the second, third and fourth bowl.

Harry had a 10 shot handicap advantage and Mark did not close the gap until the 17th end when the score was 110 each. From here Mark steadily increased his lead and at the 21st end was out to a 141/119 advantage. Harry began to close the gap gradually and at the 27th end was behind by only 7 points (161/154). The match was very much in the balance. However two consecutive 7/3 ends gave the win to Mark.

The match was of high quality throughout and tactics played a part. Harry tried a couple of very short ends with the mat right up. This led to penalty points to both players with short jacks causing a 10 point loss to Harry and a bowl in the ditch losing Mark 5 points. It was interesting to see each player looking for the tactical advantage throughout the contest.

Congratulations to Mark for his win and to Harry for putting up a great fight.

Congratulations go to Julie Hayden, who represented the club at the Anita Linden Trophy played between regions 15 and 16. Region 15 (us) won 119 to 110, a great result.

Well done to De Brown, Betty-Anne Cleveland, Loyce Davis and Barbara Anderson, and all those who have acted as subs for the State Pairs Challenge. They played some very tough games and represented our club well. We are waiting for the final of our Championship Triples which will be played on 1st October and our Consistency is now underway. board, good luck to all.

The Mayoral Trophy will be held on 29th October at Mosman. Please put your name on the list if you are available to play.

Our next big social event is Melbourne Cup with full details in this newsletter.

Come along and support Mosman and good luck to our team in the Top 5 on 6th October and also in the Lindfield Shield on 14th October, bring it home!

The second Centenary Gala Day, established by your club last year, was held at Killara Bowling Club on 25th September.

The 16 clubs in attendance are all 100 years or older and it was particularly fitting that Killara hosted this year’s tournament as they celebrated their centenary this year. The Killara members looked resplendent in their gold sashes, and the Manly teams also added a touch of class with their sparkly gold hats!

It was a terrific day. Killara organized the event which involved morning tea on arrival, a lot of camaraderie, the first of

three sets of 7 ends, a delicious lunch followed by the next 2 sets of 7 ends (except that the last set was cut short by rain). Then we came into the clubhouse for Devonshire tea and the presentations of prizes to the winners! Neutral Bay was declared the winner of the day.

Mosman was represented by Stephen Lewis, Jill Kehoe and Peter McAdam, while the second team was comprised of Peter Smith, Trish Tamaoki and Denise Owen.

The continuation of this annual event now looks assured.

The competition was fierce throughout the tournament. Sadly, the Mosman team was eliminated in the first round.

It's been a good year for Killara, who proudly fly the 2016 Zone 9 Grade 6 Pennant flag and now have the Jack Harkness Shield in their trophy cabinet after an extremely exciting final.

At the 20th end, Killara and Manly were tied on 20 shots each, after a match where the lead changed many times. And the 21st end proved to be even more exciting, particularly as it attracted scores of Mosman bowlers who were present and witnessed the drama.

Manly held shot, leaving Killara's skip, Rod Henriks with what proved to be the last bowl of the day. And what a bowl . . . there it came through the traffic and ended up 3 inches from the jack to take the match.

Congratulations to Killara, particularly as it's their third Jack Harkness win in the past four years.

ANOTHER year of fabulous competition for Grade 6 and 7 players has just been completed at the Mosman Bowling Club's "Jack Harkness Memorial ‘6s and 7s Invitational Tournament”, which was played over four weeks in August/September.

Proudly sponsored by Bendigo Bank M o s m a n , t h e t o u r n a m e n t commenced with 16 invited teams from Zone 9 and the balance of rinks filled with Mosman members.

It is the biggest day of the year with 112 bowlers on the green.

As tradition has it, the visiting bowlers were able to mix with each other before the game with a sausage sizzle, and enjoy scones, jam and cream at half time!

An extract from the Women's Bowls NSW Website.

Essential guide to the etiquette of bowls.

(To be continued in next month's newsletter).

1 Timeliness

Always be on time e.g. at least 15

minutes before the calling of the

cards. If a game has been

arranged whether formal (club or

tournament) or informal (roll up)

if you are running late or you

need to reschedule, call your skip

or the club and advise them of

your situation. (most people have

mobile phones and are easily

contactable).

2 Mobile Phones

Before commencing a game all

mobile phones, pagers and other

electronic devices should be

switched off for the duration of a

game. Music listening devices

such as IPods should not be used

during a game.

3 Greeting your opponents

Always greet your opponents with

a handshake before the game.

4 In any game

Whether it be Singles, Pairs,

Triples or Fours, after the mat is

placed, it is a nice gesture to hand

your opponent the jack and bowl

(be aware that not all players like

you touching their bowls). This

gesture usually applies to the first

bowl on the first end, and by

handing the jack and/or mat can

help get the next end under way

promptly.

5 During the course of the game

Acknowledge good bowls and

good luck bowls (such as fluky

bowls), and do not show excessive

emotion when bad or fluky bowls

are delivered and you get the

result. Remember, fluky bowls

even out over time and everyone

will have their share of them.

6 Show respect

Show respect for every opponent

you play by not moving about

while they are on the mat, or

talking to the team while they are

about to deliver a bowl. There are

specific rules regarding standing

behind the mat or behind the

head. (See Laws of the Sport)

When asking a player(s) to move,

be sure to be polite, courteous

and show good sportsmanship at

all times.

At a recent Zone 9 meeting the chairman of Zone 9 umpires made the point that many players do not know how to mark a singles game. A number of examples of incidents that have happened in Zone Singles Championship matches were tabled. Two of these were as follows:

∞ In a singles match the marker had retreated to the other end prior to the players agreeing the score for the end just finished. During measuring, one of the players accidentally moved the jack. While the Law states that the opposition player must replace the jack into its original position the marker should have remained at the head with the players to assist, if asked, in deciding where the jack should be correctly repositioned.

∞ In another important match the marker was sitting down chatting to a colleague when the player on the mat required information about the position in the head. This resulted in the player becoming frustrated at being unable to attract the attention of t h e m a r k e r , l o s i n g h i s concentration and with it his temper. Markers should be s t a n d i n g a t t h e h e a d concentrating on the game in hand.

In most competitions it is obligatory that a player losing a singles match is available to mark the second game of the day. The Zone 9 umpires committee conducts a markers course under the auspices of Bowls Australia. Attendance is not compulsory or even necessary providing players understand their marker obligations. However the Zone has requested that clubs make sure all players entering a Zone singles competition know how to mark. No doubt this also applies to Women’s District competitions.

The duties of the marker are spelt out in Rule 42 of the Laws of the Sport of Bowls. A summary is as follows:

In the absence of an umpire the marker must ensure that all aspects of play are carried out according to the laws of the game. So an understanding of the laws is important. The marker must: ∞ centre the jack. ∞ make sure the jack is at least

21 metres from the front of the mat. Measure or call an umpire to do so if unsure.

∞ STAND to one side of the rink, behind the jack and away from the head. (In other words don’t sit down).

The Marker in a Singles Game

Page 11: NEWSLETTER...Twilight Bowls will resume with the commencement of Daylight Saving, starting at 4pm. The format of this always popular programme is under review and will be announced

∞ W H E N A S K E D a n s w e r SPECIFIC questions from the player on the mat. This may include jack position, which bowl the marker considers to be shot, how many shots are held, the position of a bowl relative to the jack etc. (The word “specific” is important. It means not giving unsolicited advice or opinion about any circumstances in a game including who has shot at any time. If asked for information answer the SPECIFIC question without embellishment).

∞ mark all touchers and remove chalk from non-touchers.

∞ s t o p a b o w l f r o m a neighbouring rink that may interfere with the head.

∞ if players agree, remove dead bowls.

∞ mark the position of a jack or bowl in the ditch. If the jack or a live bowl in the ditch is moved by a later bowl ensure it is repositioned

∞ not move any bowl or jack from the head until players agree the number of shots scored.

∞ measure any disputed shot if asked. If the player is not satisfied with the decision call an umpire or if no umpire is present, ask a competent neutral person to adjudicate.

∞ record the score at each end on the scorecard and advise the players of the running score. Change the scoreboard if used every second end.

∞ at the conclusion of the game ensure that players sign the card and record the time the game is completed.

In summary, before you enter a singles competition make sure you know the duties of the marker. This is especially important when representing the club in any outside singles event.
